[00:03:20] search and rescue in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
[00:03:24] Here are your hosts, Mike and Stump.
[00:03:47] All right, I am recording.
[00:03:52] Yeah, I'm good here.
[00:03:54] Cracking a beer.
[00:03:55] Hell yeah.
[00:03:56] Right.
[00:03:57] Welcome to episode 148.
[00:03:58] I haven't been paying attention.
[00:03:59] 148.
[00:04:00] 148, that's 150 which is good.
[00:04:01] It's starting to lose track.
[00:04:02] Yeah, yeah.
[00:04:03] We're going to get this done quick.
[00:04:04] Too many.
[00:04:05] I've got to clean the house up tonight.
[00:04:06] My wife and kids are coming home tomorrow so I've been solo all week.
[00:04:18] Dishes and the whole thing vacuum.
[00:04:21] It's travel season for Mrs. Mike.
[00:04:23] She's once again down in Florida while I'm solo but every time she comes back, she does
[00:04:28] the glove test.
[00:04:30] There's too much dust around so I've got to clean up.
[00:04:34] That's awesome.
[00:04:36] Yeah, Mrs. Stump catches me every afternoon doing dishes when she pulls up into the
[00:04:42] driveway.
[00:04:43] Yeah, you've recrassed and you're like, oh crap, I've got to fold all that laundry
[00:04:47] that's been sitting there all week.
[00:04:48] So hopefully she's not listening to this.
[00:04:50] Oh man, it's hilarious.
[00:04:52] Well welcome back.
[00:04:53] Yeah, yeah, it's good to be back and yeah we'll talk about what you've been up to
[00:04:58] while I was gone but welcome to episode 148 of the Sounds Like a Search and Rescue
[00:05:04] podcast.
[00:05:06] This week we are highlighting a recent trip to the Tatara Mountains of Slovakia so
[00:05:12] we love the White Mountains in New Hampshire here but occasionally we do highlight
[00:05:16] other areas so took a recent trip to Poland and Slovakia so I'll break down some of the
[00:05:21] travel details, the logistics and the culture around this beautiful part of the world.
[00:05:25] Took a cool hike over there so we'll talk about that and maybe inspire some of you
[00:05:30] listeners to get out of, out of New Hampshire and go check out all the parts of the
[00:05:34] world.
[00:05:35] Plus recent hikes on Musalakie and WellSticky and it is tick season so we got some
[00:05:41] reminders for you.
[00:05:43] Stomp pulled another article to wrap up the eclipse that seems to be never ending and
[00:05:49] we've got a story about the head of a non-profit trail association has been accused of
[00:05:55] fraud so we'll break that story down and then we've got some highlights of
[00:05:59] New Hampshire's historical markers so I'm Mike.
[00:06:03] And I'm Stomp, let's get started.
[00:06:11] This has been Peace from Hiking Buddies. We are a 501c3 non-profit committed to reducing
[00:06:18] avoidable tragedies through education, impactful projects and fostering a community of support.

[00:06:34] This has been Peace from Hiking Buddies. We are a 501c3 non-profit committed to reducing
[00:06:40] avoidable tragedies through education, impactful projects and fostering a community of support.
[00:06:45] You can find out more at hikingbuddies.org. We wanted to say thank you to those who have
[00:06:50] supported our mission and most importantly say thanks to those who speak up, who
[00:06:54] ask questions and who are willing to provide guidance and assistance on the trails when
[00:06:58] you embody what it means to be a Hiking Buddy. And now for all my newer hikers out
[00:07:03] there, here's this episode's Hiking Buddies Quick Tip.
[00:07:13] Weather can change drastically within the same hike. Always prepare for more than
[00:07:19] what you think you need when navigating quickly changing weather systems.
[00:07:24] Always carry a rain layer as precipitation can greatly affect body temperature regulation.
[00:07:39] Let's get started.
[00:07:40] Hell yeah.
[00:07:41] Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I listened to the podcast last week. It was like off the rails.
[00:07:47] You know, you guys got to rain it in out of control.
[00:07:51] Different vibe.
[00:07:53] So I was, has Dave Schiff been added to our LLC yet? Is he an equal partner?
[00:07:59] Yeah, who knows man. Those guys are wild.
[00:08:02] Yes.
[00:08:03] Yeah, it's like I was looking for a little help and they both agreed and like, yeah,
[00:08:08] all right, great. So that was fun. It was a good time. Definitely a different
[00:08:12] dynamic with Dave mixed with Eric. Eric is a little calmer and more reserved
[00:08:17] when Dave isn't around, I would think. But yeah, it was a good time.
[00:08:23] So interesting response. It was a lot of fun.
[00:08:25] Oh yeah, yeah. They were great. I'm not happy with Dave though.
[00:08:28] How dear he's sneaking a notable hike while I'm not looking.
[00:08:32] Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's just too funny.
[00:08:35] Yeah, yeah.
[00:08:36] Oh man.
[00:08:37] So that's good.
[00:08:38] Notable hike.
[00:08:39] Well, they're not, I think they earned themselves a future, a future gig next time one of us
[00:08:44] is out of town. So they did well.
[00:08:46] Yeah. Yeah, no question. It was a lot of fun.
[00:08:49] But I gotta tell you, man, doing a podcast solo is a lot of work.
[00:08:53] I really missed your help doing the show notes and everything else.
[00:08:57] I feel like I was doing the podcast a whole week long.
[00:09:00] It's hard. It's hard, right?
[00:09:01] It is, man. It's a lot of work.
[00:09:03] I get a hand or two people like Stosh and all the other solo podcasters out there.
[00:09:08] It's a lot.
[00:09:09] It is.
[00:09:10] And I purposely broke up the 48 peaks with Eric and Dave on purpose.
[00:09:18] It just would have been too much.
[00:09:20] So I felt like I was doing the podcast all damn week.
[00:09:23] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:09:24] And for the listeners, so I think we've talked about this before,
[00:09:26] but for people that are curious, essentially what we do,
[00:09:29] so we record Thursday nights and we'll throw like,
[00:09:32] we have a group chat, me and Stomp,
[00:09:34] and then we'll throw some stuff in
[00:09:36] and then we get some content from our friends Al
[00:09:39] and I get some other folks that will throw some stuff my way for sure.
[00:09:44] But we'll typically work on the script during the week pretty casually
[00:09:49] and then record on Thursday nights and then Stomp does the editing
[00:09:52] and then I do the show notes and upload into the system.
[00:09:55] So we split the work, but if one of us has to do all that work,
[00:10:00] it's a lot.
[00:10:01] It's a lot.
[00:10:03] And I have a new appreciation for the show notes
[00:10:05] because I had to edit while simultaneously jotting down
[00:10:11] the time signatures and the notes and the hyperlinks and this and that.
[00:10:16] It's like, oh damn.
[00:10:17] See that?
[00:10:18] And that's why I give you a hard time about moment on the script,
[00:10:20] like put the hyperlinks nicely on the script
[00:10:23] so you can just paste them into the show notes.
[00:10:25] Yeah, it saved time.
[00:10:26] Yeah, it was crazy, but it was a good experience anyway.
[00:10:29] Yeah, well enough of our problems.
[00:10:33] Let's get onto the show here.
[00:10:34] So it's tick season, so Stomp explained this to me.
[00:10:37] You pulled an article on outside magazine that talks about
[00:10:42] hikers should try to smell like ants in order to repel ticks.
[00:10:47] Yeah, apparently a Canadian study found that chemicals excreted by ants
[00:10:52] keep ticks at bay.
[00:10:54] So this may be some new method to keep Lyme disease away from us,
[00:11:01] but it's not strange.
[00:11:02] It's pheromones essentially.
[00:11:04] Just these incredible sense that we don't perceive,
[00:11:07] but ants give off and apparently they repel ticks.
[00:11:10] So who knew?
[00:11:11] I don't know how they would apply this,
[00:11:13] but I guess we'll see some ant derived tick spray in the near future, right?
[00:11:18] Yeah, I would think so.
[00:11:19] Maybe they just put a bunch of ants in a blender and then make ant juice.
[00:11:24] I would assume that's how they do it, right?
[00:11:26] And they just extract them somehow.
[00:11:29] Yeah, who knows?
[00:11:31] It's very interesting.
[00:11:33] I want to be one of these scientists that studies this stuff.
[00:11:37] Like, how do you get a gig like that?
[00:11:39] Yeah, it is.
[00:11:40] I don't know how they...
[00:11:43] And I think that's one of the things about it.
[00:11:45] You knock people go into college and stuff,
[00:11:47] but I think that there's certain research grants where
[00:11:50] people can just play around with these ideas
[00:11:52] and sometimes they become products.
[00:11:55] Yeah, right.
[00:11:57] Who knows?
[00:11:58] It does say the odor is similar to vinegar,
[00:12:01] but only at higher concentrations.
[00:12:03] So maybe there's some connection there with vinegar.
[00:12:07] I don't know, but I'm definitely down for taking a bunch of ants
[00:12:10] and putting them in a blender and see what it smells like.
[00:12:17] Let me know how it goes.
[00:12:19] That would be a good science experiment.
[00:12:23] But it is funny, like now I've noticed like more and more
[00:12:26] over the last like four or five years,
[00:12:30] especially in springtime, I get these flyers in the mail
[00:12:34] and more and more like these pest control companies,
[00:12:38] they now are leading with tick control.
[00:12:41] So you'll get these...
[00:12:42] It used to be these flyers that would be like,
[00:12:44] oh, call AAA pest control if you have bats in your house
[00:12:49] or mice or whatever.
[00:12:50] And now it's like, oh, we offer tick treatment
[00:12:53] for lawn services and stuff like that.
[00:12:56] And I just wonder how effective those are.
[00:13:01] Yeah, who knows?
[00:13:02] I'd be nervous about what they're spraying too.
[00:13:05] Yeah, that is a big business here anyway.
[00:13:09] Yeah, I've just noticed it more and more over the last years.
[00:13:11] And then I also see like a lot of people
[00:13:13] on like the local town social media and they're like,
[00:13:15] you know, I run in my area and sometimes I'll comment
[00:13:19] about like, oh, go check out Woodson Farm or whatever.
[00:13:21] But and people will respond and they'll be like,
[00:13:23] oh, I don't want to go there because there's ticks
[00:13:26] and it's kind of sad.
[00:13:28] Like, you know, I understand people are nervous
[00:13:30] but don't not go outside because you're afraid of ticks.
[00:13:34] Mm-hmm.
[00:13:36] Yeah, the first time you have to pull one off of you successfully
[00:13:40] is the time you'll be over it.
[00:13:42] Yes.
[00:13:43] That's sort of where I am at the moment.
[00:13:45] Yeah.
[00:13:46] Yeah.
[00:13:47] I'll take the risk.
[00:13:48] I'll take the risk.
[00:13:49] Yeah, for sure.
[00:13:51] All right.
[00:13:52] Well, and speaking of taking the risk,
[00:13:54] two Wyoming hunters may be the first in the U.S.
[00:13:56] to die of zombie deer disease.
[00:13:59] Yeah, strange, right?
[00:14:00] Yeah, what is this?
[00:14:01] This is breaking as of it's today.
[00:14:04] This is clickbait for sure coming from the Daily Mail
[00:14:08] out of the UK but apparently two Wyoming hunters died
[00:14:13] from what is commonly known as chronic wasting disease
[00:14:18] which is a melody that deer populations suffer with.
[00:14:21] And I think it does it affect moose as well?
[00:14:26] I want to say maybe but I'm not 100% sure
[00:14:28] but nonetheless they're hyping it up
[00:14:31] calling it zombie deer disease
[00:14:33] but CWD apparently may have killed two hunters
[00:14:37] that ate venison recently out of Wyoming.
[00:14:41] So it's a pretty interesting story.
[00:14:43] I guess it's something that you might want to keep track of.
[00:14:47] Yeah, yeah.
[00:14:48] It's essentially like mad cow disease but for deer.
[00:14:51] Okay, yeah, yeah.
[00:14:53] Yeah, Kruchfeld-
[00:14:55] Kruchfeld-Jakob disease
[00:14:57] which is a wasting disease of the neurological system.
[00:15:02] Not a good thing to catch
[00:15:05] but apparently it's something that's on the radar.
[00:15:08] Okay, well I'll put this in the show notes
[00:15:10] and I think people should just be careful
[00:15:12] if they're eating deer.
[00:15:14] I guess cook it well.
[00:15:16] I suppose, yeah.
[00:15:17] Who knows?
[00:15:18] That's a little crazy.
[00:15:19] I did see a video not related to hiking
[00:15:21] but I saw a video of somebody overdosing on drugs
[00:15:24] and they literally looked like a zombie from The Walking Dead.
[00:15:29] I don't know what drugs they were on
[00:15:30] but the police were all surrounding the person
[00:15:32] and it was like this video about like,
[00:15:34] yeah I think it happened in Florida
[00:15:36] because it always is in Florida but it was pretty crazy.
[00:15:38] I was going to say San Fran.
[00:15:40] Oh San Francisco, yeah.
[00:15:42] Yeah, but I think this one was in Florida but it's scary.
[00:15:46] All right, stop.
[00:15:48] I wanted to just throw out a heads up
[00:15:50] so if any of the listeners have young people
[00:15:54] that need to get volunteer hours
[00:15:56] we're getting close to like graduation period
[00:15:58] so this is the time of the year where like kids realize
[00:16:01] that they have to do 40 hours of volunteer work
[00:16:03] and they've only done like two
[00:16:05] and they've got to scramble.
[00:16:07] So there is a volunteer opportunity
[00:16:10] in the White Mountains to clean up along the cank
[00:16:13] so this is White Mountain National Forest Trash Cleanup Event
[00:16:17] which is happening on April 27th
[00:16:22] which I believe is a Saturday stop.
[00:16:26] I think it's next week, yeah next Saturday.
[00:16:29] Yeah, so Saturday is the 20th.
[00:16:32] Yeah, so if you're interested you can,
[00:16:36] you can apply, I'll put a link in, it's under volunteer.gov
[00:16:41] and you can apply to either start
[00:16:44] at Lincoln Woods Visitor Center
[00:16:46] or the Soco Ranger Station in Conway along the cank
[00:16:50] and it looks like they want people to volunteer
[00:16:55] to pick up trash in and around the area
[00:16:57] so from 9 a.m. until about 12 or 1 p.m.
[00:17:02] please wear boots or sturdy footwear,
[00:17:04] good outdoor clothing for getting dirty
[00:17:06] and bring leather gloves if available.
[00:17:08] Nitrile gloves will be distributed
[00:17:11] and this is a rain or shine event
[00:17:14] so they want you to help pick up the trash
[00:17:18] and the point of contact is John Marinovsky
[00:17:22] and I'll include his email address if you're interested
[00:17:24] so it's a White Mountain National Forest Trash Cleanup
[00:17:27] and it's good if you just want to volunteer your time
[00:17:30] but also I would assume that this would qualify
[00:17:32] for volunteer hours for young people
[00:17:34] if they have to do that for their school.
[00:17:37] So it's specific to the cank?
[00:17:39] Yeah, it looks like it's cleaning up along the cank
[00:17:42] starting from Lincoln Woods and then Soco
[00:17:45] and I'm assuming they probably have vehicles
[00:17:47] where they're going to drop people off in certain areas
[00:17:49] but I think a lot of people drop their shot glasses
[00:17:52] and beer cans or the drive-in over the...
[00:17:55] I hate it.
[00:17:56] I hate it, yeah.
[00:17:57] It's so terrible.
[00:17:59] It's everywhere.
[00:18:01] I mean we have our share here too
[00:18:04] like right at Weltsdick area.
[00:18:06] All the people that just come up
[00:18:08] they just throw trash on the sides of the roads
[00:18:10] like I've been out there myself cleaning crap up
[00:18:13] it never ends, unbelievable.
[00:18:15] I know there's...
[00:18:16] I actually run more in the woods now locally
[00:18:18] but there is like one route that I do
[00:18:20] that's more along the road if it's like bad weather
[00:18:23] and I just wonder about these people
[00:18:27] but there's this whole section
[00:18:29] of there's no houses around
[00:18:31] but there's this whole section where there's
[00:18:33] hundreds of these nips, you know those like
[00:18:35] small alcohol bottles.
[00:18:37] Yeah.
[00:18:38] So it must be like one person that just like
[00:18:40] gets those nips and drinks them on their way home
[00:18:42] from work or wherever
[00:18:44] and then they know where to throw them
[00:18:46] and they just collect them inside of the road
[00:18:48] and it's just like...
[00:18:49] first of all you're drinking and driving
[00:18:51] second of all you're littering so it's a double whammy.
[00:18:54] Right.
[00:18:56] So you should be out there with a trash bag
[00:18:58] while you're jogging
[00:19:00] just picking that stuff up.
[00:19:02] I get to be...
[00:19:03] I'm like going to touch it.
[00:19:04] Like I'm like these people have hepatitis or something.
[00:19:06] Oh.
[00:19:08] Right.
[00:19:10] All right, stop.
[00:19:12] So we had a big...
[00:19:13] This is a big moment.
[00:19:14] You should probably put like a happy birthday drop
[00:19:16] or something in here
[00:19:18] but our assistant to the assistant producer,
[00:19:22] Zylo, the new cat.
[00:19:24] The terror has turned one years old today.
[00:19:28] Yeah, can you believe it?
[00:19:30] He's still old.
[00:19:31] So I'm a bad dad at the moment
[00:19:33] doing a podcast
[00:19:34] which I should be celebrating with
[00:19:36] Mrs. Stomp and Zylo downstairs
[00:19:38] but they're downstairs
[00:19:40] having extra wetties, I guess,
[00:19:42] wet food
[00:19:44] but happy birthday Zylo.
[00:19:46] He's a great little kitty.
[00:19:48] I don't even think twice about that thing
[00:19:50] until it like walks across my screen.
[00:19:54] Well I locked him out tonight.
[00:19:56] I just needed a little
[00:19:58] little bit of air between me and the kitties.
[00:20:00] So you have two cats.
[00:20:02] You have Zylo and then you have Daphne.
[00:20:04] Does Daphne get along with Zylo now
[00:20:06] or they standoffish?
[00:20:08] Don't forget Luna.
[00:20:10] Oh, you have Luna too.
[00:20:12] Yeah, so two tuxedos,
[00:20:14] Luna and Daphne and then Zylo.
[00:20:16] Daphne's like the protective...
[00:20:18] Zylo is a ginger cat, right?
[00:20:20] Correct.
[00:20:22] Yeah, orange and white
[00:20:24] and then two tuxedos.
[00:20:26] Luna hates both of them.
[00:20:28] She's the oldest, she's the elder cat
[00:20:30] and then Daphne is very protective
[00:20:32] of Zylo to a degree.
[00:20:34] Daphne is like the vigilant one
[00:20:36] that's up all night just making sure everybody's safe.
[00:20:38] Yeah.
[00:20:40] Yeah, it's interesting.
[00:20:42] It's fun.
[00:20:44] In related cat news
[00:20:48] we have Flokey
[00:20:50] who is the white mountains piking cat
[00:20:52] and apparently
[00:20:54] so our friend Al had sent over
[00:20:58] a link to this story
[00:21:00] about a rescue that happened in Colorado.
[00:21:06] The Rocky Mountain Rescue Group
[00:21:08] shared a photo on social media
[00:21:10] saying that they were moonlighting
[00:21:12] as
[00:21:14] Mew-teen...
[00:21:16] How do you say that?
[00:21:18] It's meow-t-en...
[00:21:20] Meow-ten rescuers.
[00:21:22] Yeah, like
[00:21:24] mountain but meow.
[00:21:26] Yeah, they're ripping off Mrs. Tump.
[00:21:28] Apparently so they...
[00:21:30] Meow-ten.
[00:21:32] Rescueers.
[00:21:34] They rescued two climbers in their cat
[00:21:36] from the first flat iron
[00:21:38] in Boulder, Colorado.
[00:21:40] So the photo shows
[00:21:42] two climbers sitting perched high
[00:21:44] on the famous Rocky Peak
[00:21:46] with the cat whose name is Link.
[00:21:48] So apparently rescuers
[00:21:50] gave them headlamps and lowered all three
[00:21:52] to safety in a video
[00:21:54] on Link's Instagram account.
[00:21:56] He and his owner, Austin, can be seen
[00:21:58] climbing the Montezuma Tower
[00:22:00] in the Garden of Gods
[00:22:02] in Colorado Springs.
[00:22:04] So apparently they take this cat out.
[00:22:06] I don't know what happened
[00:22:08] with the details on the rescue
[00:22:10] but they don't really give a lot of details
[00:22:12] but the cat climbs with them.
[00:22:14] It's a pretty good size cat too, Stomp.
[00:22:16] Oh yeah, yeah, I'm looking at the pics.
[00:22:18] That's about the size of
[00:22:20] Xylophishore. He's probably like a good
[00:22:22] 15, 20 pounds.
[00:22:24] Yeah, yeah, and it's a good-looking cat.
[00:22:26] Looks a little bit like Flokey.
[00:22:28] He has his own Instagram account so
[00:22:30] I feel like
[00:22:32] Flokey should follow
[00:22:34] Link and Link should follow Flokey.
[00:22:36] So
[00:22:38] we'll see. Apparently
[00:22:40] this cat is
[00:22:42] a year and a half old.
[00:22:44] It was adopted in Texas, living in Colorado.
[00:22:46] And
[00:22:48] is a climber
[00:22:50] and adventure breaker of boundaries
[00:22:52] and stigmas and the lover
[00:22:54] of boobs.
[00:22:58] Okay.
[00:23:00] And the cat's owner has some pretty good
[00:23:02] photos of
[00:23:04] the cat. Looks like the cat made it to the Grand Canyon.
[00:23:06] The cat's got all kinds of
[00:23:08] Rocky Mountain National Park
[00:23:10] as a whole thing here so.
[00:23:12] Aw, so cute. What I really want to know
[00:23:14] is did they get out of a bill?
[00:23:16] I don't know.
[00:23:18] Let's get to the real
[00:23:20] Jews here, right? Yeah, I
[00:23:22] don't really know if they did or not.
[00:23:24] It doesn't give a lot of details. It's just like
[00:23:26] the cat was on a rescue. Go look at
[00:23:28] our Instagram page.
[00:23:30] Yeah, yeah, sort of weird. Like how to
[00:23:32] get out of a bill. Yes. Bring a cat.
[00:23:34] Yeah.
[00:23:36] All right. So wrapping up
[00:23:38] Eclipse News Stomp you pulled one more article
[00:23:40] that
[00:23:42] metrics on the volume of vehicles that were
[00:23:44] around for the eclipse.
[00:23:46] Yeah, they're saying that
[00:23:48] 50,000 more cars than
[00:23:50] usual were heading south
[00:23:52] after the New Hampshire
[00:23:54] Eclipse.
[00:23:56] That's a good amount of volume.
[00:23:58] I mean, I was definitely hearing
[00:24:00] rumors and stories Monday
[00:24:02] into Tuesday, but 54K
[00:24:04] that's a lot of cars
[00:24:06] clogging up
[00:24:08] the arteries. Yes it is.
[00:24:10] Kind of glad I missed it. Yeah, it is.
[00:24:14] Yeah, you didn't miss much. It was
[00:24:16] pretty cool but
[00:24:18] that is the last final
[00:24:20] eclipse update that you will hear
[00:24:22] from us for another 21 years.
[00:24:24] Yes.
[00:24:26] Stay tuned for episode 1,132.
[00:24:30] Right. Full AI
[00:24:32] Mike and Stomp coming at ya.
[00:24:36] I was listening to a podcast about that. Like there was
[00:24:38] somebody who was talking
[00:24:40] about
[00:24:42] they created an AI version
[00:24:44] of somebody who
[00:24:46] died and I was like, well that would be perfect
[00:24:48] for us. Like you could load up all of our
[00:24:50] and then our family members could
[00:24:52] just like ask us questions
[00:24:54] and we would answer. Right.
[00:24:56] No, I think that I think we're at that point
[00:24:58] now. Yeah, we can live forever.
[00:25:00] Correct. Yeah, there's
[00:25:02] enough I would assume there's enough content
[00:25:04] already to pull that
[00:25:06] off. Maybe not.
[00:25:08] I don't know.
[00:25:10] In and around the hiking topic, I think
[00:25:12] that yeah, whoever would take us
[00:25:14] over when we're long gone and buried
[00:25:16] would be fine.
[00:25:18] They could carry on the slasher
[00:25:20] name into the millennia.
[00:25:22] AI.
[00:25:24] Alright.
[00:25:26] So, you pulled this. So this next article
[00:25:28] is 21 types of hikers. So you
[00:25:30] understand when you pull these articles
[00:25:32] like this is simply like affiliate
[00:25:34] marketing clickbait nonsense, right?
[00:25:36] Oh, totally. You know what's even
[00:25:38] funnier about it? There are
[00:25:40] like a dozen articles that say
[00:25:42] five types of hikers, 12 types
[00:25:44] of hikers, 17 types
[00:25:46] of hikers. So I found the one with the
[00:25:48] highest number and that's 21 types
[00:25:50] of hikers. So this article is such
[00:25:52] garbage but it's kind of funny.
[00:25:54] So anyway, so there's 21 types of hikers.
[00:25:56] So I'll just run them down quickly and
[00:25:58] like they there's so much crossover that's
[00:26:00] ridiculous but they got the weekend warrior
[00:26:02] I think is like people that do
[00:26:04] backpacking overnight, you know
[00:26:06] gear junkies which
[00:26:08] I'm probably one of
[00:26:10] outdoorsmen
[00:26:12] which I don't really know what that is. The nature
[00:26:14] lovers, those are the photographers
[00:26:16] the mountain man
[00:26:18] or like extreme people, the ultra
[00:26:20] light back. So this ultra light
[00:26:22] backpacker, this article
[00:26:24] it basically gives a
[00:26:26] summary of each type and then it will
[00:26:28] like recommend a piece of gear that you
[00:26:30] can buy. And the ultra light
[00:26:32] backpacker, they're like the
[00:26:34] ultra light backpacker is someone who takes a minimalist
[00:26:36] approach to a backpack. Then they
[00:26:38] have a picture of a guy wearing a Nike
[00:26:40] like string bag
[00:26:44] that's not ultra light and then
[00:26:46] they have a link to this like
[00:26:48] Zomaki
[00:26:50] ultra light backpack that comes
[00:26:52] in like 27 different colors and is
[00:26:54] a plastic backpack
[00:26:56] and it's $14
[00:26:58] right. So
[00:27:00] like no one's going to use that. I might buy
[00:27:02] this thing just to see what it's like but I mean
[00:27:04] it's just yeah we could do a gear
[00:27:06] review. Yeah
[00:27:08] so okay so anyway so
[00:27:10] I went through six of these
[00:27:12] so here's the day hiker which again
[00:27:14] that's us. There's a beach bomb
[00:27:16] which I don't know what the hell that is
[00:27:18] that's like Mrs. Mike I don't know who that is
[00:27:20] the thru hiker, okay
[00:27:22] the casual camper so that's a car camper
[00:27:24] the campfire
[00:27:26] sir I don't know what that is
[00:27:28] then there's a car camper
[00:27:30] then there's a back country beginner
[00:27:32] a family adventurer an urban
[00:27:34] adventurer I don't know what that is
[00:27:36] a social light and outdoors
[00:27:38] enthusiast an adventure racer
[00:27:40] a wilderness first responder
[00:27:42] stomp
[00:27:44] globetrotter that's me
[00:27:46] international traveler that's me too
[00:27:48] that's you. Yeah
[00:27:50] so I don't know. So yeah
[00:27:52] there's several categories per person here
[00:27:54] I think the urban adventurer
[00:27:56] might be the Boston Hills
[00:27:58] type of guy like ginger beard
[00:28:00] hitting Boston Hills or what you
[00:28:02] see it
[00:28:04] family adventure would be like the dad
[00:28:06] venture crew. Yeah
[00:28:08] the Ben's crew yeah.
[00:28:10] But yeah I mean it's
[00:28:12] alright but there is a ton of crossover
[00:28:14] you're right. Alright well I will
[00:28:16] I'll link this in the show notes and people can
[00:28:18] check it out but it's just like the products that
[00:28:20] are associated with each one of these are a complete
[00:28:22] garbage but
[00:28:26] that's funny.
[00:28:28] Alright so stomp
[00:28:30] speaking of technology so we were talking about AI
[00:28:32] earlier we've done a couple of segments where
[00:28:34] we've talked about these exoskeleton
[00:28:36] so an exoskeleton is
[00:28:38] a device that will
[00:28:40] basically wrap around your waist or your
[00:28:42] back and then
[00:28:44] will allow for
[00:28:46] enhanced
[00:28:48] movement of your limbs
[00:28:50] That's incredible. Yeah yeah yeah so there's
[00:28:52] this
[00:28:54] Chinese start-up company
[00:28:56] that is working
[00:28:58] on a lightweight
[00:29:00] exoskeleton
[00:29:02] to give people superhuman hiking
[00:29:04] ability
[00:29:06] So
[00:29:08] it's like fallout
[00:29:10] it's like those
[00:29:12] Yeah exactly but not like a full robot
[00:29:14] frame but it's an AI driven
[00:29:16] outdoor exoskeleton
[00:29:18] and
[00:29:20] the
[00:29:22] X1 from Chinese start-up
[00:29:24] Dinesis
[00:29:26] is a motorized AI that wraps around your
[00:29:28] waist and thighs
[00:29:30] to upgrade your anatomy with 600
[00:29:32] watts of walking, hiking, scrambling
[00:29:34] climbing and running power
[00:29:36] so
[00:29:38] it shoulders up to 83 pounds
[00:29:40] of load
[00:29:42] and empowers users with speeds up to
[00:29:44] 16 miles an hour and then packs down
[00:29:46] all
[00:29:48] so it doesn't say how much it weighs
[00:29:50] it's a kickstarter
[00:29:52] oh no here it is
[00:29:54] it's 3.5 pounds
[00:30:00] and
[00:30:02] you can get a little bit bigger that gives an extra 100 watts
[00:30:04] but I'll be curious about this
[00:30:06] we'll see I think these are all prototypes
[00:30:08] but eventually I do think
[00:30:10] that these exoskeletons will become a factor
[00:30:12] in the future so imagine
[00:30:14] when we're old and can't
[00:30:16] barely walk if we can slap one of these exoskeletons
[00:30:18] on to go hiking that'd be awesome
[00:30:20] Yeah I see it
[00:30:22] applying to that but not the people
[00:30:24] they're showing in these images
[00:30:26] these people are young and fit
[00:30:28] and they definitely don't need the boost
[00:30:30] of a robot pushing them along
[00:30:32] you know what I mean?
[00:30:34] Yeah these guys are like hipster hikers
[00:30:36] they don't need it
[00:30:38] Oh totally I see two other issues too
[00:30:40] like how do you control it
[00:30:42] is it responsive to your
[00:30:44] does it activate when you move
[00:30:46] or is it just a program
[00:30:48] and B I can imagine one hell of a pack rash
[00:30:50] because the thing goes around your waist
[00:30:52] can you imagine the pack rash
[00:30:54] if you were trying to do like a
[00:30:56] Zealand bonds traverse with that thing on
[00:31:00] No thanks
[00:31:02] Yeah it'd be interesting to see what the final
[00:31:06] the final form becomes of these things
[00:31:08] because I think that this is just
[00:31:10] probably to
[00:31:12] yeah that puts too much stress on your waist
[00:31:14] and you lower back
[00:31:16] Oh tons
[00:31:18] They may have gotten the idea from
[00:31:20] the rehab world because even just today
[00:31:22] I was looking at a
[00:31:24] small tens unit for a patient
[00:31:26] and it's called a cross
[00:31:28] walker
[00:31:30] cycler and you put them on either leg
[00:31:32] and it's a cycle so it makes you move
[00:31:34] your legs based upon the stimulation
[00:31:36] it cycles back and forth
[00:31:38] so they may have gotten the idea from this
[00:31:40] but yeah interesting times
[00:31:42] and an additional spur
[00:31:44] I know this is off topic
[00:31:46] but have you seen the new atlas that Boston
[00:31:48] Dynamics has produced it's all battery
[00:31:50] driven and no more hydraulics
[00:31:52] Have you seen this video? I did see that
[00:31:54] Yeah it was like weird like the thing like flipped
[00:31:56] over and stuff and matter of fact
[00:31:58] my old my old office
[00:32:00] I think Boston
[00:32:02] Dynamic took over like six or seven of those floors
[00:32:04] so I don't go in too often
[00:32:06] I do go in and I'd love to spot one of them
[00:32:08] with robots
[00:32:10] Dude it's definitely
[00:32:12] a new level of
[00:32:14] robot engineering these things are incredible
[00:32:16] now super agile
[00:32:18] just the mobility
[00:32:20] of the joints
[00:32:22] it's really impressive and scary at the same time
[00:32:24] When are we gonna put like
[00:32:26] automatic weapons
[00:32:28] on these things and like when are we gonna go full black
[00:32:30] mirror with these?
[00:32:32] Totally yeah I think we're at that point
[00:32:34] Sure unfortunately but
[00:32:38] Scary
[00:32:40] Wild
[00:32:42] Alright well there you go
[00:32:44] We'll see. Alright Stomp so we got a big weekend
[00:32:46] we're going out Saturday night
[00:32:48] we got the AMC awards so we're gonna be there
[00:32:50] we got a table set up
[00:32:52] we've got
[00:32:54] Valkylus Ventilation Frames
[00:32:56] that we're gonna be selling at the table
[00:32:58] so I just posted tonight
[00:33:00] on our Facebook group so if anybody wants to
[00:33:02] pre-order one
[00:33:04] they're gonna be a little bit cheaper discounted
[00:33:06] so $30
[00:33:08] and we'll have a bunch at the table
[00:33:10] so
[00:33:12] swing by if you're there
[00:33:14] and you can get stickers
[00:33:16] and you can even say
[00:33:18] Happy Anniversary to Mr. and Mrs. Stomp
[00:33:20] and then we're gonna have microphones
[00:33:22] and we'll interview people
[00:33:24] they can tell their story about what inspired them
[00:33:26] to do the 4000 footers
[00:33:28] Pretty neat
[00:33:30] Exeter in New Hampshire
[00:33:32] Doors open at 3 I do not know
[00:33:34] if you can go in if you don't ever take it or not
[00:33:36] I'm not quite sure about that
[00:33:38] but yeah looking forward to saying hi to everybody
[00:33:40] and like Mike said we will have mics up
[00:33:42] recording and
[00:33:44] yeah it's gonna be a good time
[00:33:46] low stress and again shout out to Mrs. Stomp
[00:33:48] because it is our anniversary
[00:33:50] and we're actually gonna take off after
[00:33:52] after the
[00:33:54] main table time and head out to a local hotel
[00:33:56] You should check out
[00:33:58] the political like Portsmouth or the Wentworth or something
[00:34:02] You nailed it you called it
[00:34:04] We're going to the Wentworth
[00:34:06] You are okay yeah
[00:34:08] That's perfect
[00:34:10] Yeah so yeah it's gonna be great
[00:34:12] I'm not gonna stick around for the awards
[00:34:14] but that's all good because I don't want to get murdered by my wife
[00:34:16] Yeah I can clean up the table and all that stuff
[00:34:18] So that's perfect
[00:34:20] So romantic Stomp
[00:34:22] Oh yeah hey
[00:34:24] Well it's our anniversary
[00:34:26] Number 11 keep that spark
[00:34:28] Sparking
[00:34:30] Yeah no kidding huh
[00:34:32] Alright
[00:34:34] So this is a weird story
[00:34:38] The former head of
[00:34:40] the White Mountain Trail nonprofit
[00:34:42] has been accused of financial
[00:34:44] fraud
[00:34:46] So there's a trial
[00:34:48] set for this summer
[00:34:50] Federal authorities alleged that Melanie
[00:34:52] Loose
[00:34:54] Campton base White Mountains trail
[00:34:56] collective
[00:34:58] I feel like Stomp we probably like given plugs to this group
[00:35:00] over the years
[00:35:02] and said like you know go help them out or whatever
[00:35:04] but apparently the head of this
[00:35:06] legally spent more than
[00:35:08] $30,000 on the group's credit card
[00:35:10] and PayPal account
[00:35:12] on personal expenses
[00:35:14] on multiple occasions
[00:35:16] in 2021
[00:35:18] She's also
[00:35:20] accused of fabricating a document
[00:35:22] purporting to show that she had successfully obtained
[00:35:24] $475,000
[00:35:26] in grants
[00:35:28] on behalf of the nonprofit
[00:35:30] and because she was able
[00:35:32] to
[00:35:34] claim that she had obtained these
[00:35:36] grants it earned her a $20,000
[00:35:38] performance bonus so she must have had
[00:35:40] like a performance bonus
[00:35:42] kicker in her contract
[00:35:44] with the board
[00:35:46] and you know she just basically falsified documents
[00:35:48] so that she could get that money
[00:35:50] she's also accused of
[00:35:52] submitting false records
[00:35:54] to obtain a COVID-19 federal
[00:35:56] loan on behalf of her website
[00:35:58] development company
[00:36:00] which is called Prima Web Design
[00:36:02] so according
[00:36:04] to a grand jury from December
[00:36:06] Loose knowingly and willfully
[00:36:08] executed and attempted
[00:36:10] to execute a scheme
[00:36:12] and artifice to defraud
[00:36:14] a local bank
[00:36:16] when she more than doubled her
[00:36:18] transactional revenue for the company
[00:36:20] so she's got two things going on
[00:36:22] she's scamming the nonprofit
[00:36:24] and then she's using her web design company
[00:36:26] to scam loan applications
[00:36:28] so
[00:36:30] the crazy thing about this
[00:36:34] so she pled not guilty
[00:36:36] and the lawyers like the lawyers being all
[00:36:38] lawyerly and saying that we're addressing the allegations
[00:36:40] against her through the court process
[00:36:42] and Miss Loose is reserving her comments
[00:36:44] until the time comes for her to speak in court
[00:36:46] good luck
[00:36:48] here's the crazy thing is that
[00:36:50] in 2012
[00:36:52] Loose had pled guilty to four counts
[00:36:54] of felony theft and misuse of a credit card
[00:36:56] after stealing
[00:36:58] $185,000
[00:37:00] from a medical practice in Plymouth
[00:37:02] so this girl has been grifting
[00:37:04] her whole life
[00:37:06] and she worked as an office manager there
[00:37:08] she had to serve 12 months in the Grafton
[00:37:10] County House of Corrections
[00:37:12] and she was ordered to pay restitution
[00:37:14] so
[00:37:16] it's not clear whether the White Mountain Trail
[00:37:18] Collective Board of Directors was aware
[00:37:20] of the previous conviction for embezzlement
[00:37:22] so this is the thing about these nonprofits
[00:37:24] these small nonprofits
[00:37:26] they don't always
[00:37:28] have the controls they need in place
[00:37:30] like did they do a background check on her
[00:37:32] they probably would have caught the criminal
[00:37:34] conviction if they had done a background check
[00:37:36] probably not, who knows
[00:37:38] but apparently this was founded
[00:37:40] as a nonprofit in 2019
[00:37:42] and they worked with partner agencies
[00:37:44] like the U.S. Forest Service
[00:37:46] and the AMC as well as some smaller
[00:37:48] trail conservation organizations to raise money
[00:37:50] to restore
[00:37:52] heavily used trails and they did a
[00:37:54] significant involvement in
[00:37:56] Crawford Path
[00:37:58] in the Mount Washington
[00:38:00] region so and they did a bunch of other
[00:38:02] good stuff I'm sure there was plenty
[00:38:04] of work that they did but
[00:38:06] unfortunately
[00:38:08] one bad apple can really ruin it for everybody
[00:38:10] but there was an audit by
[00:38:14] the I guess they did an audit
[00:38:16] on the group and it shows that
[00:38:18] allegedly fabricated bank statements
[00:38:20] by adding digits
[00:38:22] to make it appear that the
[00:38:24] nonprofit had more cash on hand than
[00:38:26] it actually did by as much as 300,000
[00:38:28] cause it shot some
[00:38:30] trail collective
[00:38:32] yeah she was basically trying to land short
[00:38:34] term loans and she was saying that
[00:38:36] they had way more money on hand
[00:38:38] than they did but she was using the credit card
[00:38:42] to pay for personal expenses including car
[00:38:44] repairs and veterinary bills
[00:38:46] dude I can tell you one thing
[00:38:48] the trail collective is going to have a new
[00:38:50] board
[00:38:52] it's shut down it's done
[00:38:54] is it done? I don't blame them
[00:38:56] yeah they dissolved in 2023
[00:38:58] so
[00:39:00] for good reason I'm sure
[00:39:02] I will be really interested
[00:39:04] to see what comes out in the court proceedings
[00:39:06] and
[00:39:08] wow that's hardcore
[00:39:10] yeah
[00:39:12] it'll be interesting to follow this
[00:39:14] so again her name is Melanie
[00:39:16] Loose
[00:39:18] and she's been grifting
[00:39:20] since 2012
[00:39:22] at least
[00:39:24] which is like not
[00:39:26] that uncut like she was an office manager
[00:39:28] for medical like I've heard that story
[00:39:30] over and over again over the years
[00:39:32] like these small businesses get
[00:39:34] locked in by an office manager
[00:39:36] or like
[00:39:38] an accountant that no one's paying attention
[00:39:40] to things and they just
[00:39:42] they're going on cruises and they spend
[00:39:44] in the credit card
[00:39:46] so somebody has to fill the gap here
[00:39:48] I wonder if there's any other organization out there
[00:39:50] doing this work
[00:39:52] the mission of the non-profit seem pretty noble
[00:39:54] yeah
[00:39:56] next week I'll pull together a list
[00:39:58] of all of the trail maintenance
[00:40:00] I mean there's the
[00:40:02] there's the different
[00:40:04] trail groups
[00:40:06] like Randolph Mountain Club
[00:40:08] there's Wannalansett
[00:40:10] the AMC, the Forest Service
[00:40:12] they're always looking for volunteers
[00:40:14] but I'll pull all the official
[00:40:16] trail maintainers
[00:40:18] options for people
[00:40:20] yeah
[00:40:22] wow that's hardcore man
[00:40:24] I just can't believe a board
[00:40:26] would not know that she spent
[00:40:28] time by bars
[00:40:30] well I would imagine like there had to
[00:40:32] have been a bunch of red flags that
[00:40:34] like I guarantee in these cases like
[00:40:36] it's never like oh I'm shocked
[00:40:38] out of the blue they guarantee there was people on the
[00:40:40] board that were like something's up with this one
[00:40:42] I don't have a good feeling and
[00:40:44] they you know they they didn't track it down
[00:40:46] they could have probably just googled their name
[00:40:48] and found although who knows these people
[00:40:50] change their names around so you don't know
[00:40:54] wow that's hardcore
[00:40:56] I love it yeah it's too funny
[00:40:58] yeah anyway
[00:41:00] there we go all right so moving
[00:41:02] on this guy from Britain
[00:41:04] becomes the first person to run the length
[00:41:06] of Africa
[00:41:08] yeah so running the length of
[00:41:10] hold my beer Boston Marathon
[00:41:12] it's like this is incredible
[00:41:14] so is that is that east to west
[00:41:16] or north to south
[00:41:18] um I
[00:41:20] assume it would be north to south
[00:41:22] but let me see here
[00:41:24] oh yeah it is north to south
[00:41:26] 352 days
[00:41:28] 9900 miles
[00:41:30] and uh
[00:41:32] unbelievable
[00:41:34] over 16
[00:41:36] countries because you know Africa is just
[00:41:38] packed with different countries across the way
[00:41:40] he's 27 year old
[00:41:42] endurance athlete from
[00:41:44] Worthing west Sussex so
[00:41:46] wow talk about
[00:41:48] upping the ante for these long endurance events
[00:41:50] that's pretty amazing yeah
[00:41:52] yeah and he looks like he stands out
[00:41:54] like a sore thumb in Africa because he's like this
[00:41:56] redheaded like viking looking dude
[00:41:58] we're running through the heart of
[00:42:00] Africa
[00:42:02] he looks like you know he looks like a younger
[00:42:04] version of the janitor from the Simpsons
[00:42:10] yeah you're right
[00:42:12] oh god so there you go
[00:42:14] he had a shrubbery down from his shoulder
[00:42:16] you know what's crazy is like I'm surprised
[00:42:18] like I guess I get it like you can't
[00:42:20] so he basically went north to south
[00:42:22] or south to north
[00:42:24] and um
[00:42:26] he hugged the west coast of Africa
[00:42:28] for the most part
[00:42:30] but he went to some sketchy areas like he went
[00:42:32] through the Republic of Congo he went through
[00:42:34] the Ivy Coast
[00:42:36] and then I think is it Maritania
[00:42:38] that's dangerous too and in Algeria
[00:42:40] you got to go through the desert there so
[00:42:42] oh yeah
[00:42:44] yeah good for him
[00:42:46] well that's quite the adventure
[00:42:48] I will never be doing that I guarantee you
[00:42:50] nope
[00:42:52] nope that is brave
[00:42:54] yeah amazing stuff
[00:42:56] okay
[00:42:58] we have a public service
[00:43:00] announcement
[00:43:02] Michael Petraca from the white
[00:43:04] mountain national forest sent us a message
[00:43:06] and I just wanted to alert
[00:43:08] the listenership that
[00:43:10] any recreationalists hiking up
[00:43:12] Zealand road past the
[00:43:14] sugarloaf campgrounds later this month
[00:43:16] that there will be equipment
[00:43:18] and personnel working on the water
[00:43:20] tank across from the sugarloaf campground
[00:43:22] so they'll be on the road
[00:43:24] and we'll do all that they
[00:43:26] can to keep a clear path
[00:43:28] but just be aware be careful and respectful
[00:43:30] of the work being done
[00:43:32] this will begin Saturday
[00:43:34] April 20th to June 1st
[00:43:36] and then later in the season
[00:43:38] there will be efforts
[00:43:40] to do some work on the bridge
[00:43:42] beyond the sugarloaf campgrounds
[00:43:44] as well
[00:43:46] and
[00:43:48] they will keep us posted so that's pretty cool
[00:43:50] getting nice updates from
[00:43:52] various agencies in the white
[00:43:54] so thank you very much
[00:43:56] awesome
[00:43:58] yeah that's super handy
[00:44:00] to know
[00:44:02] fix those roads up
[00:44:04] yeah and by the way
[00:44:06] it's like the road opening should be happening
[00:44:08] anytime now
[00:44:10] so we'll have to keep an update
[00:44:12] on that
[00:44:14] and then we'll open it up soon
[00:44:16] I don't know but I would assume so
[00:44:18] yeah
[00:44:20] I did hear
[00:44:22] Sawyer River
[00:44:24] what is it Sawyer River Road
[00:44:26] Sawyer Pond Road
[00:44:28] I think that one's washed
[00:44:30] is that delayed I think
[00:44:32] did they wash out again?
[00:44:34] I think so I think that
[00:44:36] they said that one was going to be delayed
[00:44:38] yeah let's tackle that
[00:44:40] soon so we can get a good update on that
[00:44:42] we all know
[00:44:44] that hiking a mountain can be hard
[00:44:46] at times so here's a corny
[00:44:48] dad joke to help you
[00:44:50] get over it
[00:44:52] but um bum
[00:44:54] alright
[00:44:56] stop it's that time of the show
[00:44:58] where we do a dad joke
[00:45:00] it's alright let's hear it
[00:45:04] I actually have
[00:45:06] I have a bonus
[00:45:08] dad joke that
[00:45:10] sent me after this
[00:45:12] that I want to do but for this one
[00:45:14] alright so I grilled the chicken for two hours
[00:45:16] yesterday
[00:45:18] it still won't tell me why it crossed the road
[00:45:22] get it I grilled the chicken like
[00:45:24] asked it questions instead of like
[00:45:26] oh yeah interrogation
[00:45:28] did undone
[00:45:32] alright I got a bonus joke
[00:45:34] Camilla sent me and I kind of laughed
[00:45:36] when I said so according to
[00:45:38] a recent poll
[00:45:40] running into objects can be painful
[00:45:44] get it according to a recent
[00:45:46] poll like instead of like
[00:45:48] like a poll in the ground and you're running
[00:45:50] into it so
[00:45:54] oh man those are good
[00:45:56] and then Camilla also
[00:45:58] sent me a video of her husband Lance
[00:46:00] so Camilla and Lance do this
[00:46:02] thing where they like jump up in the air
[00:46:04] in slow motion and then it looks like
[00:46:06] alright and like
[00:46:08] so Lance
[00:46:10] they bought sweatshirts, slasher sweatshirts
[00:46:12] so she sent me this video I'm going to send it to you
[00:46:14] Tom of Lance like
[00:46:16] spinning around and jumping like
[00:46:18] yeah it's just
[00:46:20] it's indescribable but it's
[00:46:22] hilarious and he's got the slasher sweatshirt
[00:46:26] excellent
[00:46:36] hey what's that sound
[00:46:38] it must be time for the pop culture
[00:46:40] segment with Mike and Stomp
[00:46:46] alright Stomp this is the part of the show where we do
[00:46:48] pop culture talk
[00:46:50] yeah not much going on I did finally catch up with
[00:46:52] Dune part 2
[00:46:54] I had a mortgage
[00:46:56] my house here to rent it
[00:46:58] and watch it here at home but it was
[00:47:00] actually really impressive
[00:47:02] beautiful movie very long
[00:47:04] it was like 3 hours plus
[00:47:06] but boy did they
[00:47:08] knock it out of the park it was really good
[00:47:10] yeah I was hoping it was going to be on
[00:47:12] the airplane
[00:47:14] options
[00:47:16] when I flew over to Europe but it wasn't
[00:47:18] so
[00:47:20] it's great
[00:47:22] I really do wish I had seen it in the theaters
[00:47:24] the IMAX version because
[00:47:26] it's definitely a beautiful movie to watch
[00:47:28] acting is great
[00:47:30] did you rent it or buy it
[00:47:32] I bought it actually
[00:47:34] just so that we could watch it again because
[00:47:36] we've actually started it for a second time
[00:47:38] it was that good
[00:47:40] yeah I had to watch the first one like multiple
[00:47:42] times just to
[00:47:44] just to make sure I understood everything so
[00:47:46] maybe I'll do that tonight
[00:47:48] it's really really really good
[00:47:50] yeah can't go wrong with that
[00:47:52] alright and let's see
[00:47:54] we got some what? Sponsors right

[00:49:30] and that's
[00:49:32] what we got
[00:49:34] okay stop
[00:49:36] and I think this is the part of the show where we do another
[00:49:38] advertiser so we're going to talk about
[00:49:40] Valkluz
[00:49:42] yes Valkluz
[00:49:44] Valkluz
[00:49:46] let's get our pronunciations correct
[00:49:48] Valkluz
[00:49:52] yeah so does your backpack
[00:49:54] not provide enough ventilation
[00:49:56] does your back sweat too much
[00:49:58] when backpacking
[00:50:00] as you know sweat can be extremely
[00:50:02] uncomfortable on the trails

[00:51:24] so people can check it out
[00:51:26] and see how it fits
[00:51:28] on the packs
[00:51:30] and then I did use mine this weekend
[00:51:32] when I went hiking on Moosealac
[00:51:34] I didn't take it to Europe
[00:51:36] but I was soaked anyway
[00:51:38] because just the conditions
[00:51:40] but my back stayed dry
[00:51:42] everything else was wet
[00:51:44] everything's stomp
[00:51:46] I'll get into it in a minute
[00:51:48] first we're going to talk about
[00:51:50] what beer we're drinking
[00:51:52] I got nothing, I got some kombucha
[00:51:54] I am rolling in
[00:51:56] from Grotto
[00:51:58] we had some pizza and some boom sauce
[00:52:00] a little while ago so yeah I'm all good
[00:52:02] I'm drinking a ginger lemon kombucha
[00:52:04] oh very nice
[00:52:06] I am drinking a clouded judgement by Reckless
[00:52:08] so my last Reckless haul
[00:52:10] from when I finished the 4000 footer winter list
[00:52:12] awesome
[00:52:16] how is it good?
[00:52:18] what is it like an IPA?
[00:52:20] matter of fact when I drank a lot of beer
[00:52:22] in Europe and it was all Pilsner
[00:52:24] and German beer
[00:52:26] lighter
[00:52:28] you don't even get into
[00:52:30] let me look at the beer list
[00:52:32] you just tell them I'd like a beer
[00:52:34] and they just bring it
[00:52:36] is it warm? no, it wasn't warm
[00:52:38] yeah because when I went to Germany
[00:52:40] it was warm most of the time
[00:52:42] it was pretty cool
[00:52:44] they will not chill their beer
[00:52:46] my middle daughter is going to be going to college
[00:52:48] in London next semester
[00:52:50] and she's like I'm going to Oktoberfest
[00:52:52] sounds like a terrible idea
[00:52:54] but I'll have to warn her
[00:52:56] that maybe she'll get
[00:52:58] I don't know if she drinks beer
[00:53:00] she drinks these young college kids
[00:53:02] they bring these things called Borgs
[00:53:04] have you heard of a Borg?
[00:53:06] no
[00:53:08] it's short for black out
[00:53:10] something
[00:53:12] and they take these milk jugs
[00:53:14] and they just fill it up with
[00:53:16] juice
[00:53:18] and vodka and all kinds of nonsense
[00:53:20] so
[00:53:22] I don't know if she has to train
[00:53:24] and milk
[00:53:26] I'm like don't show up to Oktoberfest without
[00:53:28] being able to pound some beer
[00:53:30] wow a Borg
[00:53:34] I knew we should have gone left back there
[00:53:36] Stomp don't worry
[00:53:38] I know it's this way
[00:53:40] I've got a feeling in my gut
[00:53:42] are you sure you're not about to have a bowel emergency?
[00:53:44] totally
[00:53:46] we got this
[00:53:48] but I just blew out my hip
[00:53:50] fell down that gully with my 40 year old micro spikes
[00:53:52] suck it up Stomp
[00:53:54] it's 4pm we're at 3500 feet
[00:53:56] we got 9 miles back to the parking lot
[00:53:58] your leg may be broken
[00:54:00] we got no cell connection
[00:54:02] and we can't feel our fingers
[00:54:04] I'm going to blow up my list tonight
[00:54:06] by the way I need some water
[00:54:08] I'm empty
[00:54:10] I would if I could see what I'm doing
[00:54:12] but my headlamp battery is dead
[00:54:14] you gotta be kidding me
[00:54:16] what a chump
[00:54:18] this is the last time I hike with you
[00:54:20] whatever Mr
[00:54:22] do you know me? I have a podcast
[00:54:24] whatever
[00:54:26] let's find out what Mike and Stomp
[00:54:28] have been hiking
[00:54:30] anyway this is part of the show
[00:54:32] we're going to hike Stomp
[00:54:34] you said you were going to hike
[00:54:36] I was laughing
[00:54:38] for the listener Stomp is like the king of vague
[00:54:40] you never know
[00:54:42] what he's actually texting you
[00:54:44] there's a lot that's left out
[00:54:46] to interpretation when you communicate
[00:54:48] with Stomp over text
[00:54:50] so I invited him to come with us
[00:54:52] to hike
[00:54:54] and then Stomp was like
[00:54:56] I'm going to Webster
[00:54:58] with Mrs Stomp
[00:55:00] and I was like Stomp isn't going to be able to come
[00:55:02] he's hiking Webster
[00:55:04] and he's like oh he's going up the Webster cliff
[00:55:06] and I said honestly with Stomp
[00:55:08] it could be Webster Slide
[00:55:10] it could be Webster
[00:55:12] it could be some other Webster
[00:55:14] I'm like I don't know
[00:55:16] I bet you it's not the Webster we think it is
[00:55:18] and what did it end up being
[00:55:20] it ended up being well sticky
[00:55:22] exactly so you guys didn't even
[00:55:24] I knew you weren't going to leave your house
[00:55:26] but you'd be proud of me
[00:55:28] I did my research and I said hey wait a minute
[00:55:30] Mrs Stomp
[00:55:32] I think the Squams are closed for mud season
[00:55:34] and we did our research
[00:55:36] and sure enough Webster
[00:55:38] which is off of the perch pond side
[00:55:40] which is more western to the Squams
[00:55:42] you know
[00:55:44] you think that wouldn't be part of it
[00:55:46] but yeah it was closed so we decided to just stay local
[00:55:48] but the Webster you're talking about
[00:55:50] is that Webster Slide
[00:55:52] no Mount Webster
[00:55:54] which is the southern tip of
[00:55:56] Squam Traverse so it's south of Morgan and Percival
[00:55:58] north of
[00:56:00] Cotton Mountain
[00:56:02] so it's like sandwich right south of
[00:56:04] Morgan Percival Loop
[00:56:06] but when you text me and you say
[00:56:08] let me ask you this so I'm curious
[00:56:10] so you text me and you're like I'm going to tell Mike
[00:56:12] that I'm going to Webster
[00:56:14] are you thinking like oh
[00:56:16] Mike is going to know that I'm talking about the Webster
[00:56:18] in Squam or
[00:56:20] are you thinking like oh well
[00:56:22] he'll probably think I'm going to the Webster
[00:56:24] by Crawford Notch
[00:56:26] but you don't need it doesn't even
[00:56:28] enter your mind
[00:56:30] that's funny because I wasn't even thinking of Crawford
[00:56:32] because I was thinking the one of
[00:56:34] Route 25 which is near
[00:56:36] what the hell
[00:56:38] is it it's near Moosalach
[00:56:40] it's on Route 25 Ward Webster Slide
[00:56:42] yeah I know that one
[00:56:44] but why wouldn't
[00:56:46] you just clarify that
[00:56:48] I just oh my goodness
[00:56:50] I'm just lazy when it comes to
[00:56:52] texting I guess
[00:56:54] because I was like I laughed
[00:56:56] it's one of
[00:56:58] it's very likely not
[00:57:00] the Webster that most of like 99%
[00:57:02] of the hikers in the world would think
[00:57:04] so
[00:57:06] I like to keep people guessing
[00:57:08] oh my god stop in your texting
[00:57:10] it's like just a vague
[00:57:12] anyway so you went up to WellSticky
[00:57:14] did you do the full loop or did you just
[00:57:16] go up and down
[00:57:18] no we just we had time to zip
[00:57:20] up to the Dickey ledges
[00:57:24] just a short sweet thing just to get out
[00:57:26] and we ended up seeing
[00:57:28] either a Black Hawk
[00:57:30] or one of the
[00:57:32] Coast Guard choppers I could not
[00:57:34] tell the difference it looked like a Black Hawk
[00:57:36] but it had colorings like
[00:57:38] a Coast Guard ship
[00:57:40] so I don't know if anybody has any insight
[00:57:42] as to what's going on there
[00:57:44] let me know but that was really cool so they
[00:57:46] were doing the reconnaissance loops
[00:57:48] and maneuvers where they land on the northern ledges
[00:57:50] of Dickey and they did it about
[00:57:52] a dozen times they would land
[00:57:54] they would launch again
[00:57:56] and come through the call
[00:57:58] and it was really cool to see that
[00:58:00] so yeah long story short
[00:58:02] so we did that together and then this afternoon
[00:58:04] we did another hike for content
[00:58:06] hike and
[00:58:08] Lad Mountain
[00:58:10] you like the hike for content
[00:58:12] club
[00:58:14] where's that
[00:58:16] I've done Lad before
[00:58:18] this is Mrs. Domps
[00:58:20] Discovery
[00:58:22] it's from that beautiful site
[00:58:24] the New Hampshire family hikes website
[00:58:26] we talked about before
[00:58:28] so this is
[00:58:30] in Meredith, New Hampshire
[00:58:32] off of Route 104
[00:58:34] and you have to follow
[00:58:36] this road called Chamon Road
[00:58:38] which takes you up to this beautiful
[00:58:40] it's real simple it's like
[00:58:42] it's a mile up, mile down
[00:58:44] and it has a view of
[00:58:46] it's a southerly view of
[00:58:48] like Winni Squam
[00:58:50] and
[00:58:52] Gunstock
[00:58:54] and there's a picnic table there
[00:58:56] there's a huge sprawling area where you could set tents up
[00:58:58] and a fire ring
[00:59:00] it's super cool so it was one of those last minute things we did
[00:59:02] just before the podcast today
[00:59:04] and yeah it was great
[00:59:06] yeah it looks pretty I'm looking at the pictures here
[00:59:08] it looks really nice, no snow
[00:59:10] I got
[00:59:12] zero snow
[00:59:14] nothing, no ice, nothing
[00:59:16] it was just a little dm on some of the scrambles
[00:59:18] but there's nothing here
[00:59:20] and to be honest with you
[00:59:22] there was absolutely zero going up to the ledges of Dickey
[00:59:24] nothing
[00:59:26] it's gone
[00:59:28] what's the elevation of the ledges of Dickey
[00:59:30] like 3000
[00:59:32] I would think that's like 23 to 25
[00:59:34] so Dickey itself is
[00:59:36] what 33
[00:59:38] 33
[00:59:40] yeah
[00:59:42] well it's just like 100 less
[00:59:44] so yeah it's all clear
[00:59:46] it's up there though
[00:59:48] for sure in the call in certain areas
[00:59:50] yeah yeah yeah so I went
[00:59:52] I met with
[00:59:54] Jake and Peter on Sunday and we hiked
[00:59:56] Musalak
[00:59:58] so Peter is doing redlining so he needed to get bent
[01:00:00] and trail so
[01:00:02] they spotted their car
[01:00:04] they spotted a car at
[01:00:06] the
[01:00:08] Tunnelbrook I think it's Tunnelbrook
[01:00:10] there's like a road there
[01:00:12] and then they
[01:00:14] drove one car back over to Beaverbrook
[01:00:16] and then I met them and then we went up Beaverbrook
[01:00:18] and then
[01:00:22] probably like I think we started off in spikes
[01:00:24] so that side of the mountain
[01:00:26] had snow pretty much from the beginning
[01:00:30] and we were micro spikes
[01:00:32] up until
[01:00:34] I'd say maybe about 2,500
[01:00:36] 3,000 feet
[01:00:38] and then we switched over to snow shoes
[01:00:40] and
[01:00:42] we weren't really sinking in or anything
[01:00:44] but then when we got up to the shelter
[01:00:46] and then we cleared like 4,000 feet
[01:00:48] there was like so much snow
[01:00:50] I was shocked the snow was
[01:00:52] up to
[01:00:54] it was up to the blazes
[01:00:56] and then the
[01:00:58] signs were like almost covered up
[01:01:00] wild
[01:01:02] so it was very weird like once you got over
[01:01:04] 4,000 feet
[01:01:06] it was um and the problem that
[01:01:08] we ran into is that it was a warm day
[01:01:10] but because we were up so high
[01:01:12] we were like
[01:01:14] knocking into the branches
[01:01:16] and the branches
[01:01:18] were all wet so we were getting wet
[01:01:20] like badly
[01:01:22] um and then
[01:01:24] I screwed up like you get the
[01:01:26] shame drop here Stomp because I
[01:01:28] went off trail
[01:01:30] oh jeez
[01:01:32] yeah it happens easy
[01:01:34] our original plan we were gonna bush whack up to
[01:01:36] Mount Blue to grab that
[01:01:38] okay
[01:01:40] but that section of Beaverbrook
[01:01:42] as you approach
[01:01:44] as you circle around Mount Blue
[01:01:46] it's like a
[01:01:48] it's like a side hill for like a long
[01:01:50] distance and
[01:01:52] it was like so much snow
[01:01:54] built up that we were knocking
[01:01:56] all the water off of the branches
[01:01:58] and then we were side healing it
[01:02:00] and it was just miserable
[01:02:02] oh yeah it's wild
[01:02:04] unfortunately like I missed the right
[01:02:06] hand turn to go up
[01:02:08] Beaverbrook and I kept
[01:02:10] going on that abandoned trail
[01:02:12] there's an abandoned trail that looks like a trail
[01:02:14] and I just kept side healing
[01:02:16] and poor Jake and Peter followed
[01:02:18] me Peter 6-5
[01:02:20] so like it was easy for me and
[01:02:22] Jake to kind of duck under everything like poor
[01:02:24] Peter's like he can't duck under
[01:02:26] anything he's just going right through these branches
[01:02:28] it was miserable
[01:02:30] and then we finally realized we were
[01:02:32] off trail and we were like alright well let's
[01:02:34] just whack up
[01:02:36] to Beaverbrook
[01:02:38] it sucked because it was like a half a
[01:02:40] mile and it was like
[01:02:42] probably
[01:02:44] I don't know
[01:02:46] like 400-500 feet of elevation
[01:02:48] game but the problem was is that we
[01:02:50] bush whacking
[01:02:52] like melting wet
[01:02:54] gross
[01:02:56] conditions but the problem was is that
[01:02:58] it was the reason we kept going is that
[01:03:00] every time
[01:03:02] we would break through
[01:03:04] a tough section there'd be like open
[01:03:06] forest so I was kind of like alright well
[01:03:08] it's open forest I can see
[01:03:10] a you
[01:03:12] you must know this bush whacking
[01:03:14] because I don't have a lot of experience
[01:03:16] and I'm like alright it's open I can see
[01:03:18] like it's open pretty much
[01:03:20] and we maneuvered through so there was a bunch of section
[01:03:22] where it was like
[01:03:24] open forest that you could work your way through
[01:03:26] but unfortunately
[01:03:28] the open forest kept pushing us
[01:03:30] at the same elevation
[01:03:32] that we were at and we needed
[01:03:34] to go to the right and it kept pushing us
[01:03:36] to the left
[01:03:38] so you weren't working with
[01:03:40] GPS right?
[01:03:42] eventually I did start breaking out
[01:03:44] the GPS and I could see like okay
[01:03:46] we need to keep going to
[01:03:48] the right and I would go as
[01:03:50] hard right as I could
[01:03:52] but vegetation
[01:03:54] was getting away and everything else?
[01:03:56] vegetation was pushing us away and like we're getting soaked
[01:03:58] I mean we were soaked
[01:04:00] I mean I had my shell on
[01:04:02] but I didn't have I had my soft shell pants on
[01:04:04] they were soaked
[01:04:06] it's like 35-40 degrees so it was okay
[01:04:08] like I wasn't too worried about it but
[01:04:10] eventually we did
[01:04:12] find like enough open forest
[01:04:14] but there was a few sections where we had to really
[01:04:16] bust through
[01:04:18] and then we had to just scrub
[01:04:20] scary
[01:04:22] but I just felt bad for Peter
[01:04:24] because he's like there was so many things
[01:04:26] that me and Jake could duck under
[01:04:28] that he couldn't do that
[01:04:30] yeah it's reminiscent
[01:04:32] of that recent car trip I did
[01:04:34] so the snow is
[01:04:36] so the beaver brook is more on the northern side
[01:04:38] so there'll be more of that snow up on that side
[01:04:40] same thing with the northern side of the car
[01:04:42] I lost trail
[01:04:44] and it got to the point where like
[01:04:46] the northern sides are always
[01:04:48] just wild
[01:04:50] yeah it was a good experience
[01:04:52] I mean it wasn't too bad but eventually
[01:04:54] we broke out into the
[01:04:56] weather station so
[01:04:58] people probably aren't aware of this but there's a weather station
[01:05:00] like right off of beaver brook trail
[01:05:02] so it's a huge clearing
[01:05:04] and
[01:05:06] then you go over the other side there's another big
[01:05:08] clearing there
[01:05:10] which is pretty good I was like oh the stealth
[01:05:12] camping here this isn't bad
[01:05:14] to know about
[01:05:16] and the other thing is it's wide open so you get these really good views
[01:05:18] the whole way
[01:05:20] which was cool because we kept looking back and we were like oh we got views
[01:05:22] the whole time
[01:05:24] then we got up top
[01:05:26] the wind was whipping but like not so
[01:05:28] bad but it dried my pants right off
[01:05:30] so it was okay and then
[01:05:32] we headed down we came back down
[01:05:34] we went down the Benton trail
[01:05:36] and again same issue above
[01:05:38] 4000 feet
[01:05:40] the snow was so heavy that we were like ducking under
[01:05:42] all the branches because we were like
[01:05:44] up way high and nobody goes
[01:05:46] on that trail like I bet you probably people
[01:05:48] hadn't gone on that trail in weeks
[01:05:50] um
[01:05:52] and then by time we got that's a
[01:05:54] that's more of a
[01:05:56] I don't know what direction it's facing more
[01:05:58] maybe to the south of the
[01:06:00] the east but uh we get
[01:06:02] to 3000 feet and there's no snow whatsoever
[01:06:06] so it's just
[01:06:08] weird so we were able to just get down
[01:06:10] yeah and then the final we had to cross
[01:06:12] tunnel brook
[01:06:14] and that was dicey
[01:06:16] so that was running hot and then we had to
[01:06:18] go up up river a little bit
[01:06:20] and then cross
[01:06:22] you know we the boots we were
[01:06:24] up to our gators
[01:06:26] crossing the river
[01:06:28] yeah
[01:06:30] it was a good day it was fun
[01:06:32] you know we had a good time we were laughing nobody
[01:06:34] was unhappy about it it was just
[01:06:36] we just weren't thinking so it happens
[01:06:38] so you know it can happen to anybody
[01:06:40] oh sure so how are the
[01:06:42] the cascade sections of beaver brook I've
[01:06:44] yet to do that trail
[01:06:46] been on it for like a rescue
[01:06:48] it's fine it was it was it's
[01:06:50] yeah it's steep and
[01:06:52] there's a couple of sections that are
[01:06:54] that are no slip zones where you go into
[01:06:56] that drainage if you
[01:06:58] paying attention but it's generally it was okay
[01:07:00] um none none of
[01:07:02] the rebar none of the wooden blocks are
[01:07:04] showing yet it's all covered up by snow
[01:07:06] wow
[01:07:08] yeah it's definitely a steep trail
[01:07:10] and the thing too about that
[01:07:12] trail is the distance between the beaver brook
[01:07:14] shelter and the moose lock summit
[01:07:16] is like really long
[01:07:18] for some reason I had in my head it's like right
[01:07:20] there but it's it's a long hike
[01:07:22] to go around Mount Blue
[01:07:24] and then and then the rest of that so
[01:07:26] hmm
[01:07:28] and this was what day this was on
[01:07:30] Sunday
[01:07:32] okay I'm trying to think of one we had
[01:07:34] that massive rainstorm that was before
[01:07:36] that yeah I wasn't in town
[01:07:38] day two yeah yeah we had
[01:07:40] a ton of rain up here that wiped out everything
[01:07:42] well
[01:07:44] yeah it was definitely the drainage was running hot
[01:07:46] for sure yeah
[01:07:48] but yeah it was an adventure
[01:07:50] yeah good for you that's great
[01:07:52] this is a beautiful mountain
[01:07:54] yeah yeah it's it's good I think
[01:07:56] that's probably my 10th time or so on

[01:12:40] let's see jakester
[01:12:42] our jakester
[01:12:44] did some deep post-holing
[01:12:46] on moose lock
[01:12:48] was this a separate trip? oh he was
[01:12:50] oh he was very coy about
[01:12:52] tagging you and posting pictures
[01:12:54] about you
[01:12:56] I don't know if we were post-holing that badly
[01:12:58] huh
[01:13:00] he's supposed to downflake
[01:13:02] that we went off trail and got lost
[01:13:04] he calls it deep
[01:13:06] post-holing
[01:13:08] we did some
[01:13:10] deep but we had snow shoes
[01:13:12] we went okay
[01:13:14] haha
[01:13:16] now we have
[01:13:18] nick hikes that plays guitar
[01:13:20] hight tecumseh and snows mountain
[01:13:22] and
[01:13:24] then mike ladavaya
[01:13:26] did mount watatac
[01:13:28] made a parenthesis saying it's a glacial
[01:13:30] anomaly which I thought was pretty cool
[01:13:34] that would be an awesome name for a rock band by the way
[01:13:38] what watatac or glacial anomaly
[01:13:42] haha
[01:13:44] yeah it would be good
[01:13:46] haha
[01:13:48] now watatac where the heck is that
[01:13:50] south of minadnok
[01:13:52] I think so it's in that area
[01:13:54] okay all right
[01:13:56] so we have two more here
[01:13:58] duchess 3663 did mount watusit
[01:14:00] first hike in nine months
[01:14:02] due to achilles tendonitis
[01:14:04] so nice work duchess
[01:14:06] keep it up go easy
[01:14:08] don't push it too hard and stretch those calves
[01:14:10] that's all you gotta do
[01:14:12] and ice it if it's sore
[01:14:14] and then finally
[01:14:16] xbox aka
[01:14:18] boreal badass
[01:14:20] aka real badass
[01:14:22] beat me to the punch
[01:14:24] you've been talking about this
[01:14:26] so he answered your question
[01:14:28] he stole my thunder yeah he did
[01:14:30] which is all good I'm super impressed
[01:14:32] cause this is a hard time of the year for this trail
[01:14:34] so he did mount cardigan via the
[01:14:36] infamous halt trail
[01:14:38] okay all right so
[01:14:40] no she used the halt
[01:14:42] oh yeah it should only be easier now
[01:14:44] with less snow
[01:14:46] haha
[01:14:48] but the pictures are gnarly
[01:14:50] what do you think what you got cooking
[01:14:52] let me see oh first of all I think that
[01:14:54] it's watatac
[01:14:56] watatac
[01:14:58] watatac
[01:15:00] watatac I think anyway
[01:15:02] let me see here so Liz is
[01:15:04] she's gotten some love before
[01:15:06] she's got a keen ginger beard
[01:15:08] macateed knob
[01:15:10] that's good
[01:15:12] so empathica let us know
[01:15:14] when chase gets to 48 and we'll give you
[01:15:16] we'll give it to you
[01:15:18] um
[01:15:20] I think the cardigan via halt so boreal
[01:15:22] badass gets it
[01:15:24] are you sure what about the bell nap
[01:15:26] oh the bell nap
[01:15:28] yeah it was a
[01:15:30] that's a bruiser
[01:15:32] it's her birthday too
[01:15:34] alright happy birthday lao samson
[01:15:36] you get it you get it
[01:15:38] yeah there you go
[01:15:40] Xbox
[01:15:42] she screwed xbox over
[01:15:44] hahahaha
[01:15:46] sorry xbox
[01:15:48] alright
[01:15:50] if you had slid down
[01:15:52] the whole trail and survived then maybe
[01:15:54] but yeah I don't know
[01:15:56] so congratulations lao
[01:15:58] samson
[01:16:00] so moving on to the segment of the week
[01:16:02] a little bit about hiking in Europe
[01:16:04] and uh trip to Europe so are you ready
[01:16:06] awesome let's do it
[01:16:08] slasher's hiking
[01:16:10] topic of the week
[01:16:12] slasher's hiking
[01:16:14] topic of the week
[01:16:16] slasher's hiking
[01:16:18] topic of the week
[01:16:20] slasher's hiking
[01:16:22] topic of the week
[01:16:24] so you've done some backpacking
[01:16:26] in Europe before
[01:16:28] just lower hills nothing major
[01:16:30] um you know certain parts of
[01:16:32] Italy but nothing
[01:16:34] too too high up in the elevation
[01:16:36] I had different goals in mind at the time
[01:16:38] yeah yeah
[01:16:40] drinking and more drinking
[01:16:42] alright so um
[01:16:44] so this is like a
[01:16:46] so I hiked in Slovakia so I think this is
[01:16:48] definitely an interesting trip for people
[01:16:50] if you're looking to get to
[01:16:52] a part of the world that probably
[01:16:54] isn't as traveled by
[01:16:56] Americans as
[01:16:58] other areas of Europe would be
[01:17:00] so I started off I had a work trip
[01:17:02] so I was in Poland
[01:17:04] I stayed in Krakow
[01:17:06] and so I flew in from Boston
[01:17:08] to Munich and then Munich to Krakow
[01:17:10] and then I stayed at a
[01:17:12] hotel near the main square
[01:17:14] in Krakow so
[01:17:16] Krakow is like
[01:17:18] it's an ancient city I mean it's like
[01:17:20] I mean I think in the 1200s
[01:17:22] it got like it basically got
[01:17:24] like sacked by the Mongols
[01:17:26] like that type of
[01:17:28] old city stomp
[01:17:30] mm-hmm yeah ancient
[01:17:32] ancient history ancient ancient so this main
[01:17:34] square that I was at is essentially like
[01:17:36] it's their version of Fianyl Hall
[01:17:38] but it's like a it's a
[01:17:40] medieval town square
[01:17:42] it's like basically a perfect square
[01:17:44] and then there's like three
[01:17:46] perpendicular roads in each
[01:17:48] side of the square and all those roads
[01:17:50] are these like narrow roads
[01:17:52] where like people live in town houses
[01:17:54] and apartments but there's also like a bunch of shops
[01:17:56] and artists locations
[01:17:58] and stuff so it's an amazing place
[01:18:00] tons of outdoor
[01:18:02] restaurants there's large churches
[01:18:04] towers all these side streets
[01:18:06] have shops and retail
[01:18:08] so you know after work
[01:18:10] I would just sort of walk around down there
[01:18:12] we'd get something to eat there all kinds of international
[01:18:14] food there so you get anything you want
[01:18:16] a lot of burgers
[01:18:18] in Krakow I noticed
[01:18:20] okay
[01:18:22] burger meisters
[01:18:24] burger meister meister burger
[01:18:26] and then I did get a chance I went into
[01:18:28] the kezmir
[01:18:30] I think they call it so this is the Krakow
[01:18:32] Jewish quarter
[01:18:34] which is a really interesting place so we're
[01:18:36] like the main square
[01:18:38] in Krakow
[01:18:40] is like very like wide
[01:18:42] and open
[01:18:44] and then the Jewish quarter
[01:18:46] is very sort of
[01:18:48] narrow streets and
[01:18:50] artists and artisans and things like that
[01:18:52] and the streets aren't
[01:18:54] they're winding so
[01:18:56] it's just a different vibe in the
[01:18:58] Jewish quarter
[01:19:00] so we went and ate there
[01:19:02] before World War II there was like 60,000
[01:19:04] Jews that were living in
[01:19:06] this Jewish area of Krakow
[01:19:08] unfortunately during World War II
[01:19:10] most of them were killed
[01:19:12] there was a number of survivors
[01:19:14] maybe a couple thousand survivors
[01:19:16] and the people that survived
[01:19:18] in Krakow
[01:19:20] were
[01:19:22] primarily the only remaining people
[01:19:24] after the war were the ones that were saved by
[01:19:26] Oscar Schindler of Schindler's List
[01:19:28] so I was in that
[01:19:30] area of where Schindler's List
[01:19:32] happened which I thought was like amazing
[01:19:34] and you know crazy to think about the history there
[01:19:36] oh yeah
[01:19:38] incredible
[01:19:40] so they have a lot of modern things
[01:19:42] there in Krakow too like they had this gallery
[01:19:44] a mall which is like
[01:19:46] this huge mall it's like take the Burlington mall
[01:19:48] and times it by three
[01:19:50] and it's like this huge store
[01:19:52] and it's got like electronic stores
[01:19:54] grocery stores all kinds of stuff in there
[01:19:56] so definitely like Krakow
[01:19:58] you could spend a couple days just exploring
[01:20:00] the city and it's just
[01:20:02] a beautiful area and the weather was perfect
[01:20:04] it was like 80 degrees the days I was there
[01:20:06] yeah
[01:20:08] we all thought you were in a Krakow's
[01:20:10] no no Krakow
[01:20:12] Krakow
[01:20:14] right
[01:20:16] not a Krakow's Krakow
[01:20:18] but then
[01:20:20] you know I worked every day so it wasn't like I was
[01:20:22] partying too much
[01:20:24] or anything but we did you know we went out to dinner
[01:20:26] at night and stuff but
[01:20:28] I took an egg so we were done on
[01:20:30] Wednesday I booked
[01:20:32] a separate trip to
[01:20:34] Slovakia so I got a driver
[01:20:36] from my hotel that drove
[01:20:38] me down about two hours to
[01:20:40] the Tatra Mountains so the
[01:20:42] Tatra Mountains are
[01:20:44] a series of mountains
[01:20:46] within the western
[01:20:48] Carpathians
[01:20:50] that form a natural border
[01:20:52] between Slovakia and Poland
[01:20:54] and they're the highest mountains
[01:20:56] in the Carpathians
[01:20:58] and they're distinct so there's the high
[01:21:00] Tatras that I was in and then
[01:21:02] there's also the low Tatras
[01:21:04] which are a separate Slovak mountain
[01:21:06] range further to the south
[01:21:08] so these mountains will look similar
[01:21:10] to the Alps but they have a lower
[01:21:12] elevation
[01:21:14] typically the summits the peaks
[01:21:16] are like 6,000 to about 8500 feet
[01:21:18] and
[01:21:20] they're newer mountain ranges so they'd have
[01:21:22] that jagged look to them stomp
[01:21:24] you know the newer ones tend to be more jagged
[01:21:26] like out on the west coast
[01:21:28] yeah
[01:21:30] so
[01:21:32] I had to pick a guide so that was the tricky
[01:21:34] part is deciding
[01:21:36] what guide to go with
[01:21:38] and then whether or not I wanted to go
[01:21:40] into Poland or Slovakia
[01:21:42] so I ended up just getting this guide
[01:21:44] that I found online that was
[01:21:46] well rated
[01:21:48] and then I coordinated through this
[01:21:50] Explorciar interface where
[01:21:52] he had proposed a hike up to this
[01:21:54] hot called the Terry Hut
[01:21:56] and he seemed like a nice guy
[01:21:58] I spoke English and you know I booked him
[01:22:00] for
[01:22:02] the trip and then we just
[01:22:04] exchanged information so I just sort of
[01:22:06] filled him back and forth he was like you have to arrange
[01:22:08] your own ride so I got a ride
[01:22:10] from the hotel
[01:22:12] they had a driver there so I was able to just pay
[01:22:14] him to take me down there
[01:22:16] and I met
[01:22:18] my guide Peter
[01:22:20] in this small Slovakian town
[01:22:22] called Stari Smokovic
[01:22:24] which is
[01:22:26] it's like right out of a Disney film
[01:22:28] it's
[01:22:30] you know small little like
[01:22:32] there's a, so first there was a big grand
[01:22:34] hotel there then there was these like
[01:22:36] small little coffee shops there was
[01:22:38] these like a little windmill type buildings
[01:22:40] and little churches
[01:22:42] and stuff like it literally looked like a Disney
[01:22:44] film set
[01:22:46] which was cool
[01:22:48] so it's a resort town
[01:22:50] so there's skiing there so there is like
[01:22:52] ski lifts and things like that that you can do in the
[01:22:54] winter but it was like a two it was
[01:22:56] a Thursday and it was super quiet
[01:22:58] so met my guide
[01:23:00] I got out of my car
[01:23:02] hopped in his car we drove up
[01:23:04] to this other
[01:23:06] road to the beginning
[01:23:08] of the hike so essentially what we were going
[01:23:10] was into what's called the
[01:23:12] small cold valley
[01:23:14] which I think the hike
[01:23:16] started at like about
[01:23:18] 3500 feet and went up to like
[01:23:20] 6500 feet of elevation
[01:23:22] so it was about 3000 feet again
[01:23:24] and
[01:23:26] the day
[01:23:28] we went it was like maybe 60 degrees out
[01:23:30] so
[01:23:32] started the hike off
[01:23:34] basically a long sleeve shirt
[01:23:36] and I had to take it off just go with a t-shirt
[01:23:38] and
[01:23:40] we started
[01:23:42] there's nothing like it that I can't
[01:23:44] I can't compare it to anything in the
[01:23:46] whites because there's nothing like it
[01:23:48] but the
[01:23:50] essentially like you start off in this open forest
[01:23:54] and you go down a little bit
[01:23:56] you actually descend a little bit into
[01:23:58] the forest
[01:24:00] and they've got like this
[01:24:02] beetle problem with the trees so there's a bunch
[01:24:04] of trees that are like knocked over like they had
[01:24:06] a like a tornado and a blowdown
[01:24:08] storm that knocked a ton of these
[01:24:10] trees down in the lower valley
[01:24:12] where the drainage comes in
[01:24:14] so you can see pretty
[01:24:16] pretty far out and then you go
[01:24:18] over this bridge and then you see this
[01:24:20] waterfall and then you start
[01:24:22] climbing and then you basically
[01:24:24] in the trees at that point
[01:24:26] you're in the trees for
[01:24:28] maybe like a mile or so
[01:24:30] and then you get to this hut so you hike
[01:24:32] maybe about two miles in and you get to a
[01:24:34] hut which has like it's a
[01:24:36] big hut and it has like
[01:24:38] playground equipment for kids
[01:24:40] it's got a bathroom
[01:24:42] and you can go inside and get food
[01:24:44] you can get beer you can get like all
[01:24:46] kinds of hard alcohol whatever you want so
[01:24:48] you could just do a day walk
[01:24:50] to that hut
[01:24:52] and hang out at picnic tables or whatever
[01:24:54] so I think a lot of the locals would just go
[01:24:56] to that point and just
[01:24:58] chill out and have a day I mean you could literally
[01:25:00] sounds great yeah I mean
[01:25:02] you can it's like going to a restaurant
[01:25:04] you could eat there
[01:25:06] and just go back
[01:25:08] home so it was just it was beautiful
[01:25:12] so we stopped there I actually had
[01:25:14] like long
[01:25:16] pants under my pants because
[01:25:18] I was like afraid it was gonna be cold but I was
[01:25:20] sweating so I took those off
[01:25:22] and I was just in t-shirts in my hiking pants
[01:25:26] and I wore hiking boots as well because there was
[01:25:28] still a lot of snow on the ground
[01:25:30] but the guy Peter he
[01:25:32] was telling me a little bit about himself so he's
[01:25:34] a professional search and rescue
[01:25:36] team member
[01:25:38] so full time search and rescue
[01:25:40] in Slovakia he's on like
[01:25:42] work shifts waiting to rescue
[01:25:44] and then he's a mountain guide
[01:25:46] and then
[01:25:48] he also was involved in
[01:25:50] mountain
[01:25:52] mountaineering skiing so that's basically
[01:25:54] like uphill races and then skiing
[01:25:56] back down
[01:25:58] so he was a professional skier I guess
[01:26:00] in his younger days he's like mid 40s
[01:26:04] so he was an interesting guy so I was
[01:26:06] telling him a little bit about the podcast
[01:26:08] telling him a little bit about
[01:26:10] you know he was asking about search and rescue
[01:26:12] I was like I'm not on search and rescue but I know a little bit about it
[01:26:14] so we were just comparing notes
[01:26:16] and I was asking about
[01:26:18] I'm like oh does anybody ever wear snow shoes
[01:26:20] and he's like no we only
[01:26:22] use skis to break trail
[01:26:26] which I thought was interesting
[01:26:28] yeah wow
[01:26:30] he's like yeah we almost never use snow shoes so
[01:26:32] I thought that was pretty cool
[01:26:34] so then when we
[01:26:36] left the first hut
[01:26:38] and then you know it's pretty gradual climb
[01:26:40] up and then when you enter
[01:26:42] the valley like it just all of a sudden
[01:26:44] it just opens up and it's just
[01:26:46] a wide expanse of like a perfect bowl
[01:26:48] of just mountains and summits
[01:26:50] around and then you're just basically
[01:26:52] climbing up into that valley
[01:26:54] until you get to you could see
[01:26:56] the hut on the very top of the valley
[01:26:58] floor
[01:27:00] so you could see where you're going the whole way
[01:27:02] and there was like this giant waterfall right below
[01:27:04] the hut that was
[01:27:06] you could hear from a distance
[01:27:08] but it was like just me and Peter
[01:27:10] and you know there's a couple other people that came by
[01:27:12] but for the most part like we there was very few people
[01:27:14] hiking and
[01:27:16] eventually
[01:27:18] we got up to like an open
[01:27:20] snow field so essentially
[01:27:22] it was like
[01:27:24] it would have been like crossing the Jefferson snow
[01:27:26] fields or the Star Lake
[01:27:28] snow fields but like
[01:27:30] times it by like a half a mile
[01:27:32] so you're going like a half mile three quarters of a mile
[01:27:34] across open
[01:27:36] open area but if you
[01:27:38] slipped like it wouldn't be
[01:27:40] good but like you'd be able to rest yourself
[01:27:42] pretty well with just your hands if you needed to
[01:27:44] yeah
[01:27:46] so what time of the year is this I mean basically
[01:27:48] early spring
[01:27:50] yeah it's early spring for them
[01:27:52] it's the same sort of conditions as
[01:27:54] us so a lot of snow on the ground
[01:27:56] but it was melting
[01:27:58] yeah so
[01:28:00] but yeah
[01:28:02] and then so you enter the snow fields and then
[01:28:04] once you get past the snow fields
[01:28:06] the final climb is like 800 feet
[01:28:08] straight up over about
[01:28:10] half a mile so then you're going like basically
[01:28:12] straight up and by that time
[01:28:14] I had switched over to micro spikes
[01:28:16] and yeah we just
[01:28:18] climbed our way up and
[01:28:20] so a couple of other people heading up we saw some
[01:28:22] ski years coming down
[01:28:24] as well and then we got up to
[01:28:26] Terry Hut
[01:28:28] and normally you can stop there
[01:28:30] and then head up through the passes to get
[01:28:32] to other valleys but because
[01:28:34] the snow was so
[01:28:36] it was still a lot of snow it's not safe
[01:28:38] to go through the passes yet but Peter was telling me
[01:28:40] he's like yeah in the summer
[01:28:42] you can basically like stay at this hot
[01:28:44] and then wake up the next morning
[01:28:46] and go over the passes you climb up another
[01:28:48] like 1500 feet
[01:28:50] and go down to another valley
[01:28:52] and stay at a hut there and you can jump
[01:28:54] from like valley to valley
[01:28:56] mm-hmm
[01:28:58] we'll lift them ball game out there
[01:29:00] yeah exactly but then you know we get to the hut
[01:29:02] and the workers are there
[01:29:04] that's the other thing is as you're
[01:29:06] climbing up you'll see these
[01:29:08] workers that the same with the AMC
[01:29:10] they had the backboards but these
[01:29:12] backboards are like way more
[01:29:14] stuff than you see with the AMC kids carrying
[01:29:16] mm-hmm
[01:29:18] so it was crazy I don't know if you saw
[01:29:20] I posted a picture heavy heavy weight
[01:29:22] yeah he said like a 60
[01:29:24] kilograms that's like 130 pounds
[01:29:26] in all those
[01:29:28] boxes yeah yeah
[01:29:30] he said around 130 pounds
[01:29:32] that's still look that's a lot
[01:29:34] a ton I mean that's double
[01:29:36] of say a 70 pound search
[01:29:38] and rescue pack mm-hmm
[01:29:40] and I guess they have an annual race
[01:29:42] every year with the couriers or the porters
[01:29:44] that they'll like race up to this
[01:29:46] hut that we went to
[01:29:48] and see who can who can get there
[01:29:50] the fastest
[01:29:52] incredible yeah
[01:29:54] which is crazy but then I got to the hut
[01:29:56] we had this cabbage soup
[01:29:58] and
[01:30:00] we had a beer
[01:30:02] you know again they don't ask you what you want for beer
[01:30:04] they just give you a beer which is good
[01:30:06] mm-hmm
[01:30:08] and then we know about
[01:30:10] IPA yet yeah I didn't
[01:30:12] even ask like you know he's just like oh give me
[01:30:14] a beer it's fine and
[01:30:16] yes so we hung out there we had soup
[01:30:18] he got a call from
[01:30:20] like another group that he was organizing
[01:30:22] he's like usually he's organizing
[01:30:24] like trips with like 10 people or whatever
[01:30:26] so I think he was pretty happy to just have me
[01:30:28] and I he did like stroke my ego
[01:30:30] a little bit he was like oh
[01:30:32] you know you seem to like be able to
[01:30:34] walk like on these trails pretty well
[01:30:36] he's like a lot of times I get people that
[01:30:38] don't really have good footing
[01:30:40] and it's tough for them and I was like yeah
[01:30:42] like we we have pretty pretty difficult
[01:30:44] trails where I live
[01:30:46] highest wins in the world
[01:30:48] yeah I was like oh the white mountains
[01:30:50] you know out in Washington he's like yeah okay
[01:30:52] never heard of it so
[01:30:54] um but
[01:30:56] he was so nice such a great guy and
[01:30:58] you know the thing about him is like he took
[01:31:00] a ton of pictures which I appreciated
[01:31:02] um yeah and we talked a lot
[01:31:04] about search and rescue we talked a lot about
[01:31:06] like so he's an international guy so if
[01:31:08] you wanted to hire him to go to the Pyrenees
[01:31:10] or the Dolomites or whatever he'll meet
[01:31:12] you there and guide so he's
[01:31:14] like a real professional guy
[01:31:16] um yeah and then
[01:31:18] then we was headed back down
[01:31:20] you know it was about a 12 mile round trip
[01:31:22] hike and
[01:31:24] you know it was five hours six hours
[01:31:26] we headed back down we stopped at the other
[01:31:28] hot and
[01:31:30] had another beer
[01:31:32] and then I headed down to
[01:31:34] Stari Smokovic
[01:31:36] said goodbye to
[01:31:38] Peter and had
[01:31:40] myself an espresso and a chocolate cake
[01:31:42] in the village and then my driver
[01:31:44] came and we headed
[01:31:46] back to Krakow
[01:31:48] wow which is great
[01:31:50] time yeah it was amazing
[01:31:52] and I didn't feel like unsafe at all
[01:31:54] Slovakia is a very safe country
[01:31:56] there's nobody at the border
[01:31:58] so you just drive right over
[01:32:00] so no issue
[01:32:02] with that and I think
[01:32:04] like I was saying to Peter I was like
[01:32:06] I think that I could spend like a lifetime
[01:32:08] here and still not see everything
[01:32:10] and he's like oh yeah he's like I still
[01:32:12] still see new things
[01:32:14] around here so the scale of this
[01:32:16] place is huge
[01:32:18] that's amazing yeah I love Europe
[01:32:20] yeah yeah it's amazing
[01:32:22] and then he's saying it's a national
[01:32:24] national park
[01:32:26] so there's no tenting, no backpacking
[01:32:28] no
[01:32:30] fishing
[01:32:32] there is no
[01:32:34] camping anywhere, no swimming in the water
[01:32:36] everything's restricted
[01:32:38] you can stay on the hiking trails
[01:32:40] you can do backcountry skiing but that's it
[01:32:42] pretty tight
[01:32:44] yeah yeah he said this is like
[01:32:46] other areas where you can do backpacking
[01:32:48] but that if you're going to do
[01:32:50] like through hiking in that area you've got to go
[01:32:52] hot to hot and that in the summertime it can
[01:32:54] be difficult to get reservations
[01:32:56] hmm
[01:32:58] and he said that I was like the first American
[01:33:00] that he had in like a year
[01:33:02] so there's not a lot of Americans that go
[01:33:04] out there he said he gets a lot of like
[01:33:06] tourists from China, India, other different
[01:33:08] areas but
[01:33:10] I think that if you're looking for an interesting
[01:33:12] place to go I would definitely check out
[01:33:14] the Tatra Mountains in Slovakia
[01:33:16] and I'll link some information
[01:33:18] about the places that I stayed
[01:33:20] and the hike that I did so that people
[01:33:22] can check it out and I'll also
[01:33:24] include the link to my guide in case anybody
[01:33:26] wants to check out his background
[01:33:28] because he's fantastic
[01:33:30] what was the elevation again?
[01:33:32] I think I went up to about
[01:33:34] 6600 feet maybe 6500
[01:33:36] and you had how much higher to go
[01:33:38] to like summit
[01:33:40] I think those peaks that were above
[01:33:42] us were like anywhere from
[01:33:44] about
[01:33:46] 8500 to about 8500
[01:33:48] okay
[01:33:50] I think so yeah I mean not
[01:33:52] you know we get up to the hut and you're like yeah this isn't
[01:33:54] that bad of a climb but they're very steep
[01:33:56] and it's not safe
[01:33:58] to go through them with the
[01:34:00] snow the way it is right now
[01:34:02] mm-hmm so
[01:34:04] and we were like you know we
[01:34:06] only had them for so long so
[01:34:08] I didn't want to extend it that much
[01:34:10] we did see like some wildlife there was
[01:34:12] these things called chamois which are like
[01:34:14] mountain goats and they were chilling out
[01:34:16] it was like a mother and a father and a baby goat
[01:34:18] mm-hmm
[01:34:20] yeah I think you might have posted
[01:34:22] a video about that yeah it was fun
[01:34:24] so we'll get you out there stop someday
[01:34:26] yeah someday
[01:34:28] I can't say I've seen
[01:34:30] those mountains you know just once
[01:34:32] in my life and they're amazing yeah
[01:34:34] so specifically in Austria
[01:34:36] it's just there's nothing like it
[01:34:38] out there it's incredible yeah it's
[01:34:40] incredible so I saw the idea
[01:34:42] I've been lucky I mean Yosemite
[01:34:44] in last fall I got to
[01:34:46] Slovakia
[01:34:48] I've been to Iceland been
[01:34:50] Seattle
[01:34:52] Portland area
[01:34:54] Arizona so yeah I got a lot more plans but
[01:34:56] I think for me I'm getting to the point
[01:34:58] in my life where I definitely want to invest
[01:35:00] more money and travel and experiences
[01:35:02] than I care about like stuff
[01:35:04] yeah what kind of stuff
[01:35:06] anything like I don't like just
[01:35:08] material yeah material stuff I don't
[01:35:10] do traveling at this point
[01:35:12] yeah I get so nervous about
[01:35:14] traveling though these days true true
[01:35:16] yeah I mean you do get nervous like
[01:35:18] okay if something crazy goes down am I going to
[01:35:20] get stuck here or like am I going to get separated
[01:35:22] like but yeah
[01:35:24] you know what are you gonna do
[01:35:26] yeah that's right
[01:35:30] let's dive into some white
[01:35:32] mountains history shall we
[01:35:40] alright stop so moving on to
[01:35:42] our next segment here
[01:35:44] you want to talk about historical markers
[01:35:48] yeah we've talked about this before and it's
[01:35:50] a neat topic reason I bring it up
[01:35:52] again I've come across a couple
[01:35:54] new ones that I want to mention
[01:35:56] but for those that don't know
[01:35:58] New Hampshire has a program
[01:36:00] and it's the New Hampshire Historical Highway
[01:36:02] Marker Program and it
[01:36:04] quote unquote the New Hampshire
[01:36:06] Historical Highway Markers
[01:36:08] illustrate the depth and complexity of the state
[01:36:10] history and the people who
[01:36:12] made it from Apanaki
[01:36:14] Native Americans to poets painters
[01:36:16] and contemporary sports figures
[01:36:18] from meeting houses to stone arch bridges
[01:36:20] and long lost villages
[01:36:22] and from factories to cemeteries
[01:36:24] and etc etc so
[01:36:26] there are currently
[01:36:28] according to the list which is available
[01:36:30] online and we will
[01:36:32] provide the list here for you there are
[01:36:34] 291
[01:36:36] historical highway markers in the state
[01:36:38] and they range
[01:36:40] from county to county it's amazing
[01:36:42] there are lists
[01:36:44] available for you to
[01:36:46] look up the location by county
[01:36:48] or the topic and all kinds of things
[01:36:50] it's really neat
[01:36:54] I ran across a couple in my
[01:36:56] journeys over to the western side
[01:36:58] of the state that I just wanted to mention
[01:37:00] this one that's really cool
[01:37:02] and
[01:37:04] it's called Wildwood
[01:37:06] and this is on the
[01:37:08] western side of the Kanganmangas
[01:37:12] and it's essentially
[01:37:14] resting at the base of Moosalach
[01:37:16] when you're driving by it
[01:37:18] and it's beautiful
[01:37:20] so apparently in this
[01:37:22] area of eastern
[01:37:24] New Hampshire
[01:37:26] it was a settlement called Wildwood
[01:37:28] and at the turn of the 20th century
[01:37:30] it was the center of slash
[01:37:32] and run logging at
[01:37:34] Moosalach
[01:37:36] there was a village with a school, a post office
[01:37:38] several sawmills
[01:37:40] a boarding house and the homes
[01:37:42] west of there there was a dam
[01:37:44] used in the spring drives that moved logs
[01:37:46] down the Aminoosic
[01:37:48] river from the mountains
[01:37:50] to southern New England
[01:37:52] I mean it's incredible
[01:37:54] when you're driving on the cank
[01:37:56] and you see the sign
[01:37:58] as you're heading from say
[01:38:00] to Lost River
[01:38:02] and you're looking to the right
[01:38:04] you can see Moosalach
[01:38:06] and you can see this entire wilderness
[01:38:08] that's in there
[01:38:10] and apparently from what I understand
[01:38:12] it connects to Tunnelbrook
[01:38:14] that's exactly where we park stomped
[01:38:16] so I saw this sign on Sunday when I left
[01:38:18] so for Wildwood
[01:38:20] exactly so if you take the
[01:38:22] you'll see the Wildwood sign off of the cank
[01:38:24] and then you just take that left
[01:38:26] into that road and that's where
[01:38:28] the road's gated right now
[01:38:30] so you can't get all the way up to Tunnelbrook
[01:38:32] it's about a mile walk right now
[01:38:34] what we had to do
[01:38:36] but that's where we parked
[01:38:38] and
[01:38:40] and then when the gate opens up
[01:38:42] you can actually get out right to Tunnelbrook trailhead
[01:38:44] but
[01:38:46] but yeah that whole area
[01:38:48] like Tunnelbrook
[01:38:50] in that area was running so fast
[01:38:52] so I can imagine like all the logging
[01:38:54] connects into those other main rivers
[01:38:56] that
[01:38:58] they must have been going crazy with the logging out there
[01:39:00] back then
[01:39:02] beautiful, yeah it's a beautiful area
[01:39:04] it's massive
[01:39:06] there's a second one that I discovered on
[01:39:08] Route 25 south
[01:39:10] heading south through Warren
[01:39:12] and it took me three or four passes
[01:39:14] to stop and actually finally read it
[01:39:16] and it says Sarah and the bear
[01:39:18] and this is a really neat one
[01:39:20] so Sarah and the bear refers to an
[01:39:22] legend from 1783 involving
[01:39:24] a young girl named Sarah, Witcher
[01:39:26] Sarah got lost
[01:39:28] in the woods near Warren, New Hampshire
[01:39:30] and was protected by a black bear
[01:39:32] until her rescue as the
[01:39:34] story goes. The story has been
[01:39:36] retold in books such as quote
[01:39:38] The Bear That Heard Crying
[01:39:40] by Natalie Kinsey-Warnock
[01:39:42] and quote Sarah Witcher's
[01:39:44] story by Elizabeth Yates
[01:39:46] the legend is also
[01:39:48] commemorated with
[01:39:50] the historical marker
[01:39:52] and that marker is number 275
[01:39:56] amazing isn't it? Yeah, yeah
[01:39:58] and I've seen
[01:40:00] that one before. I think we've covered that one before
[01:40:02] so it's an interesting story
[01:40:04] Yeah, take this one
[01:40:06] last one here like just randomly
[01:40:08] on the list number 289
[01:40:10] is a marker in Dover
[01:40:12] and it is the creation
[01:40:14] of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
[01:40:16] in Central Ave across
[01:40:18] from Union Street. Really?
[01:40:20] The Ninja Turtles in New Hampshire?
[01:40:22] That's what it says
[01:40:24] so take a look through the list
[01:40:26] there's 30 pages
[01:40:28] of markers that you can look through
[01:40:30] they're incredible, there's so much history in this state
[01:40:32] it's wild. Yeah, it is so interesting
[01:40:34] and like there is one other one
[01:40:36] over to the west
[01:40:38] of
[01:40:40] Wildwood there's another one that's called
[01:40:42] Pike Tract which is
[01:40:44] the first piece of
[01:40:48] land that was purchased
[01:40:50] it was like
[01:40:52] 7,000 acres of timber covered
[01:40:54] mountain slopes, cliffs
[01:40:56] in streams and farmlands
[01:40:58] from a businessman from Haverland, New Hampshire
[01:41:00] named Bertram Pike
[01:41:02] and that was in like 1914
[01:41:04] so the purchase was the first
[01:41:06] acquisition towards the establishment
[01:41:08] of the White Mountain National Forest
[01:41:10] in 1918
[01:41:12] so like the Weeks Act came in
[01:41:14] on like the early 1910s
[01:41:16] and then they started moving pretty quickly
[01:41:18] they bought this piece of
[01:41:20] this piece of land
[01:41:22] and then they were able to establish the National Forest
[01:41:24] like four years later
[01:41:26] so it started
[01:41:28] with 7,000 acres and then
[01:41:30] finally they've got about 800,000 acres now
[01:41:34] Wow. So it all began
[01:41:36] way out west over by Haverland
[01:41:38] Yeah, yeah
[01:41:40] Wasn't surprising.
[01:41:42] It's a really cool part of the state.
[01:41:44] It is.
[01:42:14] All right, stop.
[01:42:16] So now we're going to move on
[01:42:18] to some recent search and rescue news
[01:42:20] so I pulled this article here
[01:42:22] this is interesting
[01:42:24] I think this is one we got to keep an eye on
[01:42:26] my radar always goes up
[01:42:28] whenever a husband and a wife are hiking
[01:42:30] and the husband and the wife
[01:42:32] randomly falls off a cliff
[01:42:34] Yeah, right, right
[01:42:36] so this is one matter of fact
[01:42:38] I've hiked in this area
[01:42:40] so the first thing I did
[01:42:42] was I've hiked in this area
[01:42:44] so this is out of Sedona in Arizona
[01:42:46] so
[01:42:48] Zainab Joseph 40 years old
[01:42:50] died on Monday after a group of hikers
[01:42:52] found her during their trek
[01:42:54] along Bear Mountain in Sedona
[01:42:56] so I actually didn't hike Bear Mountain
[01:42:58] just because it was a little bit too far
[01:43:00] but Bear Mountain is like kind of close
[01:43:02] to what's called the Devil's Bridge
[01:43:04] which is a pretty famous hike out there
[01:43:06] but it's a little bit of a longer hike
[01:43:08] I'm sort of curious that this couple
[01:43:10] they were with a one year old kid
[01:43:12] and they chose to do Bear Mountain
[01:43:14] it's a little bit of an advanced hike
[01:43:16] and there's not a lot of shade or coverage there
[01:43:18] so anyway
[01:43:20] so Zainab had fallen down a cliff
[01:43:22] when the hikers heard yelling
[01:43:24] and subsequently discovered her alive
[01:43:26] with serious injuries
[01:43:28] a person called 911
[01:43:30] like why would the person call 911
[01:43:32] and the husband wouldn't call 911
[01:43:34] anyway
[01:43:36] another person walked down
[01:43:38] the embankment and confirmed
[01:43:40] that she was still breathing
[01:43:42] she died soon after the sheriff's office
[01:43:44] noting that Sedona fire officials
[01:43:46] pronounced her dead as they were the first
[01:43:48] responding unit to arrive at the scene
[01:43:50] she was apparently hiking
[01:43:52] with her husband and one year old child
[01:43:54] the three had traveled from California
[01:43:56] to Sedona where they rented an Airbnb
[01:43:58] the husband and child
[01:44:00] were airlifted from the mountain
[01:44:02] as authorities worked to recover the body
[01:44:04] the sheriff did not say
[01:44:06] anyone else was hurt
[01:44:08] and the circumstances around her death
[01:44:10] and exactly what caused it are under investigation
[01:44:12] so
[01:44:14] I think if it was like an obvious slip
[01:44:16] they would have basically covered the husband
[01:44:18] but I think that
[01:44:20] the officers are conducting interviews with the hikers
[01:44:22] leaving Bear Mountain in the wake of the death
[01:44:24] and asked anyone who may have
[01:44:26] witnessed the incident to contact the sheriff
[01:44:28] so
[01:44:30] a little fishy
[01:44:32] sounds a little sketchy
[01:44:34] my default I'm always like
[01:44:36] suspicious
[01:44:38] yeah but they found her alive
[01:44:40] yeah and then she died
[01:44:42] just breathing but
[01:44:44] barely conscious or able to speak
[01:44:46] or what
[01:44:48] so
[01:44:50] alright sad
[01:44:52] stop what is this
[01:44:54] what is this article
[01:44:56] what is this
[01:44:58] two hikers
[01:45:00] where is this
[01:45:02] I had to do it because we never get
[01:45:04] search and rescue from the Emirate
[01:45:06] oh that's what this is the UAE
[01:45:08] yeah
[01:45:10] it's a very unusual story
[01:45:12] but you may be
[01:45:14] blocking at the way
[01:45:16] I posted it but that's exactly what the article says
[01:45:18] two Asians
[01:45:20] yeah no I just couldn't know
[01:45:22] where it was
[01:45:24] yeah it's unusual
[01:45:26] but yeah apparently
[01:45:28] there's been a search and rescue in the Emirates
[01:45:30] but they're very
[01:45:32] specific so it's two Asians
[01:45:34] were stuck in a mountainous area
[01:45:36] in the Emirate
[01:45:38] at an altitude of 4,500 feet
[01:45:40] and
[01:45:42] they were stuck in a mountainous area
[01:45:44] one had a broken leg
[01:45:46] and
[01:45:48] a wing section of the Emirate had to
[01:45:50] conduct a mission
[01:45:52] to rescue them so it's pretty interesting
[01:45:54] you don't hear too much out of this area
[01:45:56] yeah I don't really know anything about it
[01:45:58] but
[01:46:00] it's weird interesting right?
[01:46:02] yeah they're definitely not politically correct in their newspapers here
[01:46:04] but whatever oh exactly
[01:46:06] I just pulled it right the way it was
[01:46:08] written like oh that's
[01:46:10] an interesting headline
[01:46:12] Stomp you're trying to get it cancelled
[01:46:14] what the heck
[01:46:18] hey it's important we can know
[01:46:20] what nationality and ethnicity they were
[01:46:22] I guess
[01:46:24] all right moving on to a
[01:46:26] local story here so this is
[01:46:28] I don't know
[01:46:30] what's going on around Mount Cube
[01:46:32] I feel like the mountain gods have
[01:46:34] cursed Mount Cube over the last year and a
[01:46:36] half or so busy
[01:46:38] busy spot busy spot for sure
[01:46:40] so just after 3pm
[01:46:42] on oh maybe it's just like
[01:46:44] I feel like the people that
[01:46:46] get in trouble on
[01:46:50] on Mount Cube are more
[01:46:52] locals so maybe it's just New Hampshire
[01:46:54] people can't hike
[01:46:56] ooh now
[01:46:58] we'll get cancelled now we're gonna get cancelled
[01:47:00] all right so after 3pm on Thursday
[01:47:02] April 11th conservation officers
[01:47:04] from fishing game were made aware of an injured
[01:47:06] hiker on the summit of Mount Cube
[01:47:08] so this is a 56 year old female
[01:47:10] alright so it's just a slip and fall
[01:47:12] so it's not her fault
[01:47:14] so it's just a stuff happens
[01:47:16] type of situation so 56 year old
[01:47:18] female had fallen on slippery wet rocks
[01:47:20] and had sustained
[01:47:22] an upper leg injury which prevented her
[01:47:24] from being able to continue
[01:47:26] the rescue is from Upper Valley
[01:47:28] Wilderness Response Team
[01:47:30] Warford Fire
[01:47:32] Wentworth Fire they roll out
[01:47:34] like I noticed too this is like the area
[01:47:36] of the whites where they roll out all
[01:47:38] the local fire departments
[01:47:40] so it was like 6 different local
[01:47:42] fire departments including some from Vermont
[01:47:44] the first rescuers
[01:47:46] so 3pm the call came in
[01:47:48] first rescuers got there by 5
[01:47:50] issues about 2.2 miles
[01:47:52] from the trailhead on the Cross Rivendale
[01:47:54] Trail so Cross Rivendale
[01:47:56] you're basically coming in from the
[01:47:58] north west
[01:48:00] that way the injured
[01:48:02] hiker was from Merrimack, New Hampshire
[01:48:04] due to the nature of the injuries
[01:48:06] they package in a rescue litter with
[01:48:08] a carryout commencing shortly after
[01:48:10] 6 so 3pm
[01:48:12] call 5pm arrival
[01:48:14] it takes about an hour to get her set up
[01:48:16] is that normal stuff does it usually take like
[01:48:18] an hour to get somebody settled into the litter
[01:48:20] and everything
[01:48:24] sure, yeah, absolutely
[01:48:26] so you get it like
[01:48:28] basically like
[01:48:30] splint up the injury
[01:48:32] and make sure that they're comfortable
[01:48:34] and warm and
[01:48:36] hydrating it depends on the severity
[01:48:38] of the injury
[01:48:40] but once people arrive
[01:48:42] I mean that's that arrival
[01:48:44] time is a whole other metric so
[01:48:46] once we arrive
[01:48:48] and the litter arrives and we're able to
[01:48:50] actually move somebody
[01:48:52] that can be, oh yeah
[01:48:54] 30 minutes to an hour of easy
[01:48:56] it sounds like this was a brutal one
[01:48:58] because once they got her
[01:49:00] packaged up
[01:49:02] about half of that 2.2 miles out
[01:49:04] with snow and ice covered with deep
[01:49:06] snow in some areas so
[01:49:08] they were post-holing through much of the higher elevations
[01:49:10] and eventually
[01:49:12] they made it to the
[01:49:14] 7.45 and the victim
[01:49:16] was transported to Dartmouth
[01:49:18] Hitchcock Medical Center
[01:49:20] for assessment and treatment
[01:49:22] over injuries
[01:49:24] Fish and Game gives the victim a big
[01:49:26] shout out, she was well prepared
[01:49:28] for a winter day hike
[01:49:30] and was wearing micro-spike traction devices so
[01:49:34] you know, bravo to her
[01:49:38] yeah no doubt, so hopefully she's
[01:49:40] recovering
[01:49:42] event, fall into your data
[01:49:46] this would be a lower leg
[01:49:48] I mean it's an upper leg but I would just call this
[01:49:50] like a lower leg injury that is
[01:49:54] what do I call it
[01:49:56] well what about gender
[01:49:58] wasn't there a difference between the genders
[01:50:02] I mean I think the gender
[01:50:04] differences for search and rescue
[01:50:06] is essentially like
[01:50:08] older women
[01:50:10] tend to
[01:50:12] have like more lower
[01:50:14] leg injury stuff
[01:50:16] and then younger men tend
[01:50:18] to have more like reckless
[01:50:20] activities but
[01:50:22] this would be like a non-negligent
[01:50:24] or no negligence
[01:50:26] you know slip and fall type
[01:50:28] of lower leg injury so
[01:50:30] yeah, so I mean it's
[01:50:34] it's tough like I look for patterns on
[01:50:36] things and there are a few patterns but it's just
[01:50:38] over time
[01:50:40] like you just sort of like all these lower
[01:50:42] leg injuries like they can happen to anybody
[01:50:44] I've seen them, young people, old
[01:50:46] people, men, women
[01:50:48] doesn't matter
[01:50:50] got it
[01:50:54] so that's it for our show
[01:50:56] Stomp Tonight
[01:50:58] we made it
[01:51:00] sorry I wasn't as funny as Dave Schitt's in the woods but I'll try
[01:51:04] nor I
[01:51:06] I think you and I should just hand the torch to Dave
[01:51:10] no he's great, he's great so we'll get him back on
[01:51:12] but we will see you
