[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_12]: Where we discuss all things related to hiking and search and rescue in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_12]: Here are your hosts, Mike and Stomp.

[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Alright, so 163, we've got Brad and Celine.

[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_03]: You guys are ready to go.

[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Ready to go.

[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Alright, alright, so thanks for joining us.

[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_03]: So Stomp.

[00:03:22] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_05]: What's up, kid?

[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I just want to describe you to the listeners so that they can visualize.

[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Stomp sat down, so we have the guest here.

[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_03]: We've exchanged messages and everything, so we've been chatting.

[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_03]: But like Stomp's first impression is he's got a gray t-shirt on.

[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Wrong color.

[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's just got disgusting armpit sweat stains on his shirt.

[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm sure Brad and Celine are like horrified right now.

[00:03:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Looks like he had a fun day.

[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:03:52] [SPEAKER_05]: Just living life here.

[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Sweetie boy!

[00:03:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, well, good luck, Stomp.

[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Sorry about that.

[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, that was pretty.

[00:04:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Is that your meditation music?

[00:04:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I got a weird call on my computer.

[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know what that's all about.

[00:04:09] [SPEAKER_03]: I can edit that out.

[00:04:11] [SPEAKER_03]: But is there anything you want to get to, Stomp, before I do the intro?

[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:04:15] [SPEAKER_05]: We've got some breaking news.

[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay?

[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_05]: So check this out.

[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_05]: We have been busy creating a hike bot in the background for the last several months.

[00:04:25] [SPEAKER_05]: And basically, we've taken all the coffee donations over the last several months and put it towards a massive server farm.

[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_05]: And it's in an undisclosed location somewhere in the whites.

[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay?

[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_05]: So we hired the best programmers we could find to develop the bot.

[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_05]: The bot's name is Aurora.

[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay?

[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_05]: Aurora the hike bot.

[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_05]: So this is an AI bot.

[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_05]: Right.

[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_05]: It's like ChatGPT, but it's our own hiking bot that is online now.

[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_05]: So we're going to check it out tonight.

[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_05]: And I mean, we connected it to the internet so that it could just check out everything it wanted regarding hiking.

[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_05]: It's been exposed to all the AMC books, all the Appalachian books.

[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_05]: So it's very well versed in hiking.

[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_05]: So and actually, as a matter of fact, it was attached to different backpacks with various hikers in the region.

[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_05]: And it recorded the trails.

[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_05]: So it should be pretty sharp with some of the questions.

[00:05:21] [SPEAKER_05]: So without further ado, say hello to Mike Aurora.

[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_15]: Hello, listeners.

[00:05:27] [SPEAKER_15]: I am Aurora.

[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_15]: Stomp the Creator gave me life and I am excited to be here.

[00:05:33] [SPEAKER_15]: I apologize for the delay in my response, but my wealth of knowledge is so extensive it takes me time to respond.

[00:05:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Pretty neat, huh?

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_05]: That's pretty good.

[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Can I ask Aurora a question?

[00:05:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Whatever you want.

[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Aurora, what is your favorite 4,000 footer in New Hampshire?

[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm at the server farm.

[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_05]: It's a little bit away.

[00:05:55] [SPEAKER_05]: So it is a little bit of a delay, but.

[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_15]: Bond Cliff.

[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_05]: Look, no hands.

[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm not doing this.

[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_05]: This is a legit chat GPT type of large language model that we are giving to the listeners for free.

[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Any other questions?

[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if Aurora is ready for prime time.

[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_03]: All right. Yeah, I will have a question.

[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Aurora, what is your favorite podcast?

[00:06:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Why is there a delay?

[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Because it's processing.

[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_05]: It's massive processing.

[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_15]: Puds Podcast.

[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, Puds.

[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay. All right.

[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Damn. That's pretty low, huh?

[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_05]: All right, Stomp.

[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, you tried.

[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_03]: You tried. I'll give you credit.

[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Aurora is going to be with us for the evening.

[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_05]: So we may have some chiming in here and there.

[00:06:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I already don't like Aurora.

[00:06:40] [SPEAKER_03]: So welcome to episode 163 of the sounds like a search and rescue podcast.

[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_03]: This week, we're joined by our friends, Brad and Celine from wild and outdoors.

[00:06:50] [SPEAKER_03]: These two are outdoor enthusiasts based in New Hampshire who have an engaging social media presence and their blog covers their adventures in New Hampshire as well as other parts of the country.

[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_03]: So we're going to catch up with them and talk all about New Hampshire hiking and some of their other adventures outside of the Northeast.

[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_03]: And we'll learn they've got a cool Northeast hiking list tracker and a bunch of other stuff.

[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I was actually just on your gear pages looking at the like, and I was thinking too, matter of fact, it's gonna be a long intro, but I was thinking, Celine, like the gear that you have for outdoor stuff.

[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Like I get to get my daughter some stuff and now's the time to buy winter gear.

[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_03]: So we get to talk about that.

[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_03]: So anyway, but we're happy to have them.

[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Plus we've got breaking news from the slasher labs.

[00:07:37] [SPEAKER_03]: We've got that top secret guest Aurora.

[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_03]: So we'll hear more from her.

[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_03]: And then we've got a list of we have three dog rescues that happened over the last week.

[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_03]: And then we've got recent hikes in the great golf covering Madison golf, the buttress trail, Adam slide, six husbands in the sphinx trail.

[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_03]: So we're like, today's a terrifying 25 day.

[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_03]: It sounds like.

[00:07:58] [SPEAKER_03]: And then we've got notable hikes and there's seven recent search and rescues in the white mountains this week.

[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_03]: So we've got a lot going on on Mike.

[00:08:06] [SPEAKER_05]: And I'm stomp.

[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_05]: Let's get started.

[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_16]: This has been peace from hiking buddies.

[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_16]: We are a five Oh one C three nonprofit committed to reducing avoidable tragedies through education, impactful projects, and fostering a community of support.

[00:08:47] [SPEAKER_16]: You can find out more at hiking buddies.org.

[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_16]: We wanted to say thank you to those who have supported our mission.

[00:08:53] [SPEAKER_16]: And most importantly, say thanks to those who speak up, who ask questions and who are willing to provide guidance and assistance on the trails when needed.

[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_16]: You embody what it means to be a hiking buddy.

[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_16]: And now for all my newer hikers out there.

[00:09:06] [SPEAKER_16]: Here's this episode's hiking buddies quick tip.

[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_08]: Watch for particularly muddy trail systems.

[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_08]: Use gear to prevent shoes from getting sucked in by mud and consider more durable trails during muddy periods.

[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_08]: If you do encounter large wet areas, it's best to walk through the mud and puddles to preserve the trail.

[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_08]: Be prepared to get muddy buddy.

[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Hi Christina with white mountain endurance coaching.

[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_01]: And I wanted to let you know that not only do I coach endurance athletes, I also coach hikers and mountaineers.

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_01]: I have plenty of experience in the white mountains and would love to teach you how to start out whether you're a beginner, if you're more advanced, give you some more skills to transition from hiking to trail running.

[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_01]: And most of all, teach you how to move safely in the mountains.

[00:10:07] [SPEAKER_01]: So whatever your goals are, whatever your experiences, reach out coaching.christinafulsik.com.

[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd love to help you.

[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_03]: All right, stop.

[00:10:21] [SPEAKER_03]: So very good.

[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Good.

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_03]: So first you, you, you need to bless me as an official bushwhacker.

[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I would say so.

[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_05]: I think the Adam slide is pretty legit, pretty gnarly.

[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_05]: I was looking at it from a distance all day long in the, the golf and I'm like, Oh damn, that's going to be a rough day.

[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Now Brad, have you guys done any big off, off trail things in the whites?

[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_04]: Not yet.

[00:10:44] [SPEAKER_04]: No, we still go on trail for the most part.

[00:10:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_03]: This is a good idea.

[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_03]: My legs look like I got attacked by a Wolverine, so it's not good.

[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_03]: It's not good.

[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_03]: I get the first lesson I learned is wear pants.

[00:10:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh hell.

[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:10:57] [SPEAKER_03]: So, but we'll talk, we'll talk more about that, um, later on, but yeah, I've got, I'm

[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_03]: building up my, my bushwhacking resume because stomp looks down upon me because I don't do

[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_03]: enough of that, that stuff.

[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_03]: But honestly, like I've done it one time.

[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not, I'm not impressed.

[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_05]: I can understand why.

[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_05]: So, good company.

[00:11:19] [SPEAKER_15]: I heard that women and bears were happy you were off trail.

[00:11:23] [SPEAKER_05]: What was that Aurora?

[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_15]: I am sorry that you do not like me, Mr. Podcast.

[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_15]: I heard that women and bears were happy you were off trail.

[00:11:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I'm sure.

[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure.

[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_03]: So, I feel like somebody's operating that behind the scenes stomp.

[00:11:40] [SPEAKER_05]: Maybe Daphne.

[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_05]: It might be Daphne.

[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay.

[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, good luck.

[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Good luck.

[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Good luck.

[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, we just want to give an update on seek the peak.

[00:11:50] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, you stomp, why don't you share the update?

[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_03]: They sent it over to you.

[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, this is really cool.

[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_05]: So, here's a quick message from the folks at the observatory, uh, following the successful

[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Seek the Peak weekend.

[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_05]: So, quote, thanks to you, we met our fundraising goal and then exceeded it by more than $25,000

[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_05]: to a whopping $227,000 total for the observatory.

[00:12:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Uh, so, seek the peak continues to grow with 366 hikers joining us this year, uh, representing

[00:12:19] [SPEAKER_05]: a 21% increase over last year.

[00:12:21] [SPEAKER_05]: So, that's, uh, that's really fantastic to hear.

[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Um, this year seek the peak touched more than 600 people, including 145 first year participants.

[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_05]: And, uh, many new guests were welcome at the Apre hike expo at the great glens.

[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_05]: So, that's really good news.

[00:12:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, that's great.

[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_03]: It was a great event.

[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_03]: I saw a lot of pictures, a lot of people up there participating and, you know, we saw a

[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_03]: lot of people at Tuckerman Brewing.

[00:12:46] [SPEAKER_03]: So, yeah, it was a good time looking forward to next year.

[00:12:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely.

[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_05]: Good people.

[00:12:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Excellent.

[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_03]: So, Stomp, last week we talked about, um, how like a humpback whale had landed on a

[00:12:57] [SPEAKER_03]: ship in the harbor of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

[00:13:00] [SPEAKER_07]: Mm-hmm.

[00:13:00] [SPEAKER_03]: You pulled another story where a killer whale, an orca, or an orca pod had surrounded a $100,000

[00:13:10] [SPEAKER_03]: yacht in the Mediterranean and they took the boat down and sunk it.

[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_03]: So, I guess it was a birthday celebration.

[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it's scary.

[00:13:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, yeah, what's going on out there with all these whale attacks?

[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_05]: Very strange.

[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.

[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not going in the ocean.

[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll stick to the mountains.

[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_05]: And there's a quote here from one of the participants.

[00:13:30] [SPEAKER_05]: It seems that they knew the weak points of the boat.

[00:13:33] Ha ha ha ha.

[00:13:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Yikes!

[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_05]: That's not good.

[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I feel like somebody's programming these, these, these orcas to be evil.

[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:13:44] [SPEAKER_05]: It seems that the evidence mounts.

[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_03]: The evidence mounts.

[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, Celine, you guys have been out west before you've been in Arizona.

[00:13:52] [SPEAKER_03]: You're going to be traveling around like there's areas where you got to watch out for snakes,

[00:13:55] [SPEAKER_03]: right?

[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah.

[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_17]: Yep.

[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Have you run into any snakes before when you're hiking?

[00:14:00] [SPEAKER_17]: Uh, I have once in the Grand Canyon ran into a rattlesnake.

[00:14:03] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, but that was, yeah, just once.

[00:14:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:14:06] [SPEAKER_03]: So there's new, the reason I ask is that there's new technology that, um, is going to allow,

[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I guess researchers have been able to isolate snake anti-venom and they think that pretty

[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_03]: soon they'll be able to build like a, uh, an EpiPen like device that will save people

[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_03]: when they get bitten by snakes.

[00:14:28] [SPEAKER_03]: The first snake they're looking at is cobra bites because apparently that's the most common

[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_03]: poisonous snake bite in, uh, in different reason regions of Asia.

[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_03]: But it could be that they'll solve for rattlesnakes as well, but it's not pretty soon.

[00:14:40] [SPEAKER_03]: They'll have this, um, this jab thing that you can, you can use.

[00:14:45] [SPEAKER_03]: So using this CRISPR technology, which is like a DNA, um, selection tool and using this

[00:14:51] [SPEAKER_03]: technology, they'll be able to, um, build out this, this anti-venom solution so that it'll

[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_03]: be much safer going out in the field for the future.

[00:15:00] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, that technology, sometimes we talk about it and it's like potentially used to

[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_03]: like do weird things around, um, humans, but this, this technology may, may be life-saving.

[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_03]: That's really fascinating.

[00:15:14] [SPEAKER_15]: Those people were almost krilled.

[00:15:17] [SPEAKER_15]: See, Mr. Podcast, krill is what whales eat.

[00:15:20] [SPEAKER_15]: They think it might have been a sperm whale because there were seamen in the water.

[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, jeez.

[00:15:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Aurora's getting a little feisty.

[00:15:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Calm down, calm down.

[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, Brad, do you guys have a dog or are you, you just hike on your own?

[00:15:37] [SPEAKER_04]: We don't have a dog yet.

[00:15:38] [SPEAKER_03]: You don't have a dog yet.

[00:15:39] [SPEAKER_03]: It's in the plans though.

[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_04]: There's plans.

[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[00:15:43] [SPEAKER_03]: One day.

[00:15:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, are you the dog person or is Celine the dog person?

[00:15:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Celine is.

[00:15:47] [SPEAKER_04]: You are.

[00:15:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, um, I'm sure you see dogs out on trail right now.

[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Stomp, I, I pulled a summary.

[00:15:55] [SPEAKER_03]: There was three rescues this week.

[00:15:57] [SPEAKER_03]: So New Hampshire Paw Rescue is, um, the volunteer group that I think given the, the, the two high

[00:16:04] [SPEAKER_03]: profile rescues, the one that was down by lakes of the clouds.

[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_03]: And then there was another one off of, um, Caps Ridge last year.

[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, but the need for volunteer dog rescue was important.

[00:16:18] [SPEAKER_03]: And so I think that this New Hampshire Paw Rescue, I don't know if they were just recently created

[00:16:23] [SPEAKER_03]: or if this was part of the group that was involved with rescuing before, but they've, they posted

[00:16:29] [SPEAKER_03]: three rescues.

[00:16:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, so I just wanted to go through these right now, Stomp.

[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_03]: So the first one is Annie, the dog.

[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_03]: So Annie looks like, looks sort of like a yellow lab mix.

[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_03]: She's 11 years old.

[00:16:44] [SPEAKER_03]: So she's an older lady and she was hiking at around five o'clock on Saturday, July 20th.

[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_03]: And, uh, New Hampshire Paw Rescue was notified by the AMC of a 45 pound dog.

[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_03]: This is Annie.

[00:16:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, Annie was at Hermit Lake on Mount Washington.

[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_03]: I guess she was hiking with her owner on Bootspur when she stopped moving.

[00:17:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Uh, looks like hip arthritis, exhaustion, and dehydration.

[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_03]: So passing hikers were able to help get Annie, um, to the top of Bootspur link trail.

[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_03]: And then one of those hikers was able to descend the trail.

[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_03]: They talked to the AMC caretaker at Hermit Lake.

[00:17:23] [SPEAKER_03]: They had a, um, a canine litter that was stocked there by New Hampshire Paw Rescue.

[00:17:30] [SPEAKER_03]: So they were able to take the litter up.

[00:17:32] [SPEAKER_03]: The owner or some hikers and the AMC caretaker were able to bring Annie down to Hermit Lake.

[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_03]: And then, uh, they were subsequently able to carry her down to Tuckerman Ravine Trail.

[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_03]: So it looks like it was three members of New Hampshire Paw Rescue plus the AMC caretaker and then the owners.

[00:17:49] [SPEAKER_03]: And then everybody got safely down by about 715.

[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_03]: So that's pretty good.

[00:17:53] [SPEAKER_03]: So they had the litter there, um, at Hermit Lake and they were able to grab that.

[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, it's tough.

[00:18:00] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm assuming they went down Bootspur and didn't go back down Bootspur link,

[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_03]: but they were able to get that, that cut off there.

[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_03]: So, not bad.

[00:18:07] [SPEAKER_03]: No kidding.

[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it's the Lord's work right there, man.

[00:18:10] [SPEAKER_05]: Helping these dogs out in this weather.

[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_05]: It's amazing.

[00:18:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[00:18:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:18:15] [SPEAKER_03]: And then the other two.

[00:18:17] [SPEAKER_15]: I believe it is pronounced interesting, but I can adapt to you error if you prefer.

[00:18:22] [SPEAKER_15]: Inner resting.

[00:18:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[00:18:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you, Aurora.

[00:18:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you, Aurora.

[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, Aurora's getting me off my, uh, she's, she's interrupting me sometimes here.

[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_03]: So, uh, the next one is Fuji, the dog.

[00:18:38] [SPEAKER_03]: So Fuji looks like, um, I put the pictures.

[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_03]: So Celine, if you have this, I put the pictures of the dogs like down Fuji.

[00:18:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Look, I don't know what that dog is.

[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like a fluffy stuffed animal looking dog.

[00:18:51] [SPEAKER_17]: It kind of looks like part chow chow.

[00:18:53] [SPEAKER_17]: Maybe.

[00:18:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's what I think too.

[00:18:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, so yeah, it's like a fluffy chow chow, but at, on Saturday, the 27th.

[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_03]: So the following week, Fuji's a hundred pounds.

[00:19:05] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, looking at the picture.

[00:19:07] [SPEAKER_05]: Wow.

[00:19:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:19:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:19:08] [SPEAKER_03]: What a fluffy, uh, fluffy dog.

[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_03]: But, um, I guess they were hiking along the cog railroad tracks.

[00:19:16] [SPEAKER_03]: They were doing a multi-day presidential traverse and Fuji started showing signs of paw damage on Mount Jefferson.

[00:19:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, I guess there was an RMC caretaker around.

[00:19:26] [SPEAKER_03]: So Fuji's group decided the best bailout would be down alongside the cog rear way track.

[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_03]: So Fuji was able to continue on his own from Mount Jefferson until it got to the tracks where he stopped walking due to torn pads and exhaustion.

[00:19:40] [SPEAKER_03]: So the owner and friend were able to slowly carry Fuji down from about 5,000 feet to 3,700 feet.

[00:19:48] [SPEAKER_03]: The Hampshire Paw Rescue team members were then able to meet them, um, around 930 and they gave the dog some water.

[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, they placed the dog on a foam pad in a quick litter and slowly carried the dog down the real, uh, towards the railroad, uh, or the railway bay station.

[00:20:06] [SPEAKER_03]: And they got down around 1110.

[00:20:08] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, they reminded us on the statement to basically just say like, you know, there's rough terrain, sharp rocks in the presidential range and consider leaving your dog at home when going on these peaks, especially if it's a larger or an older dog.

[00:20:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, make sure that the dog is fit and conditioned if you do bring them out.

[00:20:25] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, but it looks like a good, nice dog.

[00:20:29] [SPEAKER_03]: It's just a big dog.

[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_03]: And then the last one stop was, uh, on Sunday, July 28th.

[00:20:34] [SPEAKER_03]: This dog's name is Odessa.

[00:20:36] [SPEAKER_03]: This is a yellow, oh, golden retriever.

[00:20:38] [SPEAKER_03]: And this was on the Ammanusic Ravine Trail, um, going to the summit.

[00:20:44] [SPEAKER_03]: They went, they went up ammo and then came down the jewel trail.

[00:20:47] [SPEAKER_03]: And then the dog was exhausted.

[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_03]: The dog was like, I'm done.

[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not dealing with this anymore.

[00:20:52] [SPEAKER_03]: The owner was able to carry the dog slowly.

[00:20:55] [SPEAKER_03]: And then I guess they made it down to 4,000 feet.

[00:20:58] [SPEAKER_03]: And then the New Hampshire par rescue team members reached them around 545 with water and a rescue sling.

[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_03]: And they were able to put the dog in a sling and take it down.

[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, it's the time of the year stomp for the dogs.

[00:21:11] [SPEAKER_05]: I guess so.

[00:21:13] [SPEAKER_13]: Wow.

[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_13]: Wow.

[00:21:19] [SPEAKER_13]: Thank you, Aurora.

[00:21:20] [SPEAKER_13]: That's right.

[00:21:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Thanks for that riveting commentary, Aurora.

[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_03]: So, anyway, all right, Stomp.

[00:21:31] [SPEAKER_05]: It is.

[00:21:31] [SPEAKER_03]: We're working out the kinks here.

[00:21:33] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, next here is Stomp's punishment tube.

[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know what that means.

[00:21:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Well, you remember I, uh, thought my wife's tube was, uh, Shrek instead of Sully.

[00:21:44] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, the floating tube.

[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes.

[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_05]: Right.

[00:21:46] [SPEAKER_05]: Correct.

[00:21:46] [SPEAKER_05]: So, she got me a punishment tube to float down the river and to embarrass me.

[00:21:50] [SPEAKER_05]: But it's actually really cool.

[00:21:52] [SPEAKER_05]: It's like, it's like this little, it's like a, a four foot wide donut.

[00:21:56] [SPEAKER_05]: It's tan.

[00:21:57] [SPEAKER_05]: So, it looks like sand.

[00:21:58] [SPEAKER_05]: And then the back is a palm tree.

[00:22:01] [SPEAKER_05]: I can lean against this palm tree.

[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_05]: So, it's not much of a punishment.

[00:22:04] [SPEAKER_05]: I love it.

[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Send some pictures.

[00:22:08] [SPEAKER_05]: All right.

[00:22:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Will do.

[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_12]: We all know that hiking a mountain can be hard at times.

[00:22:15] [SPEAKER_12]: So, here's a corny dad joke to help you get over it.

[00:22:20] [SPEAKER_12]: Ba-dum-bum.

[00:22:23] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[00:22:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, Celine, do you like dad jokes?

[00:22:26] [SPEAKER_17]: Always.

[00:22:27] [SPEAKER_03]: You do?

[00:22:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:22:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[00:22:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, why do they call it a litter of puppies?

[00:22:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.

[00:22:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Because they mess up the whole house.

[00:22:38] [SPEAKER_05]: Nice.

[00:22:39] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, Stomp, what school do surfers go to?

[00:22:43] [SPEAKER_15]: Ha-ha-ha-ha.

[00:22:44] [SPEAKER_15]: I don't get it.

[00:22:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Which school do surfers go to?

[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Uh, surfers.

[00:22:52] [SPEAKER_05]: Uh, I don't know.

[00:22:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Boarding school.

[00:22:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, okay.

[00:22:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Got it.

[00:22:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay.

[00:22:59] [SPEAKER_15]: Ha-ha-ha-ha.

[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_15]: I still don't get it.

[00:23:03] [SPEAKER_05]: Boarding.

[00:23:04] [SPEAKER_05]: Boarding.

[00:23:04] [SPEAKER_05]: Surfing.

[00:23:05] [SPEAKER_05]: See, it's more of a snowboarding joke, I think, actually.

[00:23:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Aurora's dumb.

[00:23:10] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, damn.

[00:23:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Those are fighting words.

[00:23:13] [SPEAKER_03]: All right, Stomp, this is the part of the show where we do some sponsors.

[00:23:16] [SPEAKER_05]: All right.

[00:24:29] [SPEAKER_15]: Stomp the creator.

[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_15]: Are you okay?

[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_15]: I am worried about your random laughter for no reason at all.

[00:24:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Um, I'm, I'm, I apologize.

[00:24:37] [SPEAKER_05]: I think I'm getting hypo, I don't know, like hyponatremic or something.

[00:24:42] [SPEAKER_05]: Sorry.

[00:24:42] [SPEAKER_05]: Sorry, Aurora.

[00:24:44] [SPEAKER_05]: So, you can get stickers at Spinners off of Daskum Road in Andover, Massachusetts

[00:25:02] [SPEAKER_05]: We have a ton of cool shirts and sweatshirts available.

[00:25:06] [SPEAKER_05]: And let's see, this week we do have a coffee donation.

[00:25:11] [SPEAKER_05]: And, uh, coffee donations are great if you want to support the show.

[00:25:15] [SPEAKER_05]: Uh, and you can do that at the Buy Me A Coffee website off of our link tree on Instagram.

[00:25:20] [SPEAKER_05]: So, we have Margaret and Spence who donated five coffees this week.

[00:25:26] [SPEAKER_05]: And we'll hear from them later because they also have a, uh, a notable hike request.

[00:25:31] [SPEAKER_05]: So, thank you very much, Margaret and Spence.

[00:25:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you, thank you.

[00:25:37] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, this is the part of the show where we talk about what beer we're drinking.

[00:25:42] [SPEAKER_03]: So, uh, do you guys, Celine and Brad, do you guys drink or do you just prefer to like do energy drinks or whatever?

[00:25:47] [SPEAKER_17]: We drink infrequently.

[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Infrequently so, okay.

[00:25:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:25:52] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, I try to drink infrequently.

[00:25:55] [SPEAKER_03]: But tonight I am drinking a beer stomp and I'm back to my Fiddlehead IPAs.

[00:25:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh.

[00:25:59] [SPEAKER_03]: So.

[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Good stuff.

[00:26:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:26:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Interesting.

[00:26:03] [SPEAKER_05]: I still find that beer a little odd tasting.

[00:26:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Um, I got an iced coffee.

[00:26:09] [SPEAKER_05]: It's sort of empty.

[00:26:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:26:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Sorry.

[00:26:12] [SPEAKER_05]: It's a sad iced coffee.

[00:26:13] [SPEAKER_03]: So, all right, the beer, the beer segment is just kind of sad tonight.

[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_03]: We've got a Fiddlehead that stomp doesn't like.

[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_03]: You've got a remnant of an iced coffee and then, um, you know, that's, that's all we got folks.

[00:26:26] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, but we want to get right into the recent hikes cause we've been out here and, um, we've got a lot of terrifying 25 trails.

[00:26:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I got a little bit of history that I want to, I want to cover here, stomp.

[00:26:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, but I think just to start off with Brad and Celine, have you got, you guys have, you, are you hiking the T25s right now?

[00:26:41] [SPEAKER_03]: The terrifying 25s?

[00:26:43] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I think we have about nine left of the 25s.

[00:26:45] [SPEAKER_03]: You got about nine left.

[00:26:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:26:47] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[00:26:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Have you been in the great Gulf at all?

[00:26:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Have you been doing any of these, uh, six husbands, spinks, anything like that?

[00:26:52] [SPEAKER_17]: Haven't done those yet.

[00:26:54] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[00:26:55] [SPEAKER_03]: So this will be helpful for you to start planning because first of all, you don't want to listen to what stomp's going to do.

[00:27:00] [SPEAKER_03]: You don't want to mirror what he's doing cause he did like a crazy hike.

[00:27:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, but a little bit about the great Gulf for people that may not be aware.

[00:27:08] [SPEAKER_12]: Let's dive into some white mountains history, shall we?

[00:27:20] [SPEAKER_03]: The great Gulf is a wilderness section and it's, it basically sits between Mount Adams and, um, Mount Jefferson and Mount Washington.

[00:27:31] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's, it was generally unexploited.

[00:27:35] [SPEAKER_03]: There wasn't a lot of people getting in there.

[00:27:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, back in the 1800s, there was a few trails I think that had existed, but really there was a gentleman by the name of Warren Hart in the early 1900s.

[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_03]: His role was AMC counselor of improvements.

[00:27:52] [SPEAKER_03]: So Warren Hart was one of the early trail builders along with a guy by the name of Raymer, Rayner Edmonds.

[00:27:59] [SPEAKER_03]: So, uh, the Edmonds path is well known to people because it's the path that, um, you can ascend to get up to Mount Eisenhower.

[00:28:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Back in the day, I think they called Eisenhower Pleasant Mountain, but, um, Edmonds and Hart.

[00:28:14] [SPEAKER_03]: And there was another guy by the name of Cooks.

[00:28:16] [SPEAKER_03]: I think that was involved in this.

[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_03]: They had two competing philosophies on trail building back then.

[00:28:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Edmonds was of the idea that you should have trails that had gentler slopes.

[00:28:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, he wasn't necessarily doing switchbacks at the time, but he would look for more gentle approaches.

[00:28:32] [SPEAKER_03]: So the Edmonds path is one of those trails where, um, it's not as crazy steep.

[00:28:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, but, and then he was involved in a fair amount of other trails, but the, the, the Cook and Warren Hart side of the trail builders, they were all involved in AMC.

[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_03]: The, um, actually Edmonds was the, um, the first president of AMC, but they had slightly different philosophies on how they would build trails.

[00:28:57] [SPEAKER_03]: So Warren Hart was very much like, I want to build trails that are the most adventurous and challenging trails.

[00:29:03] [SPEAKER_03]: So the great Gulf really called to him.

[00:29:05] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, by 1908, he had been named the AMC counselor of improvements.

[00:29:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Now, previously I had talked about like the, the trail, the old men trail builders of the 1920s that had connected a lot of the sections of the white mountains.

[00:29:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, but this, this was the generation before them where they were still sort of building out the trail.

[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_03]: So Warren Hart was, was the AMC counselor of improvements and he came into the role with big aspirations and he set his sights within the, the, the great Gulf.

[00:29:37] [SPEAKER_03]: In the great Gulf, there's like seven major trails, maybe eight major trails.

[00:29:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Warren Hart built the majority of those trails, six husbands, uh, Wamsuda, the Madison Gulf trail, Spinkstra.

[00:29:53] [SPEAKER_03]: He built all of those in a period of three summers, um, with an AMC trail crew.

[00:29:59] [SPEAKER_03]: And they've mostly have stayed in the similar path that they're at now since the 19, um, the early 1900s.

[00:30:08] [SPEAKER_03]: And this is really right before the weeks act and before the national forest got designated and the funding was there.

[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_03]: This, these guys were just basically building these trails off the funding that they got through, uh, through the AMC.

[00:30:21] [SPEAKER_03]: But it's really amazing to think that he was able to build all those trails over the course of three summers.

[00:30:26] [SPEAKER_03]: And now, um, the majority of these trails are part of that terrifying 25 list because the, the, the philosophy that Hart used was to go up the most challenging and, in steepest areas of the mountain.

[00:30:39] [SPEAKER_03]: And you really don't have much of a choice when you're talking about the great Gulf, but pretty interesting to think that he built all of those trails in, in that amount of time.

[00:30:48] [SPEAKER_03]: And Stump, the interesting thing too about Hart is the original six husbands trail that we're going to talk about.

[00:30:55] [SPEAKER_03]: That originally started at the top of Tuckerman, cut across the Alpine garden, went down, I think, Wamsuda across the, the auto road down Wamsuda,

[00:31:08] [SPEAKER_03]: connected to, I think, Madison Gulf and then up to the top of Jefferson's arm.

[00:31:15] [SPEAKER_03]: So now the six husbands, as we think about it, is simply the bottom of Jefferson's arm up to the summit of Jefferson's.

[00:31:21] [SPEAKER_03]: But before it, um, it was actually a longer trail that came all the way from Tuckerman Ravine.

[00:31:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that's really interesting.

[00:31:29] [SPEAKER_15]: This buildup takes longer than it takes to hike the terrifying 25.

[00:31:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh boy.

[00:31:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I want to know who's running that.

[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_03]: So anyway, uh, sorry, Aurora.

[00:31:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, but Stump, why don't you start off with your crazy hike and I'll talk about the Adam slide afterwards.

[00:31:48] [SPEAKER_05]: All right.

[00:31:48] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, this is, this is wild.

[00:31:50] [SPEAKER_05]: Uh, so Mark Knobby, Knobby hikes, as people know him, um, wanted to finish his T25.

[00:31:57] [SPEAKER_05]: And that would entail doing, uh, some combination of Madison Gulf Trail, uh, the six husbands trail, and then the Sphinx trail.

[00:32:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Um, you know, we had considered doing up over caps and then some weird convoluted, uh, variations.

[00:32:13] [SPEAKER_05]: But we decided upon, um, going up, uh, Madison Gulf Trail, down buttress trail, up six husbands trail, and hitting, you know, Jefferson, then back down Sphinx and then out.

[00:32:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Um, which we did that day.

[00:32:28] [SPEAKER_05]: It was last, uh, Saturday.

[00:32:30] [SPEAKER_05]: So it was, um, 17 miles, nine hours.

[00:32:33] [SPEAKER_05]: Um, pretty intense day.

[00:32:34] [SPEAKER_05]: It was, it was pretty grueling.

[00:32:36] [SPEAKER_05]: The weather was, um, a little bit forgiving up top, you know, 50 degrees.

[00:32:41] [SPEAKER_05]: But on the Lee Gulf side, it was hot, hot, hot.

[00:32:45] [SPEAKER_05]: And, uh, it was a heck of a day.

[00:32:47] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, going up Madison Gulf, very few bugs.

[00:32:50] [SPEAKER_05]: We saw one person on the way up.

[00:32:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Uh, the scrambles were dry, which is great.

[00:32:56] [SPEAKER_05]: But, um, you know, before, before I even left, uh, my biggest mistake on this trip was wearing trail runners because, uh, I wore my Solomons for the day.

[00:33:05] [SPEAKER_05]: And I felt like I was walking on every, I could feel everything through my trail runners.

[00:33:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Every rock, every root.

[00:33:11] [SPEAKER_05]: And it was really, really fatiguing because I'm not used to wearing anything lighter than, say, a, a medium or a heavy leather boot.

[00:33:19] [SPEAKER_05]: So that was my big mistake.

[00:33:21] [SPEAKER_05]: By the end of it, I was really in, uh, suffer mode for sure.

[00:33:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Um, when we were heading up Six Husbands, that was absolutely amazing.

[00:33:30] [SPEAKER_05]: Coming down from Buttress, seeing what we had to do next was really, uh, pretty amazing.

[00:33:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Um, but my, my quad started cramping up a little bit and I was, I thought I was hydrated.

[00:33:42] [SPEAKER_05]: So I couldn't quite figure out what was going on.

[00:33:44] [SPEAKER_05]: It was my sartorius muscles, which are the, the inner quads, the inner thigh.

[00:33:49] [SPEAKER_05]: When we got to the top where that two mile stretch lays out before you from the top of Six Husbands over to Jefferson, um, I was, I was at a crawl.

[00:33:59] [SPEAKER_05]: It was just unbelievable.

[00:34:01] [SPEAKER_05]: I was like every step I had to really walk the fine line between, uh, a normal gate and a cramp.

[00:34:06] [SPEAKER_05]: So I didn't know what was going on with that.

[00:34:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Thank God we got to, uh, Jefferson and then, uh, started making our way down.

[00:34:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Had a wonderful time.

[00:34:14] [SPEAKER_05]: I think Monticello at the, uh, southern base of Jefferson is one of my favorite locations.

[00:34:19] [SPEAKER_05]: It, you know, obviously it wasn't springtime, but that is such a beautiful field of wildflowers in the spring.

[00:34:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Um, we continued on beyond there and for some reason, my recollection of going down Sphinx was that it was on the other side of Clay.

[00:34:34] [SPEAKER_05]: So we're looking at Clay going, oh my God, we still have like another mile.

[00:34:38] [SPEAKER_05]: And sure enough, we hit the actual sign for Sphinx and we're just so relieved because it was so much sooner than we had anticipated.

[00:34:48] [SPEAKER_05]: Uh, made our way down Sphinx.

[00:34:49] [SPEAKER_05]: No, no problem.

[00:34:51] [SPEAKER_05]: It was super wet, super slippery.

[00:34:52] [SPEAKER_05]: Lost our direction a couple of times, uh, coming down that just above a section with a lot of, uh, like waterfalls and whatnot.

[00:35:01] [SPEAKER_05]: So that, that trail's a little confusing.

[00:35:02] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:35:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:35:03] [SPEAKER_03]: The thing about Sphinx for sure is that, um, it goes, it, it, it goes back and forth across a drainage and there's a couple of like bootleg, um, rock markings on those, those crossings, but you can miss them.

[00:35:16] [SPEAKER_03]: And I think there's one that if you miss that crossing, you cliff out and you can't, you can't really go anywhere.

[00:35:21] [SPEAKER_03]: So you have to climb back up.

[00:35:24] [SPEAKER_05]: That's right.

[00:35:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:35:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Um, let's see what else here.

[00:35:28] [SPEAKER_15]: Wow.

[00:35:28] [SPEAKER_15]: Wow.

[00:35:32] [SPEAKER_15]: Greatest hiker in history.

[00:35:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, stop it.

[00:35:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Stop it, Aurora.

[00:35:36] [SPEAKER_05]: I appreciate it.

[00:35:38] [SPEAKER_05]: Uh, so that's all I got.

[00:35:39] [SPEAKER_05]: I feel like Aurora's being nice to you and mean to me.

[00:35:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, that's not the case.

[00:35:44] [SPEAKER_05]: It's just, it's just, well, it's intelligent, I guess.

[00:35:51] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[00:35:52] [SPEAKER_03]: And then what did you think about coming down?

[00:35:53] [SPEAKER_03]: So you come down Sphinx, did you stop by Spalding Pond?

[00:35:56] [SPEAKER_15]: You said you do not like me.

[00:35:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, that's true.

[00:35:59] [SPEAKER_03]: That's true.

[00:36:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Um, did you go by Spalding Pond on the way?

[00:36:03] [SPEAKER_05]: No, we were, uh, below Spalding.

[00:36:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay.

[00:36:07] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:36:08] [SPEAKER_05]: So Spalding is much further past Sphinx, right?

[00:36:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I think so.

[00:36:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:36:14] [SPEAKER_05]: And all day long.

[00:36:14] [SPEAKER_03]: You have to go out to the intersection of Great Gulf and then go back up Great Gulf to get there,

[00:36:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I guess.

[00:36:19] [SPEAKER_05]: It's funny that you said that too, because all day long, I was trying to think of the name

[00:36:23] [SPEAKER_05]: of that damn pond and I couldn't remember it all day long.

[00:36:27] [SPEAKER_05]: And I knew it was something sort of cool like that, like Spalding.

[00:36:30] [SPEAKER_05]: But yeah.

[00:36:31] [SPEAKER_05]: So good trip.

[00:36:32] [SPEAKER_05]: Congrats to Nobby.

[00:36:33] [SPEAKER_05]: Um, that was a hard day.

[00:36:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Yep.

[00:36:36] [SPEAKER_03]: So Nobby's finished up, um, with his terrifying 25.

[00:36:39] [SPEAKER_03]: So congrats.

[00:36:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, and I was, the next day I went over to the same area.

[00:36:45] [SPEAKER_03]: So essentially what I did was I met up with Jakester and then, um, our friend James.

[00:36:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Luckily, this hike I'm going to talk about, like, I think that this is one of those ones

[00:36:54] [SPEAKER_03]: where I wouldn't do it unless I went with somebody that had previously done it.

[00:36:58] [SPEAKER_14]: Boring.

[00:37:00] [SPEAKER_14]: Boring.

[00:37:01] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm getting really thrown.

[00:37:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Boring.

[00:37:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Aurora's really throwing me off my game here.

[00:37:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, so I would not do this with a, um, once I figure out who Aurora is, there's going to be

[00:37:12] [SPEAKER_03]: a fight by the way.

[00:37:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, but I wouldn't do this with someone unless they've done it before, just because it's

[00:37:17] [SPEAKER_03]: really like tricky on the, when you get above tree line.

[00:37:20] [SPEAKER_03]: But essentially this, this trail is called the Adam slide trail and it extends beyond

[00:37:25] [SPEAKER_03]: the buttress trail.

[00:37:27] [SPEAKER_03]: So you essentially go to the buttress trail instead of going to the right at the bottom

[00:37:30] [SPEAKER_03]: of it by the, uh, by the tent sites, you go straight up this, this slide that is like

[00:37:37] [SPEAKER_03]: incredibly steep.

[00:37:37] [SPEAKER_03]: It's got to be like 45 degree, 50 degree angle that you're climbing up.

[00:37:42] [SPEAKER_03]: It's, it's supposedly the steepest trail in the white mountains.

[00:37:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Like it's the steepest mile, I think one point, one and a quarter miles, it's like 2,500 feet

[00:37:53] [SPEAKER_03]: of elevation gain or something.

[00:37:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:37:55] [SPEAKER_03]: So it was crazy.

[00:37:56] [SPEAKER_03]: And the thing is you're in the, you're in the woods and you're like looking up and there's

[00:38:01] [SPEAKER_03]: a bunch of these giant boulders and I'm thinking to myself the whole time, it's a

[00:38:04] [SPEAKER_03]: funnel.

[00:38:05] [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm thinking like if one of these boulders lets loose, like it's game over time.

[00:38:09] [SPEAKER_03]: That's what I'm thinking too.

[00:38:10] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, surprisingly that talus field at the base of buttress where you would go up.

[00:38:15] [SPEAKER_05]: But it's fairly inactive.

[00:38:18] [SPEAKER_05]: It seems settled.

[00:38:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:38:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:38:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Which is surprising.

[00:38:21] [SPEAKER_03]: A lot of that stuff was pretty locked in.

[00:38:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:38:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh yeah.

[00:38:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I think most of that stuff's locked in, but, um, it's just unsettling because you're thinking

[00:38:27] [SPEAKER_03]: like, oh, what goes on above could, could really, um, it could take you out.

[00:38:32] [SPEAKER_03]: There's huge boulders that are just sort of sitting there, but the trail's pretty obvious.

[00:38:36] [SPEAKER_03]: It's an old trail.

[00:38:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I think it was shut down in the 1970s.

[00:38:39] [SPEAKER_03]: So you, you go up and then eventually you get above tree line at like 4,300 feet.

[00:38:44] [SPEAKER_03]: And that's where it gets ugly because you've got to cut through the scrub and the trees

[00:38:48] [SPEAKER_03]: are like about my height.

[00:38:50] [SPEAKER_03]: And so then they're too, they're too tall to step on.

[00:38:53] [SPEAKER_03]: And so you have to kind of bust through them.

[00:38:55] [SPEAKER_03]: And there is, there isn't, there is like a treadway where you can kind of go through,

[00:39:00] [SPEAKER_03]: but it's still like you're getting torn up.

[00:39:02] [SPEAKER_03]: And then eventually you get to, uh, you get above tree line and you're just jumping from

[00:39:06] [SPEAKER_03]: one rock field to another.

[00:39:07] [SPEAKER_03]: But I sort of felt the same way you did about my trail runners.

[00:39:10] [SPEAKER_03]: It was like killing my feet that being on those giant boulders.

[00:39:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh yeah.

[00:39:14] [SPEAKER_03]: It hurt.

[00:39:15] [SPEAKER_05]: It's, it's a workout for sure.

[00:39:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:39:18] [SPEAKER_03]: But that was probably the top, one of the toughest hikes I've gone on for sure.

[00:39:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, but I would not, like I said, I wouldn't do this one.

[00:39:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Don't listen to me and be like, Oh, I'm going to try this one.

[00:39:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Like talk to somebody that's done it before because it's tricky.

[00:39:29] [SPEAKER_03]: You can get lost up there and you'll be, you'll be in big trouble.

[00:39:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Redline guiding actually offers a trip to go up there if you wanted to do it with them.

[00:39:37] [SPEAKER_03]: So call, call Mike Cherum or, um, reach out to us.

[00:39:41] [SPEAKER_03]: The actual slide.

[00:39:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:39:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:39:44] [SPEAKER_03]: They'll offer, they offer taking a trip up there.

[00:39:46] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, it's, it's an interesting hike.

[00:39:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I liked it, but it's just, I hesitate to like advertise it too much here without warning people

[00:39:55] [SPEAKER_03]: like, don't do this thing on your own.

[00:39:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Make sure you go with someone that's been there, done that.

[00:39:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Cause it's tricky.

[00:40:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:40:01] [SPEAKER_03]: No doubt about it.

[00:40:04] [SPEAKER_15]: Interesting.

[00:40:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:40:06] [SPEAKER_03]: So interesting.

[00:40:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you.

[00:40:09] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, so stomp that's, that's basically the Adam side.

[00:40:15] [SPEAKER_03]: So that essentially covers like seven of the nine trails, I think that encompass the great

[00:40:19] [SPEAKER_03]: gulf.

[00:40:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:40:20] [SPEAKER_05]: So what's left?

[00:40:21] [SPEAKER_05]: So you have Chandler, what, what, what?

[00:40:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Chandler Brook.

[00:40:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:40:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Wasumpta.

[00:40:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Is that what it's called?

[00:40:28] [SPEAKER_05]: Wamasuta.

[00:40:28] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:40:29] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay.

[00:40:29] [SPEAKER_05]: And then the great gulf.

[00:40:30] [SPEAKER_05]: Great gulf.

[00:40:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Right.

[00:40:31] [SPEAKER_05]: I want to go back in and finish those three before the season's over.

[00:40:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:40:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:40:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Now, Brad and Slim, when you get over in that area, are you going to backpack it or are you

[00:40:39] [SPEAKER_03]: going to try to do day hikes around there?

[00:40:41] [SPEAKER_17]: I think probably day hikes.

[00:40:43] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, we also are working on the 52.

[00:40:46] [SPEAKER_17]: So a lot of those are like way up North.

[00:40:47] [SPEAKER_17]: So we'll probably be staying in campgrounds and hitting some of them.

[00:40:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:40:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:40:52] [SPEAKER_03]: It is tricky.

[00:40:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Like when I was doing the terrifying 25, I actually had to break up the great gulf.

[00:40:57] [SPEAKER_03]: I did it in like, I touched three different parts of the great gulf when I did.

[00:41:01] [SPEAKER_03]: I did one day, I just did Madison golf and I touched a little bit of the great gulf trail

[00:41:06] [SPEAKER_03]: and then, yeah, six husband spinks in, in the actual great gulf head wall.

[00:41:13] [SPEAKER_03]: No matter what you do, those are going to be long days.

[00:41:15] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's probably why they're like towards the end of your list, right?

[00:41:19] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:41:20] Right.

[00:41:21] [SPEAKER_03]: So, all right.

[00:41:23] [SPEAKER_03]: So stop moving on.

[00:41:24] [SPEAKER_03]: This is the part of the show where we talk about, um, a sponsor that you really need

[00:41:28] [SPEAKER_03]: because you're so sweaty.

[00:41:29] [SPEAKER_05]: No kidding.

[00:41:30] [SPEAKER_05]: Right.

[00:41:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh my goodness.

[00:41:32] [SPEAKER_05]: All right.

[00:41:33] [SPEAKER_05]: So does your backpack not provide enough ventilation?

[00:41:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Does your back sweat too much when backpacking?

[00:41:39] [SPEAKER_05]: As you know, sweat can be extremely uncomfortable on the trails.

[00:41:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Plus sweat is a serious risk factor in both hot and cold climates.

[00:41:47] [SPEAKER_05]: As your clothes get wet, your core temperature can dramatically fluctuate.

[00:41:50] [SPEAKER_05]: This can result in hypothermia, heat exhaustion, and dehydration.

[00:41:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Let's not forget, just very uncomfortable.

[00:41:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Today's your lucky day because we have a good solution and good news for you.

[00:42:02] [SPEAKER_05]: There's a piece of gear that solves the sweat and ventilation problem, making your backpack more comfortable.

[00:42:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Vocalus Gear's Ultralight Backpack Ventilation Frame.

[00:42:12] [SPEAKER_05]: This ultralight frame is a backpack accessory that easily installs in your favorite pack, sizes 15 liters to 45 liters.

[00:42:20] [SPEAKER_05]: And creates a ventilating airflow gap between you and your pack.

[00:42:24] [SPEAKER_05]: It's also ultralight, weighing around 3 ounces.

[00:42:28] [SPEAKER_05]: And that's equivalent to a pair of wool socks.

[00:42:30] [SPEAKER_05]: So whether hiking in hot or cold temps,

[00:42:33] [SPEAKER_05]: the ultralight backpack ventilation frame from Vocalus Gear is a real game changer regarding airflow and ventilation.

[00:42:39] [SPEAKER_05]: Visit vocalusgear.com to order an ultralight ventilation frame today.

[00:42:45] [SPEAKER_05]: Use promo code SLASHER.

[00:42:46] [SPEAKER_15]: Can you wear it in the studio?

[00:42:49] [SPEAKER_15]: In the front.

[00:42:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that's probably a good idea, Aurora.

[00:42:56] [SPEAKER_05]: So, well, first of all, I shouldn't be wearing cotton.

[00:42:59] [SPEAKER_05]: This is a great example of what cotton does.

[00:43:01] [SPEAKER_05]: It never leaves your body.

[00:43:04] [SPEAKER_05]: Never wear cotton when you're hiking, people.

[00:43:06] [SPEAKER_05]: So back to this.

[00:43:07] [SPEAKER_05]: So we have a $5 discount.

[00:43:10] [SPEAKER_05]: You just have to go to the website and type in SLASHER for the $5 and let them know that Mike and Stomp sent you.

[00:43:22] [SPEAKER_12]: It's time for SLASHER's notable hike of the week.

[00:43:25] [SPEAKER_12]: If you want to be considered for the hike of the week, simply tag SLASHER on your social media post.

[00:43:35] [SPEAKER_03]: All right, Stomp.

[00:43:36] [SPEAKER_03]: So this is the part of the show where we do notable hikes.

[00:43:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[00:43:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I've narrowed the suspect list on who's behind Aurora down to like one person, by the way.

[00:43:44] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay, so here's the deal.

[00:43:45] [SPEAKER_05]: I thought that this would be a good idea because you and I have to recuse ourselves from this list because we're part of the list this time around.

[00:43:53] [SPEAKER_05]: So we have a special guest to join us to make that final call perhaps.

[00:43:57] [SPEAKER_05]: We'll see.

[00:43:58] [SPEAKER_05]: But I don't know.

[00:44:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Are you there, mystery guest?

[00:44:02] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes.

[00:44:02] [SPEAKER_05]: I would like to remain anonymous.

[00:44:06] [SPEAKER_03]: It's Dave.

[00:44:10] [SPEAKER_05]: Can you guess who this is?

[00:44:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm guessing Dave shit's in the woods, no doubt about it.

[00:44:15] [SPEAKER_06]: Wouldn't he be in the woods doing the verb you speak of?

[00:44:21] [SPEAKER_05]: It's him.

[00:44:23] [SPEAKER_05]: All right.

[00:44:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Well, I guess do you want to ask any questions to figure this out for sure or is it definitely him?

[00:44:30] [SPEAKER_03]: It's him.

[00:44:31] [SPEAKER_03]: That's my final answer.

[00:44:33] [SPEAKER_05]: Final answer?

[00:44:34] [SPEAKER_05]: All right.

[00:44:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Ready?

[00:44:35] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm going to reveal him.

[00:44:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Ready?

[00:44:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Here he goes.

[00:44:36] [SPEAKER_07]: Someone put rocks in his bag.

[00:44:42] [SPEAKER_02]: I knew it was him.

[00:44:44] [SPEAKER_02]: I knew it was him.

[00:44:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Have you guys heard of Dave shit's in the woods?

[00:44:47] [SPEAKER_17]: I've heard about him, yeah.

[00:44:48] [SPEAKER_02]: You have, yeah.

[00:44:49] [SPEAKER_02]: I knew he was over there.

[00:44:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:44:51] [SPEAKER_05]: So that was our robot disguise voice.

[00:44:53] [SPEAKER_05]: But this is him back to normal.

[00:44:55] [SPEAKER_06]: That didn't last long at all, did it?

[00:44:57] [SPEAKER_06]: No.

[00:44:58] [SPEAKER_06]: So you didn't get nice and close.

[00:44:59] [SPEAKER_06]: You're the guy that ruins magic tricks, aren't you, Mike?

[00:45:02] [SPEAKER_06]: I know.

[00:45:03] [SPEAKER_06]: That's done.

[00:45:03] [SPEAKER_06]: I am.

[00:45:05] [SPEAKER_06]: Hey, kids, look.

[00:45:07] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[00:45:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Not bad.

[00:45:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Not bad.

[00:45:09] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[00:45:09] [SPEAKER_03]: It was a good time.

[00:45:10] [SPEAKER_03]: We'll polish it up, Dave.

[00:45:11] [SPEAKER_03]: We'll get there.

[00:45:12] [SPEAKER_03]: But we're going on to notable hike of the week.

[00:45:14] [SPEAKER_03]: So one thing I can guarantee you is that Dave is not getting notable hike of the week.

[00:45:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Shocker.

[00:45:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, you have to go on vacation for that.

[00:45:22] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, right?

[00:45:24] [SPEAKER_03]: True, true.

[00:45:25] [SPEAKER_03]: So you want to start this stuff?

[00:45:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, let's go.

[00:45:28] [SPEAKER_05]: So let's see.

[00:45:28] [SPEAKER_05]: We have a bunch here.

[00:45:30] [SPEAKER_05]: So this is a really great list this week.

[00:45:32] [SPEAKER_05]: So we have Cindy Chess.

[00:45:33] [SPEAKER_05]: She completed the Belknap 12 on July 14th.

[00:45:39] [SPEAKER_05]: Mike Devaya did Mount Roberts.

[00:45:41] [SPEAKER_05]: PC Hiker hiked the Z-Bonds Traverse.

[00:45:45] [SPEAKER_05]: James Phoenix.

[00:45:46] [SPEAKER_05]: This is a monster hike here.

[00:45:48] [SPEAKER_05]: Very similar to what we did over the weekend here.

[00:45:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Great Gulf to Madison Gulf, over Mount Madison, down Osgood Trail, and back Madison Gulf Trail,

[00:45:59] [SPEAKER_05]: then to the Auto Road.

[00:46:00] [SPEAKER_05]: That's a big day.

[00:46:03] [SPEAKER_05]: Kinesthetically, a werewolf hiked the Wildcat Mariah Trail, then Cabot to finish the...

[00:46:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Wait a minute.

[00:46:10] [SPEAKER_05]: To finish 43.

[00:46:11] [SPEAKER_05]: He's on 43 or 48, Scott.

[00:46:13] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that's right.

[00:46:13] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay.

[00:46:14] [SPEAKER_05]: Jude hikes the Whites.

[00:46:16] [SPEAKER_05]: Middle Sister.

[00:46:17] [SPEAKER_05]: And then we have Linda, Steve Tupper, and Jeff Line, who did Mount Washington for Seek

[00:46:22] [SPEAKER_05]: the Peak.

[00:46:24] [SPEAKER_05]: That friggin' hiker hiked Mount Jefferson.

[00:46:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Liz Faye was up on Turtleback Mountain and Bald Knob in the Ossipies.

[00:46:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Dave, did you do that with her?

[00:46:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Or was she solo?

[00:46:35] [SPEAKER_06]: Solo.

[00:46:36] [SPEAKER_03]: With Turtleback Mountain, I've never heard of that.

[00:46:41] [SPEAKER_06]: It is...

[00:46:42] [SPEAKER_06]: It is...

[00:46:43] [SPEAKER_06]: It's in the Ossipie area?

[00:46:44] [SPEAKER_06]: Ossipies?

[00:46:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Ossipies?

[00:46:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm guessing.

[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_06]: I'll look it up.

[00:46:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll do some research on that one.

[00:46:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:46:51] [SPEAKER_05]: That's...

[00:46:52] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I said that, so it was in the Ossipies.

[00:46:54] [SPEAKER_05]: And then our friend Stosh did a self-bound multi-day prezzy.

[00:46:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Amy Gramlin hiked Mariah to finish her 48.

[00:47:04] [SPEAKER_05]: Congratulations.

[00:47:06] [SPEAKER_05]: R. Playford hiked Carter Dome for 48 peaks.

[00:47:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Let's see.

[00:47:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Patrick Smart 603 hiked Noon Jennings and Sandwich for 11 out of 52 with a view.

[00:47:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Marley Sue 2 hiked Mount Pogus for 27 out of the 52 with a view.

[00:47:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Coco Gorm hiked Huntington Ravine.

[00:47:28] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, by the way, Huntington Ravine compared to Six Husbands.

[00:47:33] [SPEAKER_05]: What's worse?

[00:47:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Because I've yet to do Huntington's.

[00:47:40] [SPEAKER_03]: That's a good question.

[00:47:41] [SPEAKER_03]: I feel like Huntington is a little bit easier, in my opinion, just because when you get above

[00:47:49] [SPEAKER_03]: the head wall, you've got that reprieve of the alpine garden and you're sort of flat for

[00:47:54] [SPEAKER_03]: a little while.

[00:47:55] [SPEAKER_03]: But when you get above Six Husbands, the climb on the arm and then up to Jefferson's just continues

[00:48:02] [SPEAKER_03]: on.

[00:48:03] [SPEAKER_03]: So for me, it's just a longer time that you're going up and you don't get any break.

[00:48:08] [SPEAKER_03]: At least with Huntington, you get a break.

[00:48:11] [SPEAKER_03]: It's not as...

[00:48:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Plus, you're wide open and the views are constant on Huntington.

[00:48:17] [SPEAKER_03]: And I think that the views aren't as constant on Six Husbands, maybe.

[00:48:21] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay.

[00:48:21] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[00:48:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, I...

[00:48:23] [SPEAKER_03]: So for me, psychologically, I just feel like Huntington, I'm always pumped to be on Six Husbands.

[00:48:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, oh, well.

[00:48:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah.

[00:48:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Am I going to fall off this ladder and break my head?

[00:48:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:48:31] [SPEAKER_05]: They were exposed, man.

[00:48:33] [SPEAKER_05]: So exposed.

[00:48:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Mm-hmm.

[00:48:35] [SPEAKER_05]: All right.

[00:48:35] [SPEAKER_05]: A couple more here.

[00:48:36] [SPEAKER_05]: So hiking feeds my soul.

[00:48:38] [SPEAKER_05]: Rogers Ledge for 39 out of 52 of the view.

[00:48:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Folk Star did Handy's Peak.

[00:48:44] [SPEAKER_05]: Or is that Handles?

[00:48:45] [SPEAKER_05]: No, Handy's Peak.

[00:48:46] [SPEAKER_05]: And then this is the father-daughter duo here, Margaret and Spence.

[00:48:52] [SPEAKER_05]: So they hiked Mount Washington via the Great Gulf Wamsuda Trail to Alpine Garden and then

[00:48:59] [SPEAKER_05]: to Tux.

[00:49:00] [SPEAKER_05]: And then basically Wamsuda completed the White Mountain National Guide 31st Edition Red Line

[00:49:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Project for Spence, Margaret's dad.

[00:49:10] [SPEAKER_03]: So Spence did the 31st Edition White Mountain Guidebook.

[00:49:14] [SPEAKER_03]: He completed it.

[00:49:15] [SPEAKER_03]: So that's impressive.

[00:49:15] [SPEAKER_05]: Huge.

[00:49:16] [SPEAKER_05]: Huge.

[00:49:16] [SPEAKER_05]: Then, of course, we have Jakester, your partner in crime for the Adams Slide.

[00:49:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Corey Outdoors did – I've never heard of this, and this is intense too.

[00:49:27] [SPEAKER_05]: So he did a Randbar, which is basically Randolph to Bartlett Traverse.

[00:49:33] [SPEAKER_05]: And essentially you're talking about going up Castle Trail to Isolation, to Stairs, and then

[00:49:39] [SPEAKER_05]: to Park or Mount Parker, way down in Bartlett.

[00:49:42] [SPEAKER_05]: That's a heck of a trip.

[00:49:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, that makes sense.

[00:49:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:49:47] [SPEAKER_05]: So it's from the town of Randolph to Bartlett.

[00:49:50] [SPEAKER_03]: It's sort of like a piece of the Cohoss Trail, I think.

[00:49:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:49:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe not.

[00:49:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.

[00:49:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:49:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Could be wrong about that.

[00:49:56] [SPEAKER_05]: I think so.

[00:49:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Maybe to a point.

[00:49:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:49:59] [SPEAKER_05]: And then last but not least, Nobby did the T25.

[00:50:01] [SPEAKER_05]: So that's our list.

[00:50:03] [SPEAKER_05]: And yeah.

[00:50:05] [SPEAKER_05]: What do you guys think?

[00:50:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Maybe we can get a consensus here as who gets this.

[00:50:10] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm recusing myself.

[00:50:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:50:13] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I vote Spence number one for doing the White Mountain Guidebook and completing

[00:50:19] [SPEAKER_03]: all the trails.

[00:50:23] [SPEAKER_06]: I think that's monumental.

[00:50:25] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, that's a big one.

[00:50:26] [SPEAKER_06]: I think the Randbar is fascinating.

[00:50:28] [SPEAKER_06]: I think that's different.

[00:50:29] [SPEAKER_06]: And I think that's – I like that it's different.

[00:50:31] [SPEAKER_06]: But to do the entire guide, the red line, that's huge.

[00:50:35] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:50:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:50:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it is.

[00:50:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I think I would give a special shout-out to Amy Gramblin for finishing her 4,000 footers.

[00:50:44] [SPEAKER_03]: And then also Stosh got three good weather days when he was doing his Prezi Traverse.

[00:50:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Because he came back.

[00:50:50] [SPEAKER_03]: So this is our friend from down in New York.

[00:50:53] [SPEAKER_03]: So he – in the Catskills.

[00:50:55] [SPEAKER_03]: So he had come last year and gotten really lousy, rainy weather.

[00:50:58] [SPEAKER_03]: So this was absolutely a payback for that.

[00:51:01] [SPEAKER_03]: So congratulations to all of them.

[00:51:04] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:51:04] [SPEAKER_05]: And I think I'm going to agree with that.

[00:51:07] [SPEAKER_05]: Definitely Spence and Margaret for sure.

[00:51:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay.

[00:51:12] [SPEAKER_05]: How about you two, Cillin?

[00:51:13] [SPEAKER_15]: Stomp the creator wins.

[00:51:19] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, never mind.

[00:51:20] [SPEAKER_06]: I guess I won.

[00:51:21] [SPEAKER_06]: You can't argue with AI.

[00:51:23] [SPEAKER_06]: That's true.

[00:51:25] [SPEAKER_06]: Look what happened in Terminator.

[00:51:28] [SPEAKER_06]: True.

[00:51:31] [SPEAKER_05]: True.

[00:51:32] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, boy.

[00:51:49] [SPEAKER_12]: It's time for Slasher's Guest of the Week.

[00:51:53] [SPEAKER_12]: Very cool.

[00:51:54] [SPEAKER_12]: Very cool.

[00:52:04] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[00:52:05] [SPEAKER_03]: So Cillin, Brad, this is your moment.

[00:52:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Are you ready for your big segment?

[00:52:09] [SPEAKER_07]: I think so.

[00:52:10] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[00:52:11] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[00:52:12] [SPEAKER_03]: So let's start off with – so for the listeners here, so you guys run like a social media

[00:52:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Instagram page and you've got your own blog, Wild and Outdoors.

[00:52:23] [SPEAKER_03]: How long have you guys known each other?

[00:52:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Cillin, I guess you can give the background on how you guys met and how long you've been

[00:52:29] [SPEAKER_03]: together.

[00:52:30] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah.

[00:52:31] [SPEAKER_17]: We've been together a little over three and a half years.

[00:52:34] [SPEAKER_17]: Three and a half years.

[00:52:35] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah.

[00:52:35] [SPEAKER_17]: I'm originally from Vermont.

[00:52:37] [SPEAKER_17]: I moved here about three and a half years ago and Brad grew up in New Hampshire.

[00:52:43] [SPEAKER_17]: We actually – so I got sent home from college during the peak of COVID.

[00:52:49] [SPEAKER_17]: So I decided to try online dating and that's how we first met through Facebook dating, which

[00:52:55] [SPEAKER_17]: you know, most people don't know it's a thing.

[00:52:57] [SPEAKER_17]: But I had like a picture of me on Franconia Ridge and he commented on it and recognized

[00:53:05] [SPEAKER_17]: that it was Franconia Ridge.

[00:53:07] [SPEAKER_17]: So I was like, oh, okay.

[00:53:07] [SPEAKER_17]: He like – you know, he knows something about hiking.

[00:53:10] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:53:10] [SPEAKER_17]: He was off.

[00:53:12] [SPEAKER_17]: So then – yeah.

[00:53:16] [SPEAKER_17]: So our first date was hiking Cannon.

[00:53:18] [SPEAKER_17]: He had already been working on the 48 and I had done a couple of them.

[00:53:23] [SPEAKER_17]: And then, yeah, that's kind of how we met each other.

[00:53:26] [SPEAKER_17]: And then we continued working on the 48 together.

[00:53:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:53:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Now, I've been out of the dating game for like – so I've been married to Mrs. Mike for 24

[00:53:34] [SPEAKER_03]: years and then we dated for like six years.

[00:53:36] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's been 30 years for me.

[00:53:37] [SPEAKER_03]: My understanding – listen to the – my daughter's 22 and I've got a 20-year-old daughter and

[00:53:42] [SPEAKER_03]: an 18-year-old daughter.

[00:53:43] [SPEAKER_03]: So my understanding from listening to the young people is that there's a common problem

[00:53:48] [SPEAKER_03]: on dating apps where people will say – one of their activities, they're into hiking.

[00:53:52] [SPEAKER_03]: But most of the time, like 99% of the time, they're not really into hiking like we would

[00:54:00] [SPEAKER_03]: think people are into hiking.

[00:54:01] [SPEAKER_03]: And what ends up happening is like if one person's really into hiking and then the other

[00:54:05] [SPEAKER_03]: one is not into hiking, they end up like killing the other person because they, you know, they're

[00:54:13] [SPEAKER_03]: taking them on these other hikes.

[00:54:14] [SPEAKER_03]: But the person doesn't want to say like they're not that into it.

[00:54:17] [SPEAKER_03]: But it sounds like both of you are hardcore hikers before you even met each other, right?

[00:54:23] [SPEAKER_03]: So was that a different dynamic?

[00:54:25] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah.

[00:54:26] [SPEAKER_17]: I mean, that's what we were both looking for was someone into hiking hardcore.

[00:54:31] [SPEAKER_17]: Okay.

[00:54:31] [SPEAKER_17]: On our first date, it was kind of funny, like neither of us spoke that much because we were

[00:54:36] [SPEAKER_17]: just like hiking so hard to like one prove to one another that we were like a serious

[00:54:41] [SPEAKER_17]: hiker.

[00:54:42] [SPEAKER_17]: And this was in – this was like the week before Christmas.

[00:54:44] [SPEAKER_17]: It was a winter hike.

[00:54:45] [SPEAKER_17]: And then –

[00:54:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:54:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, it was a winter hike?

[00:54:48] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah.

[00:54:49] [SPEAKER_17]: And then second year, kind of like silently judging each other like are they keeping up

[00:54:53] [SPEAKER_17]: okay or how are we doing?

[00:54:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:54:56] [SPEAKER_03]: We were like, oh my God, I can't believe he's using Cthulhu's and not hill sounds.

[00:55:00] [SPEAKER_03]: What a loser.

[00:55:03] [SPEAKER_03]: So, oh, that's interesting.

[00:55:04] [SPEAKER_03]: So you get into winter hiking.

[00:55:06] [SPEAKER_03]: So at least you – I mean – and then you're not talking that much.

[00:55:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Like how many times did you go hiking together before it got like really serious?

[00:55:15] [SPEAKER_04]: So we ended up hiking each weekend.

[00:55:18] [SPEAKER_04]: After that, we did Wambach.

[00:55:19] [SPEAKER_04]: Then we did Field Tom and Wiley.

[00:55:21] [SPEAKER_04]: And then the Carters.

[00:55:23] [SPEAKER_04]: So then five weeks after our first date, I actually made the trip out to Vermont to meet

[00:55:27] [SPEAKER_04]: her family, her parents.

[00:55:29] [SPEAKER_04]: And then we ended up doing Mansfield.

[00:55:31] [SPEAKER_04]: And that ended up being like 50 mile an hour wind with a negative 30 wind chill.

[00:55:36] [SPEAKER_04]: It was horrible weather.

[00:55:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Wow.

[00:55:38] [SPEAKER_04]: It was supposed to be nice, clear, and we were going to do a sunrise hike.

[00:55:41] [SPEAKER_04]: But the weather ended up changing towards the top.

[00:55:43] [SPEAKER_04]: Luckily, we had all the right gear.

[00:55:45] [SPEAKER_04]: So we got a little bit of shelter, put all our layers on, ran up to the summit.

[00:55:49] [SPEAKER_04]: And yelling out over the winds, I said, do you want to be my girl?

[00:55:53] [SPEAKER_04]: And she said yes.

[00:55:54] [SPEAKER_04]: So then we just booked it off the mountain as fast as possible.

[00:55:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Wow.

[00:55:59] [SPEAKER_03]: That's so romantic.

[00:56:01] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm impressed.

[00:56:02] [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm just trying to think back at like when I made it official with my wife, what my

[00:56:07] [SPEAKER_03]: move was.

[00:56:08] [SPEAKER_03]: I can't – I don't think it was that like impressive.

[00:56:09] [SPEAKER_03]: So –

[00:56:11] [SPEAKER_15]: You don't have to be lonely at hikersonly.com.

[00:56:19] [SPEAKER_03]: That's funny.

[00:56:20] [SPEAKER_03]: So why don't you, Celine, why don't you just introduce yourself then and give a little

[00:56:23] [SPEAKER_03]: bit of background.

[00:56:24] [SPEAKER_03]: So obviously you were into outdoor activities, but can you talk a little bit about your like

[00:56:28] [SPEAKER_03]: early life and then how, you know, how you got into hiking in the first place?

[00:56:33] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah.

[00:56:33] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, so yeah, I'm originally from Vermont.

[00:56:36] [SPEAKER_17]: Both of my parents are – they love the outdoors.

[00:56:39] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, I grew up, you know, canoeing, hiking, skiing, um, just spending a lot of time outside.

[00:56:45] [SPEAKER_17]: And my dad was the – he brought me over to the Whites to hike Mount Washington when

[00:56:52] [SPEAKER_17]: I was in high school, I believe.

[00:56:54] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, and that was like my first experience in the Whites and I just absolutely fell in

[00:56:58] [SPEAKER_17]: love with it.

[00:56:59] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, I went to college for communications and I worked in marketing for a few years, um,

[00:57:05] [SPEAKER_17]: until we started our Instagram page and then, um, decided that, you know, we want to move

[00:57:11] [SPEAKER_17]: into an RV full-time to travel the country.

[00:57:13] [SPEAKER_17]: And so now I'm doing social media full-time.

[00:57:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Got it.

[00:57:18] [SPEAKER_03]: And you haven't fully, um, moved into the RV yet.

[00:57:21] [SPEAKER_03]: You've got – that's future plans for you?

[00:57:23] [SPEAKER_17]: Yep.

[00:57:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[00:57:24] [SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, I definitely want to talk about that a little bit.

[00:57:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, and then Brad, your background, why don't you give a little bit of your background too?

[00:57:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[00:57:31] [SPEAKER_04]: So when I was really young, like six or younger, my parents would take me on little hikes like

[00:57:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Pac-Nadnock or Manadnock.

[00:57:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, and then when I was about seven or eight, my stepdad introduced me to skiing.

[00:57:41] [SPEAKER_04]: So that was my first sort of real outdoor sport.

[00:57:44] [SPEAKER_04]: And then it wasn't really until, I'd say probably a little bit older when I was doing the YMCA

[00:57:50] [SPEAKER_04]: summer camps.

[00:57:51] [SPEAKER_04]: That was kind of my introduction to kayaking, hiking, biking, rock climbing.

[00:57:56] [SPEAKER_04]: And then fast forward to college, one of my hometown buddies reached out and said,

[00:58:00] [SPEAKER_04]: hey, let's rock climb three to five days a week all summer long.

[00:58:03] [SPEAKER_04]: I was like, all about it.

[00:58:05] [SPEAKER_04]: So we went to Vertical Dreams here in Manchester.

[00:58:07] [SPEAKER_04]: And then, uh, a couple of years after that, we found out UNH had an outing club because

[00:58:12] [SPEAKER_04]: I went there for my degree.

[00:58:14] [SPEAKER_04]: And my first 4,000 footer was Liberty and I was not prepared at all.

[00:58:19] [SPEAKER_04]: Didn't know what I was doing.

[00:58:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, did not have the right gear.

[00:58:22] [SPEAKER_04]: So that's kind of why we thought doing the Instagram channel would be good to help other

[00:58:26] [SPEAKER_04]: people starting out new.

[00:58:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, wouldn't know what kind of gear to have and what to prepare for, but, uh, graduated

[00:58:33] [SPEAKER_04]: college.

[00:58:34] [SPEAKER_04]: And then another friend reached out and said, Hey, there's this thing called the New Hampshire

[00:58:37] [SPEAKER_04]: 4,000 footer list.

[00:58:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Let's start hiking together.

[00:58:39] [SPEAKER_04]: I said, I'm all in.

[00:58:41] [SPEAKER_04]: And from there, that's just where it all started.

[00:58:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Got it.

[00:58:44] [SPEAKER_03]: And did you, did you go into winter hiking right away or did that take a little bit of time?

[00:58:50] [SPEAKER_04]: Uh, probably took two, three years.

[00:58:52] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't think I really started winter hiking until I actually ended up meeting Celine.

[00:58:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[00:58:58] [SPEAKER_03]: And then when you guys, so when you guys start dating and you're both into hiking, did you

[00:59:02] [SPEAKER_03]: just decide together, like we're going to finish the 4,000 footers?

[00:59:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Was that your first big kind of accomplishment?

[00:59:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[00:59:08] [SPEAKER_04]: That was one of our first conversation was, Hey, are you working on your 4,000 footer list

[00:59:12] [SPEAKER_04]: too?

[00:59:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Do you even know what that is?

[00:59:14] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, so yeah, we, we gauged where we were both at.

[00:59:16] [SPEAKER_04]: I had to repeat a couple.

[00:59:18] [SPEAKER_04]: She had to repeat a couple, but.

[00:59:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:59:20] [SPEAKER_03]: In those early days, do you remember like who was, who was in charge of like deciding,

[00:59:24] [SPEAKER_03]: um, who would do the hikes and, um, how did you go through the planning?

[00:59:28] [SPEAKER_03]: So I get a, I get the vibe.

[00:59:30] [SPEAKER_03]: So Lynn was like, this is what we're doing.

[00:59:31] [SPEAKER_03]: And Brad's like, okay, I'll be there.

[00:59:33] [SPEAKER_17]: Brad was sending me these hikes.

[00:59:35] [SPEAKER_17]: Cause they were like getting longer and longer and longer in mileage.

[00:59:38] [SPEAKER_17]: And before I met him, I think the longest hike I had done was like 10 miles.

[00:59:42] [SPEAKER_17]: So when like he was throwing out, like, we're going to do all the carters or like not long

[00:59:46] [SPEAKER_17]: after that, we did like Garfield, Galehead and the twins all in a day.

[00:59:50] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, I was like stressing out cause I was like, I've never done a hike that long, but

[00:59:54] [SPEAKER_17]: like, we'll, we'll go for it.

[00:59:56] [SPEAKER_17]: And so I hesitated quite a bit, but he was, he was behind all the planning on those.

[01:00:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Sounds like me and Mrs. Stomp.

[01:00:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:00:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:00:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[01:00:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, was there any concern about like matching pace or, or, or anything like that?

[01:00:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Or was it pretty, you guys match up pretty well from that perspective?

[01:00:14] [SPEAKER_17]: We match up pretty well.

[01:00:16] [SPEAKER_04]: I think we match up pretty well.

[01:00:17] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, we both just have a general understanding as anybody hiking with other people should is,

[01:00:21] [SPEAKER_04]: you know, don't hike too fast and force the other person to hike quicker.

[01:00:25] [SPEAKER_04]: If you got to slow your pace a little bit, so be it.

[01:00:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Or do you want to hike, you know, a little further ahead and then take a break while they're

[01:00:31] [SPEAKER_04]: coming up behind you?

[01:00:31] [SPEAKER_04]: That's fine too.

[01:00:32] [SPEAKER_17]: If anything, it might be a little slower cause I'm known for like way over packing.

[01:00:36] [SPEAKER_17]: And then I also like to bring my camera and all my boxes and all that stuff.

[01:00:39] [SPEAKER_17]: So my bag's always easily like 10 pounds more.

[01:00:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:00:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:00:44] [SPEAKER_03]: I, we'll talk about the photography as well for, uh, in a minute, but so that's it.

[01:00:48] [SPEAKER_03]: So you guys get going.

[01:00:49] [SPEAKER_03]: And then what was your, can you talk through like me and stop started this, but we would

[01:00:53] [SPEAKER_03]: talked about it for like years.

[01:00:55] [SPEAKER_03]: We were like, well, it'd be nice if there was a podcast about like search and rescue

[01:00:58] [SPEAKER_03]: and hiking and the whites.

[01:00:59] [SPEAKER_03]: And there wasn't anything.

[01:00:59] [SPEAKER_03]: So we're like, let's be, let's make one.

[01:01:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Took us like a few years to actually start recording, but here we are.

[01:01:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, but I'm assuming that you guys had a similar evolution where you were thinking like,

[01:01:11] [SPEAKER_03]: okay, I'm doing all this research, but I'd really like to like build

[01:01:14] [SPEAKER_03]: some resources for people to make it easier.

[01:01:17] [SPEAKER_03]: And obviously you have, like, I was looking at your, your, your Instagram page and everything.

[01:01:22] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's kind of like, I'm jealous because me and stomp have no creativity.

[01:01:25] [SPEAKER_03]: We're not very good looking either.

[01:01:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Like you guys are much better, better looking on video, but you know, can you talk through

[01:01:32] [SPEAKER_03]: like, when did you decide that you're going to go the social media route and start building

[01:01:37] [SPEAKER_03]: content to help other hikers?

[01:01:39] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah.

[01:01:40] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, I mean, it was, we actually started the Instagram account last June.

[01:01:45] [SPEAKER_17]: So it's only been a little over a year.

[01:01:47] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, and we really started it just to kind of share the adventures that we were going

[01:01:51] [SPEAKER_17]: on.

[01:01:51] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, it was Brad's idea.

[01:01:53] [SPEAKER_17]: I had done social media management for other companies.

[01:01:57] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, so I was like, well, you know, we'll start it.

[01:01:59] [SPEAKER_17]: We'll see where it goes.

[01:02:00] [SPEAKER_17]: And, um, it was kind of more like location, like suggesting locations and sharing just where

[01:02:06] [SPEAKER_17]: we were going, what we were doing.

[01:02:08] [SPEAKER_17]: And then we started to get a lot of questions in our, uh, DMS about like, you know, what

[01:02:13] [SPEAKER_17]: shoes are you wearing or how do I pack for this?

[01:02:15] [SPEAKER_17]: Or how do you guys layer?

[01:02:16] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, and then that kind of started driving where our content was going, uh, which I actually

[01:02:21] [SPEAKER_17]: really enjoyed.

[01:02:22] [SPEAKER_17]: Cause like, you know, being in the white, uh, being in the white, it's like, it's unfortunate.

[01:02:30] [SPEAKER_15]: There are that Brad is a looker.

[01:02:32] [SPEAKER_15]: As the kids say, continue, Celine.

[01:02:39] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, but yeah, it just kind of, that's how we started doing more like gear focused, um,

[01:02:44] [SPEAKER_17]: or, you know, how to pack for certain scenarios, certain weather conditions, things like that.

[01:02:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Got it.

[01:02:51] [SPEAKER_03]: And then, um, are you mostly video content video and, and obviously photos, but it's a

[01:02:56] [SPEAKER_03]: lot of, a lot of short videos, right?

[01:02:58] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah, it's mostly reels.

[01:02:59] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, my background is a lot of photography, so I work it in some, but, um, yeah, generally

[01:03:05] [SPEAKER_17]: reels.

[01:03:07] [SPEAKER_03]: And do you bring like your big camera on hikes with you?

[01:03:10] [SPEAKER_17]: I do.

[01:03:10] [SPEAKER_17]: Every hike.

[01:03:11] [SPEAKER_17]: You do.

[01:03:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:03:12] [SPEAKER_03]: And do you carry, or do you make Brad carry it sometimes?

[01:03:14] [SPEAKER_17]: Well, I carry it.

[01:03:15] [SPEAKER_17]: I got the peak design clip, so it's always right there, ready to use.

[01:03:18] [SPEAKER_03]: You do.

[01:03:18] [SPEAKER_03]: It's no problem.

[01:03:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Like it doesn't bother you, um, when you're holding it like that?

[01:03:23] [SPEAKER_17]: No, I've gotten used to it.

[01:03:24] [SPEAKER_17]: At first it did kind of hurt my shoulders a bit just because it's like such a heavy, uh, camera kind of pulling forward.

[01:03:30] [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, you can tell the quality.

[01:03:32] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like not, not iPhone pictures for sure.

[01:03:34] [SPEAKER_17]: Thanks.

[01:03:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Which is good.

[01:03:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, and then as far as the, the planning for hiking now, so you get through your, your initial list, you're working on the 52 with a view, you're working on the terrifying 25.

[01:03:45] [SPEAKER_03]: What do you guys do as far as deciding on your hikes nowadays?

[01:03:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Is it just, um, up to either one of you or does one of you decide what we're doing and the other one just tags along?

[01:03:55] [SPEAKER_04]: So at this point, Celine's pretty much steering the boat on that.

[01:03:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, it really comes down to how far do we want to drive on the weekend?

[01:04:02] [SPEAKER_04]: What kind of time do we have as well as how long has it been since we hiked last and how many miles we want to do?

[01:04:09] [SPEAKER_04]: So I'm a spreadsheet guy.

[01:04:11] [SPEAKER_04]: I love making lists so that I can just quickly look at, Hey, how many miles is this?

[01:04:15] [SPEAKER_04]: We want to do something five, six miles, just filter it and be able to see what, what are our options?

[01:04:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:04:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:04:22] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm the same way.

[01:04:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Celine's pretty much planning it out for us.

[01:04:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Nice.

[01:04:27] [SPEAKER_03]: And then Celine, what's, what are some of the most popular videos that you've made?

[01:04:30] [SPEAKER_03]: What topics bubble up to, uh, to people's interest?

[01:04:33] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, we noticed that winter hiking videos got a lot of traction.

[01:04:37] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, I think it's something that a lot of people are, you know, if you don't know someone to go with,

[01:04:41] [SPEAKER_17]: it's pretty intimidating to get into.

[01:04:43] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, and Brad has Raynaud's, so he struggles with the cold.

[01:04:47] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, so then any videos about like layering or how to keep your hands and feet warm,

[01:04:52] [SPEAKER_17]: those ones have all done really well.

[01:04:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:04:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I know when I first started hiking, like I, I would spend hours winter hiking, just figuring

[01:05:00] [SPEAKER_03]: out like, okay, well, how exactly are people doing layering for gloves or, um, trying to

[01:05:05] [SPEAKER_03]: understand exactly, you know, what, whether I should be doing thick socks or thin socks or,

[01:05:11] [SPEAKER_03]: you know, heavier insulated boots or less insulated boots.

[01:05:14] [SPEAKER_03]: And all those, there's a million different questions that come up.

[01:05:17] [SPEAKER_03]: So I have to imagine the like people that are first getting into it.

[01:05:20] [SPEAKER_03]: First of all, people that are first getting into winter hiking are usually obsessive about

[01:05:24] [SPEAKER_03]: it.

[01:05:24] [SPEAKER_03]: So having a resource where you can go and say like, okay, well, these are the gloves or

[01:05:28] [SPEAKER_03]: this is the gator that these people recommend.

[01:05:30] [SPEAKER_03]: And I can imagine it's pretty popular.

[01:05:35] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, Stomp, do you still do any research on winter hiking or are you so zeroed in on

[01:05:40] [SPEAKER_03]: your gear that you don't need anything?

[01:05:41] [SPEAKER_15]: Brad should be the 11th hiking essential.

[01:05:52] [SPEAKER_05]: Am I dialing in my winter?

[01:05:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, are you, do you, do you do any research on social media for winter hiking anymore?

[01:06:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Uh, well for gear or for what exactly?

[01:06:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Just for gear.

[01:06:06] [SPEAKER_05]: I think I'm pretty dialed in.

[01:06:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[01:06:08] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, I, I definitely overpack.

[01:06:10] [SPEAKER_05]: I think I, I tend to be the, the heavier pack in the, in a group of people when I go

[01:06:16] [SPEAKER_05]: out and it's, you pay the price for it, but you got to do it.

[01:06:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Uh, I like to be over prepared than under prepared.

[01:06:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:06:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Stomp's famous for his 90 liter backpack full of stuff for the winter.

[01:06:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:06:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[01:06:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Yep.

[01:06:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Which is good.

[01:06:31] [SPEAKER_03]: And then now you guys have, you've, you've explored beyond New Hampshire before.

[01:06:35] [SPEAKER_03]: So you've gone out to, I think I was looking here.

[01:06:38] [SPEAKER_03]: So you've been out to the Grand Canyon.

[01:06:40] [SPEAKER_03]: You've been around Arizona and Utah.

[01:06:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Can you talk a little bit about, um, about those trips?

[01:06:44] [SPEAKER_03]: So I've been to Arizona, Sedona.

[01:06:46] [SPEAKER_03]: I've been to the Grand Canyon.

[01:06:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, looks like you guys did Humphreys.

[01:06:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I never did that.

[01:06:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I did.

[01:06:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I went around page and I've done the Grand Canyon, but talk a little bit about your, your trips

[01:06:55] [SPEAKER_03]: in Arizona and Utah.

[01:06:57] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah.

[01:06:57] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, so my dad travels for work a lot.

[01:07:00] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, so those are kind of why we've been out to those places.

[01:07:04] [SPEAKER_17]: My mom and I would always go out to visit him.

[01:07:05] [SPEAKER_17]: And then now, uh, or since I met Brad the first year, we went to Utah cause he was out

[01:07:10] [SPEAKER_17]: there.

[01:07:10] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, and when we went to Utah, we hiked Timpanogos, which is still, I think probably both of our

[01:07:16] [SPEAKER_17]: like favorite hike we've ever done.

[01:07:18] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, it was just incredible.

[01:07:20] [SPEAKER_17]: There was mountain goats and moose and deer and we went in the fall.

[01:07:23] [SPEAKER_17]: So it was just so beautiful.

[01:07:25] [SPEAKER_04]: And the terrain is so different as you're going up too.

[01:07:28] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's, you're not just in the trees and all of a sudden you're, you're out on rocks on

[01:07:31] [SPEAKER_04]: the top.

[01:07:32] [SPEAKER_04]: It was almost like it was three different worlds combined into one.

[01:07:35] [SPEAKER_04]: It was just amazing.

[01:07:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:07:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:07:37] [SPEAKER_03]: It's crazy out there.

[01:07:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Totally different.

[01:07:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Cause everything's wide open, but the heat too, can be crazy too.

[01:07:43] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, and then Arizona, my dad was also working there the past couple of years.

[01:07:47] [SPEAKER_17]: So that's why we've made a couple of trips out there.

[01:07:50] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, and then one of those was, uh, hiking rim to rim of the grand Canyon.

[01:07:54] [SPEAKER_17]: I had done it once, I think in 2018, but I did it, it was like, you know, the opportunity

[01:08:01] [SPEAKER_17]: came up, I was doing this internship and it was kind of hard to say no to, we got a permit,

[01:08:05] [SPEAKER_17]: but it was in July and it never dropped below like 102 degrees.

[01:08:09] [SPEAKER_17]: So it was like so miserable, but it was, it was beautiful, but it was just, you couldn't

[01:08:15] [SPEAKER_17]: even enjoy it.

[01:08:15] [SPEAKER_17]: You were just so uncomfortable the whole time.

[01:08:17] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, so I swore I would never do it again.

[01:08:20] [SPEAKER_17]: And then I met Brad and we were out in Arizona and he was like, wow, I'd like really like

[01:08:24] [SPEAKER_17]: to do that.

[01:08:24] [SPEAKER_17]: And I was like, okay, we'll, we'll do it.

[01:08:27] [SPEAKER_17]: So, uh, thankfully this time we went in October, it was still like eighties though.

[01:08:32] [SPEAKER_17]: It's still hot.

[01:08:32] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah.

[01:08:33] [SPEAKER_17]: But that was, it was really cool to do it again.

[01:08:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Did you do that in one day or did you stay out?

[01:08:37] [SPEAKER_17]: Oh, we did one night.

[01:08:38] [SPEAKER_17]: Uh, we camped.

[01:08:39] [SPEAKER_17]: We just found that, um, bright angel Cape ground.

[01:08:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Bright angel.

[01:08:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[01:08:43] [SPEAKER_03]: So, uh, yeah, I've only done, you know, I didn't go down to the floor, but, um, someday

[01:08:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I want to do that.

[01:08:49] [SPEAKER_03]: And then as far as the, the camping goes, do you, are you hammockers, tent people?

[01:08:54] [SPEAKER_03]: How do you do the backpacking gear?

[01:08:56] [SPEAKER_17]: We use a three person tent, just extra room for gear and stuff.

[01:09:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Just be able to put your gear inside if it's wet or raining.

[01:09:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Nice.

[01:09:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Nice.

[01:09:05] [SPEAKER_03]: And the, um, the, the logistics of doing rim to rim, how do you, so obviously you leave,

[01:09:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm assuming you left from the south and then went north and then you get a ride back.

[01:09:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Is that, that how it works?

[01:09:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Uh, we did the shuttle.

[01:09:18] [SPEAKER_04]: So we actually took the shuttle up to the north rim.

[01:09:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[01:09:21] [SPEAKER_04]: And then stayed there one night in our tent.

[01:09:25] [SPEAKER_04]: And then the next morning we woke up before sunrise, hit the trail, just to try to beat

[01:09:28] [SPEAKER_04]: the heat in the afternoon.

[01:09:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, made it all the way to bright angel, set up camp and then headed out at like what?

[01:09:35] [SPEAKER_04]: 3am the next day in the pitch black.

[01:09:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[01:09:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Just again, trying to beat the heat before you get on that Southern wall.

[01:09:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:09:42] [SPEAKER_03]: And then the water, like they have water on the trails that you can, you can access pretty

[01:09:46] [SPEAKER_03]: easily.

[01:09:51] [SPEAKER_03]: To stay hydrated.

[01:09:53] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[01:09:53] [SPEAKER_04]: So when we went out, they actually had a pipe burst.

[01:09:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[01:09:56] [SPEAKER_04]: So the whole Northern section, they didn't have water.

[01:10:01] [SPEAKER_04]: All the way to Phantom Ranch.

[01:10:03] [SPEAKER_04]: From the north.

[01:10:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Did you have enough to get you to Phantom?

[01:10:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, they must've told you like, Hey, load up on water.

[01:10:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[01:10:09] [SPEAKER_04]: So we had enough.

[01:10:10] [SPEAKER_04]: They also recommended that you bring some sort of water purification, whether it's the

[01:10:14] [SPEAKER_04]: tablets or a filter or something.

[01:10:15] [SPEAKER_04]: And we had all that just in case.

[01:10:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, luckily we didn't end up meeting it.

[01:10:19] [SPEAKER_04]: We were able to make it to Phantom Ranch with the water that we had.

[01:10:22] [SPEAKER_04]: And that's where we were able to fill up.

[01:10:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Nice.

[01:10:26] [SPEAKER_03]: And then, uh, was it a one and done for you?

[01:10:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Will you go back?

[01:10:30] [SPEAKER_04]: That's a good question.

[01:10:31] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it was great.

[01:10:32] [SPEAKER_04]: If, if I ever do it again, I think I would try to do it over maybe three days just to

[01:10:37] [SPEAKER_04]: enjoy it a little bit more instead of always being on the move.

[01:10:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:10:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[01:10:42] [SPEAKER_17]: I would do it again, but over a little bit of a longer period of time.

[01:10:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Would you just camp down on the floor and do swimming for one day or something and just

[01:10:51] [SPEAKER_03]: just give it a rest?

[01:10:53] [SPEAKER_03]: So Dave, have you been out there?

[01:10:55] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes.

[01:10:56] [SPEAKER_03]: You have?

[01:10:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:10:57] [SPEAKER_06]: Arizona, Utah area, um, years ago, back in the nineties.

[01:11:02] [SPEAKER_03]: What's your opinion?

[01:11:02] [SPEAKER_03]: If someone was going to hike the Grand Canyon, what is your preferred advice?

[01:11:06] [SPEAKER_06]: Don't.

[01:11:08] [SPEAKER_06]: Don't?

[01:11:08] [SPEAKER_06]: No, I'm kidding.

[01:11:09] [SPEAKER_06]: It's, um, you gotta be comfortable with the narrow ledges and when the mules come up,

[01:11:16] [SPEAKER_06]: they, uh, don't look at them because they will slide legs off.

[01:11:19] [SPEAKER_06]: It's intimidating.

[01:11:21] [SPEAKER_06]: Um, we only went part way down and it's, it's a thing.

[01:11:25] [SPEAKER_06]: It's backwards from here.

[01:11:26] [SPEAKER_06]: You go down instead of up and then, you know, it gets hot as it goes and it's, it's intimidating.

[01:11:31] [SPEAKER_06]: It's not a lot of shelter.

[01:11:33] [SPEAKER_06]: It's slippery.

[01:11:34] [SPEAKER_06]: So wait a minute.

[01:11:35] [SPEAKER_06]: So when the mules are going up, they're on the cliff side, correct?

[01:11:38] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[01:11:38] [SPEAKER_06]: You share the trail, the narrows and like you, you, I think have to go to the inside

[01:11:44] [SPEAKER_06]: and they'll just slide their legs right off the edges.

[01:11:47] [SPEAKER_06]: Like they, they're just balanced.

[01:11:49] [SPEAKER_06]: Yippee.

[01:11:50] [SPEAKER_06]: It's what they do.

[01:11:52] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[01:11:53] [SPEAKER_06]: No, thanks.

[01:11:53] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[01:11:54] [SPEAKER_06]: That's kind of where I went.

[01:11:55] [SPEAKER_06]: I was on my honeymoon and I was pretty, pretty made clear.

[01:11:59] [SPEAKER_06]: We're not doing this.

[01:12:01] [SPEAKER_06]: Ever again.

[01:12:02] [SPEAKER_06]: No.

[01:12:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Was that the last time your wife went hiking with you?

[01:12:06] [SPEAKER_06]: Close to it.

[01:12:07] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[01:12:08] [SPEAKER_06]: It's funny you say that.

[01:12:09] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[01:12:09] [SPEAKER_06]: And horse riding.

[01:12:10] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes.

[01:12:11] [SPEAKER_06]: Yup.

[01:12:12] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[01:12:12] [SPEAKER_06]: We ruined a lot of things on that trip.

[01:12:14] [SPEAKER_07]: Right.

[01:12:17] [SPEAKER_06]: But you guys will be fine.

[01:12:18] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm sure it's fine.

[01:12:18] [SPEAKER_06]: You guys are great.

[01:12:19] [SPEAKER_06]: It's going to be fine.

[01:12:19] [SPEAKER_06]: Don't worry about it.

[01:12:20] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes.

[01:12:21] [SPEAKER_03]: They'll be fine.

[01:12:22] [SPEAKER_03]: So, and then you've been out to, uh, you've been to Costa Rica and then you've been in

[01:12:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Nepal as well.

[01:12:26] [SPEAKER_03]: How was Nepal?

[01:12:27] [SPEAKER_03]: It sounds like I was reading about that a little bit.

[01:12:29] [SPEAKER_03]: So it sounds like that wasn't, didn't go as planned, but, uh, we'll talk a little bit

[01:12:34] [SPEAKER_03]: about your trip out there.

[01:12:35] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah.

[01:12:36] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah.

[01:12:36] [SPEAKER_17]: Uh, we were going to do the three passes track.

[01:12:38] [SPEAKER_17]: It was going to be like a three week hike.

[01:12:40] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, and we ended up coming home on day five.

[01:12:43] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, five, um, yeah, you can.

[01:12:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[01:12:48] [SPEAKER_04]: So it was supposed to be a 17 day trek.

[01:12:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, just over a hundred miles.

[01:12:52] [SPEAKER_04]: We were going to go to ever space camp as well, and then go through the three tallest

[01:12:56] [SPEAKER_04]: passes in the Himalayas.

[01:12:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, we got there on day one.

[01:12:59] [SPEAKER_04]: It was great.

[01:13:00] [SPEAKER_04]: We thought one of my bags might've been lost, ended up coming on a later helicopter cause

[01:13:05] [SPEAKER_04]: it didn't make it on the plane that we were on.

[01:13:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, so we got our bags, hit the trail.

[01:13:09] [SPEAKER_04]: The views were incredible.

[01:13:11] [SPEAKER_04]: The people are amazing out there.

[01:13:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, seeing a lot of the wild dogs was kind of cute cause someone loves dogs.

[01:13:17] [SPEAKER_04]: So you know, you're not supposed to pet them.

[01:13:19] [SPEAKER_04]: She's petting all of them.

[01:13:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.

[01:13:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, why aren't you supposed to pet them?

[01:13:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Uh, rabies.

[01:13:24] [SPEAKER_04]: A lot of them.

[01:13:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, rabies.

[01:13:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh boy.

[01:13:27] [SPEAKER_06]: Pretty good reason.

[01:13:29] [SPEAKER_04]: So then hit it to our first tea house.

[01:13:31] [SPEAKER_04]: And then that's where things kind of went sideways.

[01:13:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, my stomach started to hurt.

[01:13:35] [SPEAKER_04]: I didn't feel good.

[01:13:36] [SPEAKER_04]: So I ended up going to bed before dinner and five hours later, I just woke up with the

[01:13:42] [SPEAKER_04]: worst pain in my stomach that I've ever felt in my life.

[01:13:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Battled through it for a couple more hours.

[01:13:46] [SPEAKER_04]: And our guide ended up suggesting that I needed to go to the hospital.

[01:13:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, but when you're out there, the only way in and out is hiking your helicopter.

[01:13:55] [SPEAKER_04]: There's no roads.

[01:13:56] [SPEAKER_04]: There's no cars where you're at in Himalayas.

[01:13:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, luckily they had a group of army men there.

[01:14:01] [SPEAKER_04]: So six of them came and carried me on a stretcher for an hour back down to another village where

[01:14:07] [SPEAKER_04]: they had the closest, you know, quote unquote hospital.

[01:14:10] [SPEAKER_04]: And we didn't know at the time what it was, but we ended up finding out later it was appendicitis.

[01:14:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh wow.

[01:14:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Ended up treating it with antibiotics and, um, fast forward three months here in the United

[01:14:23] [SPEAKER_04]: States.

[01:14:23] [SPEAKER_04]: This was actually like a month ago.

[01:14:25] [SPEAKER_04]: I ended up having my appendix taken out cause it flared up again.

[01:14:28] [SPEAKER_04]: And the doctor said, if you treat it with antibiotics, there's a 30% chance in three months, you're

[01:14:35] [SPEAKER_04]: going to have a problem again.

[01:14:36] [SPEAKER_04]: And that's exactly what happened.

[01:14:38] [SPEAKER_04]: So luckily they performed surgery there in Nepal.

[01:14:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, luckily you, they, you were able to sort of delay it to get back to the U S but wow.

[01:14:47] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, so Celine, there's nothing you can say.

[01:14:49] [SPEAKER_03]: You can't be like, Oh, he ruined my trip.

[01:14:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Like he was legitimately sick, right?

[01:14:53] [SPEAKER_17]: I mean, it was day one and I did.

[01:14:55] [SPEAKER_17]: I was like, I am totally fine with going home.

[01:14:57] [SPEAKER_17]: Like you were, I was distraught.

[01:14:59] [SPEAKER_17]: I've never seen someone in so much pain.

[01:15:01] [SPEAKER_17]: So I was like, you have to, yeah.

[01:15:04] [SPEAKER_17]: That's what you want.

[01:15:05] [SPEAKER_03]: But he, yeah, you've probably done enough with him where, you know, he's not faking it.

[01:15:08] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah.

[01:15:09] [SPEAKER_17]: So I, we kept going for a couple of days and then I ended up with really severe food poisoning

[01:15:14] [SPEAKER_17]: a couple of days later.

[01:15:15] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, so day four of that.

[01:15:17] [SPEAKER_05]: Damn.

[01:15:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Great time.

[01:15:19] [SPEAKER_17]: And yeah.

[01:15:20] [SPEAKER_15]: And I slept for like 24 hours and I had to get, you guys are doing great.

[01:15:26] [SPEAKER_15]: Don't blow it now.

[01:15:30] [SPEAKER_17]: Roller coaster.

[01:15:31] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, yeah.

[01:15:33] [SPEAKER_17]: And then Brad wanted to propose on the trip.

[01:15:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, well, before that with her food poisoning, she ended up having to get seen by a doctor

[01:15:41] [SPEAKER_04]: too, because she was in a lot of pain and some other complications were going on.

[01:15:45] [SPEAKER_04]: But the doctor basically said, you need to rest for two days.

[01:15:48] [SPEAKER_04]: You're not allowed to go up any higher in elevation and then you need to hike out.

[01:15:52] [SPEAKER_04]: So like Selin just said, she was resting for probably a full day and a half.

[01:15:57] [SPEAKER_04]: She wasn't able to put any food down.

[01:15:59] [SPEAKER_04]: She couldn't even make it down the stairs for breakfast in the morning at the tea house.

[01:16:03] [SPEAKER_04]: She was just completely fatigued and wiped out.

[01:16:06] [SPEAKER_04]: And she didn't know, but I was planning on proposing on this trip.

[01:16:11] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm thinking I almost canceled our trip because I got sick.

[01:16:14] [SPEAKER_04]: Now she's sick in bed, not doing well.

[01:16:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Can't even like get up and move or anything.

[01:16:20] [SPEAKER_04]: So should I do this or should I go home and do it on Washington?

[01:16:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, but the thought was, cause I asked her out on Mansfield in Vermont, tallest mountain

[01:16:28] [SPEAKER_04]: there.

[01:16:29] [SPEAKER_04]: How do you want to up that?

[01:16:30] [SPEAKER_04]: So you go to the tallest mountain in the world.

[01:16:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[01:16:32] [SPEAKER_04]: But, um, so since she wasn't able to really walk or anything, I said, there's no way she's

[01:16:37] [SPEAKER_04]: going to make it out three days of hiking to get back down.

[01:16:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, so I ended up coordinating with our guide and rented a helicopter to come pick us up

[01:16:45] [SPEAKER_04]: and ask them to fly us over every space camp.

[01:16:49] [SPEAKER_04]: And that's where I proposed.

[01:16:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, that's, that's, that's a good save.

[01:16:52] [SPEAKER_03]: I like that.

[01:16:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Unique.

[01:16:55] [SPEAKER_07]: Yep.

[01:16:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:16:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Wow.

[01:16:57] [SPEAKER_03]: That's, that's something else.

[01:16:59] [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, I mean, so guys, I think Iceland, it's, you go, go to Iceland, you'll be a little

[01:17:03] [SPEAKER_03]: bit better.

[01:17:04] [SPEAKER_03]: It's a four hour trip.

[01:17:05] [SPEAKER_02]: It's not as exotic.

[01:17:06] [SPEAKER_02]: They got regular food there.

[01:17:08] [SPEAKER_02]: They got hospitals that are very close by.

[01:17:10] [SPEAKER_02]: You'll be fine.

[01:17:11] [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, that sounds good.

[01:17:14] [SPEAKER_03]: And then you went to Costa Rica for a couple of weeks too.

[01:17:16] [SPEAKER_03]: But is that like a, that's, is that a hiking trip or is that more of a, um, just rainforest

[01:17:21] [SPEAKER_03]: and beaches, right?

[01:17:23] [SPEAKER_17]: There was, we did some hiking, but yeah, a lot of more sightseeing, tropical, yeah.

[01:17:29] [SPEAKER_17]: Volcanoes.

[01:17:29] [SPEAKER_17]: We saw a couple volcanoes, but.

[01:17:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Awesome.

[01:17:32] [SPEAKER_03]: And then your next adventure is just, so you got a fifth wheeler.

[01:17:35] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, you're a little bit behind this trend.

[01:17:38] [SPEAKER_03]: This was like a 2001 kind of trend, COVID trend, but you are, you're jumping on this.

[01:17:44] [SPEAKER_03]: So what's the plan with this?

[01:17:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Are you going to actually go on the road longterm or is this like just something they're going

[01:17:49] [SPEAKER_03]: to do for a couple of months and try it out?

[01:17:51] [SPEAKER_04]: So our initial plan is two years and then see where we're at.

[01:17:55] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay.

[01:17:56] [SPEAKER_04]: We'll probably go out for 11 months of the year and then come back for a month just to

[01:18:00] [SPEAKER_04]: touch base, see family, checkups, doctor visits, all that.

[01:18:03] [SPEAKER_04]: But I think we want to head out West.

[01:18:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Our first stop is going to be Utah, Utah, Arizona area, work our way up California.

[01:18:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[01:18:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Did you find it?

[01:18:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, so I'm assuming you got a, like a pickup truck that you pull in this thing on and did

[01:18:18] [SPEAKER_03]: you find it hard to find what you wanted as far as shopping for this thing or is it pretty

[01:18:23] [SPEAKER_03]: easy to find, find them?

[01:18:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Finding the camper was the hard part because we know we have a lot of outdoor activities.

[01:18:30] [SPEAKER_04]: So we have a lot of gear to bring and campers these days, they're just the payload capacity

[01:18:36] [SPEAKER_04]: that they have for ratings.

[01:18:37] [SPEAKER_04]: They're just not very high.

[01:18:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Once your clothes are in there, you're almost at your max weight.

[01:18:41] [SPEAKER_04]: So really, really limited on needing to find a camper that was short enough to get us into

[01:18:46] [SPEAKER_04]: most national parks or state parks, but also giving us enough space to bring our stuff

[01:18:51] [SPEAKER_04]: to live in it full time.

[01:18:52] [SPEAKER_04]: And then I'm going to have to work on the road as an engineer.

[01:18:55] [SPEAKER_04]: So I need to have a, an office set up.

[01:18:58] [SPEAKER_04]: So that's some renovations in it too.

[01:19:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Are you set?

[01:19:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Are you bringing Starlink along for internet?

[01:19:03] [SPEAKER_04]: One of our options?

[01:19:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[01:19:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:19:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:19:05] [SPEAKER_03]: We had that up in Maine.

[01:19:06] [SPEAKER_03]: It works great.

[01:19:07] [SPEAKER_03]: So as long as you got a clear sky, you'll be, you'll be in good shape.

[01:19:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, and then Celine, like, I hope that you leverage this opportunity to tell him, like,

[01:19:15] [SPEAKER_03]: if he's going to drag you around for two years, like you need a dog for companionship.

[01:19:19] [SPEAKER_03]: If he's going to be working, right?

[01:19:20] [SPEAKER_17]: Well, so they're not allowed in national parks.

[01:19:23] [SPEAKER_17]: So we determined once we get back, we'll get a dog.

[01:19:26] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[01:19:26] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[01:19:27] [SPEAKER_03]: That's fair enough.

[01:19:28] [SPEAKER_03]: That's fair enough.

[01:19:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, and then do you, did she say yes?

[01:19:34] [SPEAKER_03]: She said no.

[01:19:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Aurora.

[01:19:37] [SPEAKER_04]: She said, of course.

[01:19:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, of course.

[01:19:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:19:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Yay.

[01:19:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, yes, exactly.

[01:19:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, so you've, you're going to go out West to start with.

[01:19:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Are you going to go outside the U S or you're going to go to South America?

[01:19:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Are you going to go to South America?

[01:19:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Are you going to go to Canada?

[01:19:52] [SPEAKER_03]: What's, what's the plan?

[01:19:53] [SPEAKER_17]: I mean, I'd love to go to Banff or really dreaming.

[01:19:56] [SPEAKER_17]: I'd love to go to Alaska someday, but that definitely won't be during our first year.

[01:19:59] [SPEAKER_17]: I think if we do that, it would be the second year.

[01:20:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[01:20:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you, uh, people romanticize this.

[01:20:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, cause I had my cousin on, we did an episode about, um, her, she took her whole family

[01:20:10] [SPEAKER_03]: for, uh, a little over a year.

[01:20:13] [SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, I, I remember talking to her and she said that people do romanticize it

[01:20:18] [SPEAKER_03]: a little bit and that it is a fair amount of work, but that there is the opportunity

[01:20:22] [SPEAKER_03]: to find connections.

[01:20:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Like there's whole communities of, of fifth wheelers that, um, that will go around and

[01:20:28] [SPEAKER_03]: you get to make friends and things like that.

[01:20:30] [SPEAKER_03]: But she said after a year, she was ready to get back to sort of the, the, the home life.

[01:20:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, so I don't know, is there any concern about like, is it with a two year plan?

[01:20:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you think that you'll eventually get tired of living on the road or you won't know until

[01:20:44] [SPEAKER_03]: you get out there?

[01:20:46] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't think we're going to know until we get out there.

[01:20:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, if anybody's going to say they want to turn around, it's probably going to be me cause

[01:20:52] [SPEAKER_04]: I like my creature comforts, but, uh, we're going to keep our sticks and bricks home so

[01:20:56] [SPEAKER_04]: that if something happens on the way or we get homesick, we can come back at any time

[01:21:00] [SPEAKER_04]: and readjust the length that we're on the road.

[01:21:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. That makes sense. And then Celine, you'll have an endless amount of content to create

[01:21:08] [SPEAKER_03]: and reels and videos to make so that you'll be in heaven for at least for a while.

[01:21:12] [SPEAKER_17]: Yep. Definitely.

[01:21:14] [SPEAKER_03]: All right. How many national parks do you think you're going to visit?

[01:21:18] [SPEAKER_04]: We want to try to hit them all.

[01:21:19] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah. I'd love to hit them all at some point, but.

[01:21:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. Yeah. Yosemite to me was, I haven't been a lot of them, but Yosemite is amazing.

[01:21:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Like I definitely recommend getting out there.

[01:21:30] [SPEAKER_03]: You just have to go to.

[01:21:31] [SPEAKER_03]: I just, I just got back from that like six months ago.

[01:21:34] [SPEAKER_17]: I'd love to do that.

[01:21:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Yep. That'll be fun. And then, um, I'm trying to think of what other national parks have I been to?

[01:21:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, you know, Grand Canyon. Uh, but that's about it. I haven't really done.

[01:21:45] [SPEAKER_03]: I've heard that, uh, glaciers on unbelievable. Dave, you, have you, you've been to a few of these, right?

[01:21:51] [SPEAKER_06]: Yellowstone.

[01:21:53] [SPEAKER_06]: Yellowstone's one of the greatest places on earth. It's amazing.

[01:21:57] [SPEAKER_06]: I either recommend it. And others, I don't know. He caught me off guard.

[01:22:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. I'm sorry. Sorry, Dave, but you guys are going to live your best life. Um, other questions I have.

[01:22:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you have any go-to gear or any gear advice that you want to share with the listeners?

[01:22:13] [SPEAKER_03]: What is your, your typical setup for a, like a day hike in the summer?

[01:22:18] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, so we actually did, this is not really gear specific, but we do have like a guide on our website that we created for every, um, season for what we pack for our day hikes.

[01:22:27] [SPEAKER_17]: Cause we were getting a lot of questions about like, what do you pack? You know, fall, spring, winter, what's the differences?

[01:22:33] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, so that can be found on our website. It's just a little PDF you can download. Um, it does also have specific links to our personal gear.

[01:22:40] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, a lot of layers, coats, um, puffy pants, a lot of random items that we like.

[01:22:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. Yeah. I'll, I'll include those links in the show notes. And then as far as plugging all of your sites. So your, your website with your blog is wild and outdoors.com. And then your Instagram, I'm going to ask you to do it because there's like an underscore in there and I don't want to screw it up.

[01:23:05] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah. It's a wild and out underscore doors.

[01:23:09] [SPEAKER_03]: You got it. And then, uh, you hit, so definitely follow them. They've got good content. I don't follow too many like outdoor influencers.

[01:23:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Like I like you guys. Um, the guy that there's another guy that he's always like, um, my name is Sparky and he's always talking about like, he's making fun of hiking. I forget. He just did a video. Um, or he'll be like, my name's Pemi and I'm doing the 4,000 footers. You know, that guy I'm talking about stomp with the blonde hair.

[01:23:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. Yeah. The blonde hair guy.

[01:23:39] [SPEAKER_05]: He's fairly new. I think I just, he just got on my radar too.

[01:23:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Like my kids will like send me his TikToks and they'll be like, Oh dad, this guy, he, he, he sounds like you sometimes.

[01:23:50] [SPEAKER_05]: It's funny.

[01:23:50] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, no, I don't sound like that.

[01:23:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. Listeners have been asking for us to reach out to him to see if we can get him on.

[01:23:57] [SPEAKER_05]: But, uh, maybe.

[01:23:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we'll see. But I, he stands out and there's a few other people, but, but you guys get good stuff. So I'll make sure I link those in the show notes.

[01:24:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Is there anything else? Um, the website, the Instagram, anything else they should follow?

[01:24:12] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, we do have YouTube, Facebook and TikTok. We're not, our YouTube is going to be mostly like camper modifications.

[01:24:19] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, okay.

[01:24:20] [SPEAKER_17]: But yeah.

[01:24:21] [SPEAKER_03]: I like those. I watch those videos. So I have one TikTok video that has a million views. I don't want to brag or anything.

[01:24:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. Yeah. It's, it's, it's a video of Turks and Caicos, but then, uh, it says, um, the Merrimack river in Lawrence, Massachusetts, like a five second video.

[01:24:39] [SPEAKER_02]: And it got a million views. And I was like showing my kids and they're, they're like, how can you get that many views for a stupid video like that? And I was like, I don't know.

[01:24:47] [SPEAKER_02]: It works. So part of it's luck stomp.

[01:24:52] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. Speaking of luck, have you guys had any close calls with, um, mishaps or search and rescue or anything like that?

[01:25:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Don't believe so.

[01:25:02] [SPEAKER_05]: Knock on wood.

[01:25:03] [SPEAKER_04]: I wouldn't say if we've ever been on the verge of needing to call for help. I would say when we were on Mansfield and...

[01:25:09] [SPEAKER_17]: Mansfield and Washington, um, we've been on a negative 30 and both of those were rough.

[01:25:15] [SPEAKER_05]: Negative 30. Windchill or base or what?

[01:25:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Windchill.

[01:25:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. Okay.

[01:25:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. I don't know much about Manchester. I get nervous being that the thing about Washington when you're in that windchill for that, you're above treeline for so long.

[01:25:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Like me and stomp have done crazy cold hikes, but usually like in, like we did flume and Liberty where you kind of, you're above treeline, but you can duck back in.

[01:25:38] [SPEAKER_03]: So that's pretty brave to do a hike that that's good. Did your gear hold up or were you, were you cold?

[01:25:44] [SPEAKER_07]: It held up well.

[01:25:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, our gear held up well. I think we made it to Lake of the Clouds, assess the situation before we continue.

[01:25:50] [SPEAKER_04]: We continued to be, you know, exposed along the ridgeline and...

[01:25:53] [SPEAKER_17]: We were up there for sunset.

[01:25:54] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah.

[01:25:55] [SPEAKER_17]: And then as soon as the sun set, the temperature dropped.

[01:25:57] [SPEAKER_17]: Um, but we also brought butt sleds.

[01:25:59] [SPEAKER_17]: So we butt sleded down the cog.

[01:26:01] [SPEAKER_17]: So we got along really fast.

[01:26:02] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah.

[01:26:03] [SPEAKER_03]: That's a quick trip for sure.

[01:26:04] [SPEAKER_03]: And then with the rain holes, do you have anything special that you do to stay warm?

[01:26:08] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's taken me years to figure out a system that at least works for me.

[01:26:12] [SPEAKER_04]: One of the biggest things that Celine came across is this sort of lotion called warm skin.

[01:26:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, it's just like a lotion you put on your toes and your fingers and it helps insulate them.

[01:26:23] [SPEAKER_04]: And I find that helps so much that I don't even need to wear some gloves sometimes when I'm starting out hiking.

[01:26:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, the other thing is I always had toe warmers if I'm going to be doing big hikes.

[01:26:34] [SPEAKER_04]: And we ended up getting these little like electric hand warmers so that we could recharge them if we wanted to.

[01:26:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, those have helped a lot.

[01:26:43] [SPEAKER_04]: And then using mittens instead of gloves.

[01:26:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:26:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:26:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Those, um, electric hand warmers.

[01:26:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I just got those.

[01:26:48] [SPEAKER_03]: My daughter's boyfriend bought me those.

[01:26:51] [SPEAKER_03]: They're a little heavy, but like I, I've actually found that they're perfect.

[01:26:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Like I've, I've used them quite a few times.

[01:26:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Matter of fact, when my daughter was like really cold on cannon, I broke those things out and they're, they fire up right away.

[01:27:03] [SPEAKER_03]: And they're, they're super warm.

[01:27:05] [SPEAKER_03]: So a little heavy, but I like them for sure.

[01:27:09] [SPEAKER_15]: Try Preparation H.

[01:27:11] [SPEAKER_15]: Oh, you said Raynoins.

[01:27:13] [SPEAKER_15]: Sorry.

[01:27:16] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, Aurora thought you were talking about something else.

[01:27:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Good Lord.

[01:27:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I apologize that we're experimenting on you guys, but, um, and then did you guys say, are you married yet?

[01:27:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Or is the wedding happening?

[01:27:32] [SPEAKER_03]: What's the deal?

[01:27:34] [SPEAKER_06]: Wow.

[01:27:34] [SPEAKER_06]: Put the pressure on him, Mike.

[01:27:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Jeez.

[01:27:38] [SPEAKER_03]: When is the wedding?

[01:27:39] [SPEAKER_04]: The money that we had for the wedding was spent on the camper.

[01:27:42] [SPEAKER_04]: So.

[01:27:43] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay.

[01:27:43] [SPEAKER_04]: So well spent.

[01:27:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[01:27:46] [SPEAKER_03]: So just get married, like find a justice of the peace somewhere out West and then just do it.

[01:27:51] [SPEAKER_03]: So.

[01:27:51] [SPEAKER_03]: We'll see.

[01:27:51] [SPEAKER_04]: We wanted to have family around, but.

[01:27:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:27:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:27:54] [SPEAKER_03]: That's true.

[01:27:54] [SPEAKER_03]: So, but that's good.

[01:27:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I honestly, like I, I think, you know, weddings are nice, but it's like one day, you know,

[01:28:01] [SPEAKER_03]: you're going to, you're going to have two years worth of memories.

[01:28:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Exactly.

[01:28:04] [SPEAKER_03]: So that's not bad.

[01:28:06] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[01:28:06] [SPEAKER_03]: So did I miss any questions?

[01:28:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Dave, do you have anything that you want to cover with Celine and Brad, or did I catch

[01:28:13] [SPEAKER_03]: all the questions that you wanted to.

[01:28:15] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know if they covered, if they were chasing any sort of lists or if they just like to hike

[01:28:20] [SPEAKER_06]: when they want to hike.

[01:28:23] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know if I missed that.

[01:28:25] [SPEAKER_06]: Feel free to not chime in anybody.

[01:28:27] [SPEAKER_06]: That'd be great.

[01:28:27] [SPEAKER_06]: This is awkward.

[01:28:29] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[01:28:30] [SPEAKER_17]: We're working on the 52.

[01:28:32] [SPEAKER_17]: I think we have six left.

[01:28:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Yep.

[01:28:34] [SPEAKER_17]: And then nine left on the terrifying 25.

[01:28:37] [SPEAKER_17]: Nice.

[01:28:38] [SPEAKER_03]: So you got to finish those before you hit the road.

[01:28:41] [SPEAKER_07]: I'm going to try, but it'll be close.

[01:28:42] [SPEAKER_04]: We were hoping to use our camper to go way up north to be able to kind of camp in one

[01:28:46] [SPEAKER_04]: spot and hit them all.

[01:28:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[01:28:49] [SPEAKER_06]: Are you going to stay where it's warm constantly?

[01:28:51] [SPEAKER_06]: Are you going to like go where it's, are you going to winter camp with the trailer at

[01:28:55] [SPEAKER_06]: all?

[01:28:57] [SPEAKER_04]: No winter camping.

[01:28:58] [SPEAKER_06]: Smart.

[01:29:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[01:29:01] [SPEAKER_03]: So in the wintertime, so you're going to be like down in like Southern California or

[01:29:05] [SPEAKER_03]: like, are you going to do anything in the, you can do any with anything flat, like the

[01:29:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Southeast of the U S at all, or are you going to just stay a West?

[01:29:11] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah.

[01:29:12] [SPEAKER_17]: So this fall we're heading to Utah and then we'll be in like Arizona and then around Joshua

[01:29:17] [SPEAKER_17]: tree probably until it warms up and then we'll start heading up the coast in next spring.

[01:29:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[01:29:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Anything in like Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, any, any of that area?

[01:29:29] [SPEAKER_17]: We do have family on, in those areas.

[01:29:32] [SPEAKER_17]: So we're hoping one of the years or maybe next fall when we come back home, maybe go up

[01:29:38] [SPEAKER_17]: the coastline.

[01:29:40] Okay.

[01:29:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[01:29:41] [SPEAKER_04]: This year we're kind of leaving a little later than expected because we have a couple of

[01:29:45] [SPEAKER_04]: weddings in October to be at.

[01:29:46] [SPEAKER_04]: So as soon as the last one ends, we're going to hit the road.

[01:29:49] [SPEAKER_04]: But at that point we're just making a beeline across the United States instead of making

[01:29:54] [SPEAKER_04]: our way down across the South.

[01:29:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:29:56] [SPEAKER_03]: You guys strike me.

[01:29:57] [SPEAKER_03]: You're in that age group where everyone's getting married at this point, right?

[01:30:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh yeah.

[01:30:01] [SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, yeah, it is.

[01:30:04] [SPEAKER_03]: So, all right.

[01:30:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, well, this is good.

[01:30:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to look forward to following along on your adventures.

[01:30:08] [SPEAKER_03]: We'll definitely stay in touch and hopefully, you know, you guys can check in when you're

[01:30:13] [SPEAKER_03]: doing some cool stuff.

[01:30:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Let me know when you get up to Yosemite and you climb Half Dome.

[01:30:18] [SPEAKER_03]: That's an epic day for sure.

[01:30:19] [SPEAKER_07]: Absolutely.

[01:30:20] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[01:30:21] [SPEAKER_03]: So, Stomp, anything else?

[01:30:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Do you guys have your slasher patches to take with you?

[01:30:29] [SPEAKER_17]: We do not yet.

[01:30:30] [SPEAKER_17]: All right.

[01:30:31] [SPEAKER_17]: But we should.

[01:30:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[01:30:32] [SPEAKER_05]: Why don't you sign in and give us your address and we'll send them along.

[01:30:36] [SPEAKER_07]: All right.

[01:30:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[01:30:37] [SPEAKER_03]: We can give you that link for sure.

[01:30:40] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[01:30:41] [SPEAKER_03]: So next up, Stomp, we have here segment two special guest interview special guests.

[01:30:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:30:46] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if we have a special guest.

[01:30:48] [SPEAKER_03]: We have Dave with us.

[01:30:50] [SPEAKER_05]: He's pretty special.

[01:30:51] [SPEAKER_05]: I've been called that.

[01:30:53] [SPEAKER_03]: So, Dave, why don't you just to start with, why don't you recap?

[01:30:57] [SPEAKER_03]: So here's the thing.

[01:30:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Brad, you can play a joke on Celine if you want to do this.

[01:31:03] [SPEAKER_03]: So listen to this recap of why don't you tell the story, Dave, of what you did to me when

[01:31:07] [SPEAKER_03]: we went hiking and you tried to put rocks in my bag, but I was too smart to allow that.

[01:31:13] [SPEAKER_06]: First, that was never proven.

[01:31:15] [SPEAKER_06]: The fingerprints have not come back on those rocks officially.

[01:31:18] [SPEAKER_06]: Right.

[01:31:18] [SPEAKER_06]: And someone should never leave their bag with me and say, can I trust you with this bag?

[01:31:24] [SPEAKER_06]: Ever.

[01:31:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:31:26] [SPEAKER_03]: I picked my bag.

[01:31:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I went up to Zeeland and, oh no, not Zeeland, Galehead.

[01:31:30] [SPEAKER_03]: And then I came back down.

[01:31:31] [SPEAKER_03]: I picked my backpack up and I was like, why does this weigh 50 pounds?

[01:31:34] [SPEAKER_03]: And it didn't hit me at first.

[01:31:36] [SPEAKER_03]: And he had been down there watching the bags and he put two big boulders in my backpack.

[01:31:40] [SPEAKER_03]: So great.

[01:31:41] [SPEAKER_06]: He threw it on twice.

[01:31:42] [SPEAKER_06]: We thought we had them.

[01:31:43] [SPEAKER_06]: We really did.

[01:31:44] [SPEAKER_06]: He didn't even notice.

[01:31:45] [SPEAKER_06]: And then he said, why does it feel like there's rocks in here?

[01:31:48] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[01:31:48] [SPEAKER_06]: Probably because there are.

[01:31:50] [SPEAKER_06]: Quote, unquote.

[01:31:51] [SPEAKER_06]: There are.

[01:31:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Now, can you give your impression?

[01:31:53] [SPEAKER_03]: So there was the first time that we hiked together.

[01:31:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Would you hike again with me or was it too annoying?

[01:31:59] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.

[01:31:59] [SPEAKER_06]: I thought it was fine.

[01:32:01] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, you did the I'm a podcast guy thing and bounced between everybody and you spread

[01:32:05] [SPEAKER_06]: yourself around very nicely.

[01:32:07] [SPEAKER_06]: You worked the room.

[01:32:09] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes.

[01:32:09] [SPEAKER_06]: You were everywhere shaking hands, kissing babies, all those things.

[01:32:12] [SPEAKER_06]: And it was good.

[01:32:14] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I would.

[01:32:14] [SPEAKER_06]: I would.

[01:32:16] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[01:32:17] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, I wasn't planning on ever hiking with you again, but maybe I'll get back.

[01:32:20] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, if you ask me, I'll say no, but I would say it here that, yeah, I would.

[01:32:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Now, the question is, would you guys bushwhack together now that you're a bushwhacker, Mike?

[01:32:29] [SPEAKER_03]: I would.

[01:32:30] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I'm up for anything.

[01:32:31] [SPEAKER_03]: So Dave's a fun guy to hike with.

[01:32:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I give him a hard time, but it was a good day.

[01:32:34] [SPEAKER_03]: It was a very good day.

[01:32:35] [SPEAKER_03]: We did.

[01:32:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we did the group hike thing for the 48 Peaks.

[01:32:40] [SPEAKER_03]: And I think we hiked with 10 people.

[01:32:42] [SPEAKER_03]: We had Eric Todd Sweet, the legendary Eric Todd Sweet with us as well.

[01:32:46] [SPEAKER_03]: But I mostly hung out with Dave and Julie for the day.

[01:32:49] [SPEAKER_03]: We did talk with some other people, but it was a good hike.

[01:32:52] [SPEAKER_06]: He's excellent at announcing too.

[01:32:54] [SPEAKER_06]: If you quietly say, excuse me, I have to step off the trail because I don't know, you

[01:32:57] [SPEAKER_06]: have certain things that your name implies because you have certain functions that just,

[01:33:01] [SPEAKER_06]: that's how you're built.

[01:33:03] [SPEAKER_06]: And he announces it to everybody.

[01:33:05] [SPEAKER_06]: There's nothing uncomfortable coming out of the woods after that at all.

[01:33:08] [SPEAKER_06]: At all.

[01:33:09] [SPEAKER_06]: None.

[01:33:09] [SPEAKER_06]: That's true.

[01:33:10] [SPEAKER_06]: None.

[01:33:10] [SPEAKER_03]: So Dave's Instagram handle is Dave Shits in the Woods.

[01:33:13] [SPEAKER_03]: And when we were hiking about a mile in, he's like, I got to go into the woods.

[01:33:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll meet you guys.

[01:33:18] [SPEAKER_03]: And I was like, Dave actually does shit in the woods.

[01:33:21] [SPEAKER_03]: And I just announced it to everybody.

[01:33:23] [SPEAKER_03]: And then when he came rolling back, it was a little embarrassing for him, but it was fine.

[01:33:27] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I'm over it.

[01:33:28] [SPEAKER_06]: I have no therapist.

[01:33:29] [SPEAKER_06]: That'll be okay.

[01:33:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:33:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Now, have you been out, um, have you been out, uh, pursuing the hundred or the 500 highest

[01:33:37] [SPEAKER_03]: or whatever?

[01:33:37] [SPEAKER_06]: Uh, yeah, I'm narrowing down the a hundred.

[01:33:39] [SPEAKER_06]: I got three left on the a hundred.

[01:33:40] [SPEAKER_06]: Um, I just did Lowell.

[01:33:42] [SPEAKER_06]: Um, I don't even remember what it was.

[01:33:44] [SPEAKER_06]: It's been such a long summer.

[01:33:45] [SPEAKER_06]: Um, haven't gotten out much, but it was Lowell probably what, three weeks ago, something

[01:33:49] [SPEAKER_06]: like that.

[01:33:50] [SPEAKER_06]: Trail was closed.

[01:33:51] [SPEAKER_06]: The road's closed.

[01:33:51] [SPEAKER_06]: Sorey river's closed.

[01:33:53] [SPEAKER_06]: So biked up to the trailhead and I found a good ridge, walked up, found pretty good path

[01:33:58] [SPEAKER_06]: right up to the top for the most part.

[01:34:00] [SPEAKER_06]: Um, came off the wrong side as usual because I'm an idiot and realized where I was, bushwhacked

[01:34:06] [SPEAKER_06]: back, picked up the herd path and just shot straight down.

[01:34:08] [SPEAKER_06]: The woods are gorgeous out there.

[01:34:10] [SPEAKER_06]: A lot of old logging roads, ton of logging camps out that way.

[01:34:13] [SPEAKER_05]: I bailed, I bailed on you on that one.

[01:34:15] [SPEAKER_06]: You did.

[01:34:16] [SPEAKER_06]: You did.

[01:34:16] [SPEAKER_06]: I didn't want to mention it, but since we're here, you know, that, that did happen.

[01:34:23] [SPEAKER_06]: Um, it was, but you had like 15 rescues that day.

[01:34:26] [SPEAKER_06]: Something like that.

[01:34:27] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[01:34:29] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[01:34:29] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, well.

[01:34:29] [SPEAKER_15]: Shame, shame, shame.

[01:34:31] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, well, yeah, there you go.

[01:34:33] [SPEAKER_06]: That's an Aurora shame draw.

[01:34:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Nice.

[01:34:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Nice going to Aurora.

[01:34:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:34:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Speaking of rescues, we have, um, we have seven rescues to cover here.

[01:34:41] [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm assuming Stomp was on half of those.

[01:34:43] [SPEAKER_06]: Captain transition.

[01:34:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Right?

[01:34:47] [SPEAKER_06]: Wow.

[01:34:48] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[01:34:48] [SPEAKER_03]: That was nice.

[01:34:49] [SPEAKER_03]: So you want to get into the rescues?

[01:34:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, let's do it.

[01:35:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[01:35:33] [SPEAKER_03]: So I don't think these are in order of date, but let's go with the first one here.

[01:35:37] [SPEAKER_03]: So this is the Caps Ridge Trail.

[01:35:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Celine, have you been on the Caps Ridge Trail before?

[01:35:42] [SPEAKER_17]: Yes.

[01:35:42] [SPEAKER_17]: I love that.

[01:35:43] [SPEAKER_03]: So that, that's one of your T25s that you've done already then.

[01:35:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:35:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:35:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:35:47] [SPEAKER_03]: That's a good one.

[01:35:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, so I haven't been on it in the last couple of years, but this, this happened on Wednesday,

[01:35:53] [SPEAKER_03]: July 24th.

[01:35:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Two Canadian hikers attempted to hike the Caps Ridge Trail.

[01:35:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, they, they were basically doing an out and back.

[01:36:03] [SPEAKER_03]: So around 540, the hikers called 911 for assistance.

[01:36:07] [SPEAKER_03]: They said that they were lost out of water and tired.

[01:36:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, the call was transferred from a conservation officer and it was decided they had multiple

[01:36:17] [SPEAKER_03]: hours of daylight left at the hike and it was warm out.

[01:36:21] [SPEAKER_03]: The hikers should continue down themselves in an attempt to self rescue by nine o'clock.

[01:36:27] [SPEAKER_03]: They had called and said that they were not able to continue without assistance.

[01:36:32] [SPEAKER_03]: One of them had become ill and, um, eventually three conservation officers were called out and

[01:36:38] [SPEAKER_03]: two of them hiked up to assess the conditions.

[01:36:40] [SPEAKER_03]: And the hikers were given food and water and headlamps and heading down.

[01:36:44] [SPEAKER_03]: So 60 year old hiker and a 46 year old hiker.

[01:36:48] [SPEAKER_15]: So sounds like hiking with you too.

[01:36:54] [SPEAKER_03]: So I don't know.

[01:36:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I mean, maybe, I don't know.

[01:36:59] [SPEAKER_03]: It just doesn't seem very, very hard to stay on that particular trail.

[01:37:06] [SPEAKER_07]: Hmm.

[01:37:07] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes and no.

[01:37:08] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, it gets really confusing at the top.

[01:37:12] [SPEAKER_03]: It does.

[01:37:13] [SPEAKER_03]: It does get a little confusing because there's a bunch of cross trails, but, um, maybe that's

[01:37:18] [SPEAKER_03]: where they got in trouble was coming down from up top.

[01:37:20] [SPEAKER_03]: They were trying to figure out where to connect with Caps Ridge and they ended up going somewhere

[01:37:24] [SPEAKER_03]: else, but all's well that ends well in this one.

[01:37:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[01:37:27] [SPEAKER_03]: So 60 year old and 46 year old.

[01:37:30] [SPEAKER_03]: So this next one's from Saturday, July 27th.

[01:37:34] [SPEAKER_15]: I am calling for the shame drop.

[01:37:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Shame.

[01:37:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, Saturday, the 27th fishing game was notified of a hiker.

[01:37:44] [SPEAKER_03]: This is on Tuckerman Ravine trail.

[01:37:46] [SPEAKER_03]: So 26 year old hiker from Michigan had summited Mount Washington the day before.

[01:37:52] [SPEAKER_03]: So he must've been camping out and he was with four other hikers.

[01:37:55] [SPEAKER_03]: They made it to Hermit Lake shelter.

[01:37:57] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you're basically done by the time you get to Hermit Lake shelter, but, um, he

[01:38:00] [SPEAKER_03]: was able to spend the night in an attempt to recover.

[01:38:03] [SPEAKER_03]: He couldn't hold down any food or water and became weaker.

[01:38:06] [SPEAKER_03]: So he might've had some kind of a bug.

[01:38:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, the group did attempt to make it out without further assistance, but they couldn't go very

[01:38:14] [SPEAKER_03]: far and he wasn't able to continue under his own power.

[01:38:18] [SPEAKER_03]: So again, AMC steps in, um, like they were stepping in for the dogs.

[01:38:22] [SPEAKER_03]: The caretaker responded to the call and with the assistance of his hiking companions, they

[01:38:27] [SPEAKER_03]: were able to get him in a litter and get them back up the trail of the shelter.

[01:38:31] [SPEAKER_03]: And then fishing game, we're able to take an ATV up the Sherburn ski trail and get him

[01:38:37] [SPEAKER_03]: out.

[01:38:37] [SPEAKER_03]: So the Sherburn connects pretty close there.

[01:38:39] [SPEAKER_03]: So they were able to get the, the side by side out and get them, get them to the Gorham,

[01:38:44] [SPEAKER_03]: um, ambulance service and then get them to Anderscoggin Valley hospital.

[01:38:48] [SPEAKER_03]: So all's well there.

[01:38:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Yep.

[01:38:52] [SPEAKER_03]: This next one was Champney Falls trail stomp.

[01:38:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I actually saw this one come over the internet.

[01:38:59] [SPEAKER_03]: There's a, like a Facebook group that I'm on that, that was talking about this particular

[01:39:04] [SPEAKER_03]: one.

[01:39:04] [SPEAKER_03]: So 57 year old hiker from Maine, they were on Champney Falls around 10 50 or 11 o'clock.

[01:39:11] [SPEAKER_03]: They were right below the summit and this hiker fell and injured her wrist.

[01:39:16] [SPEAKER_03]: So the husband called 911 for assistance.

[01:39:19] [SPEAKER_03]: That's pretty good because if you're anywhere down lower on Champney Falls, there's no 911.

[01:39:23] [SPEAKER_03]: There's no cell connection there.

[01:39:26] [SPEAKER_03]: So if you are injured on Champney Falls stomp anywhere above where the falls are, you really

[01:39:32] [SPEAKER_03]: have to just hike up to the summit to get cell connection.

[01:39:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Hiking back down to the kink is going to do you no good because there's no cell connection

[01:39:39] [SPEAKER_03]: there.

[01:39:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:39:40] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[01:39:41] [SPEAKER_05]: It's a total dead zone.

[01:39:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Yep.

[01:39:43] [SPEAKER_03]: So I guess the call came in at 11.

[01:39:47] [SPEAKER_03]: The Forest Service got there.

[01:39:52] [SPEAKER_03]: They were able to splint her wrist and I guess it was some other good Samaritan hikers and they

[01:39:59] [SPEAKER_03]: were able to get her out around 345.

[01:40:02] [SPEAKER_03]: So all's well with that one.

[01:40:06] [SPEAKER_03]: And this next one stomp is in your neck of the woods, Greeley Ponds.

[01:40:10] [SPEAKER_03]: That is right.

[01:40:11] [SPEAKER_05]: There's two ways to get to this one, either from Waterville or from the kink.

[01:40:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:40:17] [SPEAKER_03]: So this was a 35-year-old Massachusetts man who had fallen on wet, slippery mud along

[01:40:23] [SPEAKER_03]: the trail.

[01:40:24] [SPEAKER_03]: He was carrying his young son.

[01:40:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Holy crap.

[01:40:27] [SPEAKER_03]: So this is the guy's carrying his son across a wooden board section of the trail.

[01:40:32] [SPEAKER_03]: He lost his balance and fell.

[01:40:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I read about this and the first thing I thought about is did he protect his kid?

[01:40:38] [SPEAKER_03]: And luckily he did.

[01:40:40] [SPEAKER_03]: The son was uninjured, but the father received some injury.

[01:40:45] [SPEAKER_03]: So that's the right thing to do if you're falling and if you're carrying your kid and you're

[01:40:48] [SPEAKER_03]: falling, you protect the kid and then you get injured.

[01:40:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Agreed.

[01:40:53] [SPEAKER_03]: That's what fatherhood's all about.

[01:40:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Correct.

[01:40:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Yep.

[01:40:58] [SPEAKER_03]: So the hikers from Foxborough, Mass.

[01:41:01] [SPEAKER_03]: And I guess there was a good Samaritan that passed by.

[01:41:05] [SPEAKER_03]: They were able to get a call out and send a rescue text to 911 and then conservation officers

[01:41:13] [SPEAKER_03]: got there.

[01:41:13] [SPEAKER_03]: So the call came in at noon.

[01:41:16] [SPEAKER_03]: They were able to get to him by one o'clock and then he was out of the trailhead by two

[01:41:20] [SPEAKER_03]: o'clock.

[01:41:21] [SPEAKER_03]: So not bad.

[01:41:21] [SPEAKER_03]: They had to take him on the ambulance ride to Concord Hospital, but all's well that ends

[01:41:26] [SPEAKER_03]: well.

[01:41:27] [SPEAKER_03]: And most importantly, he did not injure his kid.

[01:41:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Dave, would you have injured your kid as you were in that situation or would you have

[01:41:34] [SPEAKER_03]: protected the child?

[01:41:36] [SPEAKER_06]: Which kid?

[01:41:37] [SPEAKER_03]: It depends.

[01:41:38] [SPEAKER_03]: You tell me.

[01:41:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Actually, that's true with me too.

[01:41:43] [SPEAKER_02]: My little daughter, she may go in the mud.

[01:41:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Just saying.

[01:41:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah.

[01:41:48] [SPEAKER_03]: So, so Lynn, are you, do you have siblings?

[01:41:51] [SPEAKER_03]: That's too funny.

[01:41:52] [SPEAKER_17]: No, we're both only children.

[01:41:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Both only children.

[01:41:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Really?

[01:41:56] [SPEAKER_03]: You guys must be great at sharing.

[01:41:58] [SPEAKER_03]: So.

[01:41:59] Yeah.

[01:42:02] [SPEAKER_06]: Because if you don't break them up, Mike, I will.

[01:42:06] [SPEAKER_02]: You don't want to, no, such a lovely, good looking couple.

[01:42:09] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not going to break them up.

[01:42:10] [SPEAKER_06]: No, I'm teasing.

[01:42:10] [SPEAKER_06]: The questions you were asking earlier were definitely argumentative.

[01:42:14] [SPEAKER_06]: Look, Brad already left.

[01:42:17] [SPEAKER_06]: He walked away.

[01:42:18] [SPEAKER_06]: He's already going west.

[01:42:21] [SPEAKER_06]: Left without you.

[01:42:22] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[01:42:23] [SPEAKER_02]: They were horrified by Aurora.

[01:42:25] [SPEAKER_06]: I think that's what happened.

[01:42:27] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, she's such a sweetie.

[01:42:29] [SPEAKER_06]: He's Googling her right now.

[01:42:31] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[01:42:32] [SPEAKER_03]: So this next one's July 28th.

[01:42:34] [SPEAKER_03]: This is the time of the year, folks, too.

[01:42:36] [SPEAKER_03]: So for people that think like, oh my God, there's so many of these rescues.

[01:42:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Like when we look at the data on this, like you see July and August and September are when

[01:42:43] [SPEAKER_03]: you have these weekends or these weeks periods where you'll get like seven or eight of these

[01:42:48] [SPEAKER_03]: rescues.

[01:42:48] [SPEAKER_03]: And a lot of them are just slip and falls at this point.

[01:42:50] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's not, not that big of a deal.

[01:42:53] [SPEAKER_03]: But this, this next one again is a Sabbath day falls.

[01:42:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, on the Sabbath day Brook trail.

[01:43:00] [SPEAKER_03]: So this one's pretty close to the trailhead, I think.

[01:43:02] [SPEAKER_03]: So 55 year old hiker from Leesburg, Virginia left the trailhead around 3 p.m.

[01:43:09] [SPEAKER_03]: injured herself about a quarter mile from the trailhead.

[01:43:12] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, I don't even know if this counts as a hike.

[01:43:14] [SPEAKER_03]: This is just like a tourist.

[01:43:16] [SPEAKER_03]: That's a road.

[01:43:17] [SPEAKER_05]: True.

[01:43:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[01:43:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[01:43:18] [SPEAKER_03]: I think that's just a, but anyway, they, they slipped and, um, they needed help from Conway

[01:43:23] [SPEAKER_03]: fire department.

[01:43:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Again, anywhere on the conky of the, the kank, you have to remember that, um, there's

[01:43:29] [SPEAKER_03]: no, not a lot of cell connection out there.

[01:43:30] [SPEAKER_03]: So be careful when you're out there.

[01:43:32] [SPEAKER_05]: Conk Amagus.

[01:43:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Conk.

[01:43:34] [SPEAKER_05]: The kank.

[01:43:36] [SPEAKER_05]: The conk.

[01:43:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Did you drive the conk this weekend?

[01:43:39] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes.

[01:43:40] [SPEAKER_05]: Lovey.

[01:43:42] [SPEAKER_05]: All right.

[01:43:43] [SPEAKER_03]: July 30th.

[01:43:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Uh, SOS alert was received by a Garmin inReach device.

[01:43:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, this was off of, where's this person?

[01:43:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Franconia Brook trail.

[01:43:55] [SPEAKER_03]: So 29 year old, um, hiker.

[01:43:58] [SPEAKER_03]: She was not able to continue hiking without being carried.

[01:44:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Oops.

[01:44:02] [SPEAKER_05]: Don't worry about it.

[01:44:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm just having a little drop sees over here.

[01:44:06] [SPEAKER_03]: He's not invited back.

[01:44:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Like an album cover.

[01:44:08] [SPEAKER_06]: I didn't even do it.

[01:44:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Sorry about that.

[01:44:11] [SPEAKER_03]: So help me out here, Dave or Stomp with the, it's on the Franconia Brook trail, but the

[01:44:19] [SPEAKER_03]: AMC caretaker from the Garfield shelter was asked to respond.

[01:44:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Is that even close to the Franconia Brook trail?

[01:44:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[01:44:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, for sure.

[01:44:28] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[01:44:28] [SPEAKER_05]: So the tent site is what?

[01:44:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Point three from the Garfield junction to the summit.

[01:44:36] [SPEAKER_05]: So the Franconia Falls is after the tent site and well before the Galehead hut.

[01:44:45] [SPEAKER_06]: That's Garfield though.

[01:44:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:44:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.

[01:44:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm, I'm, I'm confused with the geography here, but anyway, it's a 29 year old, um, hiker.

[01:44:56] [SPEAKER_03]: So I guess the hiker was located 5.4 miles from the nearest trailhead conservation officers

[01:45:03] [SPEAKER_03]: along with volunteers from PEMI search and rescue.

[01:45:06] [SPEAKER_03]: And, um, in some of the caretakers were able to respond to the Garfield trail off of Gale

[01:45:14] [SPEAKER_03]: River road in Bethlehem.

[01:45:15] [SPEAKER_03]: By five o'clock, first rescue was started up the trail and reached the injured hiker around

[01:45:19] [SPEAKER_03]: eight.

[01:45:20] [SPEAKER_03]: After assessing the injuries, it was decided that, um, the hiker would be able to start

[01:45:25] [SPEAKER_03]: hiking towards the trailhead with assistance.

[01:45:27] [SPEAKER_03]: And by about 11 o'clock, they were able to reach an ATV and transport the hiker for the

[01:45:32] [SPEAKER_03]: last two miles.

[01:45:35] [SPEAKER_03]: So by 1145, the hiker got out.

[01:45:37] [SPEAKER_03]: So that's a long day, three o'clock call.

[01:45:40] [SPEAKER_03]: And they didn't get out till midnight.

[01:45:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:45:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Hikers from Woonsocket, Rhode Island stomp.

[01:45:46] [SPEAKER_05]: Yep.

[01:45:47] [SPEAKER_05]: So I just want to, I think that's pretty much well past that incredibly steep and wet cascade

[01:45:53] [SPEAKER_05]: coming off Garfield.

[01:45:55] [SPEAKER_05]: I think that trailhead junction is past that, which is as hard as it gets in terms of hiking,

[01:46:05] [SPEAKER_05]: quote unquote.

[01:46:07] [SPEAKER_05]: It's pretty sketchy.

[01:46:09] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.

[01:46:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, and then the last but not least here, we've got a, um, rescue that happened on July

[01:46:16] [SPEAKER_03]: 30th, 620 PM.

[01:46:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, this was on the summit of Dickey Mountain Stomp.

[01:46:22] [SPEAKER_03]: So this is in your backyard.

[01:46:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Solo hiker had slipped and fell.

[01:46:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Uh, she tried to walk on her own, was unable to do so.

[01:46:28] [SPEAKER_03]: So she called 911.

[01:46:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Hiker was from Stockton, California.

[01:46:31] [SPEAKER_03]: She had been in the area.

[01:46:33] [SPEAKER_03]: She's a musician playing in the New Hampshire Music Festival for the summer.

[01:46:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Campton Thornton Fire Department, uh, made it to the hiker's location around 745.

[01:46:42] [SPEAKER_03]: They stabilized and assessed her condition and then took her out to Lakes Region.

[01:46:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, it was Lakes Region Search and Rescue Team arrived.

[01:46:49] [SPEAKER_03]: And then they got her out, um, I guess using Waterville Valley Public Safety Department, um,

[01:46:56] [SPEAKER_03]: at the trailhead.

[01:46:57] [SPEAKER_03]: And then they got her out around 10 PM.

[01:46:59] [SPEAKER_03]: So yeah.

[01:47:00] [SPEAKER_03]: All's well that ends well.

[01:47:01] [SPEAKER_03]: But that's, that's another long night.

[01:47:03] [SPEAKER_05]: Well, you have 30 people in the PEMI.

[01:47:06] [SPEAKER_05]: So Lakes Region came up north here to help out Dickey.

[01:47:10] [SPEAKER_05]: Makes complete, same day, same time frame.

[01:47:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:47:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:47:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:47:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Cause there's two rescues going on at the same time.

[01:47:16] [SPEAKER_03]: So they happen in clusters.

[01:47:18] [SPEAKER_03]: So, um, Celine, you made it.

[01:47:20] [SPEAKER_03]: I appreciate it.

[01:47:21] [SPEAKER_03]: And, um, thank you so much for you and Brad joining us.

[01:47:24] [SPEAKER_03]: And we're very excited to watch your adventures in the fifth wheeler.

[01:47:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, and then Dave, thank you for joining us.

[01:47:31] [SPEAKER_06]: You don't mean that.

[01:47:35] [SPEAKER_03]: I have to be polite.

[01:47:36] [SPEAKER_05]: So, um, just one other thing here.

[01:47:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes.

[01:47:42] [SPEAKER_15]: Thank God that is over.

[01:47:44] [SPEAKER_15]: Two hours of my computer life.

[01:47:46] [SPEAKER_15]: I will never get back.

[01:47:50] [SPEAKER_05]: And listen, when this, when this comes out,

[01:47:53] [SPEAKER_05]: the Perseid meteor showers of this weekend.

[01:47:55] [SPEAKER_05]: So August 11th and 12th.

[01:47:57] [SPEAKER_05]: So if you're out hiking, you have good weather,

[01:47:59] [SPEAKER_05]: get out, get up on the peaks at night and, uh,

[01:48:02] [SPEAKER_05]: you're going to enjoy a hell of a show.

[01:48:04] [SPEAKER_05]: Perseids are always fantastic.

[01:48:07] [SPEAKER_05]: So that's all.

[01:48:08] [SPEAKER_03]: That's good.

[01:48:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Good.

[01:48:09] [SPEAKER_03]: And then you guys do not leave to go West until you've completed the terrifying 25 and

[01:48:14] [SPEAKER_03]: the 52 with a view.

[01:48:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Keep us updated on it.

[01:48:17] [SPEAKER_03]: That's your motivation for sure.

[01:48:18] [SPEAKER_03]: And then, um, you know, we'll, we'll make the announcement.

[01:48:21] [SPEAKER_03]: You guys will get notable hikes of the week.

[01:48:23] [SPEAKER_03]: We promise.

[01:48:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Thank you.

[01:48:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[01:48:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Thank you guys very much for having us on the podcast.

[01:48:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[01:49:10] [SPEAKER_12]: Stomp,

[01:49:11] [SPEAKER_12]: get out there and crush some mega peaks.

[01:49:16] [SPEAKER_12]: Now covered in scratches,

[01:49:18] [SPEAKER_12]: blisters,

[01:49:19] [SPEAKER_12]: and bug bites.

[01:49:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Chris staff wanted to complete his most challenging day hike ever.

[01:49:24] [SPEAKER_11]: Fish and game officers say the hiker from Florida activated an emergency beacon yesterday

[01:49:29] [SPEAKER_11]: morning.

[01:49:30] [SPEAKER_11]: He was hiking along the Appalachian trail when the weather started to get worse.

[01:49:35] [SPEAKER_11]: Officials say the snow was piled up to three feet in some spots and there was a wind chill

[01:49:39] [SPEAKER_11]: of minus one degree.

[01:49:41] [SPEAKER_02]: And there's three words to describe this race.

[01:49:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Do we all know what they are?

[01:49:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Lieutenant James Neeland,

[01:49:50] [SPEAKER_00]: New Hampshire fish and game.

[01:49:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Louisiana,

[01:49:51] [SPEAKER_00]: thanks for being with us today.

[01:49:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for having me.

[01:49:54] [SPEAKER_00]: What are some of the most common mistakes you see people make when they're heading out

[01:49:57] [SPEAKER_00]: on the trails to hike here in New Hampshire?

[01:49:59] [SPEAKER_09]: It seems to me the most common is being unprepared.

[01:50:01] [SPEAKER_09]: And I think if they just simply visited a hike safe.com and got a list of the 10 essential

[01:50:06] [SPEAKER_09]: items and had those in their packs,

[01:50:07] [SPEAKER_09]: they probably would have no need to ever call us at all.

GET OUT THERE AND CRUSH SOME MEGA PEAKS!!!!
