[00:02:43] Broadcasting from the Woodpecker Studio in the great state of New Hampshire, welcome to the
[00:03:06] Sounds Like a Search and Rescue podcast where we discuss all things related to hiking and
[00:03:12] search and rescue in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
[00:03:15] Here are your hosts, Mike and Stump.
[00:03:39] Alright, welcome to episode 147 of the Sounds Like a Search and Rescue podcast.
[00:03:46] Tonight while Mike is gallivanting over in Europe, we have very special guests, Eric
[00:03:52] Todd Sweet and Dave Schitts in the Woods, special in-house guests.
[00:03:58] So they're here live at the Woodpecker Studio and we are going to be covering all the
[00:04:03] craziness that happened over the eclipse.
[00:04:07] An update on some modern art that's blowing up minds of hikers.
[00:04:11] We're going to talk a little bit about geocaching and what that means for the White Mountains
[00:04:16] and leave no trace.
[00:04:19] We've got a couple dad jokes for you, a special eclipse edition.
[00:04:23] And of course later on in the show we are visited by the great people of 48 Peaks
[00:04:29] Alzheimer's.
[00:04:31] So I'm Stump and I'm Stomp.
[00:04:37] Let's get started.
[00:05:07] This has been Pease from Hiking Buddies.
[00:05:09] We are a 501C3 non-profit committed to reducing avoidable tragedies through education, impactful
[00:05:15] projects and fostering a community of support.
[00:05:17] You can find out more at hikingbuddies.org.
[00:05:20] We wanted to say thank you to those who have supported our mission and most importantly
[00:05:24] say thanks to those who speak up, who ask questions and who are willing to provide
[00:05:28] guidance and assistance on the trails when needed.
[00:05:31] You embody what it means to be a hiking buddy.
[00:05:33] And now for all my newer hikers out there, here's this episode's Hiking Buddies Quick Tip.
[00:05:46] Plan the hike taking in all ability and skill levels.
[00:05:50] Pre-planning will promote a successful hike.
[00:05:55] Communicate with team members
[00:05:57] and deploy a solid plan.
[00:06:13] Alright, we are rolling.
[00:06:15] I'm just gonna roll it.
[00:06:17] Run. Welcome!
[00:06:20] Alright, this is Stomp. I'm here with Dave
[00:06:24] Leaps in the Woods and Eric Todd Sweet while Mike is hanging out in Krakow, Europe.
[00:06:32] You said Krakow?
[00:06:34] I thought he said Krakow.
[00:06:36] I was worried.
[00:06:38] I didn't know.
[00:06:40] He seemed like he had high energy.
[00:06:42] That makes sense.
[00:06:44] I knew there was a reason.
[00:06:46] Yeah, it's a deep secret.
[00:06:48] He doesn't want to tell anybody.
[00:06:50] He sent me a text from Krakow.
[00:06:52] I'm just gonna rub it in.
[00:06:54] It's a better one.
[00:06:56] Let's see.
[00:06:58] I don't even know what episode this is.
[00:07:00] 147.
[00:07:02] We're just hanging in Thornton.
[00:07:04] We have in-house guests tonight.
[00:07:06] We were talking about maybe not recording this week,
[00:07:08] but we had a guest lined up.
[00:07:10] So we figured we'd make it happen.
[00:07:12] We really appreciate you guys coming by.
[00:07:14] Appreciate it.
[00:07:16] Thank you.
[00:07:18] Let's start off with the old Apocalypse.
[00:07:20] Let's get right to the notable hike
[00:07:22] and let's vote for me right now.
[00:07:24] Because Mike's not here.
[00:07:26] Let's just get this done.
[00:07:28] Let's get right to it, right?
[00:07:30] So how was your Apocalypse, Eric?
[00:07:32] Awesome.
[00:07:34] What did you end up doing?
[00:07:36] Went to Christine Lake up in Stark, New Hampshire.
[00:07:38] With Captain Chris Lynn Suiza.
[00:07:40] Oh yeah.
[00:07:42] And a couple of friends and buddy Bob.
[00:07:44] Yeah.
[00:07:46] Actually a lot of hikers show up too.
[00:07:48] So where is this place exactly?
[00:07:50] It's not far from Cabot.
[00:07:52] Not too far from Cabot.
[00:07:54] It's past Lancaster.
[00:07:56] I got a dude from New Jersey hanging out with me for a week
[00:07:58] and he's the one that suggested,
[00:08:00] yeah, I'm going to go to Christine Lake.
[00:08:02] Never heard of it.
[00:08:04] Drove up there. A lot of people.
[00:08:06] But absolutely beautiful.
[00:08:08] You could walk right across the ice.
[00:08:10] It was crowded.
[00:08:12] It started off at maybe 20, 30.
[00:08:14] Ended up at maybe over 100.
[00:08:16] I'm going to Lynn Suiza.
[00:08:18] Put some glasses on it.
[00:08:20] She even put the sweatshirt.
[00:08:22] Did you see it?
[00:08:24] I thought you guys were at Lonesome Lake for some reason.
[00:08:26] No, no, no. Christine Lake.
[00:08:28] Never heard of it.
[00:08:30] Nice place.
[00:08:32] Awesome. How about you Dave?
[00:08:34] I was up in Vermont.
[00:08:36] I got the place in Vermont near St. John'sbury.
[00:08:38] Kind of around Littleton.
[00:08:40] It's right in the middle of it.
[00:08:42] Took the family up.
[00:08:44] We were in the first eclipse.
[00:08:46] We all just hung out with some friends.
[00:08:48] It's cool.
[00:08:50] You must have got a better view than we did.
[00:08:52] I think we got...
[00:08:54] You were in the middle more, right?
[00:08:56] It was 100%. Not as long as I thought it was going to be.
[00:08:58] But it was really cool.
[00:09:00] It got quiet.
[00:09:02] The only thing we heard was the kids like,
[00:09:04] wow!
[00:09:06] Yeah, yeah. Cold too though.
[00:09:08] We went to Percy's Peaks.
[00:09:10] We could see Percy's Peaks from Christine Lake.
[00:09:12] North Percy, what direction do you look to see the lake?
[00:09:14] South?
[00:09:16] South. That would be correct.
[00:09:18] We have to go a little further north but not far.
[00:09:20] It's like the Nash Stream area.
[00:09:22] Yeah, yeah, exactly.
[00:09:24] I thought that that area would be really cool for that.
[00:09:26] Yeah, quiet out there man.
[00:09:28] I love for sure.
[00:09:30] Really a room up place. A lot of people don't even know about it.
[00:09:32] Alright, so...
[00:09:34] Dave, were you in the totality?
[00:09:36] Yes.
[00:09:38] This place was? The Christine Lake?
[00:09:40] You left early, right Eric?
[00:09:42] Super early.
[00:09:44] We went to Chris's house at 7 o'clock in the morning
[00:09:46] and we were there by like 8.30.
[00:09:48] We picked up Bob and
[00:09:50] we just wanted to get there early.
[00:09:52] Have some coffees and hang out just in case.
[00:09:54] Luckily we did because there was almost no parking
[00:09:56] an hour later. That was it. It was already packed.
[00:09:58] I've never seen anything like it.
[00:10:00] No. We got home. It took us 3.30 to get home.
[00:10:02] And then Bob left at 2.30 in the morning
[00:10:04] to go to work back in Massachusetts.
[00:10:06] He goes, you wouldn't believe this
[00:10:08] Bob's got a truck traffic on the Frankone
[00:10:10] and he sent me a picture.
[00:10:12] Miles of cars.
[00:10:14] It was incredible.
[00:10:16] Usually it's about a little over 2 hours
[00:10:18] from the cabin back home.
[00:10:20] My son went down 93 and I'm like,
[00:10:22] I'm going to cut through.
[00:10:24] I did the dad thing. I know how to get to 91.
[00:10:26] They directed me right downtown St. John'sbury
[00:10:28] and I lived there for an hour.
[00:10:30] And I was like, this did not work.
[00:10:32] He beat us home by over an hour and a half.
[00:10:34] We went through Frankone
[00:10:36] and then we took a left and then we went by the hostel.
[00:10:38] And it was still backed up.
[00:10:40] It was everywhere.
[00:10:42] You went 93, 91, 89
[00:10:44] It was nuts.
[00:10:46] My day started at Med River Coffee
[00:10:48] at like 8.30
[00:10:50] Met Mike Latavaya
[00:10:52] Latavaya, another hiker, local guy
[00:10:54] he's a listener
[00:10:56] We chatted for a bit and then I left.
[00:10:58] That place was mobbed.
[00:11:00] It was absolutely mobbed
[00:11:02] and driving north to Lincoln
[00:11:04] because I go up over Lost River to get to North Havel
[00:11:06] for PT
[00:11:08] I was flowing with traffic
[00:11:10] just moving
[00:11:12] but on the way back I got out early
[00:11:14] and I could not believe
[00:11:16] the amount of cars coming up Lost River
[00:11:18] I don't even know where they were going
[00:11:20] Where were they going?
[00:11:22] They were finding any open spot over water
[00:11:24] cause when I left
[00:11:26] I was doing the same thing
[00:11:28] going along like suckers
[00:11:30] and then I was in it like
[00:11:32] Serious. Yeah, by the time I got out back to 93
[00:11:34] It was backed out to
[00:11:36] from Lincoln
[00:11:38] I mean the notch, forget the notch
[00:11:40] it backed down all the way to like
[00:11:42] exit 30, exit 29
[00:11:44] Just stand still
[00:11:46] I did the Franconi Ridge today
[00:11:48] but I also did it Sunday with a friend
[00:11:50] and Sunday
[00:11:52] when you go home
[00:11:54] you have to go up north a little bit
[00:11:56] turn around to the tramway
[00:11:58] You never see anybody going north
[00:12:01] I'm like you're gonna be kidding me
[00:12:03] I will say for the amount of mass plates
[00:12:05] there weren't that many dicks on the road
[00:12:07] I was stunned
[00:12:09] everybody was like
[00:12:11] I buried my past
[00:12:13] but yeah I was there two for a while
[00:12:15] but nobody was weaving it out
[00:12:17] people let me go
[00:12:19] I was like I'm confused maybe it is the apocalypse
[00:12:21] it's a sign people were being nice
[00:12:23] they had mass plates, they let me in
[00:12:25] I was like I don't understand
[00:12:27] We usually run you over
[00:12:29] but bandwidth too
[00:12:31] I was trying to post some stuff on the way back
[00:12:33] and there was just like no service
[00:12:35] so many people were using the local service
[00:12:37] for the internet and whatever
[00:12:39] I would love to see Google Maps
[00:12:41] like trajectory or usage
[00:12:43] as soon as it was over
[00:12:45] everybody trying to find a back road
[00:12:47] everybody was doing the same thing
[00:12:49] turn left, turn right
[00:12:51] you can see everybody late
[00:12:53] I did hear rumors that it took some people
[00:12:55] 12 hours to get from Lancaster down to Nashua
[00:12:57] wow
[00:12:59] some people were coming in at like 4 in the morning
[00:13:01] I'm in that area
[00:13:03] we left 430 and got home at 9
[00:13:05] really?
[00:13:07] well Lynn was supposed to go home
[00:13:09] she ended up sleeping over
[00:13:11] you can't go home right now
[00:13:13] it's kind of like the AT bubble
[00:13:15] if you were ahead of it, you got through
[00:13:17] if you were in the bubble, you were in the bubble
[00:13:19] we would have got through
[00:13:21] and you just suffered along with everyone
[00:13:23] that's a wild
[00:13:25] temperature change
[00:13:27] I'd noticed that too
[00:13:29] it was stunning
[00:13:31] so I was just right out here in front of the studio
[00:13:33] sitting on these awesome chairs
[00:13:35] you guys are in now
[00:13:37] they still smell like the eclipse
[00:13:39] I know, it's just like
[00:13:41] ah yeah
[00:13:43] you notice I gave you the better one though
[00:13:45] it's a little more cozy
[00:13:47] only the best for guests here
[00:13:49] both our legs are dangling
[00:13:51] we got a little height problem
[00:13:53] funny chairs here
[00:13:55] if you haven't noticed, we're renovating a whole bunch of stuff
[00:13:57] so I ended up
[00:13:59] tossing some chairs I needed
[00:14:01] are you a psychiatrist or sugar?
[00:14:03] what do you have the bed there for
[00:14:05] should I lay down and tell you my problems?
[00:14:07] I started when I was 6
[00:14:09] you want me to say my health
[00:14:11] and it hasn't stopped
[00:14:13] that's quite the quilt isn't it
[00:14:15] I was late, I was home crying by myself
[00:14:17] now I can lay down
[00:14:19] on the couch over here
[00:14:21] oh man, that might take too long
[00:14:23] we only have 2 hours
[00:14:25] the other thing I noticed
[00:14:27] after the fact was
[00:14:29] all the animals were quiet
[00:14:31] did you guys notice that?
[00:14:33] everything, it was crazy
[00:14:35] absolute silence
[00:14:37] did you even Chris pointed this out
[00:14:39] the second the sun popped back out
[00:14:41] everything was bright
[00:14:43] immediately
[00:14:45] you could hear them settle down at night
[00:14:47] and then that first bird you're here in the morning
[00:14:49] came up and he's going to be screwed up in 3 hours
[00:14:51] she's going to be like what?
[00:14:53] all the plants are going to die again
[00:14:55] so it's going to be tough
[00:14:57] I was listening
[00:14:59] what the hell is that
[00:15:01] hold on a sec
[00:15:03] is it built in karaoke?
[00:15:07] that was the hiking buddies thing
[00:15:09] this is the British guy now
[00:15:11] see I'm a swizer
[00:15:13] like a Swifty
[00:15:15] like a Sweezy
[00:15:17] I've seen the bumper before right?
[00:15:19] cause I was a Sweezy
[00:15:21] I liked her when she did the
[00:15:23] remember Lynn was doing the hiking buddies
[00:15:25] ad on this thing
[00:15:27] she was doing the tips
[00:15:29] we'd candor, yeah she's fired
[00:15:31] I'm a Sweezy
[00:15:33] I don't know
[00:15:35] I liked her better than the British guy
[00:15:37] no offense British guy
[00:15:39] it would grow on you
[00:15:41] so Andy Barlow
[00:15:43] he's awesome
[00:15:45] it's a fun session actually
[00:15:47] he came over and laid down a bunch of that stuff
[00:15:49] we were laughing for a while
[00:15:51] I see him on the trails once in a while
[00:15:53] absolute gentleman
[00:15:55] sorry about that
[00:15:57] what you're looking at behind me here
[00:15:59] is the monitor and all the tracks
[00:16:01] I use for the podcast
[00:16:03] I forgot to shut one off
[00:16:05] but anyway
[00:16:07] before that thing chimed in
[00:16:09] I saw this story today
[00:16:11] you guys are going to love this
[00:16:13] this is a post
[00:16:15] eclipse
[00:16:17] faux pas
[00:16:19] so a Mexican
[00:16:21] station
[00:16:23] it's a new station
[00:16:25] they were trying to ear a video of the eclipse
[00:16:29] and by accident they ear
[00:16:31] a video of
[00:16:33] some pair of testicles
[00:16:35] instead of the eclipse
[00:16:37] I swear to god this is on
[00:16:39] TMZ
[00:16:41] it's a
[00:16:43] to Sclips Day
[00:16:47] great ball in the sky
[00:16:49] now we got to find out
[00:16:51] I couldn't believe it
[00:16:53] so yeah that happened
[00:16:55] that's a pretty big mistake
[00:16:57] so seconds later the testes dropped into frame
[00:16:59] blocking the light
[00:17:01] giving audiences a brief but very up close
[00:17:03] look at someone's family jewels
[00:17:05] so you can see the visible shock
[00:17:07] on the faces of two of the anchors
[00:17:09] and everybody at once turned their heads in cough
[00:17:11] right
[00:17:17] so what's next on the apocalypse thing
[00:17:19] here
[00:17:21] I read that this spring
[00:17:23] and summer were going to be hit by a trillion
[00:17:25] cacadas you know those bugs
[00:17:27] those beetles that come out every several years
[00:17:29] cacadas
[00:17:31] are they cicadas?
[00:17:33] did you hear the story?
[00:17:35] no
[00:17:38] there are several
[00:17:40] from what I understand that
[00:17:42] unfortunately this year
[00:17:44] all of these several species are lining up
[00:17:46] to come out at the same time
[00:17:48] so the midwest
[00:17:50] upper midwest are going to have a trillion
[00:17:52] of these things roaming around
[00:17:54] isn't that wild?
[00:17:56] is it like a bugs life?
[00:17:58] did they figure out this more of them?
[00:18:00] if the murder hornets came out
[00:18:02] and they thought
[00:18:04] remember that the murder hornets
[00:18:06] scared
[00:18:08] so if there's a southern
[00:18:10] down where there's testicles in the sky
[00:18:12] not up here
[00:18:14] literally
[00:18:16] I don't know
[00:18:18] but yeah that's coming up next
[00:18:20] is this a podcast or a comedy show?
[00:18:22] it's tough without the laugh track
[00:18:24] I don't know if we're killing it
[00:18:26] or if everyone's going to be at 3 minute
[00:18:28] and everyone's like next week
[00:18:30] when's Mike coming back?
[00:18:32] Mike, hey, Mike
[00:18:34] we're flying Boeing
[00:18:36] let's see what happens
[00:18:38] you guys can get a job with me here
[00:18:40] so yeah, what's next on the play calendar
[00:18:42] this is the end of the world or what
[00:18:44] so we've got some bugs
[00:18:46] we've got the apocalypse
[00:18:48] whatever
[00:18:50] and then of course there's the modern art update
[00:18:52] did you have you been following this?
[00:18:54] no
[00:18:56] we talked about this last week
[00:18:58] there's a state park in Arkansas
[00:19:00] that's putting up modern art
[00:19:02] tall blobs
[00:19:04] blue green blobs
[00:19:06] and the hikers are in
[00:19:08] uproar
[00:19:10] they want these things gone
[00:19:12] and there's a petition now that's up to say
[00:19:14] like 3,000-4,000 people
[00:19:16] that signed it that want to get rid of these things
[00:19:18] I put a poll up saying
[00:19:20] we should purchase one of these things
[00:19:22] and see if we can put it somewhere
[00:19:24] put it on my washing, there's plenty of stuff up there
[00:19:26] right next to the...
[00:19:28] it was fight over who owns it
[00:19:30] I was thinking right on the
[00:19:32] the Bondcliffe perch
[00:19:34] that's perfect, people would dig it
[00:19:36] nobody complains about anything anyway
[00:19:38] so dude, I put this up on
[00:19:40] the slasher instagram
[00:19:42] and one listener said
[00:19:44] put it in Eric Todd's cabin
[00:19:46] well it fit
[00:19:48] I doubt it, maybe outside
[00:19:50] but outside it'd be an ornament
[00:19:52] throw some Christmas lights around
[00:19:54] I was thinking we get in touch with Larry the log
[00:19:56] and maybe even Carrie, it'd be Larry the blob
[00:19:58] he just carries that thing everywhere
[00:20:00] and I don't know
[00:20:02] or you could just move it to a summit of month
[00:20:04] we have to go find it
[00:20:06] you get a punch card, kind of like
[00:20:08] you're in his village or you find all the elves
[00:20:10] you get like a free coffee at Man River
[00:20:12] or you find it before anything else
[00:20:14] that's what I'm thinking, you got a special hat
[00:20:16] or we just put it in the back of your truck
[00:20:18] and you just tulle around with it
[00:20:20] so you know what you and I would go by
[00:20:22] I know that guy
[00:20:24] as if the truck isn't obvious enough
[00:20:26] we saw the plate and we were trying to get you to come out
[00:20:28] we were going to Hitchcock
[00:20:30] that's funny
[00:20:32] so anyway that's going on
[00:20:34] oh yeah here's another one, how about Hooks it
[00:20:36] Hooks it rest stop, Mike would love that
[00:20:38] that'd be perfect
[00:20:40] which side though
[00:20:42] probably northbound
[00:20:44] you know how busy that place must have been yesterday
[00:20:46] oh my god, yeah
[00:20:48] just the liquor sales, the gas sales
[00:20:50] huge
[00:20:52] I just felt the worst thing
[00:20:54] the hysteria is up the audience
[00:20:56] the abuse they must have seen in the last 24 hours
[00:20:58] for real
[00:21:00] unbelievable
[00:21:02] well there were no rescues or anything like that
[00:21:04] no, nothing happened
[00:21:06] amazing, especially with the snow
[00:21:08] I get the impression that
[00:21:10] the concern of people hiking
[00:21:12] to try to see it
[00:21:14] was probably diminished
[00:21:16] it just seemed like they stayed in their cars
[00:21:18] it's because of the conditions
[00:21:20] it's horrifying
[00:21:22] I don't know if the people would have been busier
[00:21:24] with the towing out of the mud
[00:21:26] I didn't see anything
[00:21:28] literally just a bunch of cars
[00:21:30] saw a ton on the highway
[00:21:32] but statistically that's going to happen
[00:21:34] because you have that many people moving
[00:21:36] we did see a lot of cars pulled over to take a leak
[00:21:38] I did see a guy vomit
[00:21:40] that was the highlight
[00:21:42] that's excitement
[00:21:44] and we brought the show down enough yet
[00:21:46] are we going to keep going?
[00:21:48] we're going to bury this
[00:21:50] are you guys familiar with geocaching?
[00:21:52] yes
[00:21:54] what's your understanding of it?
[00:21:56] you download a map on your phone
[00:21:58] and then you go out
[00:22:00] and find a prize
[00:22:02] and there's a little trinket
[00:22:04] so it's pretty cool
[00:22:06] I did it years ago
[00:22:08] take something, leave something
[00:22:10] the reason I bring it up
[00:22:12] is when I hiked car mountain from the north
[00:22:14] halfway up
[00:22:16] it was literally
[00:22:18] the hood of 1930's
[00:22:20] 1940's auto
[00:22:22] mobile
[00:22:24] and I'm walking up to this thing
[00:22:26] what the hell is this thing
[00:22:28] it was literally a hood
[00:22:30] but it was standing upright
[00:22:32] I forget what color, maybe purple
[00:22:34] at first I was thinking it was one of these modern art pieces
[00:22:36] but then on the back of it
[00:22:38] it was a black box
[00:22:40] like 2 inches by 3 inches
[00:22:42] and it said official geocache
[00:22:44] so it was
[00:22:46] I've seen the box before
[00:22:48] it's like an artillery box
[00:22:50] or a pillbox
[00:22:52] there's a stamp in there
[00:22:54] you can stamp your thing
[00:22:56] you have a little geocache in book
[00:22:58] that you said hey I was here
[00:23:00] like a passport
[00:23:02] it's actually fun to get you out
[00:23:04] my dad didn't know it
[00:23:06] he's a geocache machine
[00:23:08] geocache
[00:23:10] after seeing that thing
[00:23:12] I was curious about it
[00:23:14] the episode
[00:23:16] we've talked about this way way way back
[00:23:18] in the past
[00:23:20] and the question is
[00:23:22] where is it allowed
[00:23:24] so
[00:23:26] the idea of a geocache
[00:23:28] or trinkets in the woods
[00:23:30] goes against leave no trace
[00:23:32] what's the deal with that
[00:23:34] I don't think there's any
[00:23:36] I found them everywhere
[00:23:38] I guess you cannot do it
[00:23:40] in the wilderness zones
[00:23:43] according to the white mountain
[00:23:45] actually some of them
[00:23:47] are hard to find
[00:23:49] they'll be buried under rocks
[00:23:51] roots and stumps
[00:23:53] I've seen them
[00:23:55] even a few years ago
[00:23:57] with the pair of stairs
[00:23:59] Madame Cherries Forest
[00:24:01] we went out there
[00:24:03] and did geocache
[00:24:05] Dave, are you familiar
[00:24:07] with locations of these things
[00:24:09] not up north
[00:24:11] the mall walkers
[00:24:13] shall we say
[00:24:15] outdoor mall walkers
[00:24:17] you're not going to put them on elevation
[00:24:19] track suits and sketches
[00:24:21] I'm not watching it
[00:24:23] I would assume that a lot of these
[00:24:25] even in the white mountain national forest
[00:24:27] they would be more down low
[00:24:29] not big elevation
[00:24:31] would be my guess
[00:24:33] but I'm learning a lot today
[00:24:35] I don't know
[00:24:37] I've definitely found some in the white mountain national forest
[00:24:39] Mr. Stomp and I found one
[00:24:41] at the beginning of the east pond loop
[00:24:43] when you're heading up
[00:24:45] maybe like a tenth of a mile
[00:24:47] there's the junction
[00:24:49] you can go left
[00:24:51] to Little East Pond
[00:24:53] or straight up towards the larger east pond
[00:24:55] to the right
[00:24:57] there's an old ancient 1800s foundation
[00:24:59] and there was one in there
[00:25:01] that was the old mill
[00:25:03] is that the history there
[00:25:05] let's dive
[00:25:07] that's what they used to do
[00:25:09] they scraped the east pond
[00:25:11] they used to scrape the history lesson
[00:25:13] they scraped
[00:25:15] I found it last time
[00:25:17] when I was doing middle scour
[00:25:19] they used to scape
[00:25:21] there was a guy who was a lumber baron
[00:25:23] it was his son that wound up setting up
[00:25:25] the mill
[00:25:27] and they used to scrape east pond
[00:25:29] for the algae on the bottom
[00:25:31] and it had the diatomaceous earth
[00:25:33] and they would break it down
[00:25:35] and a lot of people assumed he was using it
[00:25:37] to make better paper products
[00:25:39] and he ran it for about two years
[00:25:41] never made any money
[00:25:43] no one could understand why he kept doing it
[00:25:45] but he had this massive mill
[00:25:47] and if you follow it the pipes go up to east pond
[00:25:49] and they would drain
[00:25:51] but they would scrape it and run it down
[00:25:53] filter it through
[00:25:55] get that down, break it down
[00:25:57] and they believed he was using it for the paper
[00:25:59] but he never made any money
[00:26:01] and then it just kind of went bankrupt
[00:26:03] I had no idea
[00:26:05] because I went out to 118 the other day
[00:26:07] with a friend of mine
[00:26:09] and we checked out some of the old CCC camps
[00:26:11] oh wow
[00:26:13] I'm not familiar with that
[00:26:15] CCC
[00:26:17] my grandfather used to come here
[00:26:19] and do it years ago
[00:26:21] it was during the depression
[00:26:23] when they would actually the government
[00:26:25] to put people to work
[00:26:27] and to help them along
[00:26:29] they would have these different projects
[00:26:31] actually there's an old chimney back there
[00:26:33] there's a couple of them
[00:26:35] there's an old car buried in the mud
[00:26:37] that's pretty neat
[00:26:39] like camp 24
[00:26:41] if you ever go to the Hancocks
[00:26:43] stay on your Cedar Brook Trail
[00:26:45] because you can pop out on the east side
[00:26:47] of the way you call Lincoln Woods
[00:26:49] but before you take that left
[00:26:51] it's called camp 24
[00:26:53] you can see remnants of an old logging camp back there
[00:26:55] still, wood stoves and all kind of metal pots
[00:26:57] stuff is all over the place
[00:26:59] the whole Tripoli area to the Livermore
[00:27:01] the town of Livermore
[00:27:03] is down there with the Gris Mill
[00:27:05] all that stuff is down there
[00:27:07] you can follow those carriage roads
[00:27:09] all the way into Woodstock
[00:27:11] incredible
[00:27:13] so there we go
[00:27:15] some leave no trace tension there
[00:27:17] but it exists
[00:27:19] what I was saying is
[00:27:21] what is the 500 highest
[00:27:23] is really just geocaching at a high level
[00:27:25] because it runs chasing those canisters
[00:27:27] it's geocaching at a higher level
[00:27:29] I thought the same as well
[00:27:31] but
[00:27:33] for what purpose too
[00:27:35] you're literally logging the date in your name
[00:27:37] it's sort of funny
[00:27:39] I'm such a canister whore though
[00:27:41] I gotta find them
[00:27:43] did you find the one on Whitewall slide
[00:27:45] that's a hard one
[00:27:47] and trying to get back to find the slide
[00:27:49] was not easy
[00:27:51] I'm gonna do that one and then come out on the fire road
[00:27:53] there's a secret fire road
[00:27:55] yeah
[00:27:57] if you park at
[00:27:59] what's a Zealand
[00:28:01] that's what we did
[00:28:03] I just popped the broken fall of the fire road
[00:28:05] you can kind of bushwhack through the birch glades
[00:28:07] we just went right on Ethan Pond trail
[00:28:09] took a left and went right up the slide
[00:28:11] and then came back down
[00:28:13] and then went up a Zealand trail
[00:28:15] which goes straight up
[00:28:17] and then you hit Z-Cliff
[00:28:19] and then you go back out
[00:28:21] it's like a loop so you can go from
[00:28:23] I don't know if you knew that
[00:28:25] Z-Cliff is very steep
[00:28:27] and you got to cross the river
[00:28:29] that's a cool trail man
[00:28:31] it's a quick drop
[00:28:33] don't go in the rain
[00:28:35] that was so horrible
[00:28:37] coming down Z-Cliff
[00:28:39] in the rain
[00:28:41] it was like April
[00:28:43] we had to take our shoes off
[00:28:45] and roll our pants up
[00:28:47] talk about instant numb feet
[00:28:49] and legs
[00:28:51] it was horrible
[00:28:53] we were going to go to the whitewall slide
[00:28:55] we just took a left and went back on Ethan Pond trail
[00:28:57] and you end up back all the way
[00:28:59] it's just a big loop
[00:29:01] it's wild
[00:29:03] and now a word from our sponsor
[00:29:09] does your backpack not provide enough ventilation?
[00:29:11] does your back sweat too much

[00:30:40] we all know that hiking a mountain
[00:30:42] can be hard at times
[00:30:44] so here's a corny dad joke
[00:30:46] to help you get over it
[00:30:48] but um-bum
[00:30:50] alright well moving on I guess
[00:30:52] I got a couple dad jokes
[00:30:54] I know Mike usually does dad jokes
[00:30:56] but
[00:30:58] I sort of doled these out
[00:31:00] to both you guys but
[00:31:02] I don't know
[00:31:04] I can do them if you guys don't have access to them

[00:31:14] so here's the first one
[00:31:16] why should students
[00:31:18] not get out of class to see the eclipse
[00:31:20] I don't know
[00:31:22] they need to protect their pupils
[00:31:24] oh
[00:31:26] wow that's a dad joke
[00:31:28] that is a dad joke
[00:31:30] that's a testicle in the sky
[00:31:32] yeah that's a bad show
[00:31:34] low hanging fruit
[00:31:36] see it
[00:31:38] depends on the weather
[00:31:40] you made any things
[00:31:42] I tried to look at the eclipse
[00:31:44] through a colander
[00:31:46] but it only strained my eyes
[00:31:48] oh see
[00:31:50] I killed it
[00:31:52] I like that one
[00:31:54] I wish I wrote it myself
[00:31:56] can you see that?
[00:31:58] where is it here?
[00:32:00] oh it's right here
[00:32:02] you see that
[00:32:04] with all the parental damage phone
[00:32:06] someone made an online resource
[00:32:08] sore eyes
[00:32:10] that is so lame
[00:32:12] yeah there you go
[00:32:14] that's the epitome of a dad joke
[00:32:16] so those are going out to
[00:32:18] Mike wherever you are
[00:32:20] alright cool dad jokes are over
[00:32:28] hey what's that sound?
[00:32:30] it must be time for the pop culture segment
[00:32:32] with Mike and Stomp
[00:32:38] anything good to happen with pop culture?
[00:32:40] I had listed
[00:32:42] this game that I really don't want to talk about
[00:32:44] but I'll provide the link
[00:32:46] it's called Summit the Board Game
[00:32:48] it's actually like a
[00:32:50] Dungeons and Dragons type of role playing game
[00:32:52] but it's all mountaineering
[00:32:54] and climbing
[00:32:56] and it's as in depth
[00:32:58] and intense as like
[00:33:00] Dungeons and Dragons it's insane
[00:33:02] but I really can't do it justice
[00:33:04] so I'll just give you the link there
[00:33:06] uh
[00:33:08] Mrs Stomp is chomping at the bit
[00:33:10] tonight is what? Tuesday?
[00:33:12] yeah tonight's Tuesday
[00:33:14] recording this early this week
[00:33:16] and she's waiting for 6.30
[00:33:18] they're releasing the new Joker
[00:33:20] trailer for the Joker part 2
[00:33:22] with Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix
[00:33:24] so that should be pretty wild
[00:33:26] I like him
[00:33:28] the first one is great
[00:33:30] that dude is going to ask man I like him
[00:33:32] he's done a lot of different
[00:33:34] he kills it he's good
[00:33:36] yeah he's really good
[00:33:38] so that's coming out soon
[00:33:40] and I don't know you guys what been watching
[00:33:42] anything Eric you've been out hiking
[00:33:44] you don't have time for it
[00:33:46] no I do at night though I chill at night
[00:33:48] I love Kirby enthusiasm
[00:33:50] oh you've been watching
[00:33:52] I'm a sign fold guy so I've been watching
[00:33:54] yeah yeah
[00:33:56] I've not seen that yet
[00:33:58] and of course I've already seen Game of Thrones
[00:34:00] everybody's seen that
[00:34:02] you see the new series the House of Dragons
[00:34:04] I haven't but actually Chris said
[00:34:06] for me to watch that he said it was pretty good
[00:34:08] him and Tracy have been watching that
[00:34:10] Game of Thrones?
[00:34:12] you gotta give it a little bit
[00:34:14] you get hooked
[00:34:16] just literally yesterday Eric
[00:34:18] I was watching Hardhome and Battle of the Basterds
[00:34:20] remember those two episodes
[00:34:22] where there's just huge battles
[00:34:24] with the White Walkers
[00:34:26] oh I know Arya Stark
[00:34:28] do you remember that one episode
[00:34:30] that I forget the guy's name
[00:34:32] Ramsey Bolton
[00:34:34] Ramsey, he is a yes
[00:34:36] I've seen him now I don't have to watch it
[00:34:38] yeah it's all good
[00:34:40] just take the mic off go home
[00:34:42] you're all set
[00:34:44] nice meeting you Dave
[00:34:46] so yeah that's it man
[00:34:48] I just finished Dark a little while ago
[00:34:50] I think it was the German
[00:34:52] sci-fi thing
[00:34:54] about time travel
[00:34:56] really?
[00:34:58] yeah it's basically like they find these
[00:35:00] bodies and then
[00:35:02] it builds around that
[00:35:04] and it's like this whole
[00:35:06] group of people that interact
[00:35:08] it's hard not to give it away
[00:35:10] through the explanation
[00:35:12] we already screwed it up for you
[00:35:14] there's no dogs in this one
[00:35:16] so in the end
[00:35:18] what happened
[00:35:20] it's really cool
[00:35:22] I don't even know how to explain it
[00:35:24] watch the first four or five episodes
[00:35:26] oh okay yeah I think it was going the next
[00:35:28] towards you like no
[00:35:30] wait how? what?
[00:35:32] and then at the end of your mind it's just
[00:35:34] it's really good for days you're walking
[00:35:36] around like six miles off trail
[00:35:38] crap you're thinking about it
[00:35:40] and you just keep walking
[00:35:42] oh wait where am I
[00:35:44] it's one of those
[00:35:46] I really enjoy it
[00:35:50] are you ready for Slasher's
[00:35:52] ear review
[00:35:56] that's cool
[00:35:58] hey
[00:36:00] I have a couple gear
[00:36:02] things that I found
[00:36:04] just the other day
[00:36:06] I was down at Eddie Bauer
[00:36:08] down at Tilton
[00:36:10] and this is
[00:36:12] I saw this on one of the racks actually
[00:36:14] looks like a handwoman
[00:36:16] check this out it's a
[00:36:18] rechargeable dual arc
[00:36:20] lighter with a cob light
[00:36:22] so the light there is the yellowish part
[00:36:25] if you look at the very top here
[00:36:27] it's a dual arc so it's electric
[00:36:29] it's an arc of electricity
[00:36:31] yeah
[00:36:33] like a taser
[00:36:35] pretty much
[00:36:37] low power
[00:36:39] I'm thinking it's a terrible idea to have my pocket
[00:36:41] I called 911 today
[00:36:43] I'm not kidding
[00:36:45] hello what's your emergency I'm like
[00:36:47] I don't know man
[00:36:49] why am I testicles talking to me
[00:36:51] it's a theme tonight everyone
[00:36:53] he's just talking about testicles
[00:36:55] no it's like
[00:36:57] no emergency it's a part
[00:36:59] I don't need to be down and out
[00:37:01] could you imagine zapping your testicles
[00:37:03] whole brush fire
[00:37:05] so the rated current is 300mA
[00:37:07] the light is
[00:37:09] 140 lumens which is not too bad
[00:37:11] and it's USB
[00:37:13] chargeable
[00:37:15] so it's a convenient on-the-go essential for night
[00:37:17] spent around the campfire
[00:37:19] I think it's pretty cool
[00:37:21] better than matches that's for sure
[00:37:23] yeah
[00:37:25] so I saw that and then I saw this one
[00:37:27] you guys might get a kick out of this
[00:37:29] second one it's called skunky wipes
[00:37:31] I could imagine what that's for
[00:37:33] so it might be a good thing for backpackers
[00:37:35] and through hikers let me open it up here for us
[00:37:37] I'm as scared as I am curious
[00:37:39] yeah me too
[00:37:41] skunky wipes
[00:37:43] yeah and I defends which end
[00:37:45] skunky
[00:37:47] skunky wipes
[00:37:49] there we go
[00:37:51] disposable rinse free bathing sponge wipes
[00:37:53] bathing sponge wipes
[00:37:55] so it just add water
[00:37:57] it lathers up
[00:37:59] and then you scrub and dry with no sticky residue
[00:38:01] cleans without a shower
[00:38:03] just add water
[00:38:05] lather scrubs and dry
[00:38:07] so it's like it's literally like
[00:38:09] just a little clean wipe
[00:38:11] you know what I like about it it's light
[00:38:13] because it probably weighs nothing
[00:38:15] it's no water so you can backpack it
[00:38:17] disposable is a good call I don't know how you'd reuse it
[00:38:19] well don't carry it and jump on the river
[00:38:21] bring some soap and do the same thing
[00:38:23] I like the different categories they list too
[00:38:25] it's got so much gym
[00:38:27] so check it out smell funky get skunky
[00:38:29] 60 second shower just add water
[00:38:31] rinse free bath sponges
[00:38:33] so yeah there we go
[00:38:35] this is gym elder care
[00:38:37] kids and more
[00:38:39] what's the more
[00:38:41] that's what's got me
[00:38:43] it's a product so you know they want to
[00:38:45] put as much crap as they can on the sticker to catch your eye
[00:38:47] what else you gotta say
[00:38:49] your car maybe
[00:38:51] I don't want to know
[00:38:53] nope we're gonna stop right there
[00:38:55] alright you guys mind if I do an advertiser here
[00:38:59] I gotta blast through these so
[00:39:01] alright first one
[00:39:03] actually you guys might want to comment on this
[00:39:05] so we do have the 48 peaks

[00:39:09] for a quick little interview but

[00:39:25] the annual hiker celebration will take place
[00:39:27] Saturday June 8th at Reckless

[00:39:35] like that weekend or any day you want
[00:39:37] no fundraising minimum is required
[00:39:39] but those who raise $100
[00:39:41] will receive this year's performance grade
[00:39:43] purple t-shirt
[00:39:45] so let's turn the white mountains purple to end
[00:39:47] Alzheimer's visit

[00:40:15] who wants to hike with guys Dave shits in the woods
[00:40:17] but I got skunky wipes
[00:40:19] so
[00:40:21] you're allowed

[00:40:25] I'll tell when
[00:40:27] that'd be cool
[00:40:29] he's okay he checks out
[00:40:31] you imagine you and I hiking together
[00:40:33] I can now
[00:40:35] I can imagine that
[00:40:37] like for real you know
[00:40:39] we could be more opposites in general but I think
[00:40:41] we'd kill it on the trailer off the trailer
[00:40:43] yeah I'm trying to
[00:40:45] draw a comparison with like a supergroup that would
[00:40:47] mm don't say millie millie
[00:40:49] now he's to you guys
[00:40:51] cause they didn't even sing
[00:40:53] we're real this is the real thing right here
[00:40:55] it could be the Crosby stills and no Nash
[00:40:57] and young
[00:40:59] yeah now he's out yeah he's done
[00:41:01] oh my god it's too funny
[00:41:03] alright so there you go you're invited
[00:41:05] I won't be doing anything that day
[00:41:07] I have to do the music at the event
[00:41:09] at reckless I'll have to catch up on the dates
[00:41:11] not yeah
[00:41:13] even if I just walk behind you guys
[00:41:15] I don't have to be in the group
[00:41:17] carry my backpack
[00:41:19] I'm gonna be busy shaking hands hand
[00:41:21] alright jump doing a headstand again
[00:41:23] I could be like his helper
[00:41:25] well let me make it last year should go hurt
[00:41:27] so I jumped in you know
[00:41:29] that's right yeah last year was a wild year
[00:41:31] yeah busy summer very whole brettan woods thing
[00:41:33] yeah that event there Emily yeah
[00:41:35] yeah yeah yeah yeah it was a lot
[00:41:37] wow show was
[00:41:39] alright well let's see what else we have
[00:41:41] so coffee donations you can donate to the podcast
[00:41:43] if you want to help us pay the bills
[00:41:45] we have a couple this week carry barrel
[00:41:47] donated three coffees
[00:41:49] and then Jen Kunze
[00:41:51] Kunze
[00:41:53] one of the other donated five coffees
[00:41:55] and this this person is going to be coming on
[00:41:57] one of the future episodes
[00:41:59] have you met her yeah
[00:42:02] okay so she's a chef
[00:42:04] in Antarctica Dave I don't know if you know this
[00:42:06] I'm just trying to get past who he doesn't know
[00:42:08] like we just
[00:42:10] see that squirrel out there I know him
[00:42:12] that's Rocky that's red over there
[00:42:14] that guy is red yeah he's got a nut allergy
[00:42:16] which is horrible you know
[00:42:18] for a squirrel but he
[00:42:20] he's a good guy yeah
[00:42:22] so how I want well we'll talk on our hike
[00:42:24] and we go on uh yeah yeah yeah
[00:42:26] so when she's out in Antarctica
[00:42:28] so she's a chef she cooks out there
[00:42:30] so maybe we can have her
[00:42:32] chat about that so cool thank you Jen
[00:42:34] and thank you Carrie it's super super cool
[00:42:36] and uh we have another quick

[00:43:10] I knew we should have gone left back there
[00:43:12] stop don't worry
[00:43:14] I know it's this way I've got a feeling in my gut
[00:43:16] uh are you sure you're not about to have a bowel
[00:43:18] emergency
[00:43:20] uh totally we got this
[00:43:22] but I just blew out my hip
[00:43:24] fell down that gully with my 40 year old
[00:43:26] micro spikes suck it up stomp
[00:43:28] it's 4 p.m. we're at 3500 feet
[00:43:30] we got 9 miles back to the parking lot
[00:43:32] your leg may be broken
[00:43:34] we got no cell connection
[00:43:36] and we can't feel our fingers
[00:43:38] but we're finishing all of my list tonight
[00:43:40] by the way I need some water
[00:43:42] I'm empty I would
[00:43:44] if I could see what I'm doing
[00:43:46] but my headlamp batteries are dead
[00:43:48] you gotta be kidding me what a chump
[00:43:50] this is the last time I hike with you
[00:43:52] whatever mister
[00:43:54] do you know me I have a podcast
[00:43:56] whatever
[00:44:00] let's find out what Mike and Stomp
[00:44:02] have been hiking
[00:44:06] recent hikes
[00:44:08] anybody
[00:44:10] who's first Dave Eric
[00:44:12] I don't get out much
[00:44:14] actually why don't you talk about
[00:44:16] I just got back to us
[00:44:18] just up the road at cone mountain today
[00:44:20] so I was gonna do cone
[00:44:22] cone mountain so it goes
[00:44:24] I parked at the Welsh Dickie
[00:44:26] and then I just basically you instead of going up
[00:44:28] either trail you just stay on the bike path
[00:44:30] and then you hit the ledges and you kinda arque your way
[00:44:32] around the ledges
[00:44:34] split a couple ledges I didn't need to
[00:44:36] came back down followed that up and around
[00:44:38] big six foot Karen at the top
[00:44:40] gorgeous view
[00:44:42] really gorgeous view
[00:44:44] yeah it's an amazing have you hiked that one Eric
[00:44:46] I think on uh like he was saying
[00:44:48] I think I did that years ago with Steven Gwen
[00:44:50] oh probably yeah yeah yeah
[00:44:52] because we did bushwhack we even went to uh
[00:44:54] from Welsh Dickie
[00:44:56] is it uh hogback
[00:44:58] yes yeah off of
[00:45:00] you get to it from
[00:45:02] I don't remember it was so many years ago
[00:45:04] and actually we got to Tecumseh as well
[00:45:06] yeah grant a verse basically
[00:45:08] probably it probably was
[00:45:10] we were talking seven or eight years ago
[00:45:12] we used to do all those crazy things
[00:45:14] I gotta say that whole stretch from
[00:45:16] Tecumseh, Boss, Green Mountain
[00:45:18] all the way down to Welsh Dickie and then
[00:45:20] Hazleton Brook is just
[00:45:22] to the east
[00:45:24] there's so much in and around there it's unbelievable
[00:45:26] it's really untouched
[00:45:28] absolutely and true
[00:45:30] cause you don't see a lot of you won't see anybody out there
[00:45:32] you don't see anybody but Bear
[00:45:34] I was last time I was out there trying to do Hazleton
[00:45:36] funny oh yeah sorry
[00:45:38] sitting on the top of Cone
[00:45:40] by myself bushwhacked up
[00:45:42] because nobody goes up there
[00:45:44] not quite on the Cone
[00:45:46] I really like Dave
[00:45:48] better acoustics
[00:45:50] if you use a Cone
[00:45:52] so I'm sitting there and all of a sudden I hear
[00:45:54] great job buddy and I'm like that does not match up
[00:45:56] with my conscience that's not my conscious voice
[00:45:58] and he never calls me buddy so I'm like
[00:46:00] shit someone's up here
[00:46:02] I'm like who is up here and sure enough
[00:46:04] I could hear someone coming so I just yelled
[00:46:06] I'm like hey I'm up on the summit heads up
[00:46:08] and a guy came out we started talking
[00:46:10] and that and I was like I just wanted to give you a heads up
[00:46:12] cause when you're out bushwhacking
[00:46:14] those things are either you know finding somebody
[00:46:16] or being found
[00:46:18] you know
[00:46:20] so that threw me
[00:46:22] gorgeous area and then I was trying to go down to
[00:46:24] now I gotta look this up cause
[00:46:26] I'll say it wrong
[00:46:28] but there's another peak that's a little further
[00:46:30] out that I wanted to but I ran out of time
[00:46:32] what if it's the one I hit
[00:46:34] it was brown ash swamp
[00:46:36] brown swamp ass
[00:46:38] not swamp ass
[00:46:40] because that is actually on another hiking list
[00:46:42] from New Hampshire
[00:46:44] there is a new Hampshire hiking list
[00:46:46] it is the New Hampshire
[00:46:48] inappropriate 69
[00:46:50] and you may not have heard of it but it's names like that
[00:46:52] that are technically inappropriate
[00:46:54] I'm really surprised I haven't heard of that
[00:46:56] and it comes with a patch
[00:46:58] that a friend of mine, Nicole Wilson,
[00:47:00] she made the patch and everything
[00:47:02] and they are names that
[00:47:04] they can go in certain categories
[00:47:06] I gotta keep it clean cause I know there's a smaller person
[00:47:08] that hikes that's younger
[00:47:10] don't worry
[00:47:12] we already kind of
[00:47:14] the Mexican
[00:47:16] the Mexican Eclipse
[00:47:18] is that a testicle
[00:47:20] I don't know who I just said
[00:47:22] Mike's definitely fired me
[00:47:24] I'm history
[00:47:26] it would be good sailing equipment
[00:47:28] actually
[00:47:30] you and I have taken over
[00:47:32] we just gotta get rid of stump
[00:47:34] rented stiffy
[00:47:36] so it was gonna go down
[00:47:38] New Hampshire inappropriate 69
[00:47:40] it comes with a patch
[00:47:42] it is a legitimate hiking list
[00:47:44] yes it's funny
[00:47:46] running into a couple roadblocks
[00:47:48] with property
[00:47:50] some of the names people do
[00:47:52] but they are out there
[00:47:54] tumbled down dick
[00:47:56] Mount Tug
[00:47:58] oh dude that's hilarious
[00:48:00] there's a lot of them that are on there
[00:48:02] the Hancocks
[00:48:04] white faces
[00:48:07] the whole list is out there
[00:48:09] I don't want to go through the whole list
[00:48:11] there is an Instagram account
[00:48:13] the New Hampshire inappropriate 69
[00:48:15] the Facebook account you need to
[00:48:17] request permission
[00:48:19] because we don't want any creepers
[00:48:21] we just want hikers
[00:48:23] and it should be said that these are legitimate hikes
[00:48:25] there is
[00:48:27] a level of skill that is required
[00:48:29] so it is fun
[00:48:31] but there's a lot of very difficult mountains on this
[00:48:33] to hike
[00:48:35] if you are first you might get something special
[00:48:37] that's a great idea
[00:48:39] you don't want to finish too early
[00:48:41] that was good
[00:48:43] I'm just saying
[00:48:45] so whoever the first finisher is
[00:48:47] you got to have it in your shirt
[00:48:49] or whatever
[00:48:51] that's so cool
[00:48:53] alright well uh so you did cone
[00:48:55] yep
[00:48:57] last bushweck
[00:48:59] we did it from Smotsbrook
[00:49:01] it's called sacrum peak
[00:49:03] well that's up on the acting line
[00:49:05] that's what I was talking about earlier
[00:49:07] you can see it
[00:49:09] when you do the Jennings and noon sandwich dome peak
[00:49:11] it's either Jennings or
[00:49:13] noon that you're on
[00:49:15] and you look to your right
[00:49:17] and you're like what is that
[00:49:19] Jennings
[00:49:21] so we ended up going to Smotsbrook
[00:49:23] checking it out
[00:49:25] and it's beautiful
[00:49:27] no footprints
[00:49:29] that's my goal
[00:49:31] it is, it's beautiful
[00:49:33] and I think you can climb it too
[00:49:35] it looks like a climbing route
[00:49:37] remote broadcast
[00:49:39] remote broadcast
[00:49:41] right
[00:49:43] when you're coming down Smartsbrook
[00:49:45] from sandwich
[00:49:47] back to Smartsbrook trailhead
[00:49:49] you can get glimpses of the cliff wall
[00:49:51] you can
[00:49:53] you have to actually hike past it
[00:49:55] about almost half a mile
[00:49:57] to go around it
[00:49:59] we did it in the
[00:50:01] so we want to go back of course it was like
[00:50:03] beginning of snow season
[00:50:05] it reminds me of mount height
[00:50:07] but it's even tighter
[00:50:09] it's tighter
[00:50:11] 360
[00:50:13] I want to say it's the size of this room
[00:50:15] I swear to God
[00:50:17] there's a couple of little sections you can hang out
[00:50:19] and what I like about stuff like that
[00:50:21] like you were saying height you can't do this button
[00:50:23] this one
[00:50:25] I like the sections where you can throw a tent up there
[00:50:27] on the rocks on the summit
[00:50:29] but you got some woods behind that you can hang out
[00:50:31] you can even let a fire, not the can
[00:50:33] or what should be doing that
[00:50:35] with the new lighter
[00:50:37] and the new wipes
[00:50:39] bring the wipes
[00:50:41] smell great
[00:50:43] it's on
[00:50:45] you and I, what are we going to do
[00:50:47] we're going to skunk wipe
[00:50:49] get some fires going
[00:50:51] do some tick checking
[00:50:53] check for ticks
[00:50:55] come on
[00:50:57] what's going
[00:50:59] I'm not passing light petting with you Dave
[00:51:01] very light
[00:51:03] I can arrest the beard you got going on
[00:51:05] but I'm doing, I don't know what he's got in mind
[00:51:07] just enough so the eclipse is below
[00:51:09] above the horizon
[00:51:11] that the eclipse
[00:51:13] wow
[00:51:15] too funny
[00:51:17] alright so that's your homework Dave
[00:51:19] you gotta do that whole line
[00:51:21] just bag like bald mountain acty on
[00:51:23] there's like 50 bald mountains
[00:51:25] but yeah that's
[00:51:27] that's off of
[00:51:29] the kinsman trill
[00:51:31] that's another nice spot too
[00:51:33] that would have been cool for the eclipse
[00:51:35] absolutely
[00:51:37] when you get 90
[00:51:39] something percent that's the only thing
[00:51:41] you wouldn't see it in totality
[00:51:43] I start here
[00:51:45] it's probably like 90
[00:51:47] still pretty cool
[00:51:49] there's a ton of peaks in this area
[00:51:51] so you guys done car
[00:51:53] car mountain
[00:51:55] I don't think I've done that one yet
[00:51:57] is that out of 52?
[00:51:59] no definitely
[00:52:01] 3 ponds trailhead
[00:52:03] by rumney
[00:52:05] or from Ellsworth hill
[00:52:07] wow okay cool
[00:52:09] alright
[00:52:11] for the 500 you can get the kineos
[00:52:13] you can get
[00:52:15] two other peaks but car
[00:52:17] is a viewless summit
[00:52:19] it's a tower foundation at the top
[00:52:21] and it's like 3500 feet
[00:52:23] there's two ways to go about it
[00:52:25] so you can go from 3 ponds
[00:52:27] you guys gotta check out this whole area
[00:52:29] it's absolutely beautiful
[00:52:31] 2.5 miles from 3 ponds
[00:52:33] but there is this old almost deserted
[00:52:35] approach from the Warren side
[00:52:37] which is 3 miles
[00:52:39] and I got to do that
[00:52:41] Saturday or Sunday
[00:52:43] I don't even remember anymore
[00:52:45] but yeah snowshoes the whole way
[00:52:47] so you go to the fish stinson
[00:52:49] stinson around it
[00:52:51] past that
[00:52:53] so you've got rumney
[00:52:55] rocks that climb in place
[00:52:57] you've got that rattlesnake
[00:52:59] which you can climb
[00:53:01] and then further on
[00:53:03] you can take a right
[00:53:05] and get down to 3 ponds
[00:53:07] which is actually the same road that you would take the stinson
[00:53:09] so it's just a little further down
[00:53:11] it's a trailhead on the left
[00:53:13] yeah for sure
[00:53:15] so that's that area
[00:53:17] but for this other approach
[00:53:19] car mountain trail it's in Warren
[00:53:21] it's by the fishing game hatchery
[00:53:23] in Warren it's behind that
[00:53:25] and I'd heard rumors that it's like
[00:53:27] I don't know might as well be abandoned
[00:53:29] at this point
[00:53:31] it still has a white mountain as before
[00:53:33] a sign, car mountain trail
[00:53:35] lot of clear cutting like the first half mile
[00:53:37] so ended up
[00:53:39] making it maybe like
[00:53:41] 80% of the way up
[00:53:43] making trail the whole way up
[00:53:45] it's the northern side
[00:53:47] it was pretty wild like foot deep
[00:53:49] the whole way
[00:53:51] that's where the car hood is
[00:53:53] car hood and car mountain
[00:53:55] there you go maybe that's the whole shtick
[00:53:57] yeah
[00:53:59] check it out it was pretty cool
[00:54:01] but I need some love
[00:54:03] I'm shocked that it's still
[00:54:05] yeah, it's a good question
[00:54:07] you guys should do
[00:54:09] as for the podcast
[00:54:11] which is Dr. Trill
[00:54:13] Dave's can not me
[00:54:15] I'm too busy but Dave
[00:54:17] he's got the wipes
[00:54:19] if he gets swamped
[00:54:21] we're gonna rename it to the smell good trail
[00:54:25] yeah, I'll take it under consideration
[00:54:41] it's time for
[00:54:43] Slasher's
[00:54:45] guest of the week
[00:54:47] very cool
[00:54:49] very cool
[00:54:51] so let's
[00:54:53] start with you Eric
[00:54:55] just a little bit more about you
[00:54:57] and what you've been up to lately
[00:54:59] you've been on before
[00:55:01] yeah, that was awesome
[00:55:03] thanks for having me on
[00:55:05] yeah, you bet, thanks for coming over
[00:55:07] absolutely
[00:55:09] I live a long, you know, pretty far away
[00:55:11] yeah, what's been going on over the last
[00:55:13] several months
[00:55:15] nothing really
[00:55:17] just finishing up the cabin
[00:55:19] got the wood stove in
[00:55:21] as you all know I built a log cabin
[00:55:23] had it log cabin built in Thornton
[00:55:25] so now it's gonna be onto a landscape
[00:55:27] getting some trees
[00:55:29] and getting a driveway and things like that
[00:55:31] yeah, so you basically got it up
[00:55:33] and running in the fall before winter came in
[00:55:35] yeah, about October was finished
[00:55:37] so it's been a running hostel since then pretty much
[00:55:39] yeah
[00:55:41] that's cool
[00:55:43] that's been pretty awesome
[00:55:45] but besides that and hiking
[00:55:47] almost four or five, six days a week
[00:55:49] sometimes every day
[00:55:51] but nothing crazy, no goals
[00:55:53] the other thing I have been doing lately
[00:55:55] is going to the Adirondacks
[00:55:57] so I started out in those, those are nice
[00:55:59] real pretty and I've learned something
[00:56:01] like the trails there are broken out
[00:56:03] and you wear snowshoes
[00:56:05] a whole different ballgame up there
[00:56:07] what do you mean by that?
[00:56:09] if you do not have your snowshoes on your pack
[00:56:11] or you're not wearing them, they find you
[00:56:13] and say go home
[00:56:15] wow, interesting
[00:56:17] trails are literally like a highway there
[00:56:19] I've been exploring out there a little bit more
[00:56:21] and I'm gonna go back
[00:56:23] as soon as I put some grass in
[00:56:25] and finish the landscape into the cabin
[00:56:27] I'll start heading that way and hitting those mountains
[00:56:29] I do want to finish them this year though
[00:56:31] I want to do them all, not for a patch or anything
[00:56:33] they're pretty impressive from what I've seen
[00:56:35] beautiful, absolutely beautiful
[00:56:37] it takes a long time to get there
[00:56:39] that's far, over four and a half hours away
[00:56:41] a lot of long approaches I hear
[00:56:43] the approaches are very long to get
[00:56:45] not the ones I did so far
[00:56:47] I just did the smaller ones because I'm just new at it there
[00:56:49] I did porter, cascade
[00:56:51] giant, big slide, macomb slide
[00:56:53] actually
[00:56:55] I did white faces
[00:56:57] that was like my only winter at a rondeck
[00:56:59] are they similar?
[00:57:01] different, how would they like, comparatively?
[00:57:03] for here?
[00:57:05] I can't really tell because it was covered in snow
[00:57:07] but all I know is as far as trail conditions
[00:57:09] it was literally a highway
[00:57:11] you could almost ride a bicycle down
[00:57:13] it's nothing like here
[00:57:15] because here it's post-old to hell
[00:57:17] not there, they literally will find you
[00:57:19] and say go home
[00:57:21] so who will, rangers?
[00:57:23] there's a ranger station
[00:57:25] there's a few of them I guess
[00:57:27] but the only one I went to in the winter
[00:57:29] I didn't see them there that day
[00:57:31] mostly in the weekends they're there
[00:57:33] right at before you even start hiking
[00:57:35] and that's where all the trails start
[00:57:37] so it's almost like a stew it's called
[00:57:39] are they out there looking at people?
[00:57:41] yeah, that's what I've been told
[00:57:43] they have like snowshoe speed traps
[00:57:45] just come up behind the tree
[00:57:47] excuse me there
[00:57:49] how fast are you going?
[00:57:51] you see you're not wearing your snowshoes
[00:57:53] smell alcohol on your butt?
[00:57:55] why don't you pull over here
[00:57:57] can you imagine that?
[00:57:59] I can now
[00:58:01] imagine if there were certain people's backpack for alcohol
[00:58:03] the white mountains would be empty
[00:58:05] you'd be a lot less post-olds
[00:58:07] yeah, it's true you got a point
[00:58:09] well I mean if you think about it
[00:58:11] just safety wise post-olds can screw people up
[00:58:13] I put it up on Facebook before
[00:58:15] and had debates and people just
[00:58:17] you get hung so it's not even worth it
[00:58:19] but I am a
[00:58:21] I'm an advocate for wearing them
[00:58:23] when you need them
[00:58:25] I'm not embodying my choice
[00:58:27] but I was curious
[00:58:29] have you had a lot of call-outs, a lot of rescues
[00:58:31] for people that rolled ankles from post-olds
[00:58:33] if they were the ones wearing snowshoes
[00:58:35] because typically you can kind of go over
[00:58:37] there's a certain season where post-olds are just
[00:58:39] they're canyons it doesn't matter what you're wearing
[00:58:41] you're falling in
[00:58:43] but I was just curious
[00:58:45] to me I wear them before they come after me
[00:58:47] I wear my snowshoes everybody
[00:58:49] it's going to be okay
[00:58:51] I was going to give you a fine right now
[00:58:53] I've had a few
[00:58:55] winter is an anomaly though when it comes to search and rescue
[00:58:57] because there's all kinds of strange things that happen
[00:58:59] you get a lot of experienced people
[00:59:01] that are probably wearing all the right gear
[00:59:03] but just like
[00:59:05] make the wrong step and end up sliding
[00:59:07] that's what happened to me
[00:59:09] I want to say that
[00:59:11] was it the Avalon
[00:59:13] rescue was probably
[00:59:15] a lower leg injury
[00:59:17] the most recent one
[00:59:19] so it can happen for sure
[00:59:21] it's a whole weird
[00:59:23] variety of incidents
[00:59:25] that can happen over the winter
[00:59:27] it's hard too because today
[00:59:29] having snowshoes on would have killed me
[00:59:31] because of the slush factor
[00:59:33] coming down off the ledges
[00:59:35] it'd be skiing
[00:59:37] same thing we did today
[00:59:39] we had them on going up, took them off going down
[00:59:41] so you had better traction
[00:59:43] like you said it was way too slushy
[00:59:45] I ditched them early and I was like
[00:59:47] I need grip I can't
[00:59:49] yeah
[00:59:51] and this winter what do you think
[00:59:53] it hasn't been as bad as other winters
[00:59:55] it's like last year I believe
[00:59:57] soon as April hit, boom you got a couple of snowstorms
[00:59:59] it melts quick though which is good
[01:00:01] but I get the impression that the monorail
[01:00:03] this year is not going to be as severe
[01:00:05] as prior years
[01:00:07] but it does stick around for a while
[01:00:09] as we all know
[01:00:11] a lot of people go south
[01:00:13] they just stay, not me
[01:00:15] but a lot of people do and that's fine
[01:00:17] especially the bell naps
[01:00:19] just to stay away for a month or so
[01:00:21] stay away from the whites because of that
[01:00:23] did the Adirondacks close trails during mud season
[01:00:25] they're open?
[01:00:27] yes but we all know that
[01:00:29] but no Adirondacks I heard it is
[01:00:31] I have not been there in the spring
[01:00:33] I heard it's horrifying
[01:00:35] like knee deep mud
[01:00:37] I got some friends that I hike with
[01:00:39] you wait till you go out there in the spring
[01:00:41] man it's crazy but they do not close them
[01:00:43] Vermont's muddy
[01:00:45] like Gilligan's Island quick sand
[01:00:47] I was out there right at the end of
[01:00:49] mud season it was still muddy
[01:00:53] what about
[01:00:55] shifting gears a little bit
[01:00:57] you did your, what was it 100?
[01:00:59] summits of Mount Washington?
[01:01:01] 150
[01:01:03] it's not a lot though
[01:01:05] I'm just a little peon
[01:01:07] but I'm up to like 160
[01:01:09] 160
[01:01:11] I was just up there
[01:01:13] 3-4 days ago I just do it for the exercise
[01:01:15] though
[01:01:17] you know I don't list anything
[01:01:19] I don't write anything down
[01:01:21] I don't know how many miles I could kill
[01:01:23] I just go up to hike so I can eat whatever I want at night
[01:01:25] that's the only reason why I'm here
[01:01:27] he's the Jenny Craig of mountaineering
[01:01:29] hey that's an idea
[01:01:31] he's got his points
[01:01:33] now that I've got the cabin I can have
[01:01:35] this weight loss thing everybody can come by
[01:01:37] and I can take them hiking, stay the night
[01:01:39] sweet weight loss
[01:01:41] I just sat at this together
[01:01:43] don't drag me into this
[01:01:45] I need someone to help me
[01:01:47] I'm already carrying your pack for the 48
[01:01:49] this is true but I'm light padding
[01:01:51] I'm gonna hook you up come on take care of it
[01:01:55] alright so no list nothing serious
[01:01:57] no big ambitious things
[01:01:59] so we did talk about your
[01:02:01] efforts with adaptive
[01:02:03] what's going on with that
[01:02:05] I volunteer like a couple days a week
[01:02:07] it's awesome man it makes you feel real good
[01:02:09] you just to see them smile
[01:02:11] it's something special you gotta do it
[01:02:13] to see it it's pretty awesome
[01:02:15] so like this Saturday we're gonna take Sasha
[01:02:17] and her mother is amazing what a doll
[01:02:19] she actually worked for adaptive
[01:02:21] this time was tough though
[01:02:23] there was like one ski not a wheel
[01:02:25] this was a ski and it's got one ski
[01:02:27] on the middle of this adaptive wheelchair
[01:02:29] and you've got someone in the back
[01:02:31] and there's a brake so if you go down here
[01:02:33] you can stop it and then not on the ski
[01:02:35] but when it has the wheel on it
[01:02:37] yeah and you gotta like just go for a mile
[01:02:39] and a half or whatever the you know whatever it is
[01:02:41] what's the hardest thing you've done with
[01:02:43] one of the adaptive gliding
[01:02:45] really really like post-tolerant
[01:02:47] we couldn't wear the snowshoes because my snowshoes
[01:02:49] are in front of the thing we have to take them off
[01:02:51] I'm like a foot deep oh it was
[01:02:53] it was really hard oh no another one we did
[01:02:55] though with Nate runs it
[01:02:57] Nate and Kelly they're awesome people and
[01:02:59] where are they out of Franconia
[01:03:01] Franconia yeah yeah so as soon as
[01:03:03] you take that right there's a grocery store right there
[01:03:05] it's like right after that so
[01:03:07] we did it up the Flume Gorge
[01:03:09] up and down all those hills and like you know how people
[01:03:11] actually walk and that's hilly yeah
[01:03:13] it burns people out we have to do that
[01:03:15] the downs gotta be killer oh but we had
[01:03:17] that's where you have the brake so some
[01:03:19] on the ski I'm saying though he was with the ski
[01:03:21] they don't do that though but he does actually
[01:03:23] they do adaptive skiing though it's
[01:03:25] everything like gardening skiing kayaking
[01:03:27] but we typically play bocci ball at
[01:03:29] Dow Park and it's wicked competitive
[01:03:31] it's the cutest thing it really is
[01:03:33] even I'm on the team you know it's great so
[01:03:35] he's on fan duel taking the over under
[01:03:37] oh it's awesome but honestly
[01:03:39] when you do something like that it makes
[01:03:41] you feel good you know it was so
[01:03:43] we are so privileged we really are
[01:03:45] so I love doing it you know yeah well said
[01:03:47] and I could do it I'd like to get a job
[01:03:49] there but it's not a profit so it's not like you know
[01:03:51] the hiring you know but interesting
[01:03:53] how they doing for gear and donations and stuff like that
[01:03:55] that they from what I understand great
[01:03:57] I mean actually they had a bunch of
[01:03:59] snow shoes the other day we had about
[01:04:01] 10 people that were volunteering
[01:04:03] and it's all they had a brand new snow shoes
[01:04:05] and everything so I mean it's nice
[01:04:07] that they get you know the people do donate
[01:04:09] you know but I mean it's skis
[01:04:11] and snow shoes and spikes
[01:04:13] they have all the gear you know
[01:04:15] that's cool yeah it is
[01:04:17] the adaptive community is pretty prolific
[01:04:19] up here I mean there it's all over the place
[01:04:21] ski mountains different tunnels
[01:04:23] it's everywhere it's great it's really good to see
[01:04:25] it is yeah and actually when that last time I took
[01:04:27] athletes last year up what do you call
[01:04:29] that one across from Canon that small one I've done it
[01:04:31] a million times everybody's done it the small
[01:04:33] artist bluff artist when I was on artist bluff
[01:04:35] Nate was actually coming down on the adaptive
[01:04:37] with it with an athlete on the ski
[01:04:39] coming down so we filmed it
[01:04:41] can actually see him you know and they love
[01:04:43] it man the excitement in their face when
[01:04:45] they're skiing and you're taking them hiking
[01:04:47] and but you know all that they just light
[01:04:49] up you know especially Sasha when you go a little
[01:04:51] faster she gets this little excitement
[01:04:53] you know it's awesome such a ripple effect
[01:04:55] too for the family everybody around
[01:04:57] usually just so much positive yeah yeah
[01:04:59] absolutely you know and a lot of
[01:05:01] times they know that their home and this is
[01:05:03] there you know one or two days a week to actually
[01:05:05] get out and hang out with other people and see
[01:05:07] the nature and then they love it you're
[01:05:09] usually on the bike paths and things like that
[01:05:11] but we do take them up small and is Frank we
[01:05:13] go to Franconia too this Franconia field where
[01:05:15] they fly the planes so behind oh yeah
[01:05:17] sure I don't know the area too well but you
[01:05:19] don't behind there we do some hiking on the
[01:05:21] kinsman's the back that's right exactly yeah
[01:05:23] for once yes off 116 yeah
[01:05:25] so yeah now what about isn't there
[01:05:27] an ascent to the top of Mount
[01:05:29] Washington every year a road yeah
[01:05:31] yeah there is it's called a sunrise
[01:05:33] ascent ASPNC okay sunrise ascent
[01:05:35] this will be my 30th doing it so anybody
[01:05:37] interested you can volunteer you can sign
[01:05:39] up it can reach out to me
[01:05:41] yeah Nate also and Kelly run that
[01:05:43] cool okay and it's usually
[01:05:45] the end of July into August
[01:05:47] now it's on a Sunday how's that work
[01:05:49] do you everybody meets around two three
[01:05:51] in the morning this 10th setup at
[01:05:53] the base of Mount Washington auto
[01:05:55] road yeah and there's different teams
[01:05:57] I'm on team shock this will be my third
[01:05:59] year probably on team shock so
[01:06:01] yeah you just basically it's another
[01:06:03] specialized wheelchair one in the back
[01:06:05] one in the front it's I call it lead
[01:06:07] bull I had a strap around me so I'm
[01:06:09] actually pulling the cart okay so how
[01:06:11] many people around this car so that's
[01:06:13] two one in the front one in the back
[01:06:15] and sometimes two on each side pulling
[01:06:17] a strap because you're going up the
[01:06:19] auto road you're talking oh yeah
[01:06:21] stop there's a cut there's like two
[01:06:23] points we just stop off get a snack and
[01:06:25] you know we're flatten out a little bit
[01:06:27] but then we get to the summit of Mount
[01:06:29] Washington we actually carry it up to
[01:06:31] the summit and we all take a picture
[01:06:33] and then we take a van down so
[01:06:35] oh yeah I was going to ask yeah so
[01:06:37] I've summited Mount Washington
[01:06:39] 162 times but I can only count
[01:06:41] 160 because we had to take the van
[01:06:43] down that's actually scary that sucks
[01:06:45] I had a guy Steve last year he was
[01:06:47] driving me down and I can you go
[01:06:49] Eric I'm going eight miles an hour I'm
[01:06:51] like go to four this sucks I'm scared
[01:06:53] if everybody knows me heights I'm not a
[01:06:55] fan I'll hike up anything I'll do a
[01:06:57] headstand anyway but if you put me in a vehicle
[01:06:59] I don't go over 60 and I don't like heights
[01:07:01] but you get on slides yeah
[01:07:03] yeah but you did a handstand on
[01:07:05] boncliffe right in the snow with
[01:07:07] snowshoes on yeah this is insane see I get
[01:07:09] sick I get nauseous sick at the edge
[01:07:11] stuff like that no that doesn't bother
[01:07:13] me too much now
[01:07:15] I know it doesn't get him on the couch
[01:07:17] you see that's why it's there I'm
[01:07:19] telling you yeah
[01:07:21] that is a well that it is a bottomless
[01:07:23] well then yeah
[01:07:25] that I tell you is awesome
[01:07:27] we still like I said we started on three
[01:07:29] three thirty in the morning and all the teams
[01:07:31] start and we all go up into the camaraderie
[01:07:33] is incredible and at the end of the day
[01:07:35] there's a cookout down below and we all hang out with the athletes
[01:07:37] and yeah it's just it's fun it's really fun
[01:07:39] you get to meet all the new people too
[01:07:41] but it does put things in perspective how lucky
[01:07:43] we are unfortunate oh yeah have your health
[01:07:45] absolutely yeah you just said that the last
[01:07:47] episode like I'm just I thank God
[01:07:49] every time yeah every time I'm out there and thank you
[01:07:51] for my health I should be yeah absolutely
[01:07:53] yeah yeah because it doesn't last forever
[01:07:55] you know no nothing does no no we're
[01:07:57] only here for this little time so enjoy it
[01:07:59] be kind spread the spread the love
[01:08:01] spread the kindness stop you know
[01:08:03] just yeah yeah it's about
[01:08:05] I can't believe I'm sitting here with you two
[01:08:07] psychopaths wasting time right now doing this
[01:08:09] talking about I'm trying to find the tissues
[01:08:11] you too
[01:08:15] all right so we cover everything I mean
[01:08:17] what else is going on about it
[01:08:19] no I don't mean that
[01:08:21] he's gonna be talking to you know
[01:08:23] did you notice the gigantic bean bag
[01:08:25] I didn't notice that
[01:08:27] you touched that you'd be in trouble
[01:08:29] I'm not even looking at it
[01:08:31] are you getting ideas?
[01:08:33] nope I don't know
[01:08:35] alright well that goes over to you Dave
[01:08:37] so you're more of a bushwhacker by trade
[01:08:39] for now like I did the trails and
[01:08:41] kind of exhausted the list so to speak
[01:08:43] you know the 48s of 52s
[01:08:45] and all the numbers
[01:08:47] so I just kind of popped onto the 100
[01:08:49] started chipping away at those got a few of those
[01:08:51] left and then
[01:08:53] you can't necessarily
[01:08:55] but I'm not about to go hit some of those
[01:08:57] some of them are beasts for winter
[01:08:59] it's just not worth the efforts
[01:09:01] not comfortable doing some of those
[01:09:03] so I just kind of picking off the 500
[01:09:05] where are you now in terms of the 500
[01:09:07] today was a milestone today was 200
[01:09:09] awesome good for you man
[01:09:11] we got blocked last time private property
[01:09:13] rights are coming up more and more
[01:09:15] really you've noticed that?
[01:09:17] yep well you have to skirt a lot more
[01:09:19] and we were denied Melvin Mountain
[01:09:21] last week off of Orange by
[01:09:23] do you think it's because of the 500
[01:09:25] list that's aggravating
[01:09:27] homeowners and COVID
[01:09:29] oh because of the
[01:09:31] people had nothing to do they went out and they squatted
[01:09:33] they went out and camped in the woods for long periods of time
[01:09:35] they trashed it, they burned it
[01:09:37] they lit fires
[01:09:39] they had nothing to do
[01:09:41] so they all went out and just squatted and drove around
[01:09:43] people's land and the landowners get sick of it
[01:09:45] and a lot of these are like disconglomerates
[01:09:47] or LLCs that
[01:09:49] landowners pay them to put it in conservation
[01:09:51] it helps them on their taxes
[01:09:53] but when you don't use it for recreation
[01:09:55] you have to pay more in taxes
[01:09:57] and they're actually going to that extent
[01:09:59] to say we don't want it for recreation because
[01:10:01] people are trashing our land
[01:10:03] so they're actually posting signs and keeping people off
[01:10:05] and paying extra in taxes just so they don't get used
[01:10:07] for recreation
[01:10:09] which is a shame
[01:10:11] so yeah
[01:10:13] I chip away at it
[01:10:15] I get out where I can get out
[01:10:17] but I'm down for whatever
[01:10:19] I like to just hit stuff when people have cool hikes
[01:10:21] I love history
[01:10:23] I do
[01:10:25] my mind was so...
[01:10:27] it was the light petting that kind of got
[01:10:29] I don't even know if we're talking about miles
[01:10:31] I don't get out much
[01:10:33] I don't get out much
[01:10:35] and it's you
[01:10:37] you see you on the internet
[01:10:39] and I'm here with you now
[01:10:41] and he's hitting on me
[01:10:43] I don't even know what to do
[01:10:45] this doesn't happen again
[01:10:47] sorry to interrupt
[01:10:49] but
[01:10:51] so
[01:10:53] I like to get into the history
[01:10:55] stuff through a lot of mines
[01:10:57] a lot of old towns
[01:10:59] a lot of logging roads
[01:11:01] and then kind of weave it into different bush wax
[01:11:03] throw the pack on and take a hammock
[01:11:05] I love to just camp out in between
[01:11:07] have a night get up
[01:11:09] find moose bogs
[01:11:11] it's cool until they show up
[01:11:13] you're like oh god
[01:11:15] have you had luck finding moose?
[01:11:17] not necessarily, we just couple a nastream
[01:11:19] hopefully gonna go out this spring
[01:11:21] try to find some shed
[01:11:23] especially in that area
[01:11:25] this castle I gotta hit that one
[01:11:27] we've talked about it before
[01:11:29] but the 500 is based upon
[01:11:31] the foot prominence rule
[01:11:33] so basically a summit has to have 200 feet
[01:11:35] for it to count
[01:11:37] I don't know who came up with the list
[01:11:39] I know that there's an instagram group
[01:11:41] or a facebook
[01:11:43] maybe it's a dedicated website for the 500
[01:11:45] I use wild delis which is an app
[01:11:47] and I think it connects to all of them
[01:11:49] but I'm sure there's some differences
[01:11:51] I've got something to show you
[01:11:53] it's the cal topo as a 500
[01:11:55] I'll just see how they match up
[01:11:57] and some of them are
[01:11:59] they're just walks
[01:12:01] easy woods, you're up you're down
[01:12:03] and others are beatings
[01:12:05] there's something interesting
[01:12:07] spruce traps in the winter
[01:12:09] are you kidding me?
[01:12:11] this thing is like 1900 feet
[01:12:13] and you're struggling for a good hour
[01:12:15] to get through these spruce traps
[01:12:17] on the way down
[01:12:19] you can realize I could skirt it
[01:12:21] a lot of the bigger ones
[01:12:23] up in the whites have ledges
[01:12:25] you got one way in and one way out
[01:12:27] and up there you can go way around that way
[01:12:29] and come back
[01:12:31] speaking of that, not to interrupt
[01:12:33] did you see the movie they made about the whites
[01:12:35] that was not filmed in the whites?
[01:12:37] infinite storm
[01:12:39] did you see the spruce trap she fell in
[01:12:41] it's like 10-15 feet
[01:12:43] it's like an elevator shaft
[01:12:45] it just keeps going
[01:12:47] when swizer and I watched
[01:12:49] I sat there and laughed my ass off
[01:12:51] I've ever seen a mandoff fall off the bridge
[01:12:53] it keeps going
[01:12:55] Dave, the spruce trap is as high as this building
[01:12:57] was sitting in right now
[01:12:59] I'm not a big guy
[01:13:01] so I feel like spruce traps are big
[01:13:03] but it is a limit
[01:13:05] that was funny
[01:13:07] that was the one part of that movie
[01:13:09] that threw me off
[01:13:11] I could actually live with the views
[01:13:13] because it did resemble
[01:13:15] certain parts of the whites
[01:13:17] but the spruce trap got me
[01:13:19] I haven't seen that one yet
[01:13:21] it's a good comedy
[01:13:23] I can see it
[01:13:25] another spoiler
[01:13:27] we're killing it for you here
[01:13:29] he's never going to watch TV again
[01:13:31] now I'm afraid to hike
[01:13:33] wait till you hike with me
[01:13:37] what else is going on
[01:13:39] life is about to happen
[01:13:41] I've had a lot of time
[01:13:43] business is slowing down a little bit
[01:13:45] it's just function of the economy
[01:13:47] people have rebuilt everything
[01:13:49] that there is to rebuild
[01:13:51] spring is coming up
[01:13:53] it's going to pick back up
[01:13:55] the phone is already blowing up
[01:13:57] I've got one going into college
[01:13:59] and one coming out
[01:14:01] so life is going to be like
[01:14:03] yeah, so I'll get out when I can
[01:14:05] for sanity but it's just going to be
[01:14:07] hell
[01:14:09] good hell
[01:14:11] like temperature control
[01:14:13] climate control
[01:14:15] that's what I'm looking for
[01:14:17] very good
[01:14:21] it's time for
[01:14:23] Slasher's notable hike of the week
[01:14:25] if you want to be considered
[01:14:27] for the hike of the week
[01:14:29] simply tag Slasher

[01:15:07] shit
[01:15:09] hurry up
[01:15:11] can I do it right now
[01:15:13] well I think you did cone
[01:15:15] didn't you? technically
[01:15:17] this is the audio
[01:15:19] version of the post
[01:15:21] I'll give you a cone because we discussed that
[01:15:23] in detail
[01:15:25] ginger beard
[01:15:27] keen starts us off with
[01:15:29] Mikey
[01:15:31] he did
[01:15:33] cat or skill falls
[01:15:35] in the cat skills? oh I never heard of that
[01:15:37] I think he made it up
[01:15:39] bish
[01:15:41] bish falls in mass
[01:15:43] I have
[01:15:45] he tagged us again
[01:15:47] he did
[01:15:49] little pacman ed knock for sunset
[01:15:51] and then
[01:15:53] for the eclipse
[01:15:55] he was up on Madison and Adams and went back to the hut
[01:15:57] for the totality
[01:15:59] that's pretty slick
[01:16:01] he's another hostile
[01:16:03] guest
[01:16:05] at the sweet hostel
[01:16:07] oh the sweet hostel
[01:16:09] I thought he might have anger issues
[01:16:11] he's a cream puff
[01:16:13] Mike is one of the nicest men out there
[01:16:15] he's a great guy
[01:16:17] cream puff
[01:16:19] how about sweet out mike
[01:16:21] you're always our cream puff
[01:16:23] ginger beard
[01:16:25] so ec banks
[01:16:27] hikes tagged us for pierce
[01:16:29] with a brief attempt towards mitspa
[01:16:31] via the croffford path but ultimately turned back
[01:16:33] which is probably a good call
[01:16:35] get back to the super highway
[01:16:37] of the trail he was on
[01:16:39] Liz Faye tagged us
[01:16:41] Liz your partner
[01:16:43] nope she's out
[01:16:45] two times, that's enough
[01:16:47] shut it off
[01:16:49] you're not tom brady
[01:16:51] stop
[01:16:53] did garnet and louis hill and Bethlehem
[01:16:55] I've done those as well
[01:16:57] those are pretty cool
[01:16:59] I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt here
[01:17:01] let me look back
[01:17:03] in the list here to see if you did tag
[01:17:05] but hold on
[01:17:07] hold on
[01:17:09] wow
[01:17:11] this could be really embarrassing
[01:17:17] ginger beard
[01:17:19] hold on this is getting good
[01:17:21] oh wait a minute you did tag us
[01:17:23] you tagged us for
[01:17:25] don't tell me you stopped watching and missed the once in a lifetime double eclipse
[01:17:27] that was the one you
[01:17:29] I did the eclipse
[01:17:31] the last hike I did was
[01:17:33] before that was orange
[01:17:35] and someone else who you just mentioned
[01:17:37] got the notable hike
[01:17:39] I thought I was going to sneak in on that one
[01:17:41] but she didn't get that one
[01:17:43] she didn't get the notable because Mike caught on
[01:17:45] because I was trying to piggyback on that one
[01:17:47] if she had won
[01:17:49] I was there
[01:17:51] so it counts
[01:17:53] can you explain the other one there with the questionable decisions
[01:17:55] and there was a picture of a yellow kayak
[01:17:57] oh yeah
[01:18:01] funny thing
[01:18:03] we had just enough snow up in Vermont
[01:18:05] and we had more alcohol than we had snow
[01:18:07] and we were just kind of hanging out
[01:18:09] and we just decided
[01:18:11] that it would be fun
[01:18:13] first of all I had a butt sled and that's how it started
[01:18:15] so I made just a little luge
[01:18:17] down and then we built a little ramp
[01:18:19] to make the butt sled go faster right near the road
[01:18:21] how do you know where this was going
[01:18:23] we made a bigger ramp and then
[01:18:25] my son genetically linked
[01:18:27] was why don't we get the kayak
[01:18:29] and he being the adult said that's a terrible idea
[01:18:31] it's got a rudder
[01:18:33] that is a bad idea
[01:18:35] and he said well it doesn't have a rudder
[01:18:37] and somehow that was okay
[01:18:39] that she's like oh yeah go ahead then
[01:18:41] I'm like what?
[01:18:43] so perfect nothing to hold you back
[01:18:45] so and off we went and it was just an absolute blast
[01:18:47] that is freaking awesome
[01:18:49] we built a little ramp
[01:18:51] really? in a kayak?
[01:18:53] it was so much fun
[01:18:55] was it a two person or just one
[01:18:57] you can just totally mess yourself up
[01:18:59] you don't have to mess your partner up
[01:19:01] you can just put your vest on and it's a one person
[01:19:03] totally safe it was a blast
[01:19:05] we had style points
[01:19:07] then we had distance
[01:19:09] did it like roll left or right
[01:19:11] or did you use the paddle?
[01:19:13] it rolled left and then it tumbled
[01:19:15] it was a blast
[01:19:17] that sounds cool
[01:19:19] people would kind of watch
[01:19:21] I'm going to go down the caw in a kayak now
[01:19:23] I'm so excited
[01:19:25] I could tow that son of a bitch right up there
[01:19:27] stopping would be a problem I think
[01:19:29] you'd stop
[01:19:31] you'd get air
[01:19:33] I just wouldn't want to go into Burt's ravine
[01:19:37] I'm going to make sure it's below Jacob's ladder
[01:19:41] that's hairy I've yet to see that in person
[01:19:43] is it really that dangerous?
[01:19:45] well I know Jacob's but Burt
[01:19:47] that one section where
[01:19:49] when there's a lot of snow
[01:19:51] it tends to pile up next to the track
[01:19:53] then it makes like a 45 degree angle
[01:19:55] so you literally have to like
[01:19:57] dig in
[01:19:59] or walk close to the tracks
[01:20:01] because you can slide off
[01:20:03] how much of a drop?
[01:20:05] 30, 40 feet
[01:20:07] well with a friend of mine
[01:20:09] actually a couple of years ago
[01:20:11] she got rescued there
[01:20:13] during COVID?
[01:20:15] I do
[01:20:17] she got hurt real bad
[01:20:19] I remember she took a lot of heat
[01:20:21] to social media
[01:20:23] exactly when I did it
[01:20:25] I see it wasn't too sketchy
[01:20:27] but at that 45 degree angle
[01:20:29] with Littlefoot we were going up there
[01:20:31] and I tied a rope from my belt
[01:20:33] to hers to make sure
[01:20:35] she wouldn't go sliding
[01:20:37] she needed a band wash
[01:20:39] and so we went up that way
[01:20:41] sometimes it's really
[01:20:43] depends on how much snow there is
[01:20:45] but if there's not a lot of snow
[01:20:47] it's like a little bowl
[01:20:49] the more snow piles up close to that track
[01:20:51] especially if it snow packs and gets icy
[01:20:53] I've seen it really icy
[01:20:55] gone up there with
[01:20:57] one of the few places I've used full crampons
[01:20:59] had the axe out
[01:21:01] you sneeze one way
[01:21:03] and you see people with ice axes skiing
[01:21:05] but they're on their backpack
[01:21:07] you can't have it in your hands
[01:21:09] so what are you carrying it for?
[01:21:11] it's safe but you can't go on the other side
[01:21:13] of the track, there's too much snow
[01:21:15] it all builds up there with a drift
[01:21:17] so we're going to do the kayak thing
[01:21:19] just remind me after the show
[01:21:21] last on this list is
[01:21:23] Carrie Barrel
[01:21:25] who did Madison and Adams as well
[01:21:27] for the eclipse
[01:21:29] Dave of course, he would give you a cone
[01:21:31] so Dave I guess you can decide
[01:21:33] who's the notable hike of the week
[01:21:35] that puts a ton of pressure on me
[01:21:37] I know
[01:21:39] I can't do my beer
[01:21:41] I'm handing this to you
[01:21:43] on a platter
[01:21:45] I have guilt
[01:21:47] I can hear Mike and Russia screaming
[01:21:49] I don't know how you say no in Russian
[01:21:51] no, yeah
[01:21:53] I don't know
[01:21:55] can I give it to myself
[01:21:57] I don't know how this works
[01:21:59] is he just going to come back and overturn it
[01:22:01] does he have that power?
[01:22:03] I don't think he has that power, this is a 50-50
[01:22:05] venture
[01:22:07] I guess I'm a self-appointed notable hiker
[01:22:09] I feel weird about this, I feel dirty
[01:22:11] no, give it to yourself
[01:22:13] what do you think?
[01:22:15] the eclipse happened
[01:22:17] that's a rarity
[01:22:19] this moment will never happen again
[01:22:21] probably where he's in Europe
[01:22:23] and has no say in this matter
[01:22:25] whatsoever so I would take the ball and run
[01:22:27] I think this is the day
[01:22:29] I think this is it
[01:22:31] I think it's happening
[01:22:33] I think we have totality
[01:22:35] I agree, the vote is in
[01:22:37] congratulations
[01:22:39] I'd like to thank everybody
[01:22:41] of Heitzlitz
[01:22:43] I can't forget my parents
[01:22:45] I can't forget my parents
[01:22:47] who give them a skunky wife
[01:22:49] do you want to own the couch and have a talk?
[01:22:51] we might need those skunky wives
[01:22:53] I just need a minute, I never thought this day would happen
[01:22:55] here we are
[01:22:57] he's glowing
[01:22:59] Susan Lucci, I love you
[01:23:01] thank you so much
[01:23:03] here comes the music
[01:23:05] I'd like to thank the academy
[01:23:07] there's just too many people
[01:23:09] oh my god
[01:23:11] congratulations
[01:23:13] where's Ricky at your base when you need him?
[01:23:15] I'm going to print that shirt
[01:23:17] when I get home
[01:23:19] my name in the back and everything
[01:23:21] oh man, Mike's going to have a heart attack
[01:23:23] no, that's funny
[01:23:25] so let's go into our
[01:23:27] guest of the week
[01:23:29] and this is
[01:23:31] 48 Peaks Alzheimer's
[01:23:33] we're going to talk to you Cindy Hessian
[01:23:35] and Elena Barrett of 48 Peaks
[01:23:37] let's check it out
[01:23:39] Cindy, that's another hostile
[01:23:41] she's hostile
[01:23:43] oh, she's a sweet hut
[01:23:49] Slasher's hiking topic of the week
[01:23:55] so tonight we are joined
[01:23:57] by Cindy Hessian
[01:23:59] is that correct Cindy? Hessian or Hessian?
[01:24:01] Hessian, Hessian
[01:24:03] a little fast, okay
[01:24:05] and Elena Barrett
[01:24:07] they're two representatives
[01:24:09] oh my goodness, I'm off to such a horrible start
[01:24:11] I have times all the time
[01:24:13] does it really happen all the time?
[01:24:15] that's alright, I'll respond to you there
[01:24:17] okay, well
[01:24:19] they're both from the Alzheimer's
[01:24:21] Association
[01:24:23] and there's a big event coming up this spring
[01:24:25] and it's right up here
[01:24:27] in the northeast in New Hampshire
[01:24:29] it's called the 48 Peaks Alzheimer's event
[01:24:31] and they're here to break it down for us
[01:24:33] but do you two get nervous doing these things?
[01:24:35] do you do a lot of these
[01:24:37] interviews and online types of things?
[01:24:41] this is only my second
[01:24:43] so I still get a little of those nerves
[01:24:45] I had one earlier this week
[01:24:47] and so I feel like I'm fresh on
[01:24:49] coming off one and I really enjoyed the experience
[01:24:51] so happy to be here
[01:24:53] alright, and how about you Cindy?
[01:24:55] I'm getting better, I still had some nerves
[01:24:57] but I was like, it's stomp
[01:24:59] I should be too afraid, right?
[01:25:01] yeah, I won't fight
[01:25:03] you know what's funny, I get actually sort of nervous doing these
[01:25:05] I had
[01:25:07] for some reason, it's easier when Mike's here
[01:25:09] because he's such a pro with it
[01:25:11] but yeah, for whatever reason I get a little nervous
[01:25:13] it's actually easier for me if people are in the room
[01:25:15] here with me, I find that easier
[01:25:17] but like through the remote connection
[01:25:19] it's just a little odd
[01:25:21] but anyhow
[01:25:23] so before we get into the big topics
[01:25:25] Cindy, how did you get into hiking
[01:25:27] and how did you get into
[01:25:29] this great organization?
[01:25:31] yeah, I'd say
[01:25:33] I first got into hiking as a kid
[01:25:35] my dad was a member of the Mass Audubon Society
[01:25:37] and I went to the local nature camp
[01:25:39] like for February and April breaks
[01:25:41] so you know, hiking as a kid is like one
[01:25:43] two miles, right?
[01:25:45] and then when I was in grad school
[01:25:47] out at UMass Amherst
[01:25:49] I explored a bit of the valley there
[01:25:51] and got into hiking
[01:25:53] and then one of my friends and her mom were working on the 48
[01:25:55] and ended up doing the 48
[01:25:57] that's how I got
[01:25:59] into New Hampshire hiking
[01:26:01] so you're looking right now
[01:26:03] are you living down where in Mass or?
[01:26:05] yeah, I'm right outside Boston
[01:26:07] so we have some
[01:26:09] middle sexfells, blue hills
[01:26:11] I could drive out to like watch Chuset
[01:26:13] and then it's a good hour
[01:26:15] up to like, Winnipeg-Sawke area
[01:26:17] and then two of the whites
[01:26:19] yeah, it's not too bad
[01:26:21] okay, excellent and how did you get involved
[01:26:23] with the Alzheimer's organization?
[01:26:25] so the same friend I mentioned
[01:26:27] who got me into the 48
[01:26:29] and her mom were hiking
[01:26:31] I think it was the Franconia Loop back in 2017
[01:26:33] and they came upon
[01:26:35] a group of hikers
[01:26:37] dressed in purple
[01:26:39] and they asked, you know, what are you out here doing?
[01:26:41] and it was for 48 peaks
[01:26:43] so she
[01:26:45] didn't have a connection at the time to Alzheimer's
[01:26:47] or dementia but she knew I did
[01:26:49] so she sent me the details
[01:26:51] we signed up for 2018
[01:26:53] and then got a whole team together in 2019
[01:26:55] and here we are, I'm still doing it
[01:26:57] wow, that's great and is it all volunteer for you?
[01:27:01] or are you actually a paid volunteer
[01:27:03] or how does that work?
[01:27:05] all volunteer, I'm the new volunteer chair
[01:27:07] actually for this year
[01:27:09] so that's my first time
[01:27:11] jumping into helping really
[01:27:13] you know, I've always been involved organizing
[01:27:15] since 2020 but now I'm really helping
[01:27:17] work one-on-one with Megan
[01:27:19] yeah, yeah
[01:27:21] playing everything with the team, yeah
[01:27:23] well, that's fantastic, I mean I've not met
[01:27:25] anybody that hasn't been just top notch
[01:27:27] from the organization, Megan
[01:27:31] Lynn, is Lynn's user still involved?
[01:27:33] I mean everybody is just really phenomenal
[01:27:37] you have such a great crew
[01:27:39] okay so how about you, Alana?
[01:27:41] yeah, so I
[01:27:43] I'm a little bit newer into the hiking
[01:27:45] I did a little bit different than Cindy
[01:27:47] I didn't really grow up with too much hiking experience
[01:27:49] I'm also in Massachusetts
[01:27:51] a little closer to the New Hampshire border
[01:27:53] but
[01:27:55] kind of got into it through the Alzheimer's route
[01:27:57] my mom
[01:27:59] has younger onset Alzheimer's
[01:28:01] and as a caregiver I started
[01:28:03] getting involved in the Alzheimer's
[01:28:05] associations they have so many different
[01:28:07] ways to get involved
[01:28:09] whether it's a walk or a race
[01:28:11] or going to
[01:28:13] different events or just
[01:28:15] looking at their resources
[01:28:17] and hiking was something that I did
[01:28:19] kind of want to get into and explore
[01:28:21] and wanted to kind of find a community
[01:28:23] that I could learn from
[01:28:25] and this popped up on social media
[01:28:27] as kind of a good way
[01:28:29] to kind of get my foot maybe in the door
[01:28:31] learn some hiking experience
[01:28:33] so two years ago
[01:28:35] I was able to join Cindy along on a hike
[01:28:37] and do my first
[01:28:39] 48 and so I'm still new into the
[01:28:41] hiking realm but everyone has been
[01:28:43] so welcoming and kind
[01:28:45] and
[01:28:47] really a great community when it comes to
[01:28:49] support with Alzheimer's whether someone's
[01:28:51] dealing with it directly or wants to
[01:28:53] learn more about it it's just been an awesome resource
[01:28:55] okay now what was your first
[01:28:57] 48 peak
[01:28:59] after all we are a hiking podcast
[01:29:01] okay
[01:29:03] after all we are a hiking podcast
[01:29:05] yeah so I'm up
[01:29:07] I'm up to three now
[01:29:09] I'm hoping to do a few more and within the last few years
[01:29:11] I've gone kind of from hiking
[01:29:13] once or twice to getting out there
[01:29:15] more often on the weekends
[01:29:17] I'm excited to get out there
[01:29:19] and do a little bit more this year
[01:29:21] and this year I get to lead my own team
[01:29:23] for the first time so
[01:29:25] really excited. Yeah we'll talk about that
[01:29:27] for sure but when it comes to Alzheimer's
[01:29:29] Alana
[01:29:31] can you talk about Alzheimer's
[01:29:33] in general for the audience
[01:29:35] just you know
[01:29:37] history causes
[01:29:39] treatments things of that nature
[01:29:41] yeah absolutely so
[01:29:43] I'll start first with a lot of times
[01:29:45] we'll hear dementia and then there are Alzheimer's
[01:29:47] and dementia is
[01:29:49] an umbrella term it really describes
[01:29:51] the symptoms
[01:29:53] associated with Alzheimer's
[01:29:55] which is a form of dementia
[01:29:57] and some of those are
[01:29:59] most common memory loss but sometimes
[01:30:01] confusion trouble cognitively
[01:30:03] and behaviorably with everyday tasks
[01:30:05] and so Alzheimer's is one
[01:30:07] of the most common types of dementia
[01:30:09] but there also are other types of dementia
[01:30:11] and so wanted to kind
[01:30:13] start with that distinction because sometimes you hear both
[01:30:15] terms and you're like are they the same
[01:30:17] are they different and so
[01:30:19] the first time kind of learning
[01:30:21] kind of what symptoms my mom was having
[01:30:23] and she's now in her 60s
[01:30:25] but she started seeing some of these symptoms
[01:30:27] in her 50s and they were
[01:30:29] kind of that memory loss
[01:30:31] and having trouble kind of remembering
[01:30:33] different daily tasks or different
[01:30:35] conversations that she had
[01:30:37] she was a nurse
[01:30:39] and fantastic nurse but
[01:30:41] with introduction of new electronic health records
[01:30:43] and stuff like that some of those
[01:30:45] day to day tasks just got really challenging
[01:30:47] and then there's also
[01:30:49] some other behavioral aspects
[01:30:51] and everyone presents a little bit differently
[01:30:53] I'm obviously talking about my experience with my mom
[01:30:55] but some people see
[01:30:57] different behaviors
[01:30:59] or different signs that might indicate
[01:31:01] there are I think
[01:31:03] 10s like common symptoms
[01:31:05] and on the Alzheimer's
[01:31:07] association website
[01:31:09] they kind of list out these different early detection
[01:31:11] type of symptoms
[01:31:13] that you might see it's a really great resource
[01:31:15] so if you know
[01:31:17] someone that you know or maybe yourself
[01:31:19] you start kind of feeling like maybe these are
[01:31:21] something I should be concerned about doesn't feel
[01:31:23] like it's part of the normal healthy aging
[01:31:25] process of a brain
[01:31:27] not to say that lapses
[01:31:29] in confusion here they're getting confused
[01:31:31] isn't normal sometimes it is
[01:31:33] but definitely check out the resource
[01:31:35] on Alzheimer's page for a little bit more
[01:31:37] depth as well as you know talk to a doctor
[01:31:39] or a medical professional
[01:31:41] there's really a concern
[01:31:43] and when you say Alzheimer's page is that the national
[01:31:45] what page exactly is this
[01:31:47] yep so the website you can
[01:31:49] go to is um
[01:31:51] alz.org
[01:31:53] okay yes okay
[01:31:55] and then for more specifics about kind of
[01:31:57] that's that'll bring into the general page
[01:31:59] but more specifics about our
[01:32:01] are what we're going to talk about here with
[01:32:03] 48 peaks you can find that
[01:32:05] alz.org
[01:32:07] or alz.org
[01:32:09] okay
[01:32:11] I also happen to have the 10 signs of Alzheimer's
[01:32:13] I have a print out I keep it on my fridge
[01:32:15] I can read them
[01:32:17] if it's helpful
[01:32:19] just as like a reference for everyone
[01:32:21] so Alana mentioned a few already
[01:32:23] so there's memory loss
[01:32:25] that disrupts daily life
[01:32:27] challenges in planning
[01:32:29] or problem solving
[01:32:31] difficulty completing familiar tasks
[01:32:33] at home at work or at leisure
[01:32:35] confusion with time and place
[01:32:37] trouble understanding visual
[01:32:39] images or spatial relationships
[01:32:41] new problems with words
[01:32:43] and speaking or writing
[01:32:45] misplacing things and losing the ability
[01:32:47] to retrace your steps
[01:32:49] decreased or poor judgment
[01:32:51] withdrawal from work or social activities
[01:32:53] and changes in mood and personality
[01:32:57] so it's a nice little print out I actually
[01:32:59] well you can't see it because my background's blurred but
[01:33:01] it's something I just keep on my fridge
[01:33:03] and it's on the alz website
[01:33:05] like Alana mentioned
[01:33:07] anyone wants to keep it handy as well
[01:33:09] yeah no it's definitely good to know
[01:33:11] so
[01:33:13] either one of you can talk about this maybe Cindy
[01:33:15] what about genetics
[01:33:17] or
[01:33:19] prevention early signs symptoms that type of thing
[01:33:21] we went over some of the symptoms
[01:33:23] how about is there a genetic link
[01:33:25] does it run in families
[01:33:27] or what's happening with that
[01:33:29] yeah it's
[01:33:31] having a parent or sibling with all
[01:33:33] timers increases your risk it doesn't mean
[01:33:35] you will develop it but it definitely
[01:33:37] increases your chances of it
[01:33:39] there is genetic testing
[01:33:41] available but the association
[01:33:43] doesn't recommend it and
[01:33:45] instead if you notice signs talk to your doctor
[01:33:47] or call the association's
[01:33:49] helpline for advice
[01:33:51] so there is definitely
[01:33:53] some different genetic influences
[01:33:55] for sure
[01:33:57] I suppose I'll go back to you
[01:33:59] how about
[01:34:01] preventative steps that somebody can take
[01:34:03] to mitigate
[01:34:05] the risk of developing Alzheimer's
[01:34:07] yeah absolutely
[01:34:09] there is still a lot of
[01:34:11] research being done into kind of
[01:34:13] understanding more about what the cause is
[01:34:15] or kind of research into
[01:34:17] understanding it and there are
[01:34:19] you know a lot of research
[01:34:21] coming out that lifestyle factors
[01:34:23] you know exercise
[01:34:25] and healthy diet
[01:34:27] and kind of being mindful
[01:34:29] of you know your daily
[01:34:31] activities
[01:34:33] can really help decrease your risk
[01:34:35] of Alzheimer's
[01:34:37] making sure that you're taking care
[01:34:39] of your body and you know you make sure
[01:34:41] you're getting your regular screenings
[01:34:43] and checkups and stuff like that
[01:34:45] because there is a lot of correlation
[01:34:47] between kind of having
[01:34:49] other diseases and developing Alzheimer's
[01:34:51] okay
[01:34:53] alright any other causes
[01:34:55] that have been discovered
[01:34:57] pollution or environmental causes
[01:34:59] yeah there is definitely
[01:35:01] some environmental causes as well
[01:35:03] I don't think they are
[01:35:05] able to pinpoint one thing here
[01:35:07] or there but in terms
[01:35:09] of a healthy living environment
[01:35:11] and you know clean air
[01:35:13] and clean water and resources
[01:35:15] to kind of healthy young processed food
[01:35:17] is definitely goes a long way
[01:35:19] into keeping your brain healthy
[01:35:21] just overall
[01:35:23] yeah there has been a lot of talk about that lately
[01:35:25] just in the news
[01:35:27] media in general
[01:35:29] yeah I think it all comes back to
[01:35:31] the principles of brain health too
[01:35:33] you know the food that you eat
[01:35:35] and how you spend your day
[01:35:37] you're trying to keep your brain healthy
[01:35:39] and functioning and keep it engaged
[01:35:41] and a lot of those
[01:35:43] aspects are really important for
[01:35:45] preventing Alzheimer's
[01:35:47] okay now how about
[01:35:49] family support and treatment
[01:35:51] what resources are out there
[01:35:53] for families or
[01:35:55] couples, individuals that may be experiencing
[01:35:57] this
[01:35:59] I can cover caregiver support
[01:36:01] first so the association
[01:36:03] offers a number of resources for caregivers
[01:36:05] including like I mentioned the 24-7
[01:36:07] health line
[01:36:09] it's I can mention it
[01:36:11] I think it will be in the show notes but it's
[01:36:13] 1-800-272-3900
[01:36:15] it's 24-7
[01:36:17] there's over 200
[01:36:19] clinicians manning it
[01:36:21] I shouldn't say 200
[01:36:23] 200 languages spoken
[01:36:25] by the clinicians who man the health line
[01:36:27] and you can call them with
[01:36:29] any question they'll help you figure out
[01:36:31] what's best for your situation
[01:36:33] and offer advice
[01:36:35] there's also they can provide tips
[01:36:37] on addressing caregiver stress
[01:36:39] depression, dealing with grief
[01:36:41] there's other support groups
[01:36:43] Alana I'm sure can comment on this
[01:36:45] there's caregiver support groups
[01:36:47] if you're a young caregiver
[01:36:49] or if you're a sandwich generation
[01:36:51] for anybody who might need
[01:36:53] just a listening ear and some support
[01:36:55] from people in a similar situation as you
[01:36:57] and there's just
[01:36:59] in general education programs as well
[01:37:01] both in person and online
[01:37:03] that caregivers can utilize
[01:37:05] and they're free
[01:37:07] go ahead Alana
[01:37:09] in my experience utilizing these resources has been
[01:37:11] extremely helpful
[01:37:13] I said my mom was diagnosed at a younger age
[01:37:15] me being in my 20s
[01:37:17] wasn't really seeing too many people
[01:37:19] in my shoes that had a parent
[01:37:21] maybe it was a grandparent or something like that
[01:37:23] but reaching out to the all-time
[01:37:25] association especially some of those support groups
[01:37:27] are just finding a community like
[01:37:29] 48 peaks where
[01:37:31] there are others that you can connect with
[01:37:33] has been so helpful and supportive
[01:37:35] and it's kind of helped give me a voice
[01:37:37] to talk to others that
[01:37:39] I might have not had the chance to talk to
[01:37:41] because
[01:37:43] I wasn't sure if there was anyone else
[01:37:45] I knew that was going through this
[01:37:47] so can definitely say
[01:37:49] that those resources are really helpful
[01:37:51] for taking the steps
[01:37:53] and being able to talk to folks
[01:37:55] That's incredible
[01:37:57] now how about the financial
[01:37:59] impact on families
[01:38:01] I mean how does this
[01:38:03] impact a family
[01:38:05] somebody who may have to stop
[01:38:07] working full time or what exactly
[01:38:09] can you tell us about that
[01:38:11] Go ahead Cindy
[01:38:13] I got some quick facts and then Alana
[01:38:15] can expand on them
[01:38:17] in terms of impact it's very
[01:38:19] significant as you can probably imagine
[01:38:21] our aging population continues to grow
[01:38:23] so in
[01:38:25] 2023 I should say
[01:38:27] not 2013 wrong year
[01:38:29] Alzheimer's and other dementias
[01:38:31] were estimated to toss the nation
[01:38:33] $345 billion
[01:38:35] and by 2050
[01:38:37] that could rise to nearly a trillion
[01:38:39] dollars so it is very significant
[01:38:41] and in terms
[01:38:43] of people more than
[01:38:45] 11 million Americans provide
[01:38:47] unpaid care
[01:38:49] and in 2022 that was valued
[01:38:51] as almost $340 billion
[01:38:53] in terms of how much that unpaid
[01:38:55] care cost so it
[01:38:57] is sometimes a
[01:38:59] thankless job I'm sure it is an unpaid
[01:39:01] role as well and
[01:39:03] it has a huge not only financial burden
[01:39:05] but I'm sure an emotional
[01:39:07] potentially physical burden as well
[01:39:09] on yourself and your family
[01:39:11] as you're caring for your loved one
[01:39:13] Alana
[01:39:15] Yeah I would add that
[01:39:17] at least from our
[01:39:19] experience
[01:39:21] definitely
[01:39:23] because the disease is so long in the progression
[01:39:25] we've been on caring for my mom
[01:39:27] for 10 years
[01:39:29] it does have a strong financial
[01:39:31] impact kind of those facts that
[01:39:33] we shared about caregivers
[01:39:35] giving you know setting aside
[01:39:37] time from their own work to
[01:39:39] do caregiving
[01:39:41] a really important tip if someone is
[01:39:43] kind of seeing these symptoms
[01:39:45] early on and feels like they're nice
[01:39:47] to be action is definitely
[01:39:49] engaged with some financial planning
[01:39:51] or there's definitely some
[01:39:53] folks that are specialized in kind of helping
[01:39:55] navigate the financial path because
[01:39:57] on top of you know the burden
[01:39:59] of caregiving and the stress of caregiving
[01:40:01] if you're adding a financial stress to
[01:40:03] it can feel really overwhelming
[01:40:05] and the Alzheimer's Association
[01:40:07] can definitely help with kind of
[01:40:09] you know questions around that
[01:40:11] I know they might have some support groups too
[01:40:13] but really
[01:40:15] be proactive about
[01:40:17] that earlier rather than later
[01:40:19] and kind of work with
[01:40:21] kind of financially planning so that
[01:40:23] you're not too
[01:40:25] stressed out later along
[01:40:27] What are your thoughts regarding
[01:40:29] keeping somebody
[01:40:31] home as long as possible
[01:40:37] versus like an institutional
[01:40:39] approach I know that see this is the hardest thing
[01:40:41] I'm a physical therapist and I work in
[01:40:43] a lot of memory
[01:40:45] care units and you see the struggle
[01:40:47] that families go through and the
[01:40:49] difficulty when
[01:40:51] the realization happens that
[01:40:53] this is just not safe
[01:40:55] anymore and I may have to
[01:40:57] change the
[01:40:59] position of my loved one
[01:41:01] so that they're in a safe environment
[01:41:05] What's out there for data and information
[01:41:07] regarding
[01:41:09] how people do at home versus
[01:41:11] an institution
[01:41:13] I know it's a tough question but
[01:41:15] maybe an obvious question but
[01:41:17] any insight as to that
[01:41:19] I can speak to that from our personal
[01:41:21] experience that
[01:41:23] there is a lot of options
[01:41:25] and resources and it comes down to
[01:41:27] what works best for each individual
[01:41:29] family when it kind of
[01:41:31] gets to a point where you feel like
[01:41:33] your loved one's safety or
[01:41:35] their ability to be cared for at home
[01:41:37] is kind of not able
[01:41:39] to be met then sometimes
[01:41:41] moving them into a facility means that they get a better quality
[01:41:43] of life and they get fair met by
[01:41:45] the needs of folks that are trained
[01:41:47] to do so but it can be a really difficult
[01:41:49] decision and
[01:41:51] for our family we've kind
[01:41:53] of looked at what are some of the options that we're able to
[01:41:55] keep my mom at home as long
[01:41:57] as possible and one of that is that
[01:41:59] my dad is retired and I work
[01:42:01] from home and we are a team
[01:42:03] and we both
[01:42:05] work really hard to try and balance it
[01:42:07] but not everyone can
[01:42:09] sometimes people are diagnosed with this much later on
[01:42:11] in life and might not have the physical
[01:42:13] strength a lot of times I'm out there
[01:42:15] lifting up my mom or kind of getting down
[01:42:17] there on the floor and stuff like that
[01:42:19] and so totally
[01:42:21] understand when you know there's a lot
[01:42:23] of circumstances and understanding
[01:42:25] that financial component that we talked about
[01:42:27] that kind of lead into why someone would
[01:42:29] see care but for us some of
[01:42:31] the resources that we've used to be able to keep
[01:42:33] my mom at home is looking at adult day
[01:42:35] care programs, looking at community
[01:42:37] resources, looking at different
[01:42:39] caregivers that can come into
[01:42:41] the home and that there's
[01:42:43] different you know services that can be provided
[01:42:45] to kind of offer the caregivers
[01:42:47] a little bit of respite care
[01:42:49] and kind of give them a break as well as
[01:42:51] kind of meet some of those
[01:42:53] needs of if it's
[01:42:55] you know comes down to just giving them
[01:42:57] a little extra support
[01:42:59] and be able to keep someone at home and so
[01:43:01] again Alzheimer's Association
[01:43:03] has a lot of great resources
[01:43:05] and if there's questions on kind of what some of these
[01:43:07] resources are to be able to keep a loved one
[01:43:09] at home a little bit longer
[01:43:11] it's a great place to start
[01:43:13] okay yeah that's
[01:43:15] great that you mentioned that so adult day care
[01:43:17] that's a great option
[01:43:19] down to master's plenty of that
[01:43:21] I remember when I was doing home care
[01:43:23] sometimes I would go in and work with some of these
[01:43:25] individuals in those facilities
[01:43:27] which is great
[01:43:29] and then caregivers such as
[01:43:31] visiting angels or
[01:43:33] other organizations like that is that what
[01:43:35] you're referring to
[01:43:37] yeah there's a different assortment
[01:43:39] of yeah of home care
[01:43:41] some of it is private
[01:43:43] depending on you know financial
[01:43:45] feasibility and stuff like that there is some that
[01:43:47] might be qualified for by insurance
[01:43:49] depending on what the physical needs are
[01:43:51] and what the
[01:43:53] daily activities that that person
[01:43:55] either need support with or can actually
[01:43:57] function with
[01:43:59] alrighty
[01:44:01] I guess we should shift gears did I miss anything
[01:44:03] regarding some of the basics out there
[01:44:05] for Alzheimer's in the care that's involved
[01:44:07] before we move on to this great event
[01:44:09] we talk about treatment
[01:44:11] I think we briefly mentioned it
[01:44:13] but I sure end up
[01:44:15] saying specifics about it
[01:44:17] we are thankfully in the
[01:44:19] era of treatment and I know we've said that
[01:44:21] on I think a past episode that I was on
[01:44:23] but the last two years
[01:44:25] have had huge progress
[01:44:27] in the research and
[01:44:29] you know drug discovery space
[01:44:31] so we do have our first FDA
[01:44:33] and more importantly Medicare
[01:44:35] covered drug LeCambi
[01:44:37] and it does address
[01:44:39] the underlying causes of dementia
[01:44:41] not just the symptoms so this is
[01:44:43] for early stage patients
[01:44:45] just to clarify it's not for
[01:44:47] late stage but if you catch the symptoms
[01:44:49] early there is now
[01:44:51] an option for treatment
[01:44:53] so hopefully it will
[01:44:55] you know as I mentioned it addresses the underlying
[01:44:57] causes of dementia so it should
[01:44:59] you know reduce the
[01:45:01] progression and maybe
[01:45:03] as we were talking about
[01:45:05] lengthen out how long you can keep someone at
[01:45:07] home before maybe having to move
[01:45:09] your loved one into assisted
[01:45:11] living or memory care for example
[01:45:13] so it's definitely
[01:45:15] very hopeful. So that's been
[01:45:17] the last two years roughly
[01:45:19] that it's been available?
[01:45:21] It might be a year
[01:45:23] I forget the exact timing
[01:45:25] but it has it had
[01:45:27] the clinical trial results came out within the last
[01:45:29] two years and then the approval happened
[01:45:31] Wow that's great
[01:45:33] we'll see how it goes
[01:45:35] any long term studies behind that
[01:45:37] or
[01:45:39] I believe there's more
[01:45:41] in like the early stages
[01:45:43] but I don't know off the top of my head
[01:45:45] where they stand but there's more
[01:45:47] coming hopefully. Oh I'm sure
[01:45:49] yeah a lot of stuff is happening fast
[01:45:51] in the medical field and especially
[01:45:53] the genetics field as well
[01:45:55] alright well that's good news
[01:45:57] did we talk about
[01:45:59] diet and exercise
[01:46:01] enough as well?
[01:46:03] Like Alana
[01:46:05] are you able to
[01:46:07] take your mom out
[01:46:09] and get her moving
[01:46:11] and just get the blood flow in and everything else
[01:46:13] I mean it's clearly important
[01:46:15] to have an active lifestyle
[01:46:17] gets trickier as we get older
[01:46:19] but how's that been for you?
[01:46:21] Yeah I think
[01:46:23] active lifestyle
[01:46:25] and diet and exercise
[01:46:27] can be one of the biggest factors
[01:46:29] in making a difference
[01:46:31] in even preventing but also when someone
[01:46:33] is diagnosed in those earlier stages
[01:46:35] can really make a difference
[01:46:37] in promoting that
[01:46:39] they're able to kind of
[01:46:41] delay the progression
[01:46:43] of the disease.
[01:46:45] The stage that my mom's at now and she's actually
[01:46:47] not as mobile
[01:46:49] as she was but for a good amount of years
[01:46:51] we would go out on daily walks
[01:46:53] and we would get
[01:46:55] those exercise and that blood flowing
[01:46:57] and would really monitor kind of
[01:46:59] how much
[01:47:01] ice creams we were having per the week
[01:47:03] and kind of those
[01:47:05] treat meals and stuff like that
[01:47:07] and I do think that
[01:47:09] my mom was
[01:47:11] started to show symptoms over 10 years ago
[01:47:13] but it's really only been within the last two years
[01:47:15] that her mobility has declined
[01:47:17] and so those years that we were
[01:47:19] trying to
[01:47:21] go out and have exercise, my mom was an avid golfer
[01:47:23] which was a great way
[01:47:25] of getting your muscles moving
[01:47:27] and moving around and stuff like that too
[01:47:29] so
[01:47:31] definitely promote that, that's a really important
[01:47:33] strategy for anyone that's trying
[01:47:35] to prevent diagnosis
[01:47:37] but also anyone that might have been diagnosed
[01:47:39] and wants to still live
[01:47:41] a really healthy and fruitful life.
[01:47:43] Right. Cindy
[01:47:45] any comments on that as well?
[01:47:47] I was going to say
[01:47:49] just stay active really
[01:47:51] it's just keeping your brain
[01:47:53] going however
[01:47:55] whether it's exercise I feel like
[01:47:57] puzzles is probably also another good way
[01:47:59] like I used to do Sudoku
[01:48:01] I should do more Sudoku
[01:48:03] whatever gets your brain working in different ways
[01:48:05] I think like Alana said
[01:48:07] that's key to staying healthy
[01:48:09] yeah
[01:48:11] okay well
[01:48:13] let's shift gears to the event coming up here
[01:48:15] so
[01:48:17] you guys have invited me
[01:48:19] to play some music which is super cool this would be my second year
[01:48:21] hosting a little bit
[01:48:23] for the show that I'm really
[01:48:25] honored to be a part of that but
[01:48:27] let's start with the basic
[01:48:29] event itself
[01:48:31] where is it going to be
[01:48:33] and how do you sign up
[01:48:35] and all that other good news
[01:48:37] yeah so most of our hikers
[01:48:39] will be up in the White Mountains of New Hampshire
[01:48:41] so the purpose
[01:48:43] of the event you know it's 48 peaks
[01:48:45] we're hiking the New Hampshire 4,000
[01:48:47] footers or 48 peaks
[01:48:49] in the month of June
[01:48:51] but at this point over the summer
[01:48:53] the main hiker celebration is on June 8th
[01:48:55] that's when most of our teams
[01:48:57] will be hiking
[01:48:59] and the primary goal is that we have
[01:49:01] one team on each of the 48 peaks
[01:49:03] so we can shine as much light
[01:49:05] as we can on Alzheimer's and dementia
[01:49:07] raise awareness and fundraise
[01:49:09] to support further research efforts
[01:49:11] and more drug discoveries
[01:49:13] like what can be like I mentioned for treatment options
[01:49:15] so in terms of
[01:49:17] how we began we've been around
[01:49:19] since 2013
[01:49:21] and the peak was born out of
[01:49:23] the Alzheimer's Association's longest day fundraiser
[01:49:25] which is
[01:49:27] a signature event over the summer
[01:49:29] it's
[01:49:31] focused around the longest day of the year
[01:49:33] the summer solstice
[01:49:35] and there was a volunteer
[01:49:37] back in 20th, very clever
[01:49:39] in 2013
[01:49:41] his wife
[01:49:43] was living with younger onset
[01:49:45] and he and his family wanted
[01:49:47] to honor her and raise funds
[01:49:49] for the Alzheimer's Association
[01:49:51] so he picked hiking as his longest day
[01:49:53] event
[01:49:55] and started his fundraiser
[01:49:57] with time it gained traction
[01:49:59] more people got involved
[01:50:01] and 48 peaks just became
[01:50:03] its own event in time
[01:50:05] so since that time
[01:50:07] in 2013 we have raised
[01:50:09] over $887,000
[01:50:11] so this year
[01:50:13] hopefully
[01:50:15] we want to get that $1 million
[01:50:17] for the next year
[01:50:19] so we're going to have a big
[01:50:21] milestone
[01:50:23] big milestone
[01:50:25] no kidding
[01:50:27] how about the peaks
[01:50:29] have you signed up teams for each of the peaks yet
[01:50:31] or are there any missing or outstanding
[01:50:33] so as of last week
[01:50:35] I believe Wildcat A was still
[01:50:37] available but there was someone
[01:50:39] I spoke to who I think will be hiking it
[01:50:41] in which case we have all 48 covered
[01:50:43] for the first round of them
[01:50:45] but we expect
[01:50:47] there to be multiple teams on each peak
[01:50:49] we just want at least one team per peak
[01:50:51] and I'm trying to remember
[01:50:53] which one is Wildcat A
[01:50:55] is that the one close to the card or HUD
[01:50:57] or the one close to Glib Boulder
[01:50:59] I don't even remember
[01:51:01] I don't know I haven't done those yet
[01:51:03] oh man you're in for a treat
[01:51:05] I've heard
[01:51:07] yeah, butt kickers for sure
[01:51:09] wow, alright so $1 million
[01:51:11] so what do you think listeners
[01:51:13] have been or what
[01:51:15] let's get there right
[01:51:17] I hope the listeners have been supportive
[01:51:19] have you noticed any impact from
[01:51:21] the podcast
[01:51:23] or anything like that
[01:51:25] we'd like to try to help out
[01:51:27] yeah no you guys have been huge
[01:51:29] I did a poll at some point on Instagram
[01:51:31] for our 48 peaks
[01:51:33] Instagram and I just asked how did you hear about us
[01:51:35] and there were a good handful
[01:51:37] that heard about us through the podcast
[01:51:39] and even someone commented
[01:51:41] on Facebook recently that they were so happy
[01:51:43] they heard about us through Slasher
[01:51:45] that we were like oh good
[01:51:47] another person
[01:51:49] oh that's super cool
[01:51:51] wow, alright great
[01:51:53] so we have the event coming up on the 8th
[01:51:55] but you don't have to necessarily
[01:51:57] hike on the 8th is that right
[01:51:59] that's right you can hike
[01:52:01] whatever works for you over the summer
[01:52:03] my team historically has hiked in like July
[01:52:05] or August this year we're actually hiking
[01:52:07] the celebration weekend which is
[01:52:09] huge we're gonna make it happen
[01:52:11] but I forgot to mention
[01:52:13] oh go ahead
[01:52:15] no I'm sorry, sorry to interrupt
[01:52:17] no no I forgot to mention
[01:52:19] you don't have to hike a 4k either
[01:52:21] we have another option called
[01:52:23] create your own if you want to hike
[01:52:25] like a 52 with the view
[01:52:27] like Mount Willard or Mount Pemi
[01:52:29] or you want to do something local
[01:52:31] like a Pondicherry hike
[01:52:33] or somewhere small like a Blue Hills
[01:52:35] go for it we've got that option too
[01:52:37] it can be inclusive and anyone who wants to hike
[01:52:39] can join us
[01:52:41] that's great you know Pondicherry is beautiful
[01:52:43] I love it out there
[01:52:45] yeah any fun stories you can tell us about
[01:52:47] of the event or just
[01:52:49] any of the hikes that stand out
[01:52:51] I've heard that one team
[01:52:53] made like a human pyramid
[01:52:55] on one of the peaks one year
[01:52:57] that looked pretty cool
[01:52:59] and another did like you know a jumping photo
[01:53:01] with the whole crew
[01:53:03] that's cool, that's great
[01:53:05] you've seen like a Black Hawk flyover
[01:53:07] or anything like that
[01:53:09] I did when my friend and I hiked
[01:53:11] Webster last year
[01:53:13] I think it was a recovery mission
[01:53:15] but I did see the black I heard then saw
[01:53:17] the Black Hawk which was
[01:53:19] pretty interesting
[01:53:21] I'll drop a line to
[01:53:23] some of my friends in the
[01:53:25] Army National Guard see if they can't do a flyover
[01:53:27] on the Hague
[01:53:29] that would be neat
[01:53:31] no promises though those guys are pretty big
[01:53:33] I think one other interesting
[01:53:35] story it's not exactly fun
[01:53:37] per se
[01:53:39] it was from the
[01:53:41] 2022 event when we had
[01:53:43] the celebration at Iron Furnace
[01:53:45] and
[01:53:47] I was running the raffles table and a hiker came up
[01:53:49] to me and was chatting with me and I asked
[01:53:51] how her hike was
[01:53:53] and she said she had hiked I believe for her mom
[01:53:55] who had passed from Alzheimer's
[01:53:57] or dementia recently
[01:53:59] before then and she had actually scattered
[01:54:01] her mom's ashes at the top of the mountain
[01:54:03] that she had hiked
[01:54:05] as like you know
[01:54:07] a nice way to remember her
[01:54:09] and honor her so that was
[01:54:11] it's not a fun story per se
[01:54:13] it was very touched my heart
[01:54:15] in a certain way that reminded me why we do this
[01:54:17] oh sure
[01:54:19] yeah that's beautiful
[01:54:21] yeah I think each year seeing the photos
[01:54:23] that come through where people holding up a banner
[01:54:25] saying who they're hiking for
[01:54:27] or just kind of like the shared camaraderie
[01:54:29] and seeing all the purple t-shirts as you
[01:54:31] we were walking up and maybe another team
[01:54:33] was coming down and you pass them
[01:54:35] or someone stops you and says oh what
[01:54:37] is the purple shirt what are you hiking for
[01:54:39] and you can kind of chat about that
[01:54:41] I think those have been like really great
[01:54:43] experiences and really memorable
[01:54:45] and something that I look forward to each year and really enjoy
[01:54:47] did that happen on pierce Alana
[01:54:49] when we did pierce
[01:54:51] I feel like someone recognized us
[01:54:53] from the podcast
[01:54:55] and like got super excited
[01:54:57] the last two years
[01:54:59] the hikes I've done have been stopped
[01:55:01] or we've seen another purple shirt team
[01:55:03] or so
[01:55:05] yeah build a small community
[01:55:07] yeah no question about it
[01:55:09] we'll have to have you on after the fact
[01:55:11] to give us the rundown on how it went
[01:55:13] how many people attended if you broke
[01:55:15] the one million mark
[01:55:17] and everything else
[01:55:19] but I do have one final question
[01:55:21] is there any way
[01:55:23] people can harden their homes
[01:55:25] and make competitive measures for loved ones
[01:55:27] that may just inadvertently
[01:55:29] walk out of the house and become lost
[01:55:31] because we see that a lot up here in New Hampshire
[01:55:33] with fishing game trying to find people
[01:55:35] and searching rescue teams having to go out
[01:55:37] to assist in those things
[01:55:39] are there any things that come to mind
[01:55:41] or could be helpful
[01:55:43] Alana it might be able to comment on this too
[01:55:45] I asked Megan
[01:55:47] our event manager about this
[01:55:49] if there were any resources from the Alzheimer's Association
[01:55:51] about like how to address this
[01:55:53] and it is tricky and it depends on your
[01:55:55] you know case by case
[01:55:57] your family situation and you know home
[01:55:59] set up even
[01:56:01] the number one resource she suggested was
[01:56:03] the helpline
[01:56:05] the 24-7 phone line to call
[01:56:07] and ask someone for advice
[01:56:09] on your specific situation and what might be best
[01:56:11] there's
[01:56:13] care consultations offered
[01:56:15] by the Alzheimer's Association that are virtual
[01:56:17] similar idea
[01:56:19] and then there's some online communities
[01:56:21] where you can ask other people
[01:56:23] in similar situations like what would you do
[01:56:25] yeah so it's too broad a question
[01:56:27] that sounds like it's helpful
[01:56:29] I think it's very specific to your case
[01:56:31] got it
[01:56:33] you can also notify
[01:56:35] I'm not sure how it's structured up in New Hampshire
[01:56:37] but you can also notify local law enforcement
[01:56:39] and just have
[01:56:41] a loved one's name and maybe a picture
[01:56:43] kind of registered with them
[01:56:45] just so it's kind of
[01:56:47] an incident should happen it may be
[01:56:49] a situation where someone wanders away
[01:56:51] but maybe there's an incident
[01:56:53] because you know someone's getting aggravated
[01:56:55] and aggressive and the
[01:56:57] first responders have to show up at that house
[01:56:59] having some sort of
[01:57:01] kind of knowledge
[01:57:03] that person has dementia or has Alzheimer's
[01:57:05] really is important
[01:57:07] and how they're responded and I know
[01:57:09] that there's more training
[01:57:11] for those
[01:57:13] EMTs and first responders and responding
[01:57:15] to someone that has Alzheimer's
[01:57:17] and dementia and kind of
[01:57:19] making sure that
[01:57:21] the situation is handled and everyone
[01:57:23] is safe and calm
[01:57:25] and responsive and so
[01:57:27] we did that with my mom
[01:57:29] and other kind of things that we did
[01:57:31] is there's different
[01:57:33] resources you might be able to find on Alzheimer's team
[01:57:35] but we had a little air tag
[01:57:37] that we put in her little pocket
[01:57:39] or her wallet kind of a little
[01:57:41] GPS tracker that I know they sell on necklaces
[01:57:43] that are similar that are kind of designed
[01:57:45] for Alzheimer's and so there's
[01:57:47] different ways of
[01:57:49] if it's something that the loved one would wear
[01:57:51] and be okay with
[01:57:53] there's different ways of putting that protection in
[01:57:55] in our house
[01:57:57] there's also different locks that you can get
[01:57:59] on doors
[01:58:01] depending on someone's knowledge or
[01:58:03] their level we installed some locks
[01:58:05] that felt like they were safe to keep her in her home
[01:58:07] other kind of ADL things
[01:58:09] that we have around our home are different
[01:58:11] grab bars in case she might fall
[01:58:13] kind of getting in and out of the shower
[01:58:15] or something
[01:58:17] you had kind of baby gates to kind of
[01:58:19] corral
[01:58:21] and different support
[01:58:23] functionality items around the house
[01:58:25] and those have all kind of really helped
[01:58:27] and she's kind of progressed and developed
[01:58:29] keeping her safe at home but also
[01:58:31] should she wander outside the home
[01:58:33] we have kind of a couple preventative measures
[01:58:35] to
[01:58:37] get in place before there's any incident
[01:58:39] that's super helpful
[01:58:41] also from the first responder side
[01:58:43] Megan made me aware
[01:58:45] of there's some upcoming first responder trainings
[01:58:47] I believe they're offered by the
[01:58:49] Alzheimer's Association virtually
[01:58:51] I'm sure she can send more info
[01:58:53] over for the show notes but
[01:58:55] they're coming up June 4th
[01:58:57] and June 26th
[01:58:59] over the summer so that first
[01:59:01] responders if they want some training on how
[01:59:03] to approach a situation
[01:59:05] or a report
[01:59:07] where there's Alzheimer's patient
[01:59:09] who has wandered or roamed
[01:59:11] how to approach that situation
[01:59:13] the best they can
[01:59:15] that's super helpful
[01:59:17] we have all the contact information
[01:59:19] helpline numbers websites all that good stuff
[01:59:21] oh yeah all the good stuff
[01:59:23] so
[01:59:25] the national Alzheimer's website is
[01:59:27] ALZ.org
[01:59:29] you can find all the resources there that
[01:59:31] we've mentioned
[01:59:33] the helpline is 1-800-272-3900
[01:59:35] it's 247
[01:59:37] and
[01:59:39] for 48 peaks our website is
[01:59:41] ALZ.org
[01:59:43] slash 48 peaks
[01:59:45] you can find us on instagram which is
[01:59:47] 48 peaks ALZ
[01:59:49] and we're also on facebook
[01:59:51] so you can find us there
[01:59:53] and one thing I forgot to mention is we do have a
[01:59:55] sponsorship program so if you know a company
[01:59:57] or people who might want to sponsor a peak
[01:59:59] reach out to our event manager
[02:00:01] Megan O'Neill
[02:00:03] and she can talk to you about what offerings we have
[02:00:05] I think I got everything
[02:00:07] did I miss anything Alana?
[02:00:09] no I think you got it all definitely
[02:00:11] a shout out for our social media
[02:00:13] if you don't follow it it's definitely
[02:00:15] it shares a lot of tips and resources
[02:00:17] but also shares a lot of fun about
[02:00:19] some of the events that are happening and how you can get involved
[02:00:21] if you're interested
[02:00:23] we also have a volunteer info session
[02:00:25] next week and it's on
[02:00:27] social if you're interested in volunteering
[02:00:29] with 48 peaks in some way
[02:00:31] I'll be presenting with Megan
[02:00:33] so you can get to hear from me again
[02:00:37] well we'll keep on
[02:00:39] plugging the event and spreading
[02:00:41] the word and I thank both of you
[02:00:43] for coming on Cindy and Alana
[02:00:45] I wish you the best and you two
[02:00:47] are great representatives of
[02:00:49] the organization for sure so thank you
[02:00:51] thank you Stom
[02:00:53] we appreciate your and Mike's support
[02:00:55] over the last two years
[02:00:57] it's been two years since we were first on
[02:00:59] Mike who?
[02:01:01] I don't know
[02:01:03] can we give Dave
[02:01:05] the hike of the week
[02:01:07] because he's not here
[02:01:09] actually we did that
[02:01:11] you're gonna laugh your head off it's so silly
[02:01:13] oh good
[02:01:17] alright so there it is
[02:01:19] 48 peaks coming up soon
[02:01:21] you can check out
[02:01:23] all the information will be in the show notes
[02:01:27] at slash your podcast dot com
[02:01:29] and again it's alts.org
[02:01:31] or alts.org
[02:01:33] right slash 48 peaks
[02:01:59] all right
[02:02:13] so this week guys I have a couple
[02:02:15] search and rescue here
[02:02:17] wasn't much there's like literally
[02:02:19] been nothing up here that's good
[02:02:21] yeah it's phenomenal
[02:02:23] the last one I was on was Welch Dickie
[02:02:25] that was it
[02:02:27] Welch Dickie?
[02:02:29] no wait a minute it was one after that
[02:02:31] you've been on a bunch
[02:02:33] the first one here is California Hiker
[02:02:35] you've probably seen this video
[02:02:37] but Hiker speaks out after being rescued
[02:02:39] from California Cliff
[02:02:41] have you seen the video of this one at all?
[02:02:43] I haven't
[02:02:45] alright well check it out
[02:02:47] a hiker who was stranded on the side of a cliff
[02:02:49] in San Francisco Bay area is speaking out
[02:02:51] telling his account
[02:02:53] and he says
[02:02:55] what was the beer crack it's all good
[02:02:57] I've been waiting
[02:02:59] this guy is cracking the beer
[02:03:01] we're on the home stretch right now
[02:03:05] I'm a notable hiker I do what I want
[02:03:07] that's right
[02:03:09] open invite anytime you can just barge in
[02:03:11] and jump on a mic
[02:03:13] so yeah check this out so I decided to
[02:03:15] climb the cliff you know be brave be adventurous
[02:03:17] and so I started climbing
[02:03:19] and about 40-50 feet up I got to a spar
[02:03:21] where all the rocks started crumbling
[02:03:23] and like
[02:03:25] every rock that I grabbed just gets removed from the cliff
[02:03:27] Crotini's girlfriend
[02:03:29] rushed to get help as the 22 year old
[02:03:31] man became trapped dangling more than
[02:03:33] 50 feet above the Pacific Ocean
[02:03:35] wow yeah it's pretty hard course
[02:03:37] so there's an actual video to it
[02:03:39] and they dropped a couple
[02:03:41] search and rescue members out of
[02:03:43] a helicopter and they
[02:03:45] got a harness on him and saved his butt
[02:03:47] but he said that he
[02:03:49] could barely hold on
[02:03:51] and he was about to let go
[02:03:53] but thankfully
[02:03:55] they got the harness and got him out
[02:03:57] to safety so these are the two rest guys here
[02:03:59] wow that's incredible
[02:04:01] yeah yeah and when they got to him
[02:04:03] they were just yelling at him do not let go
[02:04:05] do not let go
[02:04:07] unbelievable
[02:04:09] so another cliff fall here
[02:04:11] so Bryce Kinney and Hiker dies after falling
[02:04:13] at Utah park
[02:04:15] the husband of Florida
[02:04:17] oh this is bizarre it's a politician
[02:04:19] the husband of Florida's senate president
[02:04:21] died after falling while
[02:04:23] a couple was hiking in Utah
[02:04:25] anytime someone dies
[02:04:27] in his politics
[02:04:29] we know just before that red dog was on her forehead
[02:04:35] so John Pasadomo
[02:04:37] 72 was
[02:04:39] past tense a lawyer and former city
[02:04:41] counselor and vice mayor
[02:04:43] of Naples he and senate
[02:04:45] president Kathleen Pasadomo
[02:04:47] a Republican were visiting national parks
[02:04:49] on vacation less than
[02:04:51] a month after the Florida blah blah blah blah
[02:04:53] blah blah blah blah they went to Utah
[02:04:55] and
[02:04:57] oh my god it's getting into like there
[02:04:59] oh here we go here's the details so
[02:05:01] they were celebrating their 45th anniversary
[02:05:03] hiking in Bryce Canyon National Park
[02:05:05] when John fell Monday and suffered
[02:05:07] a head injury amongst other injuries
[02:05:09] and ultimately
[02:05:11] passed so it's a
[02:05:13] yeah yeah that's
[02:05:15] doesn't really give much more for detail
[02:05:17] there but if you can look at this picture
[02:05:19] I mean that's pretty stunning these
[02:05:21] that's beautiful I've been to Zion Canyon
[02:05:23] and Grand Canyon and stuff
[02:05:25] yeah I've seen that
[02:05:27] you went to Bryce? Bryce Zion
[02:05:29] oh wow Bryce near Zion
[02:05:31] it's fairly close
[02:05:33] it's like New Mexico
[02:05:35] everything's near each other
[02:05:37] if you can drive for 5 hours
[02:05:39] it's gorgeous area it's absolutely stunning
[02:05:41] we did
[02:05:43] no we didn't do Bryce it was just this
[02:05:45] Zion but it was similar
[02:05:47] similar yeah
[02:05:49] we had horses in Bryce which was a terrible idea
[02:05:51] oh really?
[02:05:53] for me it was
[02:05:55] you went down on horse?
[02:05:57] that's how rumors started
[02:05:59] I did not
[02:06:03] let's just be clear about that
[02:06:05] no no we gotta be clear
[02:06:07] my mind wanded
[02:06:09] he wanted to and I said nay
[02:06:11] I love this guy
[02:06:13] so no we did it for
[02:06:15] a honeymoon back in the late 90s
[02:06:17] let's go way back
[02:06:19] and we rented and it was just
[02:06:21] like just help
[02:06:23] it was like give me an ATV or something
[02:06:25] like that thing just craps and goes where it's
[02:06:27] what are we doing?
[02:06:29] you see turds all over the ground
[02:06:31] I didn't see any donkey well jackasses
[02:06:33] they climb up when they go up
[02:06:35] we were coming down we were doing a little bit
[02:06:37] not all the way down and their legs will slide
[02:06:39] off like they have four
[02:06:41] but literally just the
[02:06:43] ass end
[02:06:45] the leg will go off and you're just like
[02:06:47] what? and they just keep going
[02:06:49] well that's a horse and fun fact they use jackass
[02:06:51] as a Grand Canyon
[02:06:53] because it's the most short footed animal
[02:06:55] on the planet that's why they don't use horses
[02:06:57] really?
[02:06:59] interesting that and rams are tough to ride
[02:07:01] the goats
[02:07:03] the big bone goats
[02:07:05] they're a bitch to get on
[02:07:09] oh man
[02:07:11] this is good
[02:07:13] we checked out Antelope Canyon that was cool
[02:07:15] you ever see that? no I don't know what that is
[02:07:17] underground canyon it's pretty wild
[02:07:19] yeah we did that years ago and then we did
[02:07:21] Horseshoe Bend that was pretty
[02:07:23] we had to run down there before we had the sunset
[02:07:25] 6 million people
[02:07:27] even Zion was packed I bet you when you went
[02:07:29] it wasn't as busy it wasn't
[02:07:31] now you can't even breathe
[02:07:33] it was insane we think about it now
[02:07:35] you have to register to go there
[02:07:37] we kind of had to run to the place to some degree
[02:07:39] you're not going to have a run of any park
[02:07:41] no national park
[02:07:43] it's slammed
[02:07:45] but still beautiful
[02:07:47] it felt more personable at Zion
[02:07:49] because it was obviously small in the Grand Canyon
[02:07:51] but just to see the Grand Canyon
[02:07:53] was amazing
[02:07:55] but we did hike into it a little bit
[02:07:57] but I still want to go back and do rim to rim
[02:07:59] it depends on the rim you're wrong
[02:08:01] the north rim is the one that's not as populated
[02:08:03] it can be but that's where you have the skunk wipes
[02:08:05] they come in handy when you're hiking
[02:08:07] especially when you're hiking 20 something miles
[02:08:09] in that heat
[02:08:11] just for the rim
[02:08:13] but I don't know
[02:08:15] I don't understand
[02:08:17] he's laughing
[02:08:19] I'm very uncomfortable
[02:08:21] again do you want to go on the couch
[02:08:23] and we can talk about this
[02:08:25] for the viewers that can't see this
[02:08:27] it literally looks like a psychiatrist
[02:08:29] no it's got Freud written all over it
[02:08:31] did I tell you when Lynn came home
[02:08:33] last night and she actually freaking
[02:08:35] macramed a what do you want to
[02:08:37] oh I wish she was here
[02:08:39] she made me a little blanket to hang out
[02:08:41] while I'm watching TV I called little Lynn
[02:08:43] she did
[02:08:45] she crocheted me a blanket
[02:08:47] so you got to throw that in the back window of the car
[02:08:49] let me tell you about my grandchildren
[02:08:51] a box of tissues in the back
[02:08:53] they always have tissues
[02:08:55] but never in reach
[02:08:57] unless they're friends
[02:08:59] like my grandmother they always had them in her sleeve
[02:09:01] and her backpack and tissues
[02:09:03] and little hard candies
[02:09:05] we used to gamble for the candies
[02:09:07] we played cards for the candies
[02:09:09] does Lynn come here with treats and tributes
[02:09:11] and all these things
[02:09:13] every time she comes over
[02:09:15] she's got little things
[02:09:17] and treats and little ornaments
[02:09:19] and stickers
[02:09:21] she's always given stuff
[02:09:23] she's a walking geocache
[02:09:25] you don't get a better human than that
[02:09:27] she's awesome
[02:09:29] just a few
[02:09:31] she doesn't have a quilt like that
[02:09:33] no but I have a granny afghan now
[02:09:35] I can put over my legs when I'm watching them
[02:09:37] just so you know
[02:09:39] my grandmother did make that
[02:09:41] that's called a granny afghan
[02:09:43] isn't that wild
[02:09:45] that's old
[02:09:47] that is so old
[02:09:49] I was just a little wee little guy
[02:09:51] is the design
[02:09:53] they all made the same shit back
[02:09:55] isn't that funny
[02:09:57] the beauty of that is
[02:09:59] your toes don't go through the holes
[02:10:01] because the ones when they're learning at first
[02:10:03] your toes stick through it
[02:10:05] it's like you feel like a mackerel
[02:10:07] when they're out at sea in this process
[02:10:09] the cats love it
[02:10:11] the cats just like oh man
[02:10:13] they love it
[02:10:15] that thing right there probably took a week to make
[02:10:17] who knows
[02:10:19] that's at least six prices right
[02:10:21] remember that
[02:10:23] yo the next contestant on the price
[02:10:25] they would say come on down
[02:10:27] my grandmother would knit and just watch the shows
[02:10:29] TV was so
[02:10:31] we all the same age we grew up on Sanford and Sun
[02:10:33] and the prices right
[02:10:35] remember the gong show
[02:10:37] remember that guy with the bag over his head
[02:10:39] that's how I feel
[02:10:41] yeah he was cool man
[02:10:43] we grew up with the best stuff
[02:10:45] Hollywood squares
[02:10:47] what was the guy
[02:10:49] that controlled that dummy
[02:10:51] the ventriloquist
[02:10:53] remember there was madams
[02:10:55] madams
[02:10:57] we had his name
[02:10:59] remember that she was always on this
[02:11:01] that guy was funny she was funny
[02:11:03] yeah that was a funny show man
[02:11:05] I'm sold you had to buy stuff on Wheel of Fortune
[02:11:07] really?
[02:11:09] you had to get money and then shop after you run around
[02:11:11] you don't remember that?
[02:11:13] no wait
[02:11:15] I may look young but I'm an old man
[02:11:17] I'm not as old as I look
[02:11:19] I just did some hard living
[02:11:21] you would get the money
[02:11:23] and then they would take you on the street
[02:11:25] I'll take the roller-serts for $70
[02:11:27] because it was California and then they would go through
[02:11:29] and you had to spend the money you bought
[02:11:31] really? that's wild
[02:11:33] but if you go back in the
[02:11:35] 70s
[02:11:37] alright so I am older than you
[02:11:39] but if you go back in the 70s
[02:11:41] you look at some of the gifts years ago
[02:11:43] it was
[02:11:45] you know what I mean like the old chavette
[02:11:47] they give a car away it was a chavette
[02:11:49] I saw this podcast
[02:11:51] but what the hell is a chavette
[02:11:53] I was going to know
[02:11:55] search and rescue
[02:11:57] people needed to get out of
[02:11:59] Pinto's
[02:12:01] they would blow up
[02:12:03] they were hitting the back
[02:12:05] life was good
[02:12:07] we had station wagons with seats
[02:12:09] we had a seat belt
[02:12:11] metal child seats
[02:12:13] baby seats
[02:12:15] and we turned out completely
[02:12:17] fine
[02:12:19] we didn't wear helmets
[02:12:21] we flipped over the handlebars
[02:12:23] busted your face up
[02:12:25] your mother would be like
[02:12:27] that's what my mother did
[02:12:29] you go outside and be gone all day long
[02:12:31] remember put your play clothes on
[02:12:33] and get outside
[02:12:35] now they come home and just get in the video game room
[02:12:37] we didn't have a Atari though
[02:12:39] we made mosquito sick
[02:12:41] we didn't make us
[02:12:43] wash my hands take a shower
[02:12:45] fly up into the tree dummy
[02:12:47] it was different times
[02:12:49] you drink so much you crap green for three days
[02:12:51] oh my god mom I'm dying
[02:12:53] what happened huh
[02:12:55] yeah it's a whole different world right now
[02:12:57] it is changed
[02:12:59] scary
[02:13:01] I don't even want to talk about search and rescue anymore this is too funny
[02:13:03] alright well the last one here
[02:13:05] if you could try to stand topics
[02:13:07] that'd be great
[02:13:09] come on dude I'll go let us ruin this
[02:13:11] there's the last one
[02:13:13] I guess so hiker found dehydrated
[02:13:15] and under the influence rescued after falling
[02:13:17] into a ravine
[02:13:19] in Palm Springs
[02:13:21] Palm Springs
[02:13:23] Canyon Drive so this is California
[02:13:25] and this is pretty generic
[02:13:27] I mean
[02:13:29] literally that's the story but the reason I bring it up
[02:13:31] is because there's
[02:13:33] one comment
[02:13:35] right there
[02:13:37] I pulled this up a week ago and this comment
[02:13:39] you can see it somebody named
[02:13:41] concerned wrote
[02:13:43] drunk hiking
[02:13:45] that's it
[02:13:47] that's it
[02:13:49] that's the only comment
[02:13:51] I don't think that's his real name
[02:13:53] yeah concerned
[02:13:55] doesn't seem too concerned
[02:13:57] now you should only do that in a kayak
[02:13:59] and snow you should not hike
[02:14:01] it's PSA from a notable hiker right here
[02:14:03] you definitely don't want to hike drunk
[02:14:05] it's a bad thing
[02:14:07] no what I used to do before I can see this guy is ATV
[02:14:09] you can't get a DUI here in the woods
[02:14:11] who's going to bust you in the woods
[02:14:13] I was smartin' him at every turn
[02:14:15] we ran from the EPA one time
[02:14:17] it was like 10, 8 tip me
[02:14:19] my brother's a bunch of people I had my wife
[02:14:21] at the time she was before I married her
[02:14:23] she was speaking to Russian
[02:14:25] she was a Russian from Belarus
[02:14:27] she was illegal so we couldn't get stopped
[02:14:29] but we came up over in a bank
[02:14:31] we crossed 495 cops
[02:14:33] it was like midnight we were all ham and we had
[02:14:35] I used to have a cooler for food
[02:14:37] I used to have a cooler for my whiskey
[02:14:39] my ice and my own little glass
[02:14:41] so we used to get ham and out in the woods
[02:14:43] we'd ride all night we had trails everywhere
[02:14:45] but the little EPA cops were trying to find us
[02:14:47] as soon as we came up over the highway
[02:14:49] they were trying to grab us
[02:14:51] we were trying to get away from
[02:14:53] we got away
[02:14:55] that's before hiking years ago
[02:14:57] back in my hellion days
[02:14:59] now you're cleaning this over
[02:15:01] I drank a little not much
[02:15:03] I'm not a big fan
[02:15:05] so that's all I got for you guys
[02:15:07] Dave congratulations
[02:15:09] on your stunning victory tonight
[02:15:11] the noble hike
[02:15:13] the sky shagging up and glowing
[02:15:15] seriously that's huge
[02:15:17] it's big
[02:15:19] I didn't see that one coming
[02:15:21] I'm gonna sell all my stuff now I'm done
[02:15:23] I don't have to photoshop anymore
[02:15:25] hikes or anything
[02:15:27] that's an idea
[02:15:29] it takes forever to take the stock photo images off
[02:15:31] you know get that
