[00:00:00] Here is the latest higher summits forecast brought to you by our friends at the Mount

[00:00:13] Washington Observatory.

[00:00:19] Weather above treeline in the white mountains is often wildly different than at our trail

[00:00:25] heads.

[00:00:26] Before you hike, check the higher summits forecast at MountWashington.org.

[00:00:32] Weather observers working at the nonprofit Mount Washington Observatory write this elevation-based

[00:00:38] forecast every morning and afternoon.

[00:00:42] Search and rescue teams, have a lunch experts and backcountry guides all rely on the higher

[00:00:47] summits forecast to anticipate weather conditions above treeline.

[00:00:52] You should too.

[00:00:54] Go to MountWashington.org or text forecast to 603-356-2137.

[00:01:12] And here is your forecast for Friday, February 23 and Saturday, February 24.

[00:01:19] We have an active alert here.

[00:01:22] They are calling for a windshield advisory in effect from 8am Eastern Standard Time Saturday

[00:01:27] through 9am Eastern Standard Time Sunday.

[00:01:31] So it's going to be dangerously cold this weekend and here we go.

[00:01:36] So Friday, in the clouds with snow showers, additional snow accumulations of a trace to two

[00:01:41] inches with a high and the upper 20s.

[00:01:44] The winds will be shifting to the northwest at 20-35 mph, increasing to 25-40 mph with

[00:01:51] a wind chill, 5-15 above.

[00:01:55] Friday night mostly in the clouds under mostly cloudy skies with a chance of snow showers,

[00:02:00] possible additional snow accumulations of a trace to one inch.

[00:02:03] The low is going to be around 5 degrees with northwest winds at 25-40 mph, increasing

[00:02:09] to 45-60 mph with gusts up to 70 and the wind chill is going to be falling to 20-30

[00:02:16] below.

[00:02:17] Saturday, in and out of the clouds, trending towards clearing under partly cloudy skies,

[00:02:23] starting with a high and the lower single digits decreasing through the day to around 5

[00:02:29] below.

[00:02:30] That's cold.

[00:02:32] Let's say the least.

[00:02:34] Northwest winds at 45-60 mph, increasing to 55-70 mph with gusts up to 80 mph with

[00:02:43] the wind chill falling to 40 below to 50 below.

[00:03:04] Broadcasting from the Woodpecker Studio in the great state of New Hampshire, welcome

[00:03:28] to the sounds like a search and rescue podcast.

[00:03:31] So we discuss all things related to hiking and search and rescue in the white mountains

[00:06:31] and I'm stopped.

[00:06:33] Let's get started.

[00:07:00] This is Ben Pies from Hiking Buddies.

[00:07:02] We are a 501-C3 non-profit committed to reducing avoidable tragedies through education, impactful

[00:07:08] projects and fostering a community of support.

[00:07:10] You can find out more at hikingbuddies.org.

[00:07:13] We wanted to say thank you to those who have supported our mission and most importantly,

[00:07:17] say thanks to those who speak up, who ask questions and who are willing to provide guidance

[00:07:22] and assistance on the trails when needed.

[00:07:24] You embody what it means to be a hiking buddy.

[00:07:26] And now for all my newer hikers out there, here's this episode's Hiking Buddies Quick Tip.

[00:07:40] Leave no trace, principal number two.

[00:07:43] Travel and camp on durable surfaces.

[00:07:46] Stay on trails, choose durable ground for tenting, large trees for hammocking, do not camp

[00:07:53] within 200 feet of a water source.

[00:08:00] Let's get started.

[00:08:08] So let's go.

[00:08:09] Let's start the episode off.

[00:08:11] Stop with a message from a listener named Jen, who is in the deepest, darkest parts

[00:08:18] of Antarctica.

[00:08:21] Can you believe this?

[00:08:22] We have listeners in Antarctica.

[00:08:24] So listener Jen says, hey, just letting you guys know I brought your podcast, parentheses

[00:08:30] and sticker, close parentheses to Antarctica, working as a sous chef for Mercurto Station

[00:08:36] until March 2024.

[00:08:39] Just tag the podcast in a notable hike and we'll post a pic of the sticker in front

[00:08:43] of the Mercurto sign soon.

[00:08:45] How cool is that?

[00:08:48] That's impressive.

[00:08:49] It's Mercurto Station.

[00:08:51] It's Mercurto.

[00:08:52] I have my week readers on.

[00:08:56] Yeah, no problem.

[00:08:57] But look at a picture of it on Wikipedia and it's a pretty decent sized facility.

[00:09:02] It reminds me of what you'll see in these villages in Alaska where they have to fly

[00:09:06] a plane.

[00:09:07] So it's pretty big.

[00:09:08] Containers and there's a number of different housing units and work buildings and

[00:09:14] stuff.

[00:09:15] She's not exactly like in the middle of Antarctica but I would imagine that they go out on

[00:09:19] excursions and do all kinds of cool stuff.

[00:09:22] Yeah, who knows?

[00:09:23] So the station is the largest community in Antarctica capable of supporting up to 1500

[00:09:28] residents.

[00:09:29] Unbelievable.

[00:09:30] So there's, I guess there's a few other facilities there but that's one of them.

[00:09:35] Yeah, that's impressive.

[00:09:37] So Jen thank you for all the thoughts about us and make sure that you're putting our

[00:09:42] sticker everywhere and I don't know.

[00:09:45] She probably must have gotten stickers from when she was in the US because there's no way

[00:09:49] you can mail things to eat.

[00:09:50] Oh, it would assume it takes a while to get there.

[00:09:52] Yeah, that's a good question.

[00:09:54] Maybe dolls and pop set her up with one and a pie before she'd split.

[00:09:58] It could be.

[00:09:59] It could be so.

[00:10:00] Anyway, but definitely let's stay in touch with her.

[00:10:03] I'd love to get her on to talk about what life is like down there.

[00:10:06] Yeah, that's a good call.

[00:10:07] You hear that Jen?

[00:10:08] Yes.

[00:10:09] All right.

[00:10:10] We got you.

[00:10:11] You're in.

[00:10:12] All right, stop.

[00:10:13] And then coming up I wanted to plug a little event that we have going on for next Wednesday.

[00:10:17] I'm going to be doing a presentation of search and rescue data with the hiking buddies.

[00:10:23] So I think you can sign up through the hiking buddies.

[00:10:25] We'll put a link in the show notes.

[00:10:27] So if you want to check that out, I'll be there.

[00:10:29] I'll be there.

[00:10:30] I'm going to slide podcast episode I think.

[00:10:32] Yeah, yeah, I'll be there, dude.

[00:10:33] I'll support you.

[00:10:34] All right.

[00:10:35] I'm a little nervous.

[00:10:36] I won't have my camera on but I'll be listening.

[00:10:39] Yeah, I don't know how it's going to work.

[00:10:41] I got to talk to Lynn to find out what the logistics are around it.

[00:10:46] If it's just me talking or if there's an opportunity for people to ask questions.

[00:10:49] Right.

[00:10:50] All right, cool.

[00:10:52] All right.

[00:10:53] So I get a little bit of homework today.

[00:10:55] I got to pull together 2023 SAR data media reports.

[00:10:59] Right, right.

[00:11:00] Yeah, your presentation is always really cool and your data.

[00:11:05] So you're looking forward to it.

[00:11:06] It'd be fun.

[00:11:07] All right, stop.

[00:11:08] So I wanted to just, you know, we usually do this stuff at the end but I figured we'd

[00:11:11] talk about this Mount Washington rescue.

[00:11:13] Yeah, this is a big, big ordeal.

[00:11:16] Man.

[00:11:17] Yeah.

[00:11:18] So a port Smith man rescued in 90 mile an hour wins with the help of the cog railway.

[00:11:26] Yeah.

[00:11:27] So a team of rescue was worked in minus 52 degree windchill using multiple resources

[00:11:33] to reach the hiker who offers us say made numerous poor decisions.

[00:11:38] So the hamster fishing game said Saturday, 22 year old from portsmith was hiking in the

[00:11:45] MNUC ravine on the western slope of Mount Washington when he fell and was injured.

[00:11:51] So after the fall, this hiker called 911 requested help due to poor reception.

[00:11:57] Very little information could be obtained except that he had an injury and needed help.

[00:12:02] The call was sent to a conservation officer along with the GPS coordinates of the hiker's

[00:12:07] location which showed him well off trail in a drainage ravine west of the west side trail

[00:12:14] and north of Crawford path at approximately 4,500 feet of elevation.

[00:12:18] So while just for the listeners nearby, yeah.

[00:12:23] Yeah.

[00:12:24] The, the lay the land over there so you come up in the MNUC ravine trail, you hit lakes

[00:12:31] of the cloud hut, you will then continue on towards the Mount Washington summit via

[00:12:37] the Crawford path.

[00:12:40] Before you make the final push to the summit there is a, you can call it a bailout or

[00:12:45] you can call it a diversion.

[00:12:46] So there's a trail called the west side trail which is probably about six tenths of a

[00:12:53] mile from the trail junction of Crawford over to connect to the cog railway.

[00:12:58] So I've used this trail as a bailout before.

[00:13:01] I think it's at about 5,200 feet of elevation, maybe, maybe 5,400 feet of elevation so I'm

[00:13:08] skeptical that he was down 4,500 feet, I'd be surprised but maybe he was, I don't know.

[00:13:14] Well, the read sort of funny like was he bushwhacking?

[00:13:18] No.

[00:13:19] Because it says he was in the ravine.

[00:13:21] Yeah, he fell.

[00:13:23] I mean, he certainly fell down.

[00:13:25] The problem with taking that west side trail is that in difficult conditions you're basically

[00:13:33] walking into the western face of the mountain where the wind is hitting directly.

[00:13:41] So until you get to the cog railroad tracks you're relying on cairns to find your way and

[00:13:49] that area doesn't get traveled a lot.

[00:13:51] There's not going to be a lot of footprints or even if there was people traveling there

[00:13:56] it's just hard packed ice and there's no trail to follow so you have to follow the cairns.

[00:14:04] So he was on trail and then went down this drainage?

[00:14:07] It sounds like he went down trail.

[00:14:10] Yeah, that's I'm trying to figure out.

[00:14:13] The west side trail I think is around 5,200, 5,400 feet.

[00:14:17] It just follows that contour line all the way over to the cog railroad.

[00:14:22] They're saying he was at 4,500 feet.

[00:14:24] I'm guessing he probably wasn't that far but essentially they activated this rescue with

[00:14:30] the you know our Andrew Schoggen Valley Search and Rescue Mountain Rescue Service and calls

[00:14:38] for me to the on Washington Auto Road and the cog railroad to make preliminary thoughts

[00:14:43] about the best option for getting the rescuers up there.

[00:14:46] It was decided that due to the location it's the only thing that makes sense is the cog

[00:14:50] would make the best make the most sense.

[00:14:53] So the cog was willing to start a special train.

[00:14:56] They put a snowblower on the front to bring the rescuers up to the crossing of the west

[00:15:00] side trail.

[00:15:02] This would say they basically offered this so this is going to save the rescue team.

[00:15:07] Probably three, four miles of climbing up the cog and then cutting over so the offer

[00:15:11] was gladly accepted.

[00:15:14] As the crews responded to the cog railroad they decided they were going to use two trains

[00:15:18] that we're going to do an early team that would clear the path and get started to the GPS

[00:15:22] location.

[00:15:23] It's like minus 50 windshield so they probably think this guy probably has limited time

[00:15:28] absolutely.

[00:15:30] And then they would get a second team that would come up afterwards.

[00:15:33] So the first crew set off on foot from the train on the west side trail.

[00:15:38] And then at that, once that first train came up and dropped off the rescuers another

[00:15:42] call came in.

[00:15:45] And at this point the hiker was able to offer.

[00:15:51] Oh, I guess the call came in they couldn't hear him.

[00:15:55] He called back and the reception was just clear enough to understand that he was no longer

[00:16:00] at the same location but made his way to lakes of the cloud.

[00:16:04] That's amazing.

[00:16:05] He was in that emergency shelter area and he still needed help.

[00:16:11] So good news for him.

[00:16:12] I'm glad he knew about it or maybe he didn't know about it.

[00:16:16] I don't know, I'm not sure.

[00:16:18] I mean he had been there before so he came that way.

[00:16:21] Got you.

[00:16:22] Got you.

[00:16:23] Oh, true.

[00:16:24] Yeah.

[00:16:25] So by that point the second train with a second group of rescuers was dropped off and started

[00:16:29] across the west side trail.

[00:16:31] There's another article that talks about sort of the risk and the cog is that when they

[00:16:36] go up that high in that cold condition, the diesel fuel can actually turn to gel and then

[00:16:43] they can get stuck out there so they didn't want to risk that.

[00:16:46] So I think that they didn't mess around too much.

[00:16:48] They got the rescuers up and then headed back down.

[00:16:50] Right.

[00:16:51] Wow.

[00:16:52] But you know, it's off to the presby's and there's your energy in that whole crew because they

[00:16:59] put in the expensive equipment at risk and their own personnel at risk by going up there

[00:17:04] like that.

[00:17:05] So it was 90,000 all wins, winch, chill of minus 52, ambient temperature of minus nine.

[00:17:11] Right.

[00:17:12] Well, I hate to say it, man.

[00:17:15] Like even though you're in that dungeon at the lake of the clouds, that is not warm unless

[00:17:21] you have the right gear.

[00:17:22] Yeah.

[00:17:23] Yeah.

[00:17:24] I've looked in that place before, like sometimes it gets frozen

[00:17:29] over too.

[00:17:30] You can't even open the door so I don't know if he's inside or just outside.

[00:17:33] Yeah, who knows?

[00:17:34] Anyway, they got to the shelter at 615 and the hiker was injured.

[00:17:42] He's suffering, who's not injured but he was suffering from hypothermia and was wearing

[00:17:45] like a bunch of layers of frozen clothes and frozen hiking shoes and you know, eventually

[00:17:52] like the second wave of rescue was arrived and they were able to warm him up over like

[00:17:57] three hours and take off his wet frozen clothes and place him in extra gear.

[00:18:04] The boots were sought out, thought out so that his frostbite, bitten feet could return

[00:18:09] with dry wool socks that the rescues had put on for him.

[00:18:12] So they fed him, they filled them with warm liquids and then they were able to take

[00:18:17] him down the M. and Usic ravine trail with some assistance.

[00:18:20] He heighted out on his own and they left at 945.

[00:18:24] They got down around 1050.

[00:18:30] They got to the base station of the cog and there was an ambulance waiting, the hiker

[00:18:36] decided that he didn't want to go to the hospital.

[00:18:40] He would take himself and that was it so he brought to his vehicle by 1145.

[00:18:47] So long day for him.

[00:18:49] The nutrition game goes on to say that he made numerous poor decisions regarding the hike.

[00:18:54] He didn't have proper gear, didn't plan the weather correctly, didn't make critical decisions

[00:19:00] to keep himself out of harm's way and they did indicate that the hiker saw other groups

[00:19:07] turn around.

[00:19:08] I'm going to talk about this in a minute but he decided to keep going so you know what

[00:19:14] that sounds like a bill potentially.

[00:19:24] So anyway, the article ends with the list of people who have died on the presidential

[00:19:28] range will stay at 173 for now thanks to the rest you effort that saved the hiker's

[00:19:35] life on etc.

[00:19:37] Just a correction there's actually 171 names on the list.

[00:19:42] Oh, interesting.

[00:19:43] How do you know that?

[00:19:44] Patrick had sent a note over and got you.

[00:19:49] Awesome.

[00:19:50] Yep.

[00:19:51] All's well that ends well.

[00:19:53] There's a little bit more to the story here that I thought was interesting so there's

[00:20:00] another article from the hiker itself in the Boston Globe where he describes the 11-hour

[00:20:06] ordeal and the hiker's like look, I wasn't experienced enough to be up there.

[00:20:10] I made some poor decisions.

[00:20:11] I'm sorry.

[00:20:12] I've learned my lessons.

[00:20:15] If I ever do this again, I'm going to go with a guide.

[00:20:18] I'm not going to risk it anymore.

[00:20:19] It's not worth it.

[00:20:20] I apologize to the rescue team so he understands the gravity of the situation.

[00:20:27] So and he was like I was willing to hike out and you know, I guess they did end up connecting

[00:20:33] him to another rescue who had a harness on them.

[00:20:36] So they weren't 100% confident that he was going to be okay by himself.

[00:20:39] So he's got a little bit of frostbite on his toes and you know, it sounds like he's

[00:20:45] going to live to hike again here and he did learn his lessons.

[00:20:49] Huh.

[00:20:52] So do you see the size of the pack of the fishing game officer in that Boston dot com image?

[00:20:57] Yeah.

[00:20:58] I'm going to be involved in messing around.

[00:21:00] Yeah.

[00:21:01] Oh, yes, and around at all.

[00:21:02] Yep.

[00:21:03] So I think that a bunch of a bunch of equipment on there.

[00:21:08] So in this one other thing about this that I don't think is widely reported is that there

[00:21:14] was a description of the events, this guy hikes solo.

[00:21:19] He actually connected with a group of two other hikers about a half a mile before lakes

[00:21:23] of the cloud.

[00:21:24] Yeah.

[00:21:25] And he stayed with them up until the junction of West side the West side trail.

[00:21:29] So they hike together for about a mile and a half.

[00:21:33] These other two hikers summited Mount Washington and then made it down successfully via the

[00:21:39] cog as this rescue situation was going on.

[00:21:43] Interesting.

[00:21:44] Yeah.

[00:21:45] So this hiker, his username is Sim9 on Reddit in Sim9 and his buddy had been planning

[00:21:52] to hike Mount Washington this day.

[00:21:54] They had posted a couple of questions to the Reddit white, the white mountains group.

[00:22:01] They had talked about like, hey, we're planning to do this.

[00:22:03] A lot of people like the weather's no good.

[00:22:05] Don't do it.

[00:22:06] It's not worth it.

[00:22:07] They win anyway.

[00:22:10] They connected with this hiker that had went on to have trouble about a half a mile before

[00:22:15] lakes of the cloud.

[00:22:17] They started hiking together.

[00:22:19] So this individual hiker that needed a rescue was ahead of them.

[00:22:23] They caught up to him.

[00:22:24] They all joined together to hike together over the course of the mile and a half that

[00:22:30] they hiked together.

[00:22:31] This Sim9 guy and his buddy kind of realized that the hiker that ended up needing the rescue

[00:22:37] wasn't prepared.

[00:22:38] So they made some observations.

[00:22:40] They said that his boots were not serious enough.

[00:22:42] He was wearing like standard run-of-the-mill hiking boots, not winter hiking boots.

[00:22:47] He had no way of carrying his snowshoes so he took them off at lakes hot, carried them

[00:22:53] by his side.

[00:22:54] They said he didn't really have enough water, no insulation in his water bottles.

[00:22:58] He didn't have any goggles.

[00:22:59] He had no mittens or glove liners.

[00:23:01] He was using ski gloves with nothing under them.

[00:23:05] His main outer layer seemed to be like some kind of insulated overalls, which were pretty

[00:23:10] good, but that he was wearing a cotton t-shirt and then he didn't have his fleeced, zipped

[00:23:17] up.

[00:23:19] He brushed off their attempts to dissuade him.

[00:23:22] The Sim9 guy on reddits, I kind of regret not being stronger with him.

[00:23:28] But essentially what happened is that they joined up for about a mile and a half.

[00:23:33] Slowly they realized that this guy wasn't prepared when they got to the junction that's

[00:23:37] about a half a mile before the summit.

[00:23:40] I don't know what the conversation was.

[00:23:44] He ended up going to West Side Trail.

[00:23:46] They went to the summit.

[00:23:48] I would argue in that situation, Stomp, it is safer to go to the summit than to go over

[00:23:54] the West Side Trail in those conditions.

[00:23:57] That way you go to the summit, you've got a little bit of like you can block yourself

[00:24:02] from the wind a little bit when you're on there and then you've got a straight shot

[00:24:05] to follow the cog down.

[00:24:09] That to me is a much better plan than sending a solo guy West Side to have him navigate

[00:24:15] in poor conditions by khearns.

[00:24:18] I don't know what happened when they got to that junction and how they disconnected

[00:24:23] with this guy.

[00:24:24] Right, but it's all speculation.

[00:24:25] I've been in that situation, Stomp, and if I run into a stray hiker especially if I'm

[00:24:30] sniffing that this person doesn't know what they're doing, I'm adoptin that hiker.

[00:24:36] Sure, yeah, I agree, but you can only do so much.

[00:24:40] If he disagrees or he's on his own.

[00:24:44] But I suppose going up, getting the shelter and even going down on a road would be

[00:24:49] the safer bet than in blinding conditions.

[00:24:52] It talks about the fishing game officers are saying that they had a leapfrog, the khearns

[00:24:57] because it was so blinding you couldn't see anything.

[00:25:00] Yeah, yeah.

[00:25:01] I mean, I'm not leaving that guy.

[00:25:02] I don't care.

[00:25:03] Maybe I'm just...

[00:25:07] That's just my opinion is that like the two hikers that broke off, I don't know all the

[00:25:12] details but regardless, I'm not leaving that guy especially if I'm sniffing that he

[00:25:17] doesn't know what he's doing up there.

[00:25:19] And his cotton and regular boots and whatnot.

[00:25:21] Yeah, what was he thinking?

[00:25:23] Holy moly.

[00:25:25] So it's an interesting story.

[00:25:27] I'm not speculating here as to what his intentions were but it reminds me of John from

[00:25:32] Ty's essay.

[00:25:34] Yeah, I mean, I don't know.

[00:25:36] I think he was just legit hiker.

[00:25:39] The funny thing is somebody had posted on Reddit too that he's got it like his all

[00:25:43] trails and he does do a fair amount of hiking but he originally gave the hike like

[00:25:47] a two-star rating.

[00:25:48] He's like, I don't like this one because he can give it like five stars or whatever.

[00:25:53] I think he could lead it after a while but yeah.

[00:25:57] I guess hard lesson learned.

[00:25:58] I mean, huge credit to the search and rescue team for getting out there.

[00:26:03] I mean, they're not going to judge anybody.

[00:26:06] They're just going to go in and rescue and I'm sure they're happy as can be that he got

[00:26:09] down safe and...

[00:26:10] Oh, sure.

[00:26:11] I think you learned a lesson and huge credit to the cog for stepping up and risking their

[00:26:16] equipment risking their personnel.

[00:26:18] It's crazy.

[00:26:19] We just talk with Andy about this and those guys are willing to do what they can do, you

[00:26:23] know, and they'll even risk the equipment in the safety of their team to help people

[00:26:28] out.

[00:26:29] Yeah.

[00:26:30] Yeah.

[00:26:31] Yep.

[00:26:32] And if you heard the weather forecast for this show this weekend is not going to be a joke.

[00:26:37] It's going to be very similar.

[00:26:38] It would snow over the next 24 hours or so.

[00:26:41] And then the sub-zero weather with the windchills.

[00:26:43] So I mean, people just got to use their heads.

[00:26:46] Yeah.

[00:26:47] Yeah.

[00:26:48] I mean, I was planning on hiking Mount Washington this weekend but yeah, I looked at the

[00:26:51] higher summit and we're bailing on it.

[00:26:52] We're going to probably end up doing something else.

[00:26:54] Can't lunch or finish my 4,000 footer winter list or something but...

[00:26:59] My mom.

[00:27:00] Yeah.

[00:27:01] So it's just not worth it.

[00:27:02] So you got to take a look at the weather but honestly like though, you know, I do look

[00:27:06] side-eyed at the two hikers that's summited and broke off from that guy.

[00:27:11] Again, I don't know what was going on with the conversations where I know it's always

[00:27:15] weird when you pick somewhere in and person up on the trail but I'm just...

[00:27:19] I've had that happen to me and I've taken...

[00:27:21] I mean, in fact we had this happen at Lakes of the Cloud.

[00:27:24] We had two solo hikers that were clearly not as experienced to us.

[00:27:28] I was with Camille and Lansing.

[00:27:30] We were like, we're adopting these people and they're coming with us.

[00:27:33] Yes.

[00:27:34] And it wasn't a bad day.

[00:27:36] Unreal.

[00:27:37] So anyway.

[00:27:38] And again, who knows it may have been like if they went with the guy, it could have been

[00:27:42] three people needing a rescue and not one so I could be wrong about that.

[00:27:46] Yeah.

[00:27:47] And what's interesting is just a little side-inside baseball here, there were two other

[00:27:51] rescues going on simultaneously that sort of strained all the other teams.

[00:27:58] Yeah.

[00:27:59] Yeah.

[00:28:00] I mean, they have a way of coming in like waves for some reason.

[00:28:06] Right.

[00:28:07] Very strange.

[00:28:08] Yes.

[00:28:09] But, you know, as for...

[00:28:11] Well, we'll get to the other rescues but I have a theory about why they happened and

[00:28:16] I think it's all to do with the thaw and the freeze that happened last week.

[00:28:22] Really?

[00:28:23] Oh, we got it really too thick.

[00:28:26] Well yeah, I mean just everything melted and then froze up solid again so like Avalon,

[00:28:31] it is steep and you're just laying down a layer of glare ice on it now.

[00:28:36] So I mean, to have two slipping falls on the same day, is your little unusual I would

[00:28:41] think?

[00:28:42] I mean Avalon's like crazy.

[00:28:44] It's like it is.

[00:28:46] Avalon in East Ossie, Ola were like the two craziest winter climbs that...

[00:28:52] It just wasn't expecting them to be that steep but they're really steep so yeah for sure.

[00:28:58] Hey, one of the...

[00:29:00] There was a comment on our Facebook group about somebody was like you know we got to be

[00:29:04] careful about glorifying hikes and you know we shouldn't be discouraged.

[00:29:08] I don't know the details but essentially like I think the theme was like we shouldn't

[00:29:12] talk about doing these hikes because it might inspire people that are clueless to go

[00:29:16] out and hike and I'm like well you know we do our best to try to educate people on

[00:29:21] safety and yeah there's plenty of people that can go out and do these things safely so

[00:29:26] I don't buy into that myself but I figured I'd throw it out and get your opinion.

[00:29:30] Well, I mean what do you know what hikes they were talking about?

[00:29:34] I think we're just talking about us glorifying just difficult hikes and going in bad conditions

[00:29:41] and in relation to this kid that got rescued on Mount Washington.

[00:29:45] Well first of all we're not telling people to go in full conditions that's for sure but

[00:29:50] when it comes to hikes I mean...

[00:29:52] Yeah.

[00:29:53] I mean I'm not.

[00:29:54] Maybe you are either not.

[00:29:55] No, absolutely not.

[00:29:59] No those days are all done with nope.

[00:30:02] Nope no no no no but yeah I mean it's fair game talking about hikes that are available

[00:30:07] and public trails.

[00:30:08] Yeah, yeah we're trying to educate make sure the people do things safe but also I mean

[00:30:13] there's a lot of people that do winter hiking and it's a great thing to do and you can

[00:30:17] do it safely you just have to worry about the weather or what makes sure you gear is dial

[00:30:22] in and take it slow.

[00:30:24] Yep, absolutely.

[00:30:26] Alright stop so that's the Mount Washington situation we'll see if anybody has any additional

[00:30:32] news on it but hopefully this young man learned a lesson.

[00:30:38] I think so.

[00:30:39] Yeah I think so.

[00:30:42] Wanted to give a shout out to little foot so Scarlett I think she's seven or eight years

[00:30:47] old at this point so yeah she in her grandparents Kim and Mark who do most of the hiking

[00:30:54] with her or all of the hiking with her and then they have a whole crew of like pretty

[00:30:59] consistent people that will join in on her hike so typically they'll go out with like

[00:31:04] seven or eight people and it's a consistent group.

[00:31:07] So she was able to finish her winter 4,000 footer list on Mount Heal last weekend so I

[00:31:14] was over in Zeeland Hot and I knew she had been finishing our backup plan which we're going

[00:31:19] to go over to Heal if conditions weren't good but conditions ended up being good for

[00:31:23] us so we didn't have going over there but I just wanted to congratulate her in the entire

[00:31:28] group there they're really inspirational and I think I was looking at a post at Mike

[00:31:33] Macyl who has been on the show he's a guy at Red Line guiding.

[00:31:37] He had summed up the accomplishment pretty nicely so I just wanted to read what he wrote

[00:31:42] on his own personal social media page and then you know see if you have any comments

[00:31:47] but Mike wrote that her grandparents Kim and Mark have given her the have given her

[00:31:52] the greatest gift by showing her this life resilience determination strength community

[00:31:58] and most important of all opportunity in a world that constantly tells you that you can't

[00:32:03] she can and she knows it what a lesson to learn at such a young age the sky is the limit

[00:32:10] to where those little feet can take her so I thought that was a good it's awfully sweet

[00:32:15] yeah I thought that was a good kind of bow on the accomplishment.

[00:32:18] Yeah absolutely so is this her first winter 48?

[00:32:22] Yes she's doing the grid I think she's like 200 in sum it's into the grid but this is her

[00:32:28] yeah this is her official finish of the winter 4,000 footer.

[00:32:32] Very nice very nice so I'm sure she'll be at the awards ceremony.

[00:32:36] She will yeah and in fact I'm going to be finishing my winter 4,000 footer on Mount

[00:32:41] Hill as well so very nice really by design but it just worked out that way yeah okay cool

[00:32:49] so yeah alright stop and then next up here we had a listener Ken sent along info on an

[00:32:56] upcoming event in Boston this April the Boston outdoor expo which is being held on April 27th

[00:33:03] and 28th at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center why aren't we we should be there without

[00:33:08] table I suppose I've never heard of this before so thank you Ken for sending it along

[00:33:13] yeah it sounds great I took a little cruise to the website looks like a great time so if

[00:33:17] you're in the area in the Boston area check it out and looks like it's right up the alley

[00:33:22] for a lot of listeners yeah matter of fact I'm going to be in I'm going to be in the city next

[00:33:30] week so maybe I will go check it out here yeah there you go exhibitors they've got the AMC is

[00:33:37] going to be there the Boston ski and sports club. You know what you can do you can barge through

[00:33:44] the doors and at top volume yell yes yeah the Mont Maunbike Association I would bound is there

[00:34:00] yeah so there's a bunch of interesting exhibitors next year next year well we'll have a table

[00:34:07] up next year with our poultry stickers yes all right so the Boston Expo Center all right so next

[00:34:17] up here stop FDA approves first medication to treat severe frostbite so this is interesting what's

[00:34:24] this all about yeah especially in light of the recent stories so this is a medication that was

[00:34:29] studied in a 12-year trial which is actually refreshing to see a nice long term study

[00:34:35] and it included 47 adults who had severe frostbite and apparently what this medication does

[00:34:41] is it just dilates the blood vessels and even in severe condition severe

[00:34:48] hypothermic frostbite conditions and allows the blood flow to resume so you know it's I guess

[00:34:54] it may have some other potential uses for say peripheral vascular disease rain nodes disease perhaps

[00:35:02] diabetes we shall see yeah yeah yeah it's pretty exciting stuff and the names so they could

[00:35:08] eventually tinker with this to give like lower doses for people that are going out in cold weather

[00:35:13] and maybe help them with their rain oils or something that's the that's the question right

[00:35:21] so this stuff is called our you forget it we're not going to be able to pronounce this it's A-U-R-L-U-M-Y-N

[00:35:31] our Lumen are Lumen are Lumen yes are Lumen so pretty cool news on these frostbite front

[00:35:45] so you have frost it's interesting so they did like this 47 adults that had severe frostbite

[00:35:53] and they put them in like three different groups none of the patients who received

[00:36:01] or Lumen required amputation 19% in the second group and 60% in the third if I was in the third

[00:36:08] group I'd be like listen give me the drug don't test this I just want the drug

[00:36:12] so that's hilarious yeah I want the drug I don't want to lose my arm so but that's promising

[00:36:20] so we'll see so I just move one story down a little lower but um we do have um uh

[00:36:27] uh an article that was sent in by listener Tim Larkin have you seen this mic about this

[00:36:32] uh human remains that were found in the birch years I did I did clearly immediately we have a

[00:36:38] serial killer anytime remains of found you have to say that it's there's a serial killer yeah yeah

[00:36:44] especially in mass but this is weird I mean it happened in what Lennox Mountain apparently this

[00:36:50] hiker went missing um let's see let's get these details here February 9th a hiker and his dog

[00:36:58] located a hiking boot with human remains inside and the person that is missing or was missing

[00:37:07] apparently was missing from october 30th 2023 and uh they don't believe there's any foul play going

[00:37:15] on here but they did positively identify the remains as those of Susan Lockwood and she was hiking

[00:37:23] in Lennox Mountain in the birch years so they don't know they don't know any details yet on how she died

[00:37:29] not according to this article it's a very brief article um but it is interesting I know where that

[00:37:36] mountain is and it's not exactly a mountain it's like just a rolling hill so to speak

[00:37:40] but uh yeah we shall see but uh yeah the birch years have a serial killer yeah no that hopefully it's

[00:37:48] on a serial killer but when I went to school out there they arrested a serial killer like when I was

[00:37:53] a senior in college yeah they arrested this guy Lewis Lent and this guy was like straight out

[00:38:00] of central casting for a serial killer like big thick coat bottle glasses he was like a janitor

[00:38:07] to let a school he was a kidnapping and killing like little girl it was like creepy okay people

[00:38:15] have freaked out huh wild yeah yeah so he's um serving a life sentence I think and maybe you see

[00:38:24] really hopefully he died by now but I don't know hmm that's funny well hey we have some animal

[00:38:31] news for changing oh yeah what's going on there well this uh this first story is pretty interesting

[00:38:38] I I labeled it in the script as another death while doing what they love now this one is pretty

[00:38:45] crazy and uh this comes to us let's see where did this happen this was in India okay so a man is

[00:38:55] maltedeth by a lion after entering enclosure to do what guess what take a selfie take a selfie yeah

[00:39:05] yeah yeah so this for your three-year-old man was maltedeth he entered a schulacan um zoo apparently and

[00:39:14] I wanted to take a selfie with a wild animal and he scaled this for a while uh then he scaled

[00:39:21] the six foot tall iron fence and took a selfie doing what he loves yeah so there you go so the oh

[00:39:29] by the way the incident remains ongoing the investigation I wonder what happened

[00:39:37] yeah jeez I wonder if they have uh cameras in the I'm sure that they do yeah

[00:39:44] I don't know that's that's a sad story isn't it yeah well he got a selfie is the very last selfie

[00:39:54] yes all right and we have two other animal stories this is a scary one

[00:40:01] cyclists fight off kugger attack that leaves woman injured and this comes out of Seattle

[00:40:08] this is terrifying actually I had no idea that uh kugger is up in that area Seattle

[00:40:12] Washington yeah but uh a woman is recovering from a kugger attack kugger attacked a group of

[00:40:19] cyclists near Seattle Washington woman and four others were biking on a trail in their fall

[00:40:24] city about 25 miles east of Seattle when they were attacked by a kugger she was pounced on by the

[00:40:30] kugger the other cyclist jumped into action to fight the large feline and she came walking away with

[00:40:37] injuries to her face and neck I mean you I'm terrified by this story like you know I battle

[00:40:44] Zylos sometimes and I come away in rough shape when you're dealing with a 75 pound kugger

[00:40:49] yeah I don't know your chances aren't that great so that's a really interesting story

[00:40:54] well one of the cyclists was able to pin this thing down I can't imagine one of the other

[00:40:59] ones was able to like take off in the woods so that's nice like maybe help the other cyclist like

[00:41:05] grab the grab the damn kugger but it is like it's impossible to keep like those cats are very like

[00:41:11] squirmy like they keep pin them down absolutely and those those claws holy moly I wouldn't

[00:41:18] know how long the claws are in a 75 pound kugger but I'm sure there are a couple inches long

[00:41:24] yeah incredible well stomp when I was down on Florida at the retirement home I got attacked by

[00:41:31] a couple of kuggers not the cat kind oh I think this is for a different podcast right

[00:41:39] put on pump oh my goodness that's bad yeah that would get a bit up yeah so finally listen

[00:41:50] our hola it's Heather sent a message we were chatting about some of those normal be a

[00:41:55] accidents and she says quote watch for moose on the trail we just got back from riding uh yeah

[00:42:02] apparently a night ride and a moose came out of nowhere and it charged me and I had to hit the

[00:42:08] throttle and haul ass it was so close I could hear it snorting wow yeah that's wild

[00:42:16] yes we were talking on on our hike Saturday about moose and my friend Pito was saying that and I

[00:42:23] actually didn't know this but he said they have terrible eyesight oh sure yeah okay but they

[00:42:29] can still hear the noise of the the engines perhaps and yeah they can smell and then stuff but I

[00:42:35] guess they have terrible eyesight so which it can explain sometimes where they'll just sit on trail

[00:42:40] and they're not um not moving that much they just can't really see what's going on around them

[00:42:45] too well yep and from what I understand a lot of them are demented because of the disease that

[00:42:50] they're struggling with yeah yeah brain wasting we all know that hiking a mountain can be hard

[00:42:59] at times so here's a corny dad joke to help you get over it but um-bump all right stop it's the part

[00:43:09] of the show where I do a dad joke oh I can't wait all right so what do you get called a teacher who

[00:43:16] doesn't fart in public uh teacher who doesn't fart in public I feel like this is like another

[00:43:23] this is like there's been a couple of these dad jokes that involve farting but what do you call

[00:43:28] a teacher who doesn't fart in public dude I got it a substitute teacher oh your close your close

[00:43:37] it's a private tutor oh I get to do but that I'm gonna give you I'll give you credit for that

[00:43:44] answer because that's actually way better I would have never got that and that's funny yeah all right

[00:43:48] that's the first time I've ever got a dad joke they're always so obvious but yeah all right cool

[00:43:53] I'm getting the hang of that thanks again to our friends Lance and Camilla for 365 days of dad jokes

[00:44:00] yeah and the lucky sponsor that follows the uh the fart joke is Phil Stone Kombucha so that's

[00:47:03] so how is it compared to say it's very this sir it's good it's a little bit different

[00:47:06] i'm used to the IPAs but i like this i like the stout it's like a brown beer it's a little

[00:47:11] nutty i like it yeah i saw some of that stuff the other day can you see this

[00:47:17] oh yeah yeah hot hot wax wise yeah this is interesting so it's um it's a collaboration it says

[00:47:24] doe style and it's the Von Trap and Fox farm collaboration it's hopfen vice when it's a dry hop

[00:47:31] to wheat ale coming in at 5.5 ABV and again it's just a collaboration part of the collaboration

[00:47:40] series and it's actually really tasty enjoying it i'm doing my best to really branch out and

[00:47:47] try some random stuff you're doing great stomp thanks

[00:47:51] i know we should have gone left back there stomp don't worry i know it's this way i've got a feeling

[00:48:02] in my gut uh are you sure you're not about to have a bowel emergency uh totally we got this

[00:48:09] but i just blew out my hip fell down that gully with my 40 year old microspikes suck it up stomp

[00:48:15] it's 4 p.m. we're at 3500 feet we got nine miles back to the parking lot your leg may be broken

[00:48:22] we got no cell connection and we can't feel our fingers but we're finishing all of my list tonight

[00:48:27] by the way i need some water i'm empty i would if i could see what i'm doing but my headland

[00:48:33] battery is a dead you gotta be kidding me what a jump this is the last time i hike with you

[00:48:38] sshh whatever mr. do you know me i have a podcast sshh whatever

[00:48:46] let's find out what mike and stomp have been hiking

[00:48:52] all right um this is the part of the show we talked about recent hike so uh stop why don't you go

[00:48:59] i know you haven't been hiking but you've been yeah snowmobile yeah well it was an interesting

[00:49:04] weekend i think at the same time when we were hit with giant blinding squalls you were hiking right

[00:49:11] weren't you up on all right yeah so i was i was i was thinking of you because i was up on the top

[00:49:16] of japhacinot road and it was absolutely blinding and uh i couldn't see perhaps 10 feet in front

[00:49:23] of the sled and i could barely see the people behind me and we were at a crawl at about you know

[00:49:28] five miles an hour for a good 20 minutes it was wild it was better be safe than then we'd

[00:49:33] be flying around in those conditions oh yeah absolutely but i had not been in squalid conditions like

[00:49:40] that squalish is probably a bed word uh first long as i can remember it's pretty pretty terrifying

[00:49:47] stuff and uh sunday was pretty well we had a crash one of the other tour guides um experience

[00:49:53] the crash we were or they were coming across mount clinton road and bearing left onto the access

[00:50:00] road where the cog is and uh the person uh hit the throttle by accident and just ended up crashing

[00:50:06] in this required a response by ems you know twin mountain showed up fishing game and um it was

[00:50:14] pretty hardcore pretty banged up badly and um i actually was at the uh the starting point where

[00:50:20] the cabin is and um i had two tours that were lined up to go out and we ended up basically canceling

[00:50:26] them and i just i i went out on a snowmobile to bring back the other guides guests so that they

[00:50:34] could deal with you know fishing game and everything else but it was bad man yeah and yeah it just

[00:50:40] happens it happens but you know i think the sled hit a little bump and just yeah the rest is history

[00:50:47] yeah it's rough i mean it is it takes it's a learning curve and it is sometimes i think it

[00:50:52] takes more than one day or even people well meaning they go slow and then they just you know

[00:50:57] they hit the throttle the wrong way so yeah i don't fix it i don't either and i'm shocked at all

[00:51:03] the stories this year we'll cover two later that are really interesting and unusual but uh the

[00:51:07] other so many yeah but uh anyhow well i had a big adventure stomp yeah okay we did

[00:51:18] we stayed over at the zealand hot so i had a crew of it was uh three of us so there was um

[00:51:28] Peter Jake and Steve yep of stevee chit fame he's got a great instagram page check it out

[00:51:37] he's actually a guy so the four of us and then we had i've been in contact with one of the listeners

[00:51:43] who had said that she was going to be up there with the crew of people so we connected with

[00:51:48] Audrey Dan and Dave so we basically had a crew of seven of us um that went they were in the park

[00:51:54] and not only got there so we ended up you know kind of hiking in with them we got a little separated

[00:51:58] but you know basically getting in there at the same time so we were kind of the parking lot was pretty

[00:52:05] pretty busy so we were kind of thinking maybe there'd be more people there so i think zealand hot

[00:52:12] has enough space for it gets 36 people maybe 38 people maybe it's a little bit less uh but it

[00:52:20] ended up being there was 13 of us so there was our group of seven and then it was a family like uh

[00:52:25] grandparents uh a young lady a young girl like nine year old girl and then her dad and then maybe

[00:52:34] like an uncle and then uh there's something so it was a family so it kind of worked out perfect

[00:52:38] because we took one half and then they took the other um half and the way it's set up there is

[00:52:45] there's like triple bunks yeah so we took like i took a bunk like in the middle so that like

[00:52:53] the second level and i was like i'll just go up close to where the stove is and maybe it'll be

[00:52:57] a little warmer so the room itself is not heated but it's not like

[00:53:03] it was like probably i don't know five degrees or something at night but it was a little bit warmer

[00:53:09] in there it was probably close to like 20 20 degrees 25 degrees so it wasn't too bad

[00:53:14] bummy yeah bummy a little bit and um you know the the caretaker was great his name was Peter

[00:53:22] super nice guy we'd actually run into him on on Madison like a week or two before Steve knew him

[00:53:29] so we were talking again catching up and um he had the stove going at like four o'clock when

[00:53:35] we got there so the the actual main room was pretty warm and i sat right next to the i immediately

[00:53:42] parked like right next to the stove and elbowed everybody else out of the way

[00:53:46] haha so uh was toasty and then just used the stove cook dinner i brought some shredded chicken

[00:53:53] with me so i heated that up yeah and um everybody else just had like I think cold meals and um

[00:54:01] yeah but it was it was good we we probably went to bed around eight o'clock i slept like

[00:54:05] horribly because i was all stuffed up so you know how sometimes your sinuses will fill up on one side

[00:54:12] and then the other and you can't get comfortable yeah remember you had to sort of

[00:54:17] fighting a little cold last week yeah a little cold so i still fighting that so super uncomfortable

[00:54:22] had to pee like three times so ended up getting up to pee and then finally around midnight i ended

[00:54:27] up falling asleep for good and we woke up at like five or forty six in the morning so cheese yeah which

[00:54:34] is fine and we got on trail i think Audrey Dan and Dave got on trail like about 10 15 minutes before

[00:54:43] us and then we headed up maybe around seven forty five so they broke trail it was maybe about six

[00:54:51] inches of snow from zealand hot up to z cliff they broke trail um up to z cliff and then we connected

[00:55:01] with them once we connected then then we were like all right let's all stay together that was sort

[00:55:07] of our first checkpoint because we were like we don't know what the weather's gonna be like as it

[00:55:10] could be like crazy winds and there was no winds on ze cliff and we were actually seeing blue skies

[00:55:16] so at that point we said okay let's keep going um but the snow started getting deeper and deeper

[00:55:23] so we had to go through like that bog section pass ze cliff and uh we made our way to zealand do that

[00:55:30] that section from ze cliff to zealand is long it's long but flatish right no no it's kind of like

[00:55:37] uphill a lot puds oh okay it's like three like it's like three levels of uphill yeah first of all

[00:55:45] it's deep to get up to ze cliff oh sure that's steep enough and then from there you still got like

[00:55:51] i think it's like a mile and a half from ze cliff to um to zealand it feels like it

[00:55:57] um and there was one section in there where we were up to our hips in snow come on

[00:56:03] yeah yeah from the drips snow yeah okay some gotcha yeah so did you check uh the trail conditions

[00:56:10] to see if anybody had broken this out beforehand um i did i didn't see anything it wouldn't

[00:56:18] have mattered everything is wind blown in there like i don't think that breaking trail makes a

[00:56:22] difference for when you're talking about that zealand bond section there yeah everything just gets

[00:56:27] wind blown over okay interesting so from ze cliff we got a nice view of white wall which was good

[00:56:34] and it was we were seen a little bit of blue sky we weren't hearing any wind yeah and we were like

[00:56:40] i think this is i think we were at that point we were like i think we're good

[00:56:44] and we were like keeping an eye on it and um that will come into play later oh hell yeah yeah

[00:56:51] i can imagine things got ugly later but so we we finally get to zealand and we're rotating like

[00:56:57] dav broke a bunch of trail there and then you know we rotated pretty well and seven people was a good

[00:57:04] number the the snow was not bad it was very light and fluffy but it's just sometimes that light

[00:57:10] and fluffy snow when you're breaking trail can be worse because you slip backwards so um

[00:57:16] um we get to zealand everybody's feeling good and then we get to we head over to geote and again

[00:57:23] zealand to geote is another long hike it is i was like i feel i can't i don't know what it

[00:57:29] is in my mind i'm like these are all right next to each other but there it's another mile is so to

[00:57:33] get to geode were you breaking that mile two oh sure yeah oh man yeah that's uphill yeah so it

[00:57:41] was heartbreaking trail and i actually did a good piece of that one yeah um i was like trying to

[00:57:48] stay in the mean Audrey will like trying to stay in the back a little bit like we'll we'll stay

[00:57:52] in the back but we rotated through i did do a lot of work later on um but then yet we get to geode

[00:58:00] and then once we got above treeline it got a little dicey we had to put our goggles on yeah

[00:58:06] and i was behind the group those six of them went and then i lost them and then i started following

[00:58:11] them we get it again that peeled area is like uh it's like a confusing it is dude so confusing

[00:58:20] carry place yeah it's like i we so i'm heading i first of all on by myself they all head down

[00:58:27] i was just getting my gloves and my my goggles situated restarting to cry no no but i was like

[00:58:33] i i don't want to i don't want them to worry about me how i do yeah as i'm heading down

[00:58:39] i see this group of six people heading towards me and i was like oh there's another group coming up

[00:58:44] yeah cuz i was like oh i didn't but it was it was our group what they had done is there's

[00:58:49] like this little narrows there's like a five hundred foot section of scrub between the lower

[00:58:56] section of geode and the higher section of geode and they have high stats opening yeah it's

[00:59:03] self-serve trail exactly so they had hike past that opening i was coming towards them they were

[00:59:08] coming back looking for where the opening into the scrub area is and i was like overshooting it

[00:59:16] to the left they were heading back up towards me and then we realized peter found it i think and

[00:59:21] realized like oh yeah it's kind of like to the right of where we were so we did find it but it's

[00:59:27] like a threading a needle to find a tiny little trail that goes through that scrub correct um yeah

[00:59:32] and then when you get to geode then you've got to go down into the twin way and that's another narrow

[00:59:38] tiny little trail that was completely covered over by snow so we weren't sure if we got it so i

[00:59:46] ended up going down verified on my my app that we were on the right trail and then we all went

[00:59:53] and then that's when things got tough because the the wind was okay visibility was okay but it was

[01:00:00] a little rough on geode so you never saw the junction sign we saw some signs but it was like

[01:00:07] yeah because there's a junction sign where you can go right on twin way and then left on

[01:00:12] balk lift trail right i don't know honestly pretty sure i don't remember any signs being

[01:00:20] helpful but essentially when you come off a geode you're on twin way and you head up to geode

[01:00:26] campsite in west bond yeah that section was like a foot of snow the whole way through and we were

[01:00:34] I was in the front break and trail the whole time so from geode to west bond i broke trail in the

[01:00:41] front and then everyone was behind me i was a little bit ahead because i was like i'm going to make

[01:00:47] it to the i'm gonna get out i was just like in a zone i stopped i did not even see the spur trail

[01:00:54] to get to geode ten site didn't even see it i came up on the trail to west bond the trail sign

[01:00:59] to west bond i was like how did i miss the geode trail sign like yeah it was just a big snow

[01:01:06] yeah yeah it's just like it's just very confusing in that area and it's it doesn't matter if the

[01:01:13] trail's broken out because the wind is gonna blow that snow all back on the trail right did you

[01:01:19] guys go out to west bond so we went out to west bond um i must have been here in west bond was

[01:01:28] like gorgeous like blue sky perfect conditions calm this could be yeah no and nothing that's hilarious

[01:01:37] wow yes squalls are deadly man well we didn't get the squalls yet so we got a little bit of

[01:01:41] a squall on geode then it was like clearing when we got to west bond peter and a couple of other

[01:01:49] people went up to bond ahead of time a couple of us were just sort of getting situated having a snack

[01:01:55] eating at west bond and then we things started changing you could hear the wind by the time we

[01:02:02] made it up to bond i was in one section where i couldn't see a foot in front of my face i didn't have

[01:02:09] my goggles on either so wind was just whipping up snow and you couldn't see a foot in front of your

[01:02:14] face did you guys all stay together tight um so peter and steve were ahead yeah so they headed

[01:02:22] down to bond cliff a little bit in front of us yeah no we were able to spot them up ahead but

[01:02:29] the five of us went down so bond was created so we geared up we got our goggles on

[01:02:34] went down to bond cliff broke out of the tree line and that's when it was like i posted the video

[01:02:40] it was like the squalls came in and you could see like nothing yeah wind is whipping up we got hit

[01:02:45] with like probably 50 mile in our wind gust i would say i was at the point where i was leaning over

[01:02:51] into the wind keeping me just stood up so okay yeah definitely four conditions but then as

[01:02:57] nervous no not really because you can we could see enough i could see vis i had visibility so it was

[01:03:03] okay yeah um it was like not a lot of visibility but enough that we could see see the trail and then

[01:03:11] by the time we actually got to bond cliff it started clearing up oh good well it seems to work

[01:03:18] out good for you then yeah yeah it was about a mile worth of like rough conditions and then a

[01:03:24] mile and it was like maybe 15 20 minutes worth of time yeah got it wow cool man yeah and then

[01:03:31] it was the death march out which was of course uh it always is i bet you were like oh man i wish

[01:03:37] you could just jog this get over with no i was like i need to sit down for five minutes so we actually

[01:03:42] sat down and we got to the bottom of bond cliff trail and i was like i just need to have like a snack

[01:03:47] i collect myself before we do the Lincoln Woods piece of it so oh we got it back to the car

[01:03:52] like five forty five so it was a long day oh yeah but you know we got it done it's i don't know for how

[01:03:58] happy i would have been to do that without staying at the hot though because like the road walk and

[01:04:03] getting up to the hot so long you know it's another six miles you add on to it yeah it's tough man

[01:04:09] well congrats so that brings you up to what for your winter 48 47 wow one more to go

[01:04:17] yep and it could be this weekend you think uh probably not i'll do it i'll do it at some point

[01:04:24] i'll let you know right when i get up all right man well nice work everybody yes yeah it was great

[01:04:32] crew and we posted some good pictures on the the instagram and stuff so check it out yeah and be

[01:04:38] careful up a geo um if there's calls for squalls you just could really play it safe

[01:04:45] yeah i mean that area like you said stop it's just very confusing it you can't rely on the

[01:04:51] tree even if the trails broke i don't like you can't rely on that because the wind is just going to

[01:04:55] cause drifts it the other thing too you know what was happening was that um the way the drifts

[01:05:01] were working is that you would see like okay one half of the trail is kind of like there's not a

[01:05:06] lot of drifts so we'll go to the left and then when you do that what ends up happening is you you

[01:05:12] step in a spruce trap and then you get down even in your snowshoes so like the the drifts can be

[01:05:17] dangerous because you can you can get pushed to one side of the trail or the other depending on

[01:05:23] where the snow drift is heaviest and you go to the light section but what you don't realize is

[01:05:28] like you step in in your snowshoes into a deep spruce trap that happened to us like multiple times

[01:05:35] so you gotta be careful especially if you're solo hiking like you you you got to really stay

[01:05:40] in the middle of the trail even if you think like oh i'm gonna go off to the side a little bit

[01:05:44] because there's less snow like stay disciplined correct yeah and that's the classic scenario where

[01:05:52] a fresh battery GPS can come in handy you know absolutely yeah um i've been in it makes me keep

[01:06:00] spruce traps what's that again oh i've been in those deep spruce traps with nick rollo

[01:06:07] number years back heading over to medicine it's exhausting and it's so tiring yeah yeah like

[01:06:14] there'll be a monorail underneath but you're you're avoiding the monorail because you think

[01:06:18] you're going to a section where there's less deep snow but you're really just you can't step too

[01:06:23] close to the trees because you'll fall in yeah credible wow all right well it was type type two

[01:06:32] funds it sounds it yes it does well yeah well here we go does here's the next sponsor and uh

[01:06:42] did you have your rock loose on your back this weekend i didn't for this one because um

[01:06:48] i had so much stuff packed yeah that um and i had my big my big backpack on so it's it doesn't

[01:06:55] perfectly fit it so yeah right but i will this weekend i'll put it back on it's just i had so

[01:06:59] much stuff yeah i just was too honestly i was a little too lazy to put it on yeah they've

[01:09:26] shaking off the sting of last week's notable hike loss to a dog not even hiking in Canada

[01:09:33] and feeling a multiple tie this week i mean what am i up against mic finishing is winter 48

[01:09:41] little foot doing the same yeah this is the week co-notable hiker here i come

[01:09:48] not a chance so yeah we're gonna have to climb on average to get it

[01:09:55] it's so great so when we start off we mentioned a little foot congratulations finishing the winter 48

[01:10:03] on hail that's super cool that was tagged by the lens weatzer ginger beard keen finished the

[01:10:09] bell nap range that's cool that's on my bucket list for sure yep full strength coffee did the

[01:10:15] Garfield Ridge trail and saw a red fox now that's a rarity it got to be in the right place at the

[01:10:22] right time you carry hikes a lot did number 34 on galehead with minus 15 degree winchills

[01:10:32] and survived to tag us that very good very good mic Latavaya sorry i butchered that i'm sure

[01:10:41] Brooks Fisher to Crawford Ridgepole for some great views of the lakes i love that area

[01:10:47] um i've actually been thinking about doing that traverse very very soon if i even maybe this

[01:10:55] Friday after uh virtual so we'll see okay yeah one then we'll see finney finish business with that

[01:11:02] that area right still yeah it's the chip of my shoulder yeah no doubt about it but uh this

[01:11:09] blew me away i love this video so much cammy fit 71 uh posted us onto cum set with this epic

[01:11:16] butz led video unbelievable she texted me like the video or it was like unbelievable yeah you know

[01:11:22] as i was watching it i didn't read the commentary under the the post but i was thinking was it where

[01:11:27] was this was it uh you know come so yeah it's amazing but i was thinking like caragane but yeah wow

[01:11:34] she was cruising and the video went on and on and on and on and on it was so great so very cool

[01:11:40] and they go just just for a pro tip here is they go late in the day so they're like they make sure

[01:11:46] they're kind of the last ones going down so that they don't have to deal with any hikers coming up

[01:11:52] up the trail yeah that's smart yep uh couple more here so Liz fey and Dave shits in the woods

[01:11:59] blue mountain chakora blue mountain northwest and blue mountain northeast i have no idea where these are

[01:12:06] i'm assuming they're near chakora do you have any idea where these are i do um in these conditions

[01:12:14] that's pretty notable that might be a cold notable hike of the week you don't think

[01:12:20] hmm see but i think it's it's off of like middle sister trail so when you go

[01:12:28] um yeah it's kind of like um off to the right of middle sister trail so

[01:12:35] it's not that far actually off trail and then when you get to blue mountain there's another summit

[01:12:42] that's over there so um i've always come kind of curious about that so i wonder if there's views i don't know

[01:13:51] our fox very cool very cool i'm gonna keep that theme going on with Dave's gonna be bitter because

[01:13:57] he lost it fox oh my goodness this is too much and uh this would be where we're going into our

[01:14:06] interview with Eric Hamilton but that will be next week and um just to start off the search and

[01:14:52] purple t-shirt let's turn the white mountains purple to end Alzheimer's visit alts.org right slash

[01:14:59] 48 peaks to learn more and uh i was invited to DJ so that's super cool so if anybody wants to hear

[01:15:05] anything particular send us some message and i'll jot it down

[01:15:35] awesome stop so um we're gonna start off recent search and rescue news with a visit to your

[01:15:54] neighborhood yeah i know i was jealous like injured hiker on well sticky trail in waterville valley

[01:16:02] so this happened on what is today the 22nd it was the same day as the uh day i'm a new sick

[01:16:11] so February 17th so 1240 fishing game notified of an injured hiker the hiker had been descending

[01:16:19] Welsh mountain um which one is Welsh? Balsch is going counterclockwise the first one on the

[01:16:26] the right as you're going counterclockwise okay so the the one in the back of that being you

[01:16:32] and in my friend j went and found that big plateau that's that's dicky correct that's dicky right okay

[01:16:39] so Welsh um so this hiker suffered a serious lower leg injury that prevented her from being able to

[01:16:45] finish the hike so rescuers from the waterville valley department of public safety camped in thwart and

[01:16:51] fire and rescue pemy valley saw our team in conservation offices with fishing game responded

[01:16:58] the first rescues reached the injured hiker at 245 choose about 1.3 miles in the trailhead

[01:17:07] Massachusetts hiker from Somerville due to the nature of the injury they put her

[01:17:13] they put her in a litter and they carried it on the trail at times they had to belay the litter

[01:17:17] with rope on steep icy portions of the trail and they ended up getting her out at about 4.30 so

[01:17:25] fishing game gave the hiker kudos she was well prepared for winter hike and they were in

[01:17:29] microspike extraction device so things happened she just must have slipped or something so

[01:17:37] but all is well that ends well in this one correct yeah apparently it was near the one of the

[01:17:41] lower ledges on a Welsh those ledges are pretty massive oh yeah yeah tricky up there so your

[01:17:48] theory about like so your your theory is that we had a warming and then a freezing and everything got

[01:17:53] just too slick for everybody well yeah yeah essentially it froze last weekend after that 50 degree day

[01:18:01] everything got melted and then froze up hard and then it snowed again so all that ice was covered

[01:18:08] up with a nice pretty layer of powder and that's just my assumption that people were just

[01:18:15] tackling some ice underneath that caused these problems yeah yeah two in one day yeah two in one

[01:18:23] three in one day this other one Saturday February 27th this one came in at 250 so this is on

[01:18:31] Mount Avalon so for people that aren't familiar with Mount Avalon it's on the 52 with a view

[01:18:36] like Welch Stickey it is at the same location where you would climb Mount Willie Tom and Field so it's

[01:18:45] right at the and also Mount Willard so it's right at the train station at the Highland Center in

[01:18:55] Crawford notch so a lot of people will add Avalon on as a loop to do Willie Tom and Field so there's

[01:19:04] a section of this trail that's super super steep though so it is sketchy when it when it freezes over

[01:19:09] so this call came in at three o'clock on Saturday Hiker was located just below the summit of Mount

[01:19:15] Avalon which is right by the steepest part of the trail is right as you approach the summit

[01:19:21] she's unable to move on her own this is the terrible spot today it's an even yes you terrible

[01:19:27] so like before her injury she'd been using a small sled to assist her down some steep sections of

[01:19:32] the trail unfortunately she could not control her speed and direction and hit a tree which caused

[01:19:40] her to suffer a lower leg injury so she was hiking with a friend who stayed with her as other

[01:19:45] good Samaritan hiker's reached out offering assistance so that's great they are able to provide

[01:19:49] her with extra clothing to stay warm while awaiting rescue personnel so it's a 37-year-old Hiker from

[01:19:54] mean so all right I have questions yeah go ahead yeah well I mean were they butt sledding

[01:20:03] I mean she had a sled and she was on a butt so I think yes okay so that brings up topics

[01:20:13] I would not that section of Avalon there's no way that I would I mean I might butt sled with

[01:20:18] the out of sled in that section sure to be to not gain speed yeah I mean I would be damn sure my

[01:20:28] feet were able to dig into the trail itself wow interesting but I don't know maybe she just did

[01:20:36] full send and just nailed the tree I don't know yeah fastest no one butts sled yeah I mean for me

[01:20:42] from the butt sledding and I've done a fear amount of it in the last couple of weeks is I don't

[01:20:47] wear my microspikes I take them off and I've got like a pretty good strong pair of leather work gloves

[01:20:55] so everything's in my backpack and then I'm on the I got the sled I've got my boots with no spikes

[01:21:02] on so I can dig into the snow and then I've got my leather work gloves so I can dig into the snow

[01:21:08] and I'm actually like almost clawing my hands into the snow as I'm going and then I'm digging my

[01:21:14] feet in at the same time so I can stop and then I'm not going down anything that's excessively

[01:21:18] steep if I do have to go down something excessively steep then I'm I'm not using a sled I'm just butt

[01:21:24] sledding down yeah make sense but if you if like you said is correct and it was frozen over

[01:21:31] and then or if it was warmed up and then frozen over again then it could be that if other people

[01:21:36] will butt sledding down it it just could be super fast and she just lost control yeah I mean I'm

[01:21:42] just going by what I saw on the snowmobile trails and a lot of the corners the certain sections were

[01:21:49] just absolute glare ice that the fresh snow had just been pushed off of so you could see the underbelly

[01:21:54] and it was not pretty yeah yeah well so the call came in around three the rescue has got to her

[01:22:02] around 530 so she was good there was good enough she was lucky enough to have some good

[01:22:07] Samaritan or the hikers a kept a warm two and a half hour wait to get a rescue they put her in a

[01:22:12] litter and I don't know snob I haven't done these were I've never been on a rescue so I don't know

[01:22:18] but they got her down to the trailhead by 715 and I know it's not super far yeah yeah well on but

[01:22:24] that tells me that like they must have been able to like move her pretty quickly on like the

[01:22:29] the litter do they generally like well will they just slide them in the snow in the litter or do

[01:22:33] they actually carry the litter it depends on the situation you know some teams use the skeds which

[01:22:41] are basically like plastic sleds that fold up like a burrito sometimes they use a traditional litter

[01:22:47] with a fiberglass bottom that you can actually pick up nothing you can't pick up the sked that you

[01:22:54] can pick them up as well it depends in certain sections I can imagine carrying rather than dragging

[01:23:03] just because of the steepness or the risk of losing somebody you know just dropping them and having

[01:23:09] a worse incident but yeah it varies depends on the context but I can imagine yeah like a regular

[01:23:18] litter a summertime litter nah it's probably fiberglass or something yeah we did see the litter that's

[01:23:25] cashed at bondcliffe yeah yeah that one goes back to the Roma Roma incident I believe yeah yeah

[01:23:34] still cash there it's just like it's right before the the chimney to climb up to the get

[01:23:39] above tree line so good spot for yeah I remember reading online people were

[01:23:45] advising others not to touch it like people want to drag it out yeah no no we left it

[01:23:52] yeah where it was yeah anyway so now there's a couple of other incidents here with snowmobiles

[01:24:00] here so I only have to say if they're interesting these two are somewhat unusual yeah yeah so this is

[01:24:08] a 54 year old and the hamster native suffered serious injuries this is in horse lake also known as

[01:24:19] wear reservoir in the town of weir so onlookers witnessed the crash

[01:24:29] and after an investigation it appears that this this gentleman was not wearing a helmet at the time

[01:24:35] of the crash speed appears to be the primary contributing factor so two red flags yeah yeah so

[01:24:43] this guy was out being wild wild and woolly I can't I can't even imagine doing that without a helmet

[01:24:50] no way oh I wouldn't even think about it and then oh did you pull this one because of my

[01:24:56] Connecticut comment before the last one no it's it's more of a terrain geographical type of

[01:25:06] interesting feature of this story that's interesting to know I had not thought of it

[01:25:11] yeah remember I was making fun of Connecticut and Rhode Island at the being bad drivers

[01:25:15] yeah well you going back to that it looks like there were a lot of accidents that are rental sleds so

[01:25:21] I don't know what's going on with some of these companies renting to people that may not be

[01:25:25] experienced enough but that's definitely an issue that's got to change yeah yeah so anyway this

[01:25:30] one happened on Wednesday so like two days ago so this is up in Pittsburgh New Hampshire 45 year old

[01:25:37] gentleman from East Haven Connecticut he was involved in a crash with multiple people on first

[01:25:47] Connecticut Lake and Pittsburgh so when rescues got to the scene they identified that

[01:25:54] this gentleman old 45 year old gentleman had his young daughter in the back of the snowmobile

[01:25:58] during the crash however after evaluation by medical personnel was determined she was unhingered

[01:26:05] but the father's injuries were severe enough that a call was placed to Dartmouth Hitchcock

[01:26:09] Adventure Response Team which is the Dart helicopter and they had to transfer them to a major trauma

[01:26:16] center so his work gets interesting yeah so an ambulance transported the victim from first

[01:26:25] Connecticut Lake to the landing zone at dormans gas in Pittsburgh to meet the Dart helicopter where

[01:26:31] he was ultimately transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for serious injuries on scene they

[01:26:38] determined that the rider was riding with a large group of riders on first Connecticut Lake and

[01:26:43] hit a pressure ridge on the ice throwing him and his daughter from the machine multiple other

[01:26:49] machines in the riding party struck the pressure ridge which threw their operators as well

[01:26:55] everyone else involved in the strike were either unhingered or refused medical treatment

[01:27:01] so in the last several days a large pressure ridge formed approximately a half a mile south of

[01:27:07] camp autor road in the northern third of the lake and is a significant hazard but is easily

[01:27:14] negotiated by going out of slow and controlled speed so the crash is still under investigation

[01:27:20] however at this time the incident appears to have been caused by excessive speed and inattention

[01:27:26] to potential hazards so stop what is a pressure ridge on ice well it's really really fascinating I

[01:27:34] mean it's this first I've heard a story like that but it's a ridge that's formed in pack ice by

[01:27:39] accumulation of ice blocks in the convergence between flows so it's where two flows converge you

[01:27:47] have an uplifting of the ice upward so it makes basically a ramp and what's interesting about

[01:27:54] this it goes back to say some of the the old Arctic expeditions back in the 1800s and whatnot they

[01:28:00] if they got stuck in these ice flows the ice would actually just crush the ships

[01:28:07] oh it looks like it's like two plates of ice that just crush into each other and then exactly

[01:28:14] they create like a little a little like um fold that goes up and then maybe they didn't see them

[01:28:22] because they were like covered in snow or something but like usually they're pretty big isn't that

[01:28:26] wild yeah so I mean basically the if they had been going slower it probably would not have been an

[01:28:32] issue but if you're ripping and the other interesting thing about this story they say that there's

[01:28:37] no speed limit on lakes and ponds for the or at least the majority of lakes and ponds I did not

[01:28:43] know that either so people are ripping as fast as I can over these things but that's crazy risk

[01:28:52] yeah yeah it's crazy so anymore snowmobile escapades but stop this is it we've completed episode 141

[01:29:00] this was great we talked about a bunch of rescues we talked about a bunch of hikes we learned

[01:29:06] about pressure ridges I feel much smarter after talking to you oh that's nice and we saved uh

[01:29:12] Eric Hamilton he was uh it was actually a search and rescue he was out freezing in his car trying

[01:29:16] to get a connection with us we said yeah yeah let's do it next week we'll get him next week

[01:29:22] and then we have the script all ready to go too so we don't have to do any extra work hell yeah awesome

[01:30:11] some mega peaks now covered in scratches blisters and bug bites

[01:30:17] christav wanted to complete his most challenging day hike ever

[01:30:21] fishing game officers say the hiker from florida activated an emergency vehicle yesterday morning

[01:30:28] he was hiking along the appellation trail when the weather started to get worse

[01:30:32] officials say the snow was piled up to three feet in some spots and there was a wind shell of

[01:30:37] minus one degree and there was three more and it's right in the race

[01:30:46] Lieutenant James Deeland New Hampshire fishing game those end of things we're being with us today

[01:30:50] thanks to have them we're some of the most common mistakes you see people make when they're

[01:30:55] heading out on the trails to hike your new hamster seems to me the most common as being unprepared

[01:30:59] and i think if they just simply visited hikesafe.com and got a list of the 10 essential items and

[01:31:04] had those in their packs they probably would have no need to ever call us at all
