[00:00:32] Weather observers working at the nonprofit Mount Washington Observatory write this elevation

[00:00:42] Search and rescue teams, have a lunch experts and backcountry guides all rely on the higher
[00:00:47] summits forecast to anticipate weather conditions above treeline.
[00:00:52] You should too.
[00:00:54] Go to MountWashington.org or text forecast to 603-356-2137.
[00:01:10] And here is your forecast for Friday, March 22nd and Saturday, March 23rd.
[00:01:16] We have an alert, a windtrial advisory and effect through 2 p.m. Friday and a winter storm
[00:01:23] watch and effect 12 a.m. Eastern time, Saturday through 5 a.m. Eastern time, Sunday.
[00:01:32] So we have a big storm coming up apparently.
[00:01:34] And let's see, so Friday, mostly in the clear under increasingly cloudy skies with a high
[00:01:40] in the mid single digits, winds will be north west, shifting west at 55-75 mph with gusts
[00:01:48] up to 95 mph early, decreasing the 35-50 mph in the afternoon.
[00:01:55] Windtrial will be 40 below to 50 below rising to 20 below to 30 below.
[00:02:00] Friday night in the clear, trending into the clouds under mostly cloudy skies a slight
[00:02:05] chance of snow showers in the evening becoming likely after midnight and transitioning to
[00:02:10] snow late with possible snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches.
[00:02:15] The low is going to be mid single digits rising to the lower teens with winds south
[00:02:20] west 35-50 mph with gusts up to 75.
[00:02:24] And the winter there will be rising to 10 below to 20 below.
[00:02:28] Now Saturday in the clouds with snow heavier times, possibly mixing with sleet at times
[00:02:34] during the afternoon, possible snow accumulations of 8 to 12 inches with a high rising into
[00:02:42] the lower 20s, winds south west 45-60 mph with gusts up to 75 mph.
[00:02:48] And the windtrial will be 10 to 20 below rising to 5 below to 5 above late.
[00:03:12] Broadcasting from the Woodpecker Studio in the great state of New Hampshire, welcome
[00:03:33] to the sounds like a search and rescue podcast where we discuss all things related to hiking
[00:03:39] and search and rescue in the white mountains of New Hampshire.
[00:06:39] All right, so welcome to episode 144 of the sounds like a search and rescue podcast.
[00:06:45] We're back to normal here after being off for a week to get settled.
[00:06:48] So this week we discussed the journey of completing the winter 4,000 footer list.
[00:06:53] So this was last weekend was like the weekend for a bunch of people to finish the list.
[00:06:58] So we're going to give a little bit of an overview about what it takes to plan and
[00:07:04] finish the winter 4,000 footer list.
[00:07:06] And I'll talk a little bit about sort of the evolution of the gear that I've used
[00:07:09] and my philosophy on how I went about it.
[00:07:13] So hopefully that will be helpful to some other people that are planning it.
[00:07:16] In addition, that we have a white mountain history story about the loss of life during a
[00:07:21] 1928 Dartmouth outing club hike.
[00:07:25] We already talked about Stomps New Studio but we'll probably talk a little bit more about
[00:07:28] that.
[00:07:29] We're going to talk about the revival of the once desolate region of Utah in Arizona
[00:07:33] that has come back to life and is starting to become a hiker's paradise.
[00:07:37] We've got Lodge to Dodge news, we've got notable hikes and we've got recent search and
[00:07:41] rescue news.
[00:07:42] So on Mike and I'm Stomps let's get started shall we?
[00:08:03] Let's get started alright so let's get into the hiking buddy spot.
[00:08:09] Here we go, new tip coming.
[00:08:20] This is Ben Pies from Hiking Buddies.
[00:08:21] We are a 501c3 nonprofit committed to reducing avoidable tragedies through education, impactful
[00:08:27] projects and fostering a community of support.
[00:08:30] You can find out more at hikingbuddies.org.
[00:08:33] We wanted to say thank you to those who have supported our mission and most importantly
[00:08:37] say thanks to those who speak up, who ask questions and who are willing to provide guidance
[00:08:41] and assistance on the trails when needed.
[00:08:43] You embody what it means to be a hiking buddy.
[00:08:46] And now for all my newer hikers out there here's this episode's Hiking Buddies Quick Tip.
[00:08:56] Leave no trace principles number 6 and 7.
[00:09:00] Respect wildlife and be considerate of other visitors.
[00:09:04] This is not the time for a boom box, do not ask invasive questions and please don't leave
[00:09:11] dog poo on the trail.
[00:09:16] Alright so that is the so snop if I remember correctly that's the last one we're
[00:09:29] Lynn our friend Lynn is doing the voice over now we're going to be moving to Andrew Barlow.
[00:09:35] That is right yeah you have a little bit of an accent coming in and some nice music
[00:09:39] in new music.
[00:09:40] Yeah we had a good time recording that by the way he's a riot.
[00:09:45] Oh he's great guy how many different clips did you put together with him?
[00:09:51] Um gee whiz probably 30 plus yeah we were there together for a couple hours and Lynn came
[00:09:57] over as well she was the director and we had a lot of laughs and yeah we've got some
[00:10:03] nice spring time in summer tips coming your way so that should be interesting.
[00:10:09] And yeah awesome yeah it's um it should be mud season but we've got a spring snow storm
[00:10:15] rolling in right?
[00:10:16] Yeah what's up with that huh I just looked at the forecast down here for Thornton and
[00:10:20] they're calling for 15 inches through Saturday.
[00:10:26] It's amazing yeah I mean it's spring but it's still March you know what can you do it's
[00:10:33] still early we've had storms later but that's a good one.
[00:10:38] Yeah I think we're going to get we're going to get like a half an inch or an inch of snow
[00:10:42] and then it's going to turn over to rain on Saturday so all right yeah but we're ready
[00:10:48] to go I'll be flying solo with the kiddies Mrs. Stomp is in South Carolina for the weekend
[00:10:56] with the fam just having a great girls weekend out so I'll just be here braving the storm
[00:11:01] all by my lonesome.
[00:11:03] Yeah I got Mrs. Mike is actually flying out to Florida tomorrow so I'll be on you know
[00:11:07] one thing about our wife's snop that I'll say they like to get away from us is Mrs.
[00:11:12] Stomp and Mrs. Mike they love to travel specifically without us right yeah they like to
[00:11:20] scatter there that's right I don't blame them I mean if I live with me I would escape
[00:11:24] too.
[00:11:25] It's a little suspicious yeah well that's good for her I hope she has a good time here
[00:11:32] snop I've been the individual games so I highly recommend little Harry Potter for you
[00:11:35] oh see that'll work as long as I have power but I am convinced that I will lose power every
[00:11:41] storm of the season I've lost it so I have all the wood stacked up ready to go I've got
[00:11:45] a couple good books I don't know we shall see this area below well sticky is just prone
[00:11:51] to outages it happens all the time yeah you have bad luck serious yeah well good luck
[00:11:58] to you there so very good and then so we got a couple of stories that you pulled here
[00:12:04] stomp thanks I actually grabbed one or two as well so I'll take credit but this first
[00:12:08] one here look only a daily sun ice out complete on March 17th super early so ice out is essentially
[00:12:15] where all the ice is gone from Lake Winnipeh Saki is that correct that's right yeah I've
[00:12:21] been watching that it happens generally a little later but the big question is was there
[00:12:26] ever an ice in meaning was there full ice pack on the the lake I don't know I know they
[00:12:33] had to move the hockey I would a hockey game had to move over away from the lake over to
[00:12:38] walk you on for the hockey classic pond hockey well they didn't do it in all to bay no no they had
[00:12:46] it well I don't even think that's all to bay but down in Meredith I'm not sure what section that is
[00:12:51] but yeah anyway who knows yeah yeah there's no arguing you know whatever you think about climate
[00:13:01] change is there's no arguing that this year was a warmer weather winter than you know we had hoped
[00:13:09] for but then again like you had pulled that story about that like explosion in Tonga that had put
[00:13:15] all of that water vapor into the atmosphere and you know that that that article that we had we
[00:13:22] had talked about in like November December proved to be pretty accurate in my view yeah it's
[00:13:28] complicated it's a complex system it is it's a complex system of moving parts and me and you
[00:13:35] are never going to be smart enough to know what's going on there yeah but earlier we talked about
[00:13:39] James Bond speaking of James Bond Pierce Barosson and we've been covering this story so Pierce I
[00:13:45] always thought he was a cool dude but I guess he's like don't you know who I am type of guy yeah
[00:13:50] apparently so but his coolness caught up with him I guess is too cool yeah yeah yes yeah so he
[00:13:57] was at Yellowstone last November and he decided that he was going to walk into the restricted mammoth hot
[00:14:04] springs area to take a photo and because of that I think he posted it online and somebody busted him
[00:14:15] and he ended up getting like I guess summons to court so he pled guilty he ultimately did the
[00:14:21] right thing so he told the court he felt embarrassed in a shame since the violation was publicized
[00:14:26] everywhere and ultimately the apologetic James Bond actor escaped relatively unscathed so he was
[00:14:35] able to do a zoom hearing which is which is good and he pled out to the Yellowstone Justice Center
[00:14:42] in mammoth he was represented by a lawyer and he agreed to plead guilty to a class B misdemeanor
[00:14:52] and he's got to pay $5,000 fine and then two years of unsupervised probation that's actually a
[00:14:59] pretty hefty fine penalty for somebody to do that that's wild that's a lot of jingah well
[00:15:07] I guess the judge agreed with you Stomp because judge Stephanie Hamburg decided to be more lenient
[00:15:14] with Brosnan and she only sentenced him to pay $1,500 without any probation and she said I'm sure
[00:15:21] you will not be doing this behavior again I'm convinced that you learned your lesson uh see
[00:15:26] Aethermanment there we go that's the proper application of the Aethermanment thank you judge
[00:15:32] so I still find it goofy that somebody that's been the public eye for so many decades would not
[00:15:38] realize that he'd be making a viral video like come on anyway yeah yeah and Brosnan said that
[00:15:48] uh he thought that she was a very good judge I would do that as well because she hooked him up
[00:15:53] and then they were also I guess he was chatting a little bit about um some of the projects so
[00:15:58] he's got three upcoming projects lined up including the adaption of a book called The Thursday Murder
[00:16:05] Club with Helen Marin and Ben Hingsley so yeah I think both Helen Marin and Ben Hingsley are
[00:16:13] knighted or whatever that equivalent is in the UK so it's Dame Helen and then Sir Ben Hingsley so
[00:16:21] wow was he telling the judge that no no I guess he was chatting with his lawyer like before
[00:16:27] the June started and yeah people picked it up it's funny that made it into the story oh brother right
[00:16:33] yeah yeah um yeah so ultimately he had two infractions foot travel in a thermal area in a closure
[00:16:41] violation so I guess they dropped the second charge of a closure violation and just focused on
[00:16:47] the foot travel in a thermal area all right folks be careful out there yep highly embarrassed and ashamed
[00:16:55] yes I'm sure that would be a good section to put the shame drop into someone resurrect the shame drop
[00:17:03] oh yeah he's like mark that mark that time there um all right upcoming events here stop so we've got
[00:17:10] the AMC dinner on April 20th yeah uh me and you again I'm going are you going I am going yes remember
[00:17:17] this this is my anniversary and Mrs. Tomp is a saint for letting me go actually she may be there as
[00:17:21] well meaning the table with us yeah yeah I get I get to send in my applications see if they can
[00:17:28] slide me and I don't know if I missed a deadline or not oh well I think you should pull a
[00:17:33] Paris Brosnan run up on stage yes so it should be it should be a it should be a crowd there so um
[00:17:41] looking forward to that and then are we gonna emerge there should be by some merch or can we sell
[00:17:46] merch there is that not allowed I think we could but we would have to preorder those for this we will
[00:17:52] definitely have all the various stickers that we have in stock and some other stuff from other
[00:18:01] people that we have supported over in the past whether it be fantasy pants and 48 peaks
[00:18:08] and yeah well but we'll be there just to hang out and chat with everybody spread the word okay
[00:18:14] very good and then uh yeah so we'll look forward to seeing all the hikers there and then
[00:18:19] we've got 48 peaks June 8th at reckless so yeah you wanted to mention something stop why don't
[00:18:25] you get the background on this one yeah so June 8th is the celebration at reckless for the 48
[00:18:31] peaks Alzheimer's event and we will be having some representatives from 48 peaks coming on in a
[00:18:39] couple weeks to discuss the event in full detail and I could I got a message from one person his name
[00:18:47] is Adam Galutian I did just want to mention this we'll provide the link he's actually the captain
[00:18:53] four team eastern mountain sports and you just wanted to say hey if you can plug this that'd be great
[00:18:58] if I could come on that'd be better but there's no way we could have all the different teams come on
[00:19:04] so we will have 48 peace come on to represent the whole entire affair but good luck Adam and um
[00:19:12] we wish you guys the best yeah during your fundraiser efforts got it all right and then there's a
[00:19:19] there's a fundraising page right so I will um I'll put Adam's fundraising page in the show notes
[00:19:24] yeah they're on their way they get in there oh yeah absolutely all right all right
[00:19:30] stomps yes lockin one on i mean in fact that was at reckless on sunday saturday and um
[00:19:37] yeah it's good good time so let's talk about that later but um I pulled the story here I thought
[00:19:42] um now actually i didn't pull this friend al sent this over and I thought it was interesting
[00:19:47] al kind of knows my vibe for sure because he everyone's gonna throw like a non hike or sort
[00:19:52] of a peripheral story and he'll be like oh I feel like this would be up your alley and he's
[00:19:56] 100% right about this one so do you remember um back probably 10 12 years ago it was all over
[00:20:02] date line there was a guy by the name Warren Jeff's and he was a um the I guess the the
[00:20:11] flds like the fundamental ladder day saints he was like the head of this sect okay that was in
[00:20:18] there's these two towns there's a town called Colorado city Arizona and then there's a town
[00:20:24] right next to which is hill deal Utah and Warren Jeff's essentially he had the like the
[00:20:31] polygons mismarriages so he had like something like 50 or 60 wives right and these two towns
[00:20:39] were essentially taken over by this flds it's essentially a cult and the guy you know had his inner
[00:20:47] circle and in the men that had that had the power essentially had like a bunch of different wives
[00:20:52] there so eventually like those types of arrangements don't last they don't they don't do the young
[00:20:59] men don't do well because there's only a certain number of men that can have wives because if they
[00:21:04] all have 10 to 12 wives then you gotta start kicking some of the boys out so that's what ended up
[00:21:09] happening is they kicked the other boys out they took over the whole police department I took over
[00:21:14] all the city government functions so like day line NBC would go into this place and literally like
[00:21:20] they would get pulled over immediately by the sheriff who's part of the the flds cult and um
[00:21:27] you know the whole town was just basically taken over by this religious cult so really creepy like a
[00:21:31] sort of a horror movie type of deal um so it's located right on the Arizona Utah line
[00:21:38] right by Zion National Park so maybe I think about an hour away yeah um so this place was
[00:21:43] desolate it was basically like you know women that were like the you know the long dresses and
[00:21:49] they were on their compounds and you know it was a really stern place where you know outsiders
[00:21:54] were never welcome so um fast forward this guy Warren Jeff sends up getting arrested
[00:22:01] um they tried to keep the set going for a while but I think it's mostly falling apart at this point
[00:22:08] so now fast forward over the last five years or so Colorado City Arizona and Hilldale Utah have
[00:22:16] now be they've kind of gone through a renaissance where some of the people that had left the the cult
[00:22:22] one of Warren Jeff's relatives is now the mayor of Hilldale Utah and then they've also essentially
[00:22:28] like cleaned up all the police force and um they've they've sold all the property that belong to
[00:22:35] the cult to private citizens and we'll hold on to what's what people have realized is that like
[00:22:41] this place has all of the sort of features and hiking and everything that you find at Zion
[00:22:47] and like they have like their own version of the narrows you know the narrows in that area
[00:22:52] in the Oaxloc Canyon yeah exactly if you slot canyons and stuff it's like an amazing
[00:22:56] area and they've got like a vineyard out there too now it's built up and some guys have come in
[00:23:02] and actually bought some property and set up like a hostel for hikers and things like that so
[00:23:07] it's had like a renaissance where it went from this like very children of the corn like scary place
[00:23:13] to now it's like hikers paradise yeah that's really interesting so they had no access really
[00:23:18] to get into the area yeah I mean you could go into the town but like if you weren't local or part
[00:23:25] of the FLDS like cult you were essentially like you know the cops would give you a hard time
[00:23:30] like we're interested go in there and try to like interview people and the police would like
[00:23:34] arrest them harass them like you can go on you see these 2020 episodes the place looks
[00:23:39] scariest hell because the police force was completely taken over by this cult leader wow
[00:23:45] she's all kinds of bad stuff going on I mean that obviously like people that have 50 60 wives
[00:23:51] like eventually they start to you know it's such coming out that there's a lot of abuse going
[00:23:55] on with the kids too so it's really scary stuff yeah wow I can't imagine that many wives I mean
[00:24:02] I can't imagine I mean I can't I mean this is Mike as you that's a handful but that's um
[00:24:09] that's an interesting story I thought is that you know from dark days to um becoming a hikers
[00:24:15] paradise so maybe we'll check it out someday yeah I'm sure there are places locally that are in a
[00:24:20] similar dynamic I don't know I'm running about like I said Mrs. Mike and I'm happy with one wife
[00:24:29] well I'm not talking about that I'm talking about the three restrictions like oh you're not
[00:24:32] you're not welcome wake wake yeah I don't really know are there tales like that around here
[00:24:39] not that I've experienced uh but it's never too late who knows yeah maybe you can start your own
[00:24:46] stop yeah move way north way north yes yeah um but anyway I will link the articles in the show notes
[00:24:57] and it's pretty interesting but if you if you ever want to go down a rabbit hole like Warren
[00:25:00] Jeff's in that whole story is just like bizarre um hard stuff mixed up eclipse planning what is your
[00:25:08] what's your plan everyone's apparently I read an article that said 170 000 people are expected to be
[00:25:13] up in that area yeah Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine I have no plans really I learned from Stephen
[00:25:21] reckless that the path of totality is really falling up by Lancaster so I'm not entirely sure if
[00:25:28] I'll be able to see it from where I am because I'll be working that day I'm not planning on
[00:25:32] taking time off oh she's not doing anything special no definitely not I could care less uh I've seen
[00:25:38] them before and that's uh that's an episode itself that story but uh I'll save that uh but yeah um
[00:25:46] Lancaster or bust but we shall see I have heard predictions that it will be rainy and cloudy
[00:25:51] who knows it's too far out it is I don't know some good sources looking at long trends
[00:26:00] but yeah you never know what are you doing think if I want to be overseas so I'm not gonna be
[00:26:07] unfortunately but I'll update the audience on on my adventures soon enough oh wait a minute
[00:26:13] so what's the date again just to refresh my memory April 8th I know it's a Monday yeah yeah it's
[00:26:20] gonna be April 8th and um it should be around I think are somewhere between like one in three o'clock
[00:26:28] so it's like prime time yep interesting and they say this is a blood moon right or not a blood moon
[00:26:36] but it has it's going to have that reddish tint that apparently I guess historically
[00:26:42] biblically speaking is always related to like n times type of stuff
[00:26:47] no don't start to stop that but um yeah so it's gonna go through Burlington Vermont and then
[00:26:54] Berlin is like the very southern tip yeah of the path of totality so anything north of Berlin
[00:27:02] will be in there so I think like Berlin and Graffton notch in that area is like the the southern end of
[00:27:07] it so anything you can do to get up a little farther north I think like I'm pretty sure like I think
[00:27:12] like Mount Abraham and the bigalos in that area there would work wow I just don't know how easy
[00:27:17] it is to get like to get up in that area milling-ocket is another option that's gonna be pretty much
[00:27:22] right in the middle of the path of totality interesting so you think all these people will be more
[00:27:28] north to all these different locations I mean make sense maybe but how are they all gonna move
[00:27:34] up there I mean how are they all gonna those roads just can't accommodate volume at all yeah interesting
[00:27:40] huh yeah we shall see I know the local authorities are preparing for it
[00:27:47] yeah yeah so it should be interesting people need to give us a report because if stomps not
[00:27:53] going to do his job and actually get up there then we're not gonna know what's going
[00:27:56] going on I know I guess I should have taken the day off but oh well I'm sure we'll hear about it
[00:28:04] pretty quick I was excited but my plans changed so anyway maybe we'll have to we'll have to
[00:28:11] let the s Dave shits in the woods to be our on-the-scene reporter oh that'd be great that's a good idea
[00:28:18] you up you up for that Dave capture some man on the street videos um Dave shits in the wood
[00:28:24] maybe we'll get him a uh well maybe we'll throw him a notable for that a notable eclipse
[00:28:32] yeah that might work anyway all right next up here stomp you got lodged to dodge news yeah yeah it's
[00:28:39] been a while since we talked about this I think the last time somebody ran this was what Larsen or
[00:28:44] Steve Mason back in 20 two or three if you look at the fastest known time but the word around town is
[00:28:52] that there is somebody that will be doing this I've been sworn to secrecy at the moment but this
[00:28:59] is going to be a pretty cool uh well the shall I say big deal so um I'll keep you posted but the
[00:29:06] lodge to dodge was a route that I sort of put together it's it's more or less put together based
[00:29:11] upon a hut to hut but there's a tag on either side so you start at the musulac ravine lodge
[00:29:21] and then hit kinsman ridge trail for that 13 miles to loan some lake and then on the eastern side
[00:29:28] once you dump out onto route 16 you actually go into the wildcats and then back down to pink
[00:29:34] him notch jodaj lodge and finish so it's 70.86 miles 27,000 feet of plus feet of vertical gain
[00:29:44] and so far the fastest known time is Larsen oh jala a boy Larsen and uh Steve Mason never posted his
[00:29:52] time Steve did it backwards he did a dodge to lodge starting at jodaj lodge and then dumping out
[00:29:58] at ravine lodge and there's different things you could do you could do it supported unsupported
[00:30:04] you could throw in the peaks along the way or not there's no real specific rules to that
[00:30:09] but there it is so fastest known time if you look it up it's it's the word lodge the number two
[00:30:15] and then dodge and you can check it out okay yeah and then there's a couple of I just had a couple
[00:30:21] of questions about the route so yeah when you when you cut across from the tricky parts I guess
[00:30:29] would be so you come down loan some lake you stay on the Appalachian trail and then
[00:30:34] you essentially just go up you go through Lafayette Place campground and then you go
[00:30:43] up old bridal is that right correct up to really no not really green leaf hut green leaf
[00:30:52] that's right right okay so that's a little bit of a cutoff then it shows here that um
[00:30:57] it shows on the route that you tag galehead mountain well again that's you are you hitting the
[00:31:02] summits or you don't have to well like I said it that's I never really made that some hard fast rule
[00:31:09] it's the same with the hut to hut you don't have to hit the summits the goal without was just to hit
[00:31:13] the huts but um I know that Larsen may not have hit all the summits but Steve may have hit
[00:31:19] the summits along his attempt so it's your call I think the the biggest part of it is just to complete
[00:31:27] 70 damn miles from beginning to end and start or finish at these historic locations you know
[00:31:34] it's ravine lodge or Joe Dodge lodge so yeah any other questions it looks like so the other thing is
[00:31:42] just to clarify so you come out of like the zealon area you come you connect with Mount Avalon trail
[00:31:49] yep and then come down Mount Willard and then connect to the Crawford path from there yeah and then
[00:31:57] the connection over the present yeah and then when you get to
[00:32:04] the end of the presies you're gonna exit out the great gulf and then you're gonna do a little bit
[00:32:09] of a road walk that's about the only road walk you have yeah to 19 miles to get to 19 mile and then
[00:32:15] from 19 mile do you oh then you come down yeah you can't reach wall cats down to the lost pond trail
[00:32:26] which is the AT correct I think that's the AT correct so you're not walking route 16 back so
[00:32:32] you take the lost pond back to pink them correct hardcore man just when you're like just when
[00:32:39] you think you're done you hit 19 mile and you have to hit the wild cats and turn it on because
[00:32:45] it is no joke at the end it's hardcore and I think so like one of the things that you need to do though
[00:32:52] is like I feel like people shouldn't feel the pressure to do like Larsen and Steve did like you
[00:32:57] don't need to do this in one day like if you want to do this as your you know four five you
[00:33:02] know you have a week off and you want to do this as a four five day hike that's you can easily do
[00:33:07] that yeah enjoy yourself I would love to see that you know break it up segment it whatever
[00:33:13] yeah it's such a cool thing I'm glad that it's sticking and I'm really excited about this next
[00:33:18] adventure so we'll keep you posted awesome all right next up here stop we've got national park
[00:33:24] service sued over cashless policies yeah so pretty interesting story yeah yeah you see this more
[00:33:31] and more like I see this with like parking places and it's pretty common now so national park
[00:33:37] services increasing their move to accept only credit cards for entrance parks and three visitors
[00:33:43] of suit the agency I love this stuff I have busy bodies that are suing people because
[00:33:48] I'm too lazy to do this stuff so it's sticking to the man right so they're saying the policy is
[00:33:54] unreasonable and an abuse of discretion and that federal law states that legal tender is suitable
[00:34:00] for all public charges so right at Esther van der Worf of O. J. California Toby Stover of High Falls
[00:34:09] New York in Elizabeth Dazgern of Darry and how did these three people find each other so they brought
[00:34:17] a lot earlier this month yeah yeah interesting point who knows yeah New York to it is so I guess
[00:34:25] the thing is about the internet stop is that every village's idiot can find each other now true
[00:34:32] maybe there was a because of the internet right a group of people like national park site or
[00:34:37] whatever yeah every busy body yeah can can find each other but anyway so they have brought a
[00:34:46] lawsuit earlier this month basically saying that US currency would not be accepted for entry into
[00:34:55] a bunch of different national parks here so they're saying the national park services violating
[00:34:59] federal law and they cannot be overlooked in favor of any purported benefit the NPS
[00:35:09] cashless system could hope to achieve such as reducing logistics of handling cash collected
[00:35:15] moreover there is an increased cost to the national park service and going cashless
[00:35:20] such as additional processing fees that would be borne by the national park service and by
[00:35:24] visitors who ultimately fund the federal government through taxes so yeah they want somebody that
[00:35:30] can give them change sit in there which yeah bucket of pennies I like it I always like talking to
[00:35:36] that person like okay which which way do I go right left what's the best thing to see like I feel
[00:35:40] like they need that person yeah yeah well I mean my prediction on this one is that these people
[00:35:46] will win actually based upon what happened with the the OSHA thing because the scotuses starting to
[00:35:52] pull back on these agencies because to change this scheme it needs Congress the agency just can't
[00:35:58] randomly just change these things so I don't know we'll see what happens but it's an interesting story
[00:36:03] I mean it's a literally like a $10 damage yeah but I also think like these you know you have these
[00:36:13] vending machines that can take money you know they can tell a five from a 10 from a 20 yeah sure
[00:36:19] give change so and that would get rid of the employees that'll save them some money yeah exactly
[00:36:24] but I mean like you go to casino believe me they have those machines that take cash so
[00:36:30] that's really funny I just want digging on this too this is another interesting one
[00:36:34] I a couple stats from different sites but the average I think was 25% of the nation
[00:36:42] do not have access to bank cards or their bank poor whatever the you know they just aren't
[00:36:49] able to do a card so that in itself would be a violation of say equal protection or whatnot so
[00:36:56] yeah it's gonna be really interesting to see what happens um so that would be almost discriminatory
[00:37:02] to 25% of the population that's in poverty so this if 25% if it take yeah it'll take some really
[00:37:10] savvy lawyers but I'm really looking forward to the follow up on this story that's like in order
[00:37:16] reminds me of is yeah every once in a while you'll see the story of like um it's always like you know
[00:37:21] there's always like one or two people in a town that are they got an axe to grind they're very busy
[00:37:27] a lot of times they'll you know they're writing letters to the editor and doing all that stuff but
[00:37:31] like everyone's want you'll hear a story about a guy that gets mad about like his tax bill and
[00:37:36] he'll show up at the like the thing with like a bucket pennies a wheelbarrow full of pennies
[00:37:42] oh yeah he's like I'm gonna pay my you know my excise tax and then they'll say well we're not
[00:37:46] gonna accept it I think I don't know what the legal rulings are but I love those guys oh it's a
[00:37:51] riot or the people that show up in the post office with um you know they want that particular stamp
[00:37:56] that costs maybe a penny or two so they have to pay them yeah yeah I mean I would never do that
[00:38:01] but I definitely get a muse watching this people so I don't I feel bad for the worker but anyway
[00:38:07] yeah well stop you keep us updated I will all right I got a couple of listener questions here
[00:38:14] stop so um the Facebook account like don't email me over Facebook because nobody nobody is
[00:38:21] monitoring the cute people I apologize um our sounds like a search and rescue Facebook thing like
[00:38:28] I have that set automatically to do our advertisers but I I miss I don't know just I hear you
[00:38:35] Instagrammer send it to slasher dude don't send it my way either I'm missing messages too I get
[00:38:40] these messages like for some reason Instagram divides the message box into three or four different
[00:38:45] categories and I miss these hidden ones that come in and people I apologize but they were
[00:38:50] some that I just miss like it's crazy yeah there's some like dirty emails too that you get in
[00:38:57] their stomping you see those what's going on with it yeah I was like I was like I need to go go
[00:39:03] go to confession have to look at your your email queue yeah that's unfortunate
[00:39:09] so anyway um but anyway so here's a listener question and I apologize to Keith and Mike because I'm
[00:39:15] not I'm dropping the ball which I've been known to do can you so Keith asked can you guys give
[00:39:20] your opinion about the air flare app and whether it's useful in SAR or not so the air flare app
[00:39:27] is an app that um it's it purports I'm gonna pull this up right now here stop it's called air flare
[00:39:35] and it purports to be able to convert your phone into a rescue device and I'm skeptical I
[00:39:47] haven't downloaded this because it's like a subscription but essentially you install this app on
[00:39:51] your phone you pay for the subscription and you set up and then in an emergency rescue is
[00:39:57] can find you faster so what it claims is that it will teach you how to optimize your law your
[00:40:03] battery life so that it lasts longer um and then it provides like multiple mechanisms to help locate a
[00:40:12] lost adventure or via their mobile phone on grid features like location caching location return can
[00:40:18] identify lost adventures GPS coordinates before a ground team is even deployed and then they've
[00:40:24] got this off grid feature called air flare user detection and location capture alert um
[00:40:31] what so they're claiming that essentially like they can I think effectively track you even in cases
[00:40:38] where you're not in a cell phone connect a region so I think I mean look at anything's worth
[00:40:44] trying personally if I'm gonna spend money on a subscription service I'm weary about the idea
[00:40:49] that like my I can optimize the battery on my phone especially I'm really really cold weather
[00:40:54] I would be very skeptical about like my long lasting battery life in cold weather um I'd rather
[00:41:00] spend the money on a dedicated device right a device right now yeah yeah that's my opinion what's
[00:41:05] the cost of this app so it's an app that taps into your phones GPS I think so yeah probably
[00:41:13] would need a iPhone or both either yeah you need an iPhone or an Android and it's it's 499 a year
[00:41:22] so I don't know if that's like the base price so maybe it's worth it to try it but I think from
[00:41:27] my for my own piece of mind like I don't know if the the GPS location coordinates if there's no
[00:41:34] cell connection then I don't see how you I mean maybe it has a way that it sort of gives you a
[00:41:38] tutorial on how to use like the embedded features inside the iPhone to do an emergency if you're
[00:41:46] if you're odd arranged but I don't know I think I would rather go with a dedicated
[00:41:52] device oh yeah I would too but um the other thing that we talked about a few months back was the
[00:41:58] Motorola defi which costs 150 bucks I have them like a trial model here so it's a separate device
[00:42:07] it's like the size of a beeper that yeah basically turns your phone into a GPS communicator
[00:42:15] um with a much lower cost basis to get up and running I think
[00:42:22] um and it's hardened it's it's definitely much it's not an app it's a second piece of equipment but
[00:42:28] it looks like it's pretty good and Motorola's been around for decades doing these things so
[00:42:34] I mean that might be an option as opposed to an app I don't like that idea yeah I just I don't
[00:42:40] like the idea of relying on your phone um you know maybe we'll we'll be we'll see a future where
[00:42:46] I do think like eventually like the starlink technology is going to be made available and
[00:42:50] that you it will be viable to use your phone to connect to a satellite internet connection in
[00:42:55] the case of emergency and I don't know how that'll look for um starlink but I think that that's
[00:43:01] the way to go and I think we're probably only a couple of years away from that yeah um next
[00:43:07] up stomp uh I guess I'll get your opinion on this so this question comes from listener Mike
[00:43:12] I have a question for you maybe you can help me I volunteer with a New York based search and rescue
[00:43:16] team in the cat skills and I'm looking for a good durable pair of warm gloves I was shopping for
[00:43:21] real leather that I can use during rope trails carryouts climbing etc most of the gloves that I've
[00:43:26] looked at have a lot of mixed reviews so I think with gloves I think that you know that's it's one
[00:43:33] of those purchases I would not overthink you know probably try out a bunch of different gloves my
[00:43:39] opinion based on what he's saying stomp and you can you can tell me if you're wrong but I like I always
[00:43:45] have a pair of work gloves with me so Jeff Rogers tip me off on this and basically those work gloves
[00:43:49] that are like the yellow leather type of gloves that have the warm insulation so I have a pair of
[00:43:54] Eddie Bauer that I use and then I also have a pair of outdoor research ones that um yeah
[00:44:00] that I use I think they're like the ass Axel work gloves or something like that so both of them
[00:44:06] are super warm but any kind of work glove I think works for me but you I mean I'm not searching
[00:44:11] rescue so maybe you have a different opinion I can talk you know based upon what I see other people
[00:44:17] doing I'm sort of an anomaly go figure but a lot of people will bring multiple pairs of gloves
[00:44:24] first of all just the hike in you have a liner pair um when you get to where your destination is
[00:44:29] you have a warmer pair whether it be gloves or mittens probably gloves some people do wear
[00:44:35] liners like a micro please liner with a leather glove um I mean it's really personal preference
[00:44:43] I generally run hot so I'm typically I'm I'm bare handed even in winter carrying somebody out
[00:44:50] so it's really personal preference if you're doing rope work and things that that you're probably
[00:44:54] gonna want to stick with some leather or at least a leather reinforced uh synthetic type of combination
[00:45:01] um so maybe that's helpful yeah yeah and I mean my I basically I think right now I'm doing like
[00:45:09] five pairs of gloves so I'll do the liner gloves then I have a pair of like wool uh mittens
[00:45:16] that flip over and then I've got my heavier outdoor research shell mitts so that's my like
[00:45:23] that's the heavy duty system but then I also carry usually like two extra pairs of gloves one of
[00:45:29] which is those work gloves that I have and then I recently bought this this winter I bought like
[00:45:37] a pair of wool mitts that are super warm yep so I mean it's maybe it's a little bit heavy but I
[00:45:44] don't think you can go wrong because sometimes like I've had to you know have my
[00:45:50] daughter use like an extra pair of gloves or something like that too so knowing I have those
[00:45:54] it's peace of mind for me okay you know I'm obsessed with the new combo which I put together this season
[00:46:01] uh minus 33 micro fleece liners covered by a ten dollar pair of the Walt uh plastic dipped winter
[00:46:13] work gloves the two of those together so to met so that durability need as well as warmth
[00:46:19] and the whole thing costs maybe 20 bucks to put together yeah yeah you don't have to go too crazy
[00:46:25] with gloves I mean really I mean when it gets below like say 10 degrees or something like that then
[00:46:31] yeah you definitely have to be aware of it but ultimately if it's if it's above 10 degrees essentially
[00:46:36] your your movement is gonna keep you well although search and rescue that is a problem sometimes
[00:46:41] because you're standing still for long periods of time so yeah um but yeah no no easy answer
[00:46:48] there Mike but hopefully we gave you some ideas yeah and thank you for your service Mike
[00:46:55] yes thank you for your service stomp and this is the part of the show where I pick out a dad joke
[00:47:01] oh my god
[00:47:03] we all know that hiking a mountain can be hard at times so here's a corny dad joke to help you
[00:47:10] get over it but I'm bum why is history a sweet subject
[00:47:21] I give up because it has a lot of dates
[00:47:26] get it history is a sweet subject because it has a lot of dates like dates the fruit
[00:47:32] the sweet fruit get it oh man that's a rare event and Camilla for my 365 days of dad jokes
[00:47:40] I'm still not tracking the ones that I've done so hopefully I won't repeat it interesting
[00:47:45] 200 episodes from now I'll probably let you know I never forget a dad joke okay I appreciate it
[00:48:02] hey what's that sound it must be time for the pop culture segment with Mike and stop
[00:48:10] um moving on to pop culture stuff here stomp so there's a new house of dragons trail that drop
[00:48:19] today uh yes today being Thursday the day before the release but uh yeah it's out today so
[00:48:24] it's coming out in June I guess I can't wait it should be great it's been a long uh wait
[00:48:29] that's good and then um the other thing that I'm keeping an eye on right now is the NCAA
[00:48:35] March madness tournament I've my phone's been buzzing off the hook because my my dad bodge chat
[00:48:42] group is all talking about our upsets and our our brackets oh boy yeah see it's another thing
[00:48:49] I don't get into it's like yeah yeah yeah anything dude culture stomp is not involved in
[00:48:57] that's right so what else is going on out there in pop culture land
[00:49:03] so stomp breaking new stomp oh um went back onto the fantasy pants um podcast so what's
[00:49:14] the update there when is that show going to drop uh I think it actually came out early last week
[00:49:20] believe it or not they did a quick turn on it was like a spur episode so I always love hanging out
[00:49:24] with those guys um and uh I got to do my same old spell that I always do over and over again
[00:49:31] and defeated some giant spider creature with uh some ombre hair dude on top so it's pretty
[00:49:37] interesting but the reason I mentioned it is because they've had a hell of a year the fantasy pants
[00:49:43] crew and I just want to uh say kill your killing it guys and uh best of luck with everything coming up
[00:49:49] and they have a live show coming up that they've been invited to and it's at Burke Mountain ski resort

[00:50:36] interested in this type of thing at fantasy pants they're definitely worth checking out

[00:53:36] uh this is the part of the show where we talk about the beard that we're drinking
[00:53:41] uh what do what you cook in there i got a clouded judgment which is new in ipa from reckless brewing
[00:53:51] oh nice yeah i picked up a couple of four packs on the way out the door after eating

[00:54:16] it's really tasty wow so yeah reckless is killing it with the bruise that wasn't another thing
[00:54:21] like before the um the fantasy pants episode there we were at reckless hanging out for a bed and
[00:54:27] they took me in the back room and showed me all the the you know the big tanks and everything else
[00:54:32] in the process it's it's quite the operation reckless is killing it yeah and matter of fact that
[00:54:39] i uh well i'll talk about it now i we were able to go to the front how i usually go to the pinehouse
[00:54:43] so i hadn't been into the restaurant area before and the food is fantastic and the vibe is fantastic
[00:54:50] and yeah it was great yeah that's good stuff yeah definitely a five star place
[00:54:56] mm-hmm all right and then next up we are gonna talk about recent hikes here stomps so you've
[00:55:06] gone anywhere do you even hike anymore i'm trying oh you know it's like a snowman building is done
[00:55:13] i have to be honest i'm sort of dealing with this neat condition on my right knee
[00:55:17] and it's called it's something i've had all my life and it's called osgood shlatters
[00:55:23] you could look it up and um basically it's an inflammation of the the upper part of the tibia
[00:55:29] where the patelli tendon connects so if i do too much say running i can not so much but at the moment
[00:55:36] it's flared up so i have to sort of pull back on everything um and this is generally contributed to
[00:55:42] tightness of say the quadriceps muscles and the hip flexors so i'm taking a little easy
[00:55:48] like today it's killing me and with pt sometimes i have to bend down and get low with certain
[00:55:53] uh patients so it's just been rough last few weeks it's tough to get old stone hopefully soon
[00:55:58] yeah hopefully soon um beyond that i i was out you know helping out with that search
[00:56:05] down south southern to hampshire so i got out a little bit and that was interesting
[00:56:09] it was uh barn stead is an interesting area it's sort of low rolling hills but
[00:56:15] the uh the boggy terrain is hardcore so man yeah it was pretty interesting so
[00:56:23] i bet yeah i bet so um yeah very good so yeah you kind of your weekend was kind of taken up for that
[00:56:30] i can't it's hard to give you a hard time for not showing up for my winter finish because you're
[00:56:35] doing doing good work there but yeah we went out and we got we had a crew of seven of us so shout
[00:56:41] out to jakester and peter and nick and steve and nabi and tom and yeah everyone was good peters
[00:56:53] it was fun so we had a um a good day i think we ended up parking at the seven dwarfs
[00:57:01] motel and um you know it was funny i pull up in the uh some of the guys so uh steve jake nick and peter
[00:57:11] had like uh shirts so they had like the slasher and then like i'm with mike shirt so it's kind of fun so
[00:57:18] um that's really good cool yeah i was kind of i was like it's too much but it's okay i
[00:57:23] appreciated them doing that so um you know easy hike it sends up being like it was like 10 miles
[00:57:30] around trip but i mean talk about like just a steady steady i mean it's like garfield but even more
[00:57:38] um consistently just like a slight uphill the whole way yeah including the road
[00:57:45] the roads easy yeah the road simple and then you know you go along the the river and then you know
[00:57:51] you're about 1600 feet i think below the summit and it's just a steady climb i think it's maybe
[00:57:57] like a steady two mile climb up the firewood in stril and um yeah it was good i met a couple listeners
[00:58:04] shout out to mike he said that he's he his dog was there um nabi brought his dog so they were playing
[00:58:10] a little bit and um he had said he'd been listening since the beginning and then shout out to roe
[00:58:17] oh here and her friend they said hi they've they're listeners so uh it was cool to meet everybody
[00:58:22] and it was a good crowd and you know i was like yeah it's an accomplishment but i'm moving on
[00:58:27] to the next thing let's go do the bell naps or what's next so it's good it was going to ask you
[00:58:33] so what is up next for the warmer weather anything in particular yeah i think i'm going to shift down to
[00:58:38] the the bell naps and you know i'm looking forward to doing a bunch of things we'll talk about that
[00:58:44] i think in the next segment okay sounds good yep excellent just good times um one warning to
[00:58:51] everybody just to heads up me and nabi kind of found out the long his dog's perfect it has total
[00:58:55] perfect recall and all that stuff but the um the crew at seven dwarfs and i get it like they you know
[00:59:01] they don't know one dog from the other but they do ask that you lease your dogs when you're
[00:59:07] in the park and lot there so just be aware of that you know it's nice enough for them to um
[00:59:12] you know offer up the the parking option saves a little bit of time so just just a heads up yeah
[00:59:18] i know it was cold but did you have any backs wet
[00:59:22] i did not i had my valve clues and um yeah matter of fact i asked the the crew to take a look at my back
[00:59:30] when i was up there and yeah there's no no backs wet in fact i could feel my back was a little cold
[00:59:35] because the wind was going and i knew it was working that way so but yeah worked out perfect nice
[00:59:40] we're gonna have um brison from valve clues uh i figured exactly when but a couple weeks up ahead

[01:02:37] actually really nice well going up its toss but yeah down i mean you just sled down there i guess
[01:02:44] yeah sure uh seger tj or seger seger tj sunrise hike minorow washington and japherson

[01:03:07] that you can get to from the elbow pond location really nice bushwax
[01:03:15] carry hikes a lot heik minorow washington japherson atoms for 41 out of n 40 to 44 for her first

[01:03:48] mount washington damn this is going to be a tough one this week my gushshape and up tough yeah
[01:03:53] davshits in the woods in lisfay did no overnight at north kyrisage fire tower and they've also done
[01:03:59] a ton of other things but could not fit them all in this week cindy chas did mount hey you'll
[01:04:06] recognize these mount clem mount mack and inna for seven out of twelve for the bell nap range how cool
[01:04:14] is that i love that area yeah i like that too oh it's so nice that friggin hiker sages ravine and
[01:04:22] beer mountain on the at i'm not too familiar with the location of these let's see davshits is
[01:04:30] mentioned here again with liz forbs mountain tinkham hill hutchens hill in danberry
[01:04:35] lora elai first this is neat first sunrise of spring on lantern hill with the west really
[01:04:42] morris dancers so any you know it reminded me of any summer day up on mount manadknock with
[01:04:48] there's five thousand people up on top yeah the picture she posted had a bunch of people from
[01:04:54] this dance troop so that was super cool yeah and our buddy andy from the cog railroad boreale badass
[01:05:04] i've got that name right did you hear the story in the background mic i mixed up his name
[01:05:10] i was trying to dissect his instagram handle which is boreale badass but what he does is he puts
[01:05:16] an exit the beginning and exit the end and i translated it as x box real badass you remember that okay
[01:05:25] yeah he gave me some ship for it but so he did high cannon finished well it was his last hike
[01:05:33] for winter with a stop at lonesome lake and then finally dan vdv did cannon and the kinsmans so nice
[01:05:43] work everybody get out there crushing peaks yeah and stop as you were talking i was just looking
[01:05:48] up siege is ravine in beer mountain so that looks like it's on the appellation trail like kinetic
[01:05:53] ed massachusetts area okay all right so nice work very good what do you think what do you think
[01:06:01] all we think oh man i think we might have a a tie here maybe is that what you're thinking
[01:06:09] yeah so i was thinking to sandstorm and carry hikes a lot i think
[01:06:18] get it this week yeah yeah no doubt yeah great minds think alike huh that's true that is true
[01:06:26] stop let's dive into some white mountains history shall we
[01:06:40] all right so you want to talk a little bit of history let's do it it's been a little bit for
[01:06:44] history yeah yeah i got a couple more segments i'm gonna run the next couple of weeks but this
[01:06:49] one is a shorter one but i thought this one peaked my interest because when i was i can up
[01:06:56] am an ucic ravine i've seen this plaque before and i kind of forgot about it but i took a picture
[01:07:02] this time so i had it in my photo so i was able to look it up so when you hike on the am an ucic
[01:07:07] am an ucic ravine trail heading up towards lakes to the clouds hot in mott washington there is a plaque
[01:07:16] in memory of a gentleman by the name of herbid jutson young so all the newspaper articles reference him
[01:07:23] as jutson young so that's all i'm gonna reference him so jutson uh so the plaque that is on
[01:07:32] am an ucic it's on it's on a rock and the plaque essentially commemorates his death so he had passed
[01:07:43] away i think on december 1st 1928 and there's a plaque there that essentially just um you know memorialized
[01:07:54] this his life and it indicates that he died on near this spot um well hiking mott washington so
[01:08:03] he was an 18-year-old freshman so this goes back to 1928 so the Dartmouth Outing Club
[01:08:09] i believe the Dartmouth Outing Club started in like 1909 stop and then they obviously they're well
[01:08:17] known for all the trail work that they did in and around like mousalak in that area they are the
[01:08:24] orange signs or iconic but they also got out to some of the you know the larger summits and
[01:08:29] did outings i think by like 1920 the Sherman Adams building which is named after i think a former
[01:08:38] governor of nehamshire Sherman Adams when he was a young man went to Dartmouth and i think he was
[01:08:43] like the president of the Dartmouth Outing Club at that point in time the outing club had like
[01:08:49] something like 93% of the population of Dartmouth was a member members of the outing club
[01:08:55] and being on like the board of the outing club was considered the most prestigious thing that
[01:09:01] you could do with Dartmouth at the time so everybody was involved in this so um jutson young again he
[01:09:08] was an 18-year-old freshman he lived he grew up in Missouri and i'm assuming that because he lived
[01:09:17] far away over Thanksgiving break instead of going home um he joined five other members of the
[01:09:24] Dartmouth Outing Club you know maybe one or two other freshmen and then some opera classmen
[01:09:30] over the Thanksgiving weekend for a climb up Mount Washington via tachum and ravine they had a plan
[01:09:37] to send the mountain and then stay overnight at lakes of the cloud hot unfortunately the party ran
[01:09:44] into a blizzard and they failed to locate the hut and eventually found their way below treeline
[01:09:51] jutson young started suffering from severe cold presumably um he had you know little cold weather
[01:09:58] hiking experience considering you know he was a new to New England grew up in Missouri and you
[01:10:04] know the assumption is that he relied on some of the older members of the climb for guidance
[01:10:11] unfortunately his condition as they made it below treeline continued to get worse through the night
[01:10:17] eventually three of the hikers decided to bolt for what at the time was um the base station for
[01:10:25] Boston and main railroad we now know it as the real way we now know it as the cog railway
[01:10:30] and then two members of the party stayed with young well it a remaining party uh basically their
[01:10:35] goal was to go back and get it to bargain so that they could help bring young to the base station so
[01:10:41] they did accomplish that they got down to the base station went back up to uh to rescue young got
[01:10:48] him set up in a sled but unfortunately he succumbed to exposure and died on route to the cog railway so
[01:10:57] the article in the Dartmouth paper that covers young's death indicated that the outing leader
[01:11:04] um had made all the right choices given the situation in that um you know unfortunately
[01:11:09] you know even with the heroic efforts of the members of the party to to rescue him you know
[01:11:15] the the story just didn't end well for for juts and young so eighteen years old
[01:11:22] yeah well yeah young too young yeah yeah similar time around like yeah a long time ago
[01:11:28] similar theme around this uh that you know late november period is so dicey where you know
[01:11:35] you can get all kinds of crazy weather and i don't think people are always expecting it so
[01:11:41] clearly they ran into a buzzsaw of weather and it didn't turn out well yeah yeah and that
[01:11:46] that reminds me this forecast is pretty gnarly for Saturday speaking at buzz saws um be really careful
[01:11:53] if you're if you're going out and to those higher summits especially around the presies
[01:11:59] yeah not advisable yeah it's not a weekend to uh to go too crazy but um good stuff yeah so I just
[01:12:07] thought it was an interesting story and you know to think a eighteen-year-old kid going out there
[01:12:12] and you know probably not having a lot of background in what the mountains were like you know he
[01:12:17] probably had hike mousselaki maybe a couple times when he was in Dartmouth but I imagine he probably
[01:12:22] didn't have a lot of experience coming from Missouri um true wonder what he was wearing
[01:12:29] I'm assuming probably that might have been an issue as he got wet didn't have the gear I don't
[01:12:33] know what gear they wore in 1928 but yeah we should find out we should talk about that sometime
[01:12:39] yeah I'll do some research on that I know it was a lot of heavy wool like the
[01:12:43] the real mountaineers back then had the wall and probably overkill for weight and whatnot but
[01:12:49] they were ready yeah yeah yeah all right good
[01:12:55] so
[01:13:00] slasher's hiking topic of the week
[01:13:08] so um all right stop so moving on to the main segment of the the week and I think we've talked a
[01:13:14] little bit about this I don't know how long this will be but the winter 4,000 footer less so
[01:13:20] um I think we wanted to just cover this for anybody that was thinking about doing it um
[01:13:26] and I can talk a little bit about the statistics around this but just to give people background I
[01:13:30] think you know my story's probably similar to a lot of people where I focused on them the 4,000
[01:13:36] footer list um I did do some winter hiking I wasn't crazy I wasn't doing crazy numbers of winter
[01:13:42] hikes but I did do some stuff over the course of my normal 4,000 footer list finish so I think at
[01:13:51] the end of the day between 2015 and 2019 I had about 15 or so 4,000 footers mixed in there I think
[01:13:59] one of my first 4,000 footers stomp was like that that tripped at me you and Jimmy Chagatuk on
[01:14:05] Mount Isolation that might have been like my second second one I think okay so I mean I wasn't
[01:14:12] focused on it at that point but I think essentially like looking at the numbers I had like I said
[01:14:18] about 15 summits just through normal hiking with friends over the course of those five years and then
[01:14:26] I think 2020 and 2021 I started you know consciously saying like all right I'm gonna start picking
[01:14:32] off summits and I did four hikes over the course of 2020 2023 went a 2021 winter
[01:14:42] and then four hikes 2021 to 2022 and at that point I think I was getting close to halfway and
[01:14:51] then for the last I guess two winters I did nine hikes last winter and then eight hikes
[01:14:58] this winter to finish up so you know I think it's pretty realistic like if you do an
[01:15:04] occasionally like a five year plan knocking off like factoring and like maybe hiking every other
[01:15:12] weekend in the winter I think you can knock off the winter 4,000 footer list doing that
[01:15:19] I agree yeah I mean it all depends on your work situation your schedule
[01:15:24] I mean for yeah you could do it at night
[01:15:27] you can do whatever you want I mean you know people do do this single season I think a single
[01:15:32] season essentially my view on this is you probably need to do maybe about 26 27 total hikes so
[01:15:41] yeah you're talking two hikes a week probably to do a single season maybe I think we did a deep dive
[01:15:48] on this with Mike Macyl he has better numbers than I do but I think you probably gotta do like
[01:15:54] you know you really gotta link them together or just do two hikes a week for most of the winter
[01:16:02] yep or if you're in that other category you can do a daratisma in like three days
[01:16:10] yeah yeah you can do whatever you want those people exist
[01:16:14] yeah and stop I would say the toughest hikes just on paper for me was the zealon bonds traverse
[01:16:21] that's a long day no matter how you cut it twins and gale head that's gonna be a long day
[01:16:26] no matter how you cut it and I don't think you want to break those up you just gotta suck it
[01:16:30] up and do those oh no why do you say that twins and gale head from from what approach
[01:16:35] like um so we car spotted so I think the best way to do it is grab north twin self twin and
[01:16:41] and gale head and then you park park one car at like um beaver brook parking spot on by twin mountain
[01:16:50] and then the other one addict seven dwarfs okay how many miles I was about 14 or so okay
[01:17:00] I found the carters to be difficult the middle and south carter hike that's always difficult
[01:17:04] then if you get a throw a carter dome in there uh that's that's a tough one
[01:17:10] oh hold on I have questions so you came up what what approach for the carters
[01:17:16] you're coming up so I knocked off the carters from I parked it 19 mile and then I did a little bit
[01:17:24] of a road walk down to that like um camp that campsite there yeah the campground and then I cut in
[01:17:30] from the campground up the imp trail okay hit um um south carter and then middle carter right um
[01:17:40] and then down nine you know in deseeda pass and then down 19 mile got you I found that to be like
[01:17:45] just a long annoying hike you breaking trail or was it broken I found those for you to be
[01:17:52] somewhat enjoyable yeah I don't know for some I mean I was with Steve from the cape so um
[01:17:59] and I don't know if we were breaking trail on that one or not I just felt like it was a long day yeah
[01:18:04] so um and then you know a couple of other ones like carigan you've got the road walk
[01:18:11] so it adds a lot of extra miles Garfield you've got a road walk so it's not hard but it adds extra
[01:18:17] mileage I will say you've got a road was that as long I think east east east ossea ola don't sleep on
[01:18:26] that one that one super hard in winter yeah um try pyramids is another one that's you know no
[01:18:33] matter which direction you go that's gonna be a long day I did that this this winter I found that
[01:18:40] to be pretty enjoyable but you're right it's just that long road walk that you just have to
[01:18:46] be mentally geared for and ready to accept and just enjoy it focus on the pleasantries of your
[01:18:52] surroundings and whatever else yeah yeah not a lot of views there yeah way low effort hikes
[01:18:59] for me I get Jackson pierced to come so Cabot and Canon those are pretty casual yeah
[01:19:09] most memorable I had a couple of overnight trips I think the Randolph Mountain cabins anytime
[01:19:15] you do that that's that's gonna be a great time you can tag Madison Adams Jefferson I got
[01:19:21] I got all three of those from the cabins uh Mount Carrigane was an interesting hike for me we did
[01:19:27] an overnight that was where um one of our one of our colleagues on the hike experience hypothermia
[01:19:34] I've told that story before sure um and then overnighting on Lonesome Lake I think that setting
[01:19:42] up tents by Lonesome Lake is not a good idea because now that I understand how cold cold air drops
[01:19:49] into a bowl like I realized that like it was 10 degrees colder than it was forecasted so Lonesome
[01:19:55] Lake is not a good area to tent okay I would say other memorable things for me like the views on
[01:20:04] the presidential I got so many good undercasts on the various hikes on the presidential I would say
[01:20:12] that super incredibly cold Liberty Flume hike that we went on stomp was incredible yeah uh risky but
[01:20:19] also a great day yeah yeah true risky is definitely true with any of these hikes in the winter
[01:20:27] yeah yeah no doubt about it and I would say sledding down the cog rail road
[01:20:31] and then also the south handcock those were probably the two best sledding moments
[01:20:36] hmm and as far as my gear evolution went so I started in 2015 my first winter hike I wore a
[01:20:47] an external frame backpack my ski jacket and ski pants and I brought about 25 pounds worth of
[01:20:55] uh peanuts and um trail mix that I didn't need so I vote my gear is evolved quite a bit
[01:21:05] I did change backpacks I used to carry a like a 55 liter dooder act light backpack I did
[01:21:13] about half my hikes with the dooder and then the last two or three years I switched over to a
[01:21:18] hyperlite southwest 3,400 which is a 55 liter pack um
[01:21:25] gear that I added so I added that thermos so remember we've talked about this before stomp when
[01:21:30] my friend got hypothermia like I always carry a thermos full of hot hot chocolate or hot water
[01:21:37] um sit pad so I always bring either a sit pad or a sleeping pad that I can blow up
[01:21:44] I'm definitely more apt to bring a sleeping bag now I do bring a bivvy but more and more
[01:21:49] I've been adding just a sleeping bag into it because I've got a lighter weight sleeping bag that I
[01:21:54] can bring that gives me you know eight to ten hours of safety um snow shoes I pretty much wore
[01:22:02] MSR evos through this entire you know the last seven or eight years they've been fine the only
[01:22:08] thing they don't have is the the the elevator lift which I now have new snow shoes that have
[01:22:13] that so I guess I missed that yeah uh I only use crampons maybe three or four times during the
[01:22:22] entire time that I climbed I used them once on earline I think I used them on maybe I used
[01:22:29] them on esaciolla or I can't remember I think I did and then um I used them
[01:22:36] I think going up low's path and I might have used them one or two more times but that was about it
[01:22:43] all right so when you say crampon are you talking about the deeper hill sounds or like a 12 point
[01:22:48] mountaineering type of thing or the two yeah the 12 point so I have groveled maybe the 10 point
[01:22:54] did g tens okay so um did the grovel they're the true crampons yes the spikes I mean you can really
[01:23:01] like bite in and climb on ice with those things right yeah I could see that being really helpful
[01:23:06] on east osthia hola holy moly yeah super steep um I had I went through three pairs of boots so
[01:23:15] I think my original boots were like these leather not insulated boots that I had for like maybe the
[01:23:19] first first season and then I quickly bought uh Solomon 200 gram boots that I wore for maybe like
[01:23:29] three years and then maybe three four years ago I bought um keen rebel fours which are 400 gram
[01:23:37] finsolate yeah and I've been running with those things ever since um in addition that I had
[01:23:45] sheep uh gators that I bought off an Amazon that went nylon but those started sweating out on me so
[01:23:51] I got rid of those and I switched to outdoor research gator crocs gators so those things are
[01:24:00] much much nicer okay my glove system never really changed I talked about this before essentially
[01:24:08] liner gloves with a wool mitten that flips open and then I've got my outdoor research shells
[01:24:17] that um you know so that keeps me super warm and then I've got a couple of additional gloves
[01:24:22] that I talked about earlier I think stomp one of the things I changed up is I've added a lot more
[01:24:27] clips to my backpack so I've got a lot of stuff on the outside of my pack for easy access yeah
[01:24:34] get a lot better at that over time well speaking of that how do you attach your snowshoes
[01:24:41] I have a lot of people that ask me how to do that and they have trouble with it
[01:24:46] so it's involved over time so the snowshoes originally I would put
[01:24:53] the snowshoes with the crampons facing out on the dooder I would have one side
[01:24:59] on either pocket and then I had like compression straps that I could just basically cinch up
[01:25:05] so I had the weight evenly distributed on the side the only down part of that is that I covered up
[01:25:12] with a water bottle holder so then I would be forced to put my water bottle either in the back
[01:25:18] pocket or inside the the backpack itself which was kind of a pain in the neck um I did play around
[01:25:25] a little bit with like an insulated thing that was clipped onto my backpack but I never really
[01:25:31] liked it because it just moved around a lot yeah I understand that well I played around a little
[01:25:39] bit with the dooder putting the the snowshoes underneath the brain on top but I didn't love that
[01:25:49] either because in the way I just felt like it's yeah it's a weird sort of balance yeah
[01:25:55] the weights a little too heavy so then when I switched over to the hyper light it became easy
[01:26:00] because I simply just put them in the pocket in the back and they just sit there interesting
[01:26:06] so the far back the far back yeah so and I feel like the weight distribution for whatever reason
[01:26:12] just works better that way um and then you can also you can also stick them in the brain if you want to
[01:26:20] it's not really a brain they have like compression straps that go over the top and I've done that
[01:26:24] before as well so but yeah I mean that's basically the main options is essentially like put them
[01:26:31] in a pocket split them up and put one on each side or put them on top and through the brain yeah
[01:26:38] I have my water hanging right off my my right strap in the front with a carabiner
[01:26:45] and it's insulated so it opens up the two side pockets and I've actually resorted to getting
[01:26:52] right now I have a it's probably at at rest it's probably two feet a bungee a gray bungee
[01:26:59] it's really cool looking so it's not like this eye sore that will strap around so I can stick them
[01:27:05] in the side pockets teeth out and then just bungemon done I've frustrated I've been so frustrated
[01:27:14] with the whole process of trying to find a good spot for my uh snow shoes but I think I have
[01:27:19] worked out now finally yeah yeah matter fact I use my ultimate direction my 25 liter to hike
[01:27:25] Mount Hill and I had my snow shoes and what I did is I took like a carabiner clip that's a double
[01:27:31] clip and I was able to connect the um the straps together to form like basically like a catch for my
[01:27:40] snow shoes in the bottom and then I had another compression like an elastic strap
[01:27:45] that I was able to strap around them and I was able to put them on there and we ended up using our
[01:27:50] snow shoes because it was like mashed potatoes halfway up so yeah I took them off but they were
[01:27:55] easy to mount worked out well does your pack or any of your packs have bottom straps because my
[01:28:03] they do and what I would the bottom strap I would that's what I did with the the ultimate direction
[01:28:08] is I I took the bottom straps and I connected them with a carabiner yeah and then that basically
[01:28:15] forms a pocket that the the snow shoes drop into perfectly oh I see what you're saying because
[01:28:20] I I'm looking forward to using that bottom strap for my my thermal light pad because for the reason
[01:28:28] being I mean you could put that pad anywhere but I like the fact that if it's on the bottom
[01:28:32] you can rest your pack on the ground and not saturate the bottom of your pack which should be
[01:28:37] somewhat water resistant anyway but I it never is 100% so I like that idea so I'm gonna try
[01:28:43] that out next season if not this season yeah yeah yeah so the gear out of all I think it just in
[01:28:50] general knowing where to put all my stuff inside my backpack having more pockets on the outside
[01:28:57] knowing to crack open like a a hand warmer before I get out of my car so that it's warm when I
[01:29:04] start hiking yeah knowing to start cold and being self-assured that okay I'm gonna warm up so I don't
[01:29:10] have to worry about it versus having to stop and take off all my gear like over time those
[01:29:15] those just those instincts and those those capabilities they start building up yeah it's like
[01:29:20] little tricks you start using it's like all right well make sure I have a clip on my shoulder
[01:29:24] so I can clip my hiking poles and flip them over the back so if I don't want to deal with them
[01:29:28] that's very easy to grab them and and put them away yeah very cool yeah yeah the other thing
[01:29:35] stopped that I sort of realized over time is I somehow stopped becoming a solo hiker so in the very
[01:29:41] beginning I mean I was mostly a solo hiker yeah and then over the course of the you know the time
[01:29:49] I picked up all these friends you know so it's like you know shout out to my friend Jonathan
[01:29:56] and Tom who you know that Jonathan got me started and Tom was always along the way
[01:30:00] um for sure and they sort of Jonathan gave me and Tom like all the information we needed and took us
[01:30:06] out which I'll be forever grateful and then you know Steve and Jake and Peter and Nick and
[01:30:12] Nobi and you know you and Jimmy Chaga and Casey and everybody I mean there's a million people
[01:30:18] I could list that I've picked up and I know I can go hike him with so it's like it's another one
[01:30:23] of these things where you know you're picking up these these peaks and you're checking them off but
[01:30:28] you're also gaining all these friends as you go along which is cool yeah it's a great great community
[01:30:35] yeah so and then shout out to all the listeners for you know all the you know getting to know
[01:30:41] everybody has been amazing so it's great well congratulations well done thanks thanks yeah I'm on
[01:30:48] to the bell naps next all 12 yep well now I got I think I like four left oh it's not too bad
[01:30:56] not too bad at all I think I'm sort of shifting back into my 500 mode for the warmer weather
[01:31:03] yeah yeah and I think this time of the year is where I start thinking about like the bell naps
[01:31:06] I start thinking about um the ocep range you know the I kind of avoid like the the higher summits for
[01:31:15] the next you know but until mid-May I'll get back out there no it's it's slip in my mind what's
[01:31:20] the name of the range over by castle the clouds with char and all that's the awesome piece the
[01:31:25] awesome piece all right so yeah black snout and um brawberts yeah that whole area is fantastic great
[01:31:32] yeah that's definitely on the radar
[01:32:02] all right stop so um moving on to recent searching rescue news so we're gonna stick with the local
[01:32:13] stories now because we're tight on time here so let me just pull this first one up here missing
[01:32:21] elderly woman found deceased in Lebanon the Hampshire so 2.35 a.m. on Sunday March 17th Lebanon
[01:32:28] police department was notified of a missing elderly woman from their town they deployed
[01:32:35] personnel along with a canine unit to Oak Ridge Road to look for her couple hours of searching
[01:32:41] they requested assistance from other agencies the woman was identified as a 76 year old woman
[01:32:48] from Lebanon suffering from Alzheimer's disease she walked away from her home in the early morning
[01:32:53] hours husband noticed she was gone and quickly notified police so that's a horrible story
[01:33:01] Lebanon fire department upper valley wilderness response knowing on canine the Lebanon community
[01:33:07] all came together for the search and you know they they found you know the effort was around about
[01:33:15] a mile from the area where she had gone missing and around 1.30 p.m. that day of fisherman alerted
[01:33:24] authorities to a sighting he had along the Connecticut River and um the state in the Hampshire
[01:33:30] state police helicopter unit was able to attract a sighting and they located the body and um
[01:33:37] unfortunately they you know they brought her to shore around 2.45 p.m. um notified next to kin so
[01:33:43] about 12 hours after she went missing they located her so terrible story it is maybe that's something
[01:33:49] we can touch upon with 48 peaks Alzheimer's maybe they can provide some tips as to what families can do
[01:33:56] to I don't know mitigate a situation like this it's got to be a challenge you know you have
[01:34:01] somebody that has dementia and this happens a lot and what can you do with this only so much
[01:34:07] you can do well that's it is I mean the family's doing what they either well there's two things that go
[01:34:12] on one is either the you know this will be my instinct is the family wants to keep her with the
[01:34:19] family absolutely you know for as long as they can because it's it's probably better than being in a
[01:34:25] home yeah and then you know you take the risk of something like this happening the other issue is
[01:34:30] financially maybe you know there's a financial challenge there where the cost of putting her
[01:34:35] in a home is infeasible for them and then they're you know this happens so that right it's it's
[01:34:40] tough to know but it's just a sad story so yeah we'll definitely maybe bring this up and talk
[01:34:44] to them about it yeah um next one here stump these are really depressing so we got another decease so
[01:34:52] on March 16th the Hampshire fishing game initiated a large scale land search in the town of
[01:34:58] barnstead searching for any cruise or a clue is related to the disappearance of Ashley Turkot
[01:35:03] 33 of barnstead so Turkot had been missing since January 4th 2024 so going on a little over two
[01:35:11] months and search teams consisted of the Pemmy's lakes region in New England K9 and the Hampshire
[01:35:20] national got so Pemmy search lakes region search so about 70 volunteers became begins searching or
[01:35:28] an 830 conducting line searches in designated areas shortly before 11 a search team consisting of
[01:35:35] the newly organized New Hampshire National Guard volunteer search and rescue team along with
[01:35:40] conservation officers located to see spotty believes to be that of Turkot the body was about
[01:35:46] a half a mile from her vehicle oh where her vehicle was found in the day she went missing
[01:35:52] and confirmation on identity is still pending so you know big sort of cross agency coordination
[01:36:01] on this one with fishing game barnstead fire department bell naps sheriff department
[01:36:07] in the Hampshire red cross and the barnstead police department along with all the other
[01:36:11] volunteer search and rescue organization so sad story but luckily the family at least has some
[01:36:16] closure yeah that's exactly what I was going to say yeah and this I mean this one's been going
[01:36:24] this one's been on on Reddit and a lot of speculation so I don't really know what happened
[01:36:28] on this one but I'm just glad the family has closure yep all right uh hiker rescued from
[01:36:36] Ammonu sick ravine on Mount Washington so um wait a minute didn't we already do this one oh no we
[01:36:43] didn't do this so um Thursday March 7th 23 year old from Georgetown Kentucky was hiking Mount
[01:36:51] Washington when he went off trail and into the Ammonu sick ravine um the hiker fell and hit his
[01:36:57] head and face and lost one of his sneakers and eventually became hypothermic so he called 911 requesting
[01:37:03] help and conservation officers were able to ascertain his GPS locations he was well off trail
[01:37:11] in a drainage ravine alongside one of the tributaries of the Ammonu sick river north of the
[01:37:16] Ammonu sick ravine trail at about 36 hundred feet of elevator I feel like we did this story to stop
[01:37:21] but maybe yeah maybe yeah I think this is a repeat so I apologize listeners uh but anyway the
[01:37:28] the hiker was given boots food warm drinks proper winter gear and a headlamp and it was escorted
[01:37:33] back to the trail yeah or was it the one that uh the person went to lake of the clouds hut
[01:37:39] dungeon there and sheltered there maybe we're mixing that one up no no I think we did the I think
[01:37:45] we did the that one as well but um all right I can cut this whole thing out if you want
[01:37:50] no it's fine it's all right so but we'll see we'll see you work your magic on the edit sure
[01:37:58] so um all right this story is Friday March 8th 2024 a uh 51 year old female hiker was
[01:38:09] descending when she slipped on a steep in icy section a trail after sliding on rock for about
[01:38:16] 25 feet she sustained injuries that did not allow her to continue hiking partner called 911
[01:38:23] the hiker was identified as um somebody had a Montreal canada she had five other hiking partners
[01:38:30] that's that started with her around 10 a.m. that morning expecting to complete the franconia ridge
[01:38:37] loop in daylight hours the group did not stay together um they left this woman in her partner without
[01:38:47] a light source and uh they started hiking down falling water trail from the top of Haystack at 4 p.m.
[01:38:55] At approximately 630 they couldn't see well they fell on a steep section of trail
[01:39:01] were waiting for the rescuers to arrive another good Samaritan hiker came on the duo and gave
[01:39:05] the hiker a sleeping pad to lay on and another layer of clothes to keep warm
[01:39:10] the rescue crew hiked up about a mile to her location and carried her down so kudos to that good Samaritan
[01:39:17] hiker we always talk about this all the time yeah for sure so don't leave your friends don't split up
[01:39:23] exactly um but luckily this good Samaritan was there with a light source and and a pad to
[01:39:29] to weed it out but uh call came in at 640 and they got her back to the road around 10 p.m. so that's
[01:39:35] pretty good time yeah not too bad yeah not too far up nope um and then this last one lot of death
[01:39:43] today stomp yeah sort of fortunate sort of a downer here at the end yeah yeah this is uh this is
[01:39:51] said so a woman died after falling about 600 feet down tukum and ravine on Mount Washington so
[01:39:58] I heard it on Saturday yes 600 vertical I'm assuming that's a lot like it was a lot of rain and freeze
[01:40:03] and maybe like they was skiing and they just hitly ice a bite or something yeah yeah I would think so
[01:40:10] I'm not too sure though it's not my expertise yeah there's a quote in here um
[01:40:17] I think over the course of the week we lost about 13 inches of snow in the snow pack it was warm
[01:40:22] there was rain it was wet snow pack the temperatures dropped it got cold and it froze and became
[01:40:28] a firm surface at chef Feng Jimmy director of Mount Washington Abel on center Abelant Center
[01:40:36] responding teams from Mount Washington Abelant Center and US Forest Service work to evacuate
[01:40:41] evacuate the skier from the mountain and um
[01:40:50] yeah I guess the the comment here is that there was like some other injured
[01:40:55] um skiers that weren't as severe but they had this elevated sense of emergency it was a busy day
[01:41:03] it's not usually as busy as it was so there was two other skiers that sustained
[01:41:08] traumatic injuries from ice and rocks at the same time so just a rough day overall on
[01:41:16] on that day but yeah 20-year-old woman 600 feet of vertical she fell down and passed away
[01:41:23] terrible if any listeners have any insight as to who could come on to discuss the bowls
[01:41:30] on the eastern side of Washington uh that are backcountry skiers or in that uh field
[01:41:38] definitely drop us a direct message I think it might be a really good topic to cover at some point
[01:41:44] yeah real big D-dive yeah I'd be happy to talk uh talk to somebody about it but uh
[01:41:50] but that's it's not I'm glad to be back I'm glad that you got your new studio and uh
[01:41:55] I'm looking forward to getting out this weekend I'm gonna get somewhere on Sunday somewhere low

[01:42:55] christav wanted to complete his most challenging day hike ever fishing game officers say the
[01:43:01] hiker from florida activated an emergency begin yesterday morning he was hiking along the
[01:43:07] appellation trail when the weather started to get worse official say the snow was piled up
[01:43:12] to three feet in some spots and there was a wind show of minus one degree
[01:43:24] ten of james neil and your hamster fishing game whose end of things for being with us today
[01:43:30] what are some of the most common mistakes you see people make when they're heading out on the trails
[01:43:33] to hike here in your hamster seems to me the most common as being unprepared i think if they
[01:43:37] just simply visited hikesafe.com and got a list of the ten essential items and had those in their
[01:43:42] packs they probably would have no need to ever call us at all
