[00:00:47] [SPEAKER_05]: Summits Forecast to anticipate weather conditions above treeline.

[00:00:52] [SPEAKER_05]: You should too!

[00:00:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Go to mountwashington.org or text FORECAST to 603-356-2137.

[00:01:07] [SPEAKER_05]: And here's your forecast for the weekend of September 14th.

[00:01:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Friday mostly in the clear under partly cloudy skies with a high in the mid 50s,

[00:01:16] [SPEAKER_05]: winds northwest at 15-30 mph.

[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Friday night in and out of the clouds early, trending towards mostly in the clear under

[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_05]: partly cloudy skies with a low in the mid 40s, winds northwest at 15-30 mph, possibly

[00:01:31] [SPEAKER_05]: becoming light and variable at times late.

[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Saturday mostly in the clear, trending towards in and out of the clouds under partly

[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_05]: cloudy skies with a slight chance of showers late, again the highs will be

[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_05]: becoming light and variable at times early.

[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_13]: Alright, we are live on episode 167, Stomp.

[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_13]: Congratulations.

[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_13]: Congratulations for what?

[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_13]: From making it to episode 167.

[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_11]: Appreciate that.

[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_13]: Such a random number, but hey I'll take it.

[00:03:25] [SPEAKER_13]: Hey, so just top of my head I wanted to ask you, so you put out a rail on Instagram

[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_13]: where you took a drive up to the Old Bridal Path and then they've redirected

[00:03:37] [SPEAKER_13]: the path, they've done some work there, it looks like they put in a bunch of stairs

[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_13]: and all that stuff so can you talk a little bit about what's the redirect on this path?

[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_05]: I was shocked.

[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_05]: It's extensive.

[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean it sits within the first .2 miles of the Old Bridal Path and Falling Waters

[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Trailhead so as opposed to walking up the wet, muddy, somewhat rocky path up

[00:04:02] [SPEAKER_05]: to the bridge, it veers to the left and it's a wide 6-8 foot flat paved, not paved

[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_05]: but it might as well be paved because it's flat as a board dirt with several stairs

[00:04:16] [SPEAKER_05]: that have been built and I gotta tell you I was shocked.

[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_05]: It's a lot of work that they put into this and I had no idea that it was going on.

[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_13]: It looks really nice.

[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, absolutely amazing.

[00:04:25] [SPEAKER_05]: So it takes you up to a new junction high point where you can go left to Old Bridal

[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_05]: and then right it continues on, a new section of new trail that leads over to the bridge.

[00:04:39] [SPEAKER_13]: Oh so this is not, I thought that this was just after you got to the split to Old Bridal

[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_13]: but this is the very beginning from Lafayette parking lot before you even get to the trail split

[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_05]: between Old Bridal and Falling Waters.

[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_05]: In fact it's a brand new, right from the Porta Potty's there.

[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it's right from the start.

[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_12]: Okay, alright well we'll check it out.

[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_13]: Not too many people fall there but eventually they are going to be working on the section

[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_13]: of Falling Waters that's problematic, right?

[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes, yes, that's in the works.

[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Probably I think they just put out their basic plan now and they're looking at

[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_05]: getting into that next year and the year after from what I understand.

[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_05]: But nice work.

[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Whoever put the time into that did a fantastic job.

[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_05]: It's beautiful.

[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_13]: Awesome.

[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_13]: Stomp, one other thing I had, I pulled the late note here.

[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_13]: Cat and dog safety has been in the news lately.

[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_13]: I'm not going to talk about why but I did see a video that I'm going to post on my,

[00:05:35] [SPEAKER_13]: on the show notes here.

[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_13]: I'm worried about your cats so Will, Stomp has a couple of cats.

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_13]: Daphne and then the executive assistant producer, Zylo.

[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_13]: So we're always worried about cat safety here.

[00:05:50] [SPEAKER_13]: So Stomp, I want to send this video to you.

[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_13]: Do you use those automatic litter sweeper things for the cats?

[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes, it's called me.

[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh so you get the old school stuff.

[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, every single day.

[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_05]: Like if I don't do it, it's a nightmare but I've seen those machines you're talking about.

[00:06:09] [SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, it's basically like, I would describe them as like a cement mixer, right?

[00:06:14] [SPEAKER_13]: They're like these things and then the cats go inside and then I think that like

[00:06:18] [SPEAKER_13]: it turns around and it scoops the clumps up.

[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_13]: But there's one model that's out there.

[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_13]: I'm going to post it so that everyone can make sure their cats are.

[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_13]: This model is crazy because it has like an opening

[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_13]: and then the opening stays the way it is but then like the,

[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_13]: the wrap around basically makes it so that you literally could like chop a cat's head off.

[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_13]: Nice.

[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_13]: In the litter thing.

[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_13]: I got to get me one of those.

[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_13]: So I just want to get the word out to, yeah,

[00:06:50] [SPEAKER_13]: it's not bad if you're not a cat fan but I know we,

[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_13]: I feel like our listeners skew heavily towards cat ladies so

[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_13]: I just want to make sure that like they stay safe but this thing's crazy.

[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_13]: People are like posting reviews.

[00:07:02] [SPEAKER_13]: They're like my cat was killed by this litter machine.

[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_05]: Wow, that's crazy.

[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_05]: I've not heard of this issue but I'll keep a lookout.

[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah but as for us I just do it daily man.

[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_05]: And let me tell you those, those three cats are busy.

[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, yeah they are.

[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_13]: All right well Will, do you, you change your mind yet or are you okay staying with us?

[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm good, yeah let's keep this going.

[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_13]: All right.

[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Love to hear you guys chat.

[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_13]: So we're going to do a deep dive on you but I got to get this out of the way.

[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_13]: Danger Will Ross.

[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_13]: I've had to do it before.

[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_13]: What is it like growing up with a name that's like so iconic?

[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_13]: It must get old obviously.

[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_03]: So when I was really young I totally didn't understand it and I remember I had this,

[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_03]: my parents totally knew about it but I had the little robot and I had an ornament

[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_03]: version of it and it would say Danger Danger Will Robinson and I kept on asking,

[00:08:02] [SPEAKER_03]: I want one for my cousin Sam.

[00:08:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I want one that says Danger Danger Sam Robinson.

[00:08:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I just didn't get it but now of course I've seen it, I fully understand it and I get it a lot.

[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_13]: I'm trying to think, Stomp, does he look like a man?

[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_13]: When you were younger did you look like Billy Mummy?

[00:08:19] [SPEAKER_13]: The kid that played Will Robinson?

[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh gosh, I never really thought about that.

[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll have to look him up again.

[00:08:24] [SPEAKER_13]: Well he was a redhead but you're more of a blonde guy so I guess maybe not.

[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_13]: Yeah good call.

[00:08:29] [SPEAKER_13]: I just had to get that.

[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_05]: That's our early pop segment, pop culture segment.

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_13]: Right.

[00:08:36] [SPEAKER_13]: Were you going to bring it up if I didn't?

[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_05]: I was thinking about it like two days ago, it crossed my mind but I had totally forgotten

[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_05]: so good call.

[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_05]: It was worth mentioning.

[00:08:45] [SPEAKER_13]: Alright so welcome to episode 167 of the Sounds Like a Search and Rescue podcast.

[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_13]: So this week we're joined by Will Robinson.

[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_13]: So Will most recently completed a fastest known time for the New Hampshire 115 Hiking List,

[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_13]: completing a self-supported FKT in 19 days, 15 hours and 43 minutes.

[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_13]: This is a unique accomplishment combining hiking, driving, managing the logistics of all this

[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_13]: plus maintaining his nutrition and getting enough rest for an extended period of time while hiking

[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_13]: all of the 4,000 footers across Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York.

[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_13]: So Will's going to break down his story and go over some other adventures that he has had on the 115 list

[00:09:24] [SPEAKER_13]: and we'll talk some other stuff about hiking.

[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_13]: Plus we've got a Dodge to Lodge attempt that's going off this weekend.

[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_13]: We've got updates on new technology related to iPhones and Apple OS that's being released

[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_13]: that's going to allow expanded messaging via satellite.

[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_13]: There's mosquito-borne illnesses in New Hampshire.

[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_13]: We've got norovirus news.

[00:09:42] [SPEAKER_13]: Everyone's getting sick.

[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_13]: Some history fun facts from the 1876 White Mountain Guide written by Moses Sweetser.

[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_13]: And then Stomp is going to do a history segment on the Kangamangas.

[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_13]: Kangamangas Highway.

[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_13]: Kangamangas.

[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_13]: So Kangamangas.

[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_13]: I'm Mike.

[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_13]: And I'm Stomp.

[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_05]: Let's get started.

[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_13]: Alright, let's go into the Hiking Buddies spot here.

[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, let's do it.

[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_05]: This time we are doing some of the, they're tackling the 10 essentials over the next few weeks.

[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_05]: So here we go.

[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_12]: Hello.

[00:10:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Nice.

[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_04]: This is Ben Pease from Hiking Buddies.

[00:10:44] [SPEAKER_04]: We are a 501c3 nonprofit committed to reducing avoidable tragedies through education,

[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_04]: impactful projects and fostering a community of support.

[00:10:53] [SPEAKER_04]: You can find out more at hikingbuddies.org.

[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_04]: We wanted to say thank you to those who have supported our mission

[00:10:58] [SPEAKER_04]: and most importantly say thanks to those who speak up,

[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_04]: who ask questions and who are willing to provide guidance and assistance on the trails when needed.

[00:11:06] [SPEAKER_04]: You embody what it means to be a Hiking Buddy.

[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_04]: And now for all my newer hikers out there, here's this episode's Hiking Buddies Quick Tip.

[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_06]: Hiking essentials 1 and 2.

[00:11:19] [SPEAKER_06]: Navigation tools and a light source.

[00:11:21] [SPEAKER_06]: Navigation tools like map and compass with the skills to use them

[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_06]: or optional electronic devices like a PLB or a GPS etc.

[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_06]: A light source always carry two or more headlamps.

[00:11:33] [SPEAKER_06]: The number two reason for search and rescue call outs in the whites

[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_06]: is based on lack of light or a hiker being lost.

[00:11:40] [SPEAKER_06]: Your phone's flashlight is not enough.

[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Hi, Christina with White Mountain Endurance Coaching.

[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_01]: And I wanted to let you know that not only do I coach endurance athletes,

[00:11:55] [SPEAKER_01]: I also coach hikers and mountaineers.

[00:11:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I have plenty of experience in the white mountains

[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_01]: and would love to teach you how to start out whether you're a beginner,

[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_01]: if you're more advanced, give you some more skills to transition from hiking to trail running

[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_01]: and most of all teach you how to move safely in the mountains.

[00:12:12] [SPEAKER_01]: So whatever your goals are, whatever your experience is,

[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_01]: reach out coaching.christinafulsik.com.

[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd love to help you.

[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_13]: Very good, Tom.

[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_13]: Alright so I think I've hit my limit on talking so I'm done.

[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Alright let me talk for a little bit.

[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_05]: We have a new Lodge to Dodge attempt coming up this weekend.

[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't know if you will if you've heard about this but this is a track

[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_05]: I formulated in my sick mind a couple years ago

[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_05]: and Larsen O'Jalla has tackled it, Steve Mason

[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_05]: and now we have Judo96

[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_05]: who's, that's his Instagram handle, is tackling it this weekend

[00:12:47] [SPEAKER_05]: and he's doing, you said it right Mike, he's doing it Dodge to Lodge backwards

[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_05]: so he's starting at the Jodoge Lodge up and over Wildcats

[00:12:57] [SPEAKER_05]: all the way back to Ravine Lodge, 76 miles

[00:13:00] [SPEAKER_05]: and this is going to be kicking off.

[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_05]: Let's see I think it's starting on Saturday?

[00:13:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah it's supposed to start Friday, late Friday, Saturday

[00:13:10] [SPEAKER_05]: and then end Sunday morning from what I understand

[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_05]: and Larsen's going to be tagging along

[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_05]: and I wish Judo96 the best and good luck.

[00:13:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Looks like it's going to be a nice weather weekend

[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_05]: according to the forecast

[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_05]: and yeah pretty cool.

[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_13]: Are you going to meet him at the end?

[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm going to try, it's a really really busy weekend.

[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_05]: We've got a couple things cooking, like training

[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_05]: and this cog event Saturday so I don't know

[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_05]: but I'm hoping to for sure.

[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_13]: Alright, and then next up here Stomp

[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_13]: and for the listeners just a heads up

[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_13]: if I sound a little weird I've got this

[00:13:47] [SPEAKER_13]: I've had this dental surgery going on here

[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_13]: and I just got back from the dentist

[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_13]: I was telling Stomp I was literally screaming at the dentist office

[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_13]: I always laugh at people that are like

[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_13]: oh I have a phobia at the dentist

[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_13]: now I understand why.

[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_13]: So I had a periodontal thing

[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_13]: and my stitches were apparently so tight

[00:14:07] [SPEAKER_13]: that it was causing half of my face

[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_13]: to like anytime I moved

[00:14:11] [SPEAKER_13]: it was insanely painful

[00:14:13] [SPEAKER_13]: so I had to go in for like an emergency visit

[00:14:17] [SPEAKER_13]: and they took the stitches out

[00:14:18] [SPEAKER_13]: and it does feel better but

[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_13]: I may tap out for a little while Stomp

[00:14:22] [SPEAKER_13]: so you may have to do some actual work tonight.

[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, sounds good.

[00:14:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah I was worried

[00:14:28] [SPEAKER_05]: I wasn't sure if you were going to be here

[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_05]: or if I was going to fly solo

[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_05]: and make a mess of things or what

[00:14:33] [SPEAKER_05]: but this will be fine.

[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_05]: I couldn't leave you unattended so

[00:14:38] [SPEAKER_13]: but next up here we pulled another story

[00:14:40] [SPEAKER_13]: this is interesting Stomp

[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_13]: so Apple is coming out with the iPhone 16

[00:14:45] [SPEAKER_13]: and then in addition to that

[00:14:47] [SPEAKER_13]: there's a new Apple OS that's coming out

[00:14:49] [SPEAKER_13]: and essentially the

[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_13]: the reason we bring this up

[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_13]: is because it's now going to allow

[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_13]: it sounds like this is going to be free for now

[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_13]: but eventually it will be

[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_13]: they're going to get you hooked on it like drug dealers

[00:15:03] [SPEAKER_13]: and then you're going to have to pay for it

[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_13]: but this is satellite text messaging

[00:15:07] [SPEAKER_13]: now right now the

[00:15:09] [SPEAKER_13]: depending on the model you have

[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_13]: and the OS that you have

[00:15:12] [SPEAKER_13]: they do have SOS satellite text messaging

[00:15:16] [SPEAKER_13]: but this will allow you to just do text messaging

[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_13]: connected to satellites on your own

[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_13]: so this is something that I expected was going to be coming out soon

[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_13]: and now it sounds like it's a reality

[00:15:27] [SPEAKER_13]: so more and more you'll see people

[00:15:31] [SPEAKER_13]: unfortunately or fortunately

[00:15:33] [SPEAKER_13]: you'll see people relying on this

[00:15:35] [SPEAKER_13]: so when you don't have connectivity

[00:15:37] [SPEAKER_13]: if you can get to a high point

[00:15:38] [SPEAKER_13]: you're not blocked by trees

[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_13]: more and more you'll be able to see

[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_13]: this satellite technology will be accessible from cell phones

[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah I mean it's good news

[00:15:46] [SPEAKER_05]: it's just another tool to have

[00:15:47] [SPEAKER_05]: when you're out there on the hills

[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_05]: but I think it's important to remember

[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_05]: like you said don't rely on it

[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_05]: as your primary

[00:15:55] [SPEAKER_05]: if you're doing some big adventure

[00:15:57] [SPEAKER_05]: you always want to have something a little sturdier

[00:15:59] [SPEAKER_05]: I still prefer handheld methods

[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_05]: to communicate the larger

[00:16:03] [SPEAKER_05]: dedicated models

[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_05]: but this is good

[00:16:06] [SPEAKER_05]: a couple points if you are using your phone out in the cold

[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_05]: the cold weather's coming

[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_05]: you can try to keep that thing warm

[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_05]: because they do fail quickly in the cold weather

[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_05]: so you could stick an adhesive toe warmer on it

[00:16:18] [SPEAKER_05]: whatever

[00:16:20] [SPEAKER_05]: stick them in your

[00:16:21] [SPEAKER_05]: pockets closer to your

[00:16:24] [SPEAKER_05]: armpits

[00:16:25] [SPEAKER_05]: wherever the warmest parts of your body

[00:16:27] [SPEAKER_05]: the pulse points, keep them warm

[00:16:29] [SPEAKER_05]: but again it's a good

[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_05]: step forward in the right direction

[00:16:33] [SPEAKER_05]: just for communication out there

[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_13]: pretty soon we're going to be at the point where you can never escape

[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_05]: oh totally

[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah

[00:16:42] [SPEAKER_05]: in general though there have

[00:16:44] [SPEAKER_05]: been many more spots that have been

[00:16:47] [SPEAKER_05]: better for whatever reason

[00:16:49] [SPEAKER_05]: just for service in the whites

[00:16:50] [SPEAKER_05]: I've noticed over the last year or so

[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_05]: so

[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_05]: either way people are in good shape I think

[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_05]: yep

[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_13]: alright so moving on

[00:17:01] [SPEAKER_13]: it's mosquito season

[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_13]: right now there have been reports all

[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_13]: over the seacoast region

[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_13]: in southern New Hampshire of

[00:17:08] [SPEAKER_13]: E.E., West Nile virus and then I think

[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_13]: there's one other

[00:17:12] [SPEAKER_13]: common mosquito borne virus

[00:17:14] [SPEAKER_13]: that comes along so

[00:17:15] [SPEAKER_13]: I know there was one death of a 41 year old man

[00:17:20] [SPEAKER_13]: in

[00:17:20] [SPEAKER_13]: Hampstead, I think there's another guy in Kensington

[00:17:22] [SPEAKER_13]: which is the next town over from me that's

[00:17:25] [SPEAKER_13]: tested positive

[00:17:26] [SPEAKER_13]: just something you got to be aware of

[00:17:29] [SPEAKER_13]: I don't really have any

[00:17:30] [SPEAKER_13]: answer for this one

[00:17:32] [SPEAKER_13]: if you want to stay safe probably avoid being out around

[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_13]: dusk is where you want to

[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_05]: try to stay yeah the good news is the frost is

[00:17:38] [SPEAKER_05]: coming and hopefully

[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_05]: that will kick them off and we

[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_05]: won't have to worry about it for this season

[00:17:45] [SPEAKER_05]: same old story every season but it is

[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_05]: pretty prominent this year

[00:17:49] [SPEAKER_13]: yep spray DEET

[00:17:50] [SPEAKER_13]: I know in my town they already

[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_13]: tested in the town

[00:17:54] [SPEAKER_13]: forest they have a couple of test locations

[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_13]: where they have like these little boxes

[00:17:59] [SPEAKER_13]: and

[00:18:00] [SPEAKER_13]: it attracts the mosquitoes I see them

[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_13]: you're not supposed to touch them or anything

[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_13]: those test positive they'll

[00:18:06] [SPEAKER_13]: spray at night in town

[00:18:09] [SPEAKER_13]: got it got it

[00:18:11] [SPEAKER_13]: yep cool

[00:18:13] [SPEAKER_13]: alright moving to Hawaii here

[00:18:15] [SPEAKER_13]: I asked my daughter if she was familiar with this trail

[00:18:17] [SPEAKER_13]: she said it's in Kauai but she

[00:18:19] [SPEAKER_13]: had never hiked it

[00:18:21] [SPEAKER_13]: but the entire

[00:18:23] [SPEAKER_13]: Kuala Lua trail

[00:18:24] [SPEAKER_13]: is closed due to a norovirus

[00:18:26] [SPEAKER_13]: outbreak so Hawaii has these like trails

[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_13]: where they're very muddy

[00:18:30] [SPEAKER_13]: there's a lot of like ropes that are

[00:18:33] [SPEAKER_13]: fixed ropes that are shared by

[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_13]: hikers and then I don't know

[00:18:37] [SPEAKER_13]: what the previous situation is there but

[00:18:38] [SPEAKER_13]: my guess is like there's a lot of these

[00:18:40] [SPEAKER_13]: ropes that people are touching and exchanging

[00:18:44] [SPEAKER_13]: bodily fluids on so my guess

[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_13]: is that maybe some norovirus got

[00:18:47] [SPEAKER_13]: into one of these common

[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_13]: areas where people are using these ropes

[00:18:51] [SPEAKER_13]: or ladders or whatever

[00:18:52] [SPEAKER_13]: plus not to mention like you're stepping

[00:18:55] [SPEAKER_13]: on they have these metal things

[00:18:57] [SPEAKER_13]: in the in the

[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_13]: trails too so someone's stepping

[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_13]: on metal and then you're putting your hands on it

[00:19:03] [SPEAKER_13]: and it's just gross all around

[00:19:04] [SPEAKER_13]: so they're testing water soil and the environment

[00:19:07] [SPEAKER_13]: to determine what's going on

[00:19:09] [SPEAKER_13]: see if they can find the hot spot and then they'll open

[00:19:11] [SPEAKER_05]: it back up again. Right it's closed until the 19th

[00:19:13] [SPEAKER_05]: and they're cleaning all the

[00:19:15] [SPEAKER_05]: bathrooms and everything you can imagine

[00:19:17] [SPEAKER_05]: in there but yeah not a good situation

[00:19:21] [SPEAKER_13]: Will you ever dealt with this

[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_13]: in any of your long long hikes?

[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Norovirus? No I don't believe I have

[00:19:27] [SPEAKER_03]: actually I've gotten pretty lucky when it

[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_03]: comes to staying healthy on trail

[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_13]: Yeah me

[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_13]: either. Stomp have you ever gotten

[00:19:34] [SPEAKER_13]: sick on trail?

[00:19:37] Uhh

[00:19:38] [SPEAKER_13]: Yes. You're not the most cleanly guy I feel like

[00:19:40] [SPEAKER_05]: you probably have. The one

[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_05]: that comes to mind is I tried to

[00:19:45] [SPEAKER_05]: start the lodge to dodge

[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_05]: and it was in the middle of the night and I

[00:19:48] [SPEAKER_05]: was leaving Ravine Lodge

[00:19:50] [SPEAKER_05]: and I had crippling stomach pain and I had a bail

[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_05]: and like there's no way I can continue

[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_05]: so maybe I don't know

[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_05]: but yeah interesting

[00:20:00] [SPEAKER_13]: Alright Stomp so

[00:20:02] [SPEAKER_13]: you wanted to plug an event here? Yes

[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_05]: we got some news from the Waterville Athletic

[00:20:06] [SPEAKER_05]: and Improvement Association

[00:20:08] [SPEAKER_05]: they're having a solo

[00:20:10] [SPEAKER_05]: wilderness first aid class so when

[00:20:12] [SPEAKER_05]: hiking accidents can happen. Listen to

[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_05]: this podcast have you wondered what you would

[00:20:16] [SPEAKER_05]: do if you came upon an injured

[00:20:18] [SPEAKER_05]: hiker or if you and your

[00:20:20] [SPEAKER_05]: hiking buddy got injured? Be

[00:20:22] [SPEAKER_05]: prepared to help yourself or someone else

[00:20:24] [SPEAKER_05]: The solo wilderness first aid class is being offered

[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Saturday November 2nd and 3rd

[00:20:28] [SPEAKER_05]: in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire

[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_05]: So we will give you the links but to

[00:20:32] [SPEAKER_05]: register or learn more

[00:20:34] [SPEAKER_05]: you can email

[00:20:36] [SPEAKER_05]: wvaia trails

[00:20:38] [SPEAKER_05]: and the number 2

[00:20:39] [SPEAKER_05]: wvaia trails2

[00:20:41] [SPEAKER_05]: at gmail.com for more information

[00:20:44] [SPEAKER_05]: Pretty cool

[00:20:45] [SPEAKER_13]: Awesome we will put that in the show notes

[00:20:47] [SPEAKER_13]: and then you had

[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_13]: something else here Stomp about a

[00:20:51] [SPEAKER_05]: seafood market. Oh yeah I just want to

[00:20:54] [SPEAKER_05]: let people know local interest I finally got into

[00:20:56] [SPEAKER_05]: the old Woodpeckers

[00:20:58] [SPEAKER_05]: fondly named after our studio here

[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_05]: as we do

[00:21:01] [SPEAKER_05]: It's a seafood place now and it's

[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_05]: fresh seafood so we went in and

[00:21:06] [SPEAKER_05]: I got a fish sandwich and

[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Mr Stomp got another fish plate

[00:21:10] [SPEAKER_05]: and the food was just absolutely

[00:21:12] [SPEAKER_05]: amazing so highly recommended

[00:21:14] [SPEAKER_05]: it's right on route 49 off of exit

[00:21:16] [SPEAKER_05]: 28 here in Campton

[00:21:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Berge Jr's seafood

[00:21:20] [SPEAKER_05]: highly recommended

[00:21:22] [SPEAKER_13]: That's perfect for you because you can just run down into

[00:21:24] [SPEAKER_13]: the market get some hat and cook it up

[00:21:26] [SPEAKER_05]: 5 minutes away. And this is right off

[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_05]: the boat so they make the trip to

[00:21:30] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't remember if it's

[00:21:32] [SPEAKER_05]: Gloucester or to Boston but I'll have to find

[00:21:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Maybe one of the listeners like Captain Chris

[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_05]: or something but it's fresh

[00:21:39] [SPEAKER_05]: Awesome stuff

[00:21:40] [SPEAKER_13]: Alright let's do a little White Mountains history

[00:21:44] [SPEAKER_10]: Stomp. Alright let's dive

[00:21:46] [SPEAKER_10]: into some White Mountains history

[00:21:48] [SPEAKER_10]: Shall we?

[00:21:50] [SPEAKER_13]: Will do you like the history of the White

[00:21:52] [SPEAKER_13]: Mountains are you a history nerd or are you going to

[00:21:54] [SPEAKER_03]: learn something from us? I think I'm going to learn something

[00:21:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm ashamed to say I don't know much about

[00:21:58] [SPEAKER_13]: the history. Okay alright

[00:22:00] [SPEAKER_13]: so let's start with the

[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_13]: probably the most important

[00:22:04] [SPEAKER_13]: meeting that occurred

[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_13]: in relation to the White Mountains

[00:22:08] [SPEAKER_13]: and this happened in January

[00:22:10] [SPEAKER_13]: of 1876 at the

[00:22:12] [SPEAKER_13]: Massachusetts Institute of Technology

[00:22:14] [SPEAKER_13]: In this meeting

[00:22:15] [SPEAKER_13]: it was about a hundred people. They put the

[00:22:18] [SPEAKER_13]: call out to interested parties

[00:22:20] [SPEAKER_13]: that were interested in exploring the mountains

[00:22:23] [SPEAKER_13]: so you had people that were

[00:22:24] [SPEAKER_13]: adventuring, you had people that were

[00:22:26] [SPEAKER_13]: into like plants

[00:22:28] [SPEAKER_13]: you had people in geology

[00:22:30] [SPEAKER_13]: all these smart people got together

[00:22:32] [SPEAKER_13]: and in that meeting in January

[00:22:34] [SPEAKER_13]: of 1876

[00:22:36] [SPEAKER_13]: they established the Appalachian Mountain

[00:22:38] [SPEAKER_13]: Club and the Appalachian

[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_13]: Mountain Club

[00:22:42] [SPEAKER_13]: was formed

[00:22:44] [SPEAKER_13]: in order to accelerate

[00:22:47] [SPEAKER_13]: the interest of

[00:22:49] [SPEAKER_13]: exploration of

[00:22:50] [SPEAKER_13]: the mountains of New England and the adjacent

[00:22:52] [SPEAKER_13]: regions for scientific and

[00:22:54] [SPEAKER_13]: artistic purposes

[00:22:56] [SPEAKER_13]: and also just to cultivate

[00:22:59] [SPEAKER_13]: an interest in geographical studies

[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_13]: so what they decided

[00:23:03] [SPEAKER_13]: in that meeting is they were going to split

[00:23:06] [SPEAKER_13]: the

[00:23:07] [SPEAKER_13]: Appalachian Mountain Club into

[00:23:09] [SPEAKER_13]: five separate groups

[00:23:11] [SPEAKER_13]: and those groups would have

[00:23:12] [SPEAKER_13]: separate charters

[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_13]: and where I got this from is

[00:23:16] [SPEAKER_13]: I've been reading this

[00:23:20] [SPEAKER_13]: 1876 guide

[00:23:21] [SPEAKER_13]: that was written by Moses

[00:23:23] [SPEAKER_13]: Sweetser. So Moses Sweetser was

[00:23:24] [SPEAKER_13]: like a very early like

[00:23:26] [SPEAKER_13]: he was almost like the Fromer's travel guide

[00:23:28] [SPEAKER_13]: person of like the late 1800s

[00:23:31] [SPEAKER_13]: born in Newbury Port

[00:23:32] [SPEAKER_13]: actually lived in my home where I live

[00:23:34] [SPEAKER_13]: in Amesbury for

[00:23:36] [SPEAKER_13]: some years and then worked in

[00:23:38] [SPEAKER_13]: Boston for Osgood Publishing Company

[00:23:41] [SPEAKER_13]: and then published

[00:23:42] [SPEAKER_13]: a lot of these books so he describes

[00:23:44] [SPEAKER_13]: in his very first chapter

[00:23:46] [SPEAKER_13]: of the 1876

[00:23:49] [SPEAKER_13]: guidebook this early

[00:23:51] [SPEAKER_13]: January meeting

[00:23:52] [SPEAKER_13]: that happened so he was basically kind

[00:23:54] [SPEAKER_13]: of reporting on this real time

[00:23:56] [SPEAKER_13]: so they broke the Appalachian Mountain Club

[00:23:58] [SPEAKER_13]: into five departments. They had natural

[00:24:00] [SPEAKER_13]: history which was

[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_13]: overseen by Dr. Sterrie Hunt

[00:24:04] [SPEAKER_13]: they had topography

[00:24:06] [SPEAKER_13]: which included the construction of maps

[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_13]: of the mountains and all

[00:24:10] [SPEAKER_13]: work necessary for that purpose

[00:24:12] [SPEAKER_13]: and this was overseen by Professor

[00:24:14] [SPEAKER_13]: C. Hitchcock

[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_13]: they had art which covered

[00:24:18] [SPEAKER_13]: the collection of views of the mountains

[00:24:20] [SPEAKER_13]: improving the prospects

[00:24:22] [SPEAKER_13]: here's an interesting one, improving

[00:24:24] [SPEAKER_13]: the prospects by removing obstructions

[00:24:27] [SPEAKER_13]: and then aiding in every way possible

[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_13]: the true love of mountain scenery so back

[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_13]: then they were thinking like let's cut some trees down to make

[00:24:32] [SPEAKER_13]: some views

[00:24:34] [SPEAKER_13]: then you had exploration which was

[00:24:36] [SPEAKER_13]: overseen by L.P.

[00:24:39] [SPEAKER_13]: Portales and that's related

[00:24:40] [SPEAKER_13]: to the formation of parties to visit the

[00:24:42] [SPEAKER_13]: more inaccessible points and

[00:24:45] [SPEAKER_13]: otherwise encouraging the opening

[00:24:46] [SPEAKER_13]: of new fields of labor

[00:24:48] [SPEAKER_13]: and then you had probably the most important group

[00:24:50] [SPEAKER_13]: which was improvements

[00:24:52] [SPEAKER_13]: which is overseen by

[00:24:54] [SPEAKER_13]: somebody by the name of Noel

[00:24:55] [SPEAKER_13]: and this person's in charge of making

[00:24:58] [SPEAKER_13]: the new paths and clearing old ones

[00:25:00] [SPEAKER_13]: building stones, logs

[00:25:02] [SPEAKER_13]: and brush camps and erecting

[00:25:04] [SPEAKER_13]: correct guide boards and other

[00:25:06] [SPEAKER_13]: work lending to make the mountains more

[00:25:08] [SPEAKER_13]: accessible so basically this improvements committee

[00:25:11] stomp

[00:25:11] [SPEAKER_13]: this was what

[00:25:13] [SPEAKER_13]: this was the department of the

[00:25:16] [SPEAKER_13]: Appalachian Mountain Club that in the early

[00:25:18] [SPEAKER_13]: 1900s was the group that

[00:25:20] [SPEAKER_13]: connected all of the

[00:25:21] [SPEAKER_13]: the Wannatlancet

[00:25:25] [SPEAKER_13]: Waterville section

[00:25:26] [SPEAKER_13]: to the Pemi

[00:25:28] [SPEAKER_13]: section up to the presidential

[00:25:30] [SPEAKER_13]: range they were the ones that built out

[00:25:32] [SPEAKER_13]: all those connections over time but

[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_13]: this was the early seeds of what would

[00:25:36] [SPEAKER_13]: become the people that

[00:25:38] [SPEAKER_13]: essentially built out the White Mounds as we

[00:25:40] [SPEAKER_13]: know it now

[00:25:43] [SPEAKER_13]: and then

[00:25:44] [SPEAKER_13]: one of the, one of Moses Sweetser's

[00:25:46] [SPEAKER_13]: collaborators was a

[00:25:48] [SPEAKER_13]: Professor Huntington so Huntington Ravine

[00:25:51] [SPEAKER_13]: is named after this guy

[00:25:52] [SPEAKER_13]: one of the benefits of being in this club

[00:25:54] [SPEAKER_13]: early was that if you could get

[00:25:56] [SPEAKER_13]: to the guy that was in charge of topography

[00:25:58] [SPEAKER_13]: you could get your name on some trails and some

[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_13]: mountains which is pretty cool

[00:26:03] [SPEAKER_13]: so in the book

[00:26:04] [SPEAKER_13]: they did something pretty cool stomp

[00:26:06] [SPEAKER_13]: Moses Sweetser and

[00:26:08] [SPEAKER_13]: Professor Huntington

[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_13]: they put an agreement together that they were going

[00:26:12] [SPEAKER_13]: to pick their top

[00:26:14] [SPEAKER_13]: five mountains

[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_13]: independently and then compare

[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_13]: what they

[00:26:20] [SPEAKER_13]: came up with

[00:26:21] [SPEAKER_13]: so I'll give you Huntington's

[00:26:24] [SPEAKER_13]: and this first one I'm not

[00:26:26] [SPEAKER_13]: I don't even know where this is

[00:26:27] [SPEAKER_13]: so Professor Huntington has Mount Prospect

[00:26:29] [SPEAKER_13]: which I think is down by your neck of the woods

[00:26:31] [SPEAKER_13]: that's Plymouth holding us

[00:26:33] [SPEAKER_13]: and then he's got Sandwich Dome

[00:26:37] [SPEAKER_13]: then he's got

[00:26:37] [SPEAKER_13]: Mount Washington, Mount Lafayette

[00:26:39] [SPEAKER_13]: and then Moosilake

[00:26:42] [SPEAKER_13]: and then Kiersar's

[00:26:43] [SPEAKER_13]: which is Kiersar's North

[00:26:45] [SPEAKER_05]: in your neck of the woods

[00:26:47] [SPEAKER_13]: yeah

[00:26:48] [SPEAKER_13]: and then there's an extensive

[00:26:51] [SPEAKER_13]: chapter on it in the book about how

[00:26:54] [SPEAKER_13]: Kiersar's spelled K-I-A-R-S-A-R-G-E

[00:26:57] [SPEAKER_13]: is the mountain in

[00:26:59] [SPEAKER_13]: North Conway that they're referencing

[00:27:02] [SPEAKER_13]: so again Huntington's got

[00:27:03] [SPEAKER_13]: Prospect, Sandwich Dome, Washington, Lafayette

[00:27:06] [SPEAKER_13]: Moosilake and Kiersar's

[00:27:08] [SPEAKER_13]: Sweetser has

[00:27:11] [SPEAKER_13]: Moosilake

[00:27:12] [SPEAKER_13]: Belknap, Kiersar's

[00:27:14] [SPEAKER_13]: Washington, Lafayette

[00:27:15] [SPEAKER_13]: and Chacora

[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_13]: so I think that's pretty good

[00:27:19] [SPEAKER_13]: oh yeah seems like an interesting distribution

[00:27:21] [SPEAKER_13]: so Moosilake

[00:27:24] [SPEAKER_13]: Kiersar's, Washington and Lafayette

[00:27:26] [SPEAKER_13]: all overlap

[00:27:27] [SPEAKER_05]: right

[00:27:31] [SPEAKER_13]: not bad and then there's a couple of other

[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_13]: things here stomped that I thought was

[00:27:35] [SPEAKER_13]: interesting

[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_13]: oh so if you wanted to stay

[00:27:40] [SPEAKER_13]: at the Crawford House

[00:27:41] [SPEAKER_13]: so the Crawford House had about

[00:27:43] [SPEAKER_13]: three or four hundred

[00:27:45] [SPEAKER_13]: people that could

[00:27:47] [SPEAKER_13]: stay there and

[00:27:49] [SPEAKER_13]: it cost you $4.50

[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_13]: a night which is the equivalent of

[00:27:54] [SPEAKER_13]: one dollar back then

[00:27:55] [SPEAKER_13]: equals $29.40

[00:27:57] [SPEAKER_13]: today so it's about $132

[00:27:59] [SPEAKER_13]: a night in

[00:28:01] [SPEAKER_13]: this, in money this

[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_13]: day and age to stay at the Crawford

[00:28:05] [SPEAKER_13]: House back then

[00:28:07] [SPEAKER_13]: and they had a post office

[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_13]: which was in a large central hall

[00:28:11] [SPEAKER_13]: which served to

[00:28:14] [SPEAKER_13]: tourists

[00:28:15] [SPEAKER_13]: and locals it had a barber shop

[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_13]: a bowling alley, a telegram office

[00:28:20] [SPEAKER_13]: and a large livery stable

[00:28:21] [SPEAKER_13]: and was lighted with gas

[00:28:23] [SPEAKER_13]: and it had constant

[00:28:25] [SPEAKER_13]: railroad and stage connections

[00:28:27] [SPEAKER_13]: basically it's like right where the Highland

[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_13]: Center exists now

[00:28:33] [SPEAKER_13]: I thought that was pretty cool stuff

[00:28:34] [SPEAKER_13]: oh yeah the history is so dense around

[00:28:37] here

[00:28:38] [SPEAKER_13]: yeah it's crazy to think about like

[00:28:40] [SPEAKER_13]: a hundred people in a room in MIT really

[00:28:42] [SPEAKER_13]: like set in motion

[00:28:44] [SPEAKER_13]: most of the development of

[00:28:46] [SPEAKER_13]: what we know today they built the maps

[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_13]: they did the guidebook

[00:28:50] [SPEAKER_13]: they did the trail building

[00:28:52] [SPEAKER_13]: the sign building all of that stuff sort of

[00:28:55] [SPEAKER_13]: comes together once you start

[00:28:56] [SPEAKER_13]: reading more about it. What book is this?

[00:28:59] [SPEAKER_13]: This is the

[00:29:01] [SPEAKER_13]: 1876

[00:29:02] [SPEAKER_13]: White Mountain

[00:29:05] [SPEAKER_13]: tour

[00:29:07] [SPEAKER_13]: tour guide I think

[00:29:08] [SPEAKER_13]: I'll put it in the show notes I'll link it

[00:29:10] [SPEAKER_13]: you can read the whole thing online

[00:29:17] [SPEAKER_13]: alright now where are we?

[00:29:18] [SPEAKER_13]: oh we got an update on

[00:29:20] [SPEAKER_13]: Reckless we got an event going on at Reckless

[00:29:22] [SPEAKER_05]: yes we were invited back

[00:29:25] [SPEAKER_05]: for their full conditions

[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_05]: release party

[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_05]: so in October

[00:29:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Mike, myself and

[00:29:33] [SPEAKER_05]: Ty will be going

[00:29:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Ty Gagney the author will be going to

[00:29:37] [SPEAKER_05]: the brewery itself to create

[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_05]: the brew the full conditions brew

[00:29:41] [SPEAKER_05]: that was the brainchild of Ty

[00:29:43] [SPEAKER_05]: and the Reckless crew

[00:29:45] [SPEAKER_05]: Steve and Ian and Marlena

[00:29:48] [SPEAKER_05]: and the

[00:29:49] [SPEAKER_05]: idea was originally to benefit

[00:29:51] [SPEAKER_05]: the New Hampshire Outdoor Council

[00:29:53] [SPEAKER_05]: I had no idea they were going to do this again but

[00:29:55] [SPEAKER_05]: they're having the release party again

[00:29:57] [SPEAKER_05]: and that will be

[00:30:00] [SPEAKER_05]: in November

[00:30:01] [SPEAKER_05]: November 16th

[00:30:03] [SPEAKER_05]: details to follow it will be in the

[00:30:05] [SPEAKER_05]: afternoon and we have a load of guests

[00:30:07] [SPEAKER_05]: lined up already we have people from

[00:30:09] [SPEAKER_05]: my Washington State Park the Cog

[00:30:12] [SPEAKER_05]: several others Ty

[00:30:13] [SPEAKER_05]: will be sitting in co-hosting with us

[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_05]: that evening it's going to be a great time

[00:30:17] [SPEAKER_05]: and again it's a benefit for the

[00:30:19] [SPEAKER_05]: New Hampshire Outdoor Council so we'll

[00:30:21] [SPEAKER_05]: keep you posted when the tickets go live

[00:30:23] [SPEAKER_05]: there's already a big

[00:30:25] [SPEAKER_05]: swell of interest for this one because last year was a

[00:30:27] [SPEAKER_05]: blast oh yeah Ken Bossie he'll be

[00:30:29] [SPEAKER_05]: back for his comedy bit he had

[00:30:31] [SPEAKER_05]: that place in Stitches

[00:30:32] [SPEAKER_05]: so very exciting times

[00:30:35] [SPEAKER_10]: we all know that

[00:30:37] [SPEAKER_10]: hiking a mountain can be hard at

[00:30:39] [SPEAKER_10]: times so here's a corny

[00:30:41] [SPEAKER_10]: dad joke to help you

[00:30:43] [SPEAKER_10]: get over it

[00:30:44] [SPEAKER_13]: now is the part of the show

[00:30:50] [SPEAKER_13]: where we do a dad joke

[00:30:51] [SPEAKER_13]: yeah go for it what you got

[00:30:54] [SPEAKER_13]: alright so

[00:30:55] [SPEAKER_13]: why did the little girl cross the playground

[00:30:59] [SPEAKER_13]: why?

[00:31:01] [SPEAKER_13]: to get to the other slide

[00:31:02] [SPEAKER_13]: oh god that's so bad

[00:31:06] [SPEAKER_13]: I got another one here why is history a sweet

[00:31:08] [SPEAKER_13]: subject?

[00:31:11] [SPEAKER_05]: sweet subject?

[00:31:12] [SPEAKER_13]: because it has a lot of dates

[00:31:14] [SPEAKER_13]: get it like dates the fruit

[00:31:17] [SPEAKER_13]: sweet

[00:31:18] [SPEAKER_13]: I get it

[00:31:20] [SPEAKER_13]: I think Danger Will Robinson was

[00:31:22] [SPEAKER_13]: funnier but

[00:31:25] [SPEAKER_02]: oh my god

[00:31:38] [SPEAKER_10]: hey what's that sound?

[00:31:40] [SPEAKER_10]: it must be time for the pop culture

[00:31:42] [SPEAKER_10]: segment with Mike and Stomp

[00:31:52] [SPEAKER_13]: alright so Stomp sometimes we do a little bit of pop

[00:31:54] [SPEAKER_13]: culture so we are not going to let the show

[00:31:56] [SPEAKER_13]: go by without giving a

[00:32:00] [SPEAKER_13]: I guess

[00:32:02] [SPEAKER_13]: a good memory or positive

[00:32:05] [SPEAKER_13]: memory of James Earl

[00:32:07] [SPEAKER_13]: Jones died 93

[00:32:08] [SPEAKER_13]: years old so this is the talented actor

[00:32:11] [SPEAKER_13]: who was the voice of Darth Vader

[00:32:12] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah yeah the voice

[00:32:14] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah the legend rest in

[00:32:17] [SPEAKER_05]: peace

[00:32:19] [SPEAKER_11]: this is cnn

[00:32:23] [SPEAKER_05]: let's not forget that one

[00:32:25] [SPEAKER_05]: but hey listen

[00:32:26] [SPEAKER_05]: also on the pop culture thing

[00:32:29] [SPEAKER_05]: Ty's book is coming out

[00:32:31] [SPEAKER_05]: soon and I

[00:32:33] [SPEAKER_05]: believe it's sometime in late November

[00:32:34] [SPEAKER_05]: so Ty Gagney we'll just mention

[00:32:36] [SPEAKER_05]: briefly he was kind enough

[00:32:38] [SPEAKER_05]: to give the podcast

[00:32:40] [SPEAKER_05]: an advance copy of the new

[00:32:43] [SPEAKER_05]: book and it's top secret we cannot

[00:32:45] [SPEAKER_05]: tell you the title we'll give you many

[00:32:47] [SPEAKER_05]: details but

[00:32:48] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm about halfway through

[00:32:50] [SPEAKER_05]: and I think this is probably one of his best

[00:32:52] [SPEAKER_05]: works yet it's the classic Ty

[00:32:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Gagney crescendo of events

[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_05]: and his

[00:32:58] [SPEAKER_05]: writing his mastery over

[00:33:01] [SPEAKER_05]: the whole genre

[00:33:02] [SPEAKER_05]: is just through the roof on this

[00:33:05] [SPEAKER_05]: book I'm so impressed there are places

[00:33:07] [SPEAKER_05]: I haven't been that we talk about a lot Mike

[00:33:09] [SPEAKER_05]: I've been there now having read

[00:33:11] [SPEAKER_05]: this book it's so detailed it's

[00:33:13] [SPEAKER_05]: just a really great great adventure

[00:33:15] [SPEAKER_05]: so far so it's going to be a really great exciting

[00:33:17] [SPEAKER_05]: time when that book is released

[00:33:19] [SPEAKER_13]: yeah it's got that you can't

[00:33:21] [SPEAKER_13]: put it down vibe for sure so

[00:33:22] [SPEAKER_13]: yeah it's I don't want to

[00:33:25] [SPEAKER_13]: say too much because I don't want to ruin anything

[00:33:27] [SPEAKER_13]: but it's people are going to be excited

[00:33:29] [SPEAKER_13]: it's great stuff awesome

[00:33:32] [SPEAKER_13]: alright stops so

[00:33:34] [SPEAKER_13]: I think this is the part of the show where we do a sponsor

[00:33:36] [SPEAKER_05]: is that right? Yeah you know what I'm going to do

[00:33:38] [SPEAKER_05]: Vow Clues here let's see what we have here

[00:33:40] [SPEAKER_05]: so does your backpack not provide enough ventilation?

[00:33:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Does your back sweat too much when

[00:33:45] [SPEAKER_05]: backpacking? As you know sweat

[00:33:46] [SPEAKER_05]: can be extremely uncomfortable on the trails

[00:33:48] [SPEAKER_05]: plus sweat is a serious risk

[00:33:51] [SPEAKER_05]: factor in both hot and cold climates

[00:33:53] [SPEAKER_05]: as your clothes get wet your core temperature

[00:33:54] [SPEAKER_05]: can dramatically fluctuate and this

[00:33:56] [SPEAKER_05]: can result in hypothermia heat exhaustion

[00:33:58] [SPEAKER_05]: and dehydration let's not forget

[00:34:00] [SPEAKER_05]: it's just very uncomfortable so today

[00:34:02] [SPEAKER_05]: is your lucky day because we have good news here

[00:34:04] [SPEAKER_05]: for you there's a piece of gear that

[00:34:06] [SPEAKER_05]: solves the sweat and ventilation problem

[00:34:08] [SPEAKER_05]: making your backpack more comfortable

[00:34:10] [SPEAKER_05]: Vow Clues Gear's Ultralight

[00:34:14] [SPEAKER_05]: this ultralight frame is a backpack

[00:34:16] [SPEAKER_05]: accessory that easily installs in your favorite

[00:34:18] [SPEAKER_05]: pack sizes 15 liters to 45

[00:34:21] [SPEAKER_05]: liters and creates a ventilating

[00:34:23] [SPEAKER_05]: airflow gap between you and

[00:34:24] [SPEAKER_05]: your pack it's also ultralight

[00:34:27] [SPEAKER_05]: weighing about 3 ounces

[00:34:28] [SPEAKER_05]: which is about a pair of socks, pure wool

[00:34:30] [SPEAKER_05]: socks so whether you're hiking

[00:34:32] [SPEAKER_05]: in hotter cold temps the ultralight

[00:34:34] [SPEAKER_05]: backpack ventilation frame from Vow Clues

[00:34:44] [SPEAKER_05]: use promo code slasher

[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_05]: to enjoy a five dollar discount

[00:34:49] [SPEAKER_05]: and let them know that Mike and Stomp sent you

[00:34:51] [SPEAKER_03]: it's not very often

[00:34:53] [SPEAKER_03]: that an ad draws me in but

[00:34:54] [SPEAKER_03]: I gotta say I hate a wet back

[00:34:57] [SPEAKER_03]: that does seem real nice

[00:34:59] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah especially with the

[00:35:00] [SPEAKER_05]: distances you're running

[00:35:02] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah

[00:35:05] [SPEAKER_11]: it does work

[00:35:06] [SPEAKER_13]: Will I um yeah

[00:35:07] [SPEAKER_13]: I can grab my backpack

[00:35:09] [SPEAKER_13]: and show you after the show what it's

[00:35:11] [SPEAKER_13]: but you don't even feel it and it works

[00:35:13] [SPEAKER_13]: especially when the wind gets between the pack

[00:35:16] [SPEAKER_13]: and your

[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_13]: back it really you know

[00:35:19] [SPEAKER_13]: I found like it has its

[00:35:21] [SPEAKER_13]: limits obviously if it's like crazy 100

[00:35:23] [SPEAKER_13]: degrees humid then you know it doesn't

[00:35:25] [SPEAKER_13]: always completely

[00:35:27] [SPEAKER_13]: keep you dry but for the most part I've

[00:35:29] [SPEAKER_13]: been very happy with it

[00:35:30] [SPEAKER_13]: yeah so I bet I'll show you after the show

[00:35:41] [SPEAKER_10]: Hey hold my beer

[00:35:42] [SPEAKER_10]: it's time to find out what Mike and

[00:35:45] [SPEAKER_10]: Stomp are drinking

[00:35:46] [SPEAKER_10]: on this week's beer talk

[00:35:56] [SPEAKER_13]: um so this is the part of the show where we talk about what

[00:35:58] [SPEAKER_13]: we're drinking for beer if we're

[00:36:00] [SPEAKER_13]: drinking beer I'm not drinking anything Stomp I can

[00:36:02] [SPEAKER_05]: beerily drink I've got a hell of a story for ya

[00:36:04] [SPEAKER_05]: this is probably the story that's gonna get us canceled

[00:36:06] [SPEAKER_05]: but this is

[00:36:09] [SPEAKER_05]: a rupee

[00:36:10] [SPEAKER_05]: a rupee a rupee is

[00:36:12] [SPEAKER_05]: the money that

[00:36:14] [SPEAKER_05]: is used in several countries

[00:36:16] [SPEAKER_05]: including India Sri Lanka

[00:36:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Nepal you name it

[00:36:19] [SPEAKER_05]: so I saw this today at our

[00:36:22] [SPEAKER_05]: local Campton Cupboard

[00:36:24] [SPEAKER_05]: and it's a

[00:36:26] [SPEAKER_05]: basmati rice lager

[00:36:28] [SPEAKER_05]: which is fascinating it's made

[00:36:30] [SPEAKER_05]: out of natural rice

[00:36:33] [SPEAKER_05]: maize and barley

[00:36:34] [SPEAKER_05]: and three types of hops so

[00:36:36] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't know I have yet to open it

[00:36:38] [SPEAKER_05]: and try it but so let's see what this

[00:36:41] [SPEAKER_05]: thing tastes like I don't know different

[00:36:47] [SPEAKER_05]: different yeah it's like

[00:36:48] [SPEAKER_05]: sort of heavy you can see how it worked really

[00:36:50] [SPEAKER_05]: well with Indian cuisine

[00:36:52] [SPEAKER_05]: so yeah but

[00:36:54] [SPEAKER_05]: my quick story is

[00:36:57] [SPEAKER_05]: I was on the phone

[00:36:58] [SPEAKER_05]: waiting for half an hour

[00:37:00] [SPEAKER_05]: to get a hold of an IRS agent

[00:37:03] [SPEAKER_05]: half an hour later

[00:37:04] [SPEAKER_05]: I pressed the number one button so they can call me back

[00:37:07] [SPEAKER_05]: 20 minutes later

[00:37:09] [SPEAKER_05]: I get a call back from

[00:37:10] [SPEAKER_05]: clearly somebody that is in one of these

[00:37:12] [SPEAKER_05]: rupee countries and I love my

[00:37:14] [SPEAKER_05]: I love my Indian bros

[00:37:16] [SPEAKER_05]: no problem there whatsoever

[00:37:18] [SPEAKER_05]: but it got me thinking like is the IRS

[00:37:21] [SPEAKER_05]: outsourcing telephone

[00:37:22] [SPEAKER_05]: operators now because it was the worst connection

[00:37:24] [SPEAKER_05]: ever I went

[00:37:27] [SPEAKER_05]: 20 minutes in on a conversation

[00:37:29] [SPEAKER_05]: with this agent

[00:37:30] [SPEAKER_05]: I could barely understand

[00:37:32] [SPEAKER_05]: the phone was breaking up and just

[00:37:34] [SPEAKER_05]: when we were getting to the root of the question

[00:37:37] [SPEAKER_05]: it hung up on me

[00:37:40] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm like are you kidding me

[00:37:42] [SPEAKER_05]: what a nightmare

[00:37:44] [SPEAKER_13]: in unrelated news Stomps bank

[00:37:46] [SPEAKER_13]: accounts got cleared out last night

[00:37:50] [SPEAKER_13]: I don't know that's a good

[00:37:52] [SPEAKER_13]: I know you like to go down rabbit hole Stomps

[00:37:54] [SPEAKER_13]: so you do that research and figure out

[00:37:56] [SPEAKER_13]: if the IRS has outsourced

[00:37:58] [SPEAKER_13]: their call center to overseas that

[00:38:00] [SPEAKER_13]: would be pretty wild to me but who knows

[00:38:02] [SPEAKER_05]: the research that I did

[00:38:04] [SPEAKER_05]: says no to Indian countries

[00:38:07] [SPEAKER_05]: but yes to

[00:38:08] [SPEAKER_05]: outsourcing actually but they're more

[00:38:10] [SPEAKER_05]: to like the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican

[00:38:12] [SPEAKER_05]: places like that which is fascinating

[00:38:14] [SPEAKER_13]: well makes sense because they're US

[00:38:16] [SPEAKER_05]: territories so

[00:38:18] [SPEAKER_05]: anyway what a horrible

[00:38:20] [SPEAKER_05]: I would rather go to the dentist and experience

[00:38:22] [SPEAKER_05]: what you experience than

[00:38:24] [SPEAKER_05]: sit on the phone with an IRS agent

[00:38:28] [SPEAKER_13]: yeah

[00:38:28] [SPEAKER_13]: good luck good luck to you

[00:38:31] [SPEAKER_13]: alright and Will I don't know

[00:38:32] [SPEAKER_13]: if you're a drinker if you have a beer you want to share

[00:38:34] [SPEAKER_03]: if not it's no big deal I'm not a drinker but I didn't

[00:38:36] [SPEAKER_03]: want to come to this part unprepared

[00:38:38] [SPEAKER_03]: and say I'm drinking water so I'm finishing off

[00:38:40] [SPEAKER_03]: some cider okay that's good

[00:38:43] [SPEAKER_13]: I'm drinking some water myself

[00:38:44] [SPEAKER_03]: I also have water in a

[00:38:46] [SPEAKER_03]: through hiker smart water bottle

[00:38:49] [SPEAKER_13]: honestly Will I would say

[00:38:51] [SPEAKER_13]: it's Stomps

[00:38:52] [SPEAKER_13]: I would say like 75 percent of our

[00:38:54] [SPEAKER_13]: guests are like non drinkers it seems

[00:38:57] [SPEAKER_13]: like like it's more common than not that

[00:38:58] [SPEAKER_13]: people aren't drinkers yeah what's the story

[00:39:02] [SPEAKER_13]: which is good

[00:39:03] [SPEAKER_05]: it's good

[00:39:04] [SPEAKER_05]: well hold on a second there's new

[00:39:07] [SPEAKER_05]: data out there saying that the younger

[00:39:08] [SPEAKER_05]: generations are sort of shunning alcohol

[00:39:11] [SPEAKER_05]: understanding that it's not

[00:39:12] [SPEAKER_13]: beer specifically I think

[00:39:15] [SPEAKER_13]: see Will you're younger

[00:39:16] [SPEAKER_13]: generation you're proud

[00:39:21] [SPEAKER_13]: I'm jealous

[00:39:23] [SPEAKER_11]: I knew

[00:39:24] [SPEAKER_11]: we should have gone left back there

[00:39:26] [SPEAKER_11]: Stomp don't worry I know

[00:39:28] [SPEAKER_11]: it's this way I've got a feeling in my

[00:39:30] [SPEAKER_11]: gut are you sure you're not

[00:39:32] [SPEAKER_11]: about to have a bowel emergency

[00:39:35] [SPEAKER_11]: totally we got this

[00:39:36] [SPEAKER_11]: but I just blew out my hip

[00:39:38] [SPEAKER_11]: fell down that gully with my 40

[00:39:40] [SPEAKER_11]: year old micro spikes suck it

[00:39:42] [SPEAKER_11]: up Stomp it's 4 p.m. we're at

[00:39:44] [SPEAKER_11]: 3500 feet we got 9 miles

[00:39:46] [SPEAKER_11]: back to the parking lot your

[00:39:48] [SPEAKER_11]: leg may be broken we got no cell

[00:39:50] [SPEAKER_11]: connection and we can't feel our fingers

[00:39:52] [SPEAKER_11]: but we're finishing all of my list

[00:39:54] [SPEAKER_11]: tonight by the way I need some water

[00:39:56] [SPEAKER_11]: I'm empty I would if

[00:39:58] [SPEAKER_11]: I could see what I'm doing but my headlamp

[00:40:00] [SPEAKER_11]: batteries are dead you gotta be kidding me

[00:40:02] [SPEAKER_11]: what a chump this is the last time

[00:40:04] [SPEAKER_11]: I hike with you

[00:40:06] [SPEAKER_11]: whatever Mr. do you know me

[00:40:08] [SPEAKER_11]: I have a podcast

[00:40:13] [SPEAKER_10]: whatever let's find

[00:40:14] [SPEAKER_10]: out what Mike and Stomp have been

[00:40:16] [SPEAKER_13]: hiking alright Stomp this is the

[00:40:22] [SPEAKER_13]: part of show where we talk about recent hikes I couldn't hike

[00:40:24] [SPEAKER_13]: last weekend because I was laid

[00:40:26] [SPEAKER_13]: up with this stupid mall thing but it sounds like you

[00:40:28] [SPEAKER_05]: got out a little bit yeah just a teeny

[00:40:30] [SPEAKER_05]: a little bit I tried but last weekend was busy

[00:40:32] [SPEAKER_05]: with training and stuff

[00:40:35] [SPEAKER_05]: I did the I called

[00:40:36] [SPEAKER_05]: up my folks out of the bloom hey you wanna

[00:40:38] [SPEAKER_05]: go do Quincy Boggs so we've talked about that

[00:40:40] [SPEAKER_05]: recently it's in it's in Plymouth

[00:40:42] [SPEAKER_05]: it's I think it's like a mile and a half

[00:40:44] [SPEAKER_05]: loop and it's fantastic for

[00:40:46] [SPEAKER_05]: anybody that maybe

[00:40:48] [SPEAKER_05]: suffering from orthopedic problems

[00:40:50] [SPEAKER_05]: hip or knee or

[00:40:52] [SPEAKER_05]: whatever it may be because it's very gentle

[00:40:54] [SPEAKER_05]: there's very little grade to it

[00:40:56] [SPEAKER_05]: but it's surrounded by

[00:40:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Mount Stinson and some of the

[00:41:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Romney Cliffs absolutely

[00:41:02] [SPEAKER_05]: beautiful spot it's a beautiful bog so

[00:41:04] [SPEAKER_05]: I just tackled that nothing

[00:41:06] [SPEAKER_05]: else just hope to catch up with the

[00:41:08] [SPEAKER_05]: hike this weekend yeah I'm getting

[00:41:10] [SPEAKER_13]: out to the great gulf this on Sunday

[00:41:12] [SPEAKER_13]: I'm gonna meet up with some friends and

[00:41:14] [SPEAKER_13]: do some do some

[00:41:16] [SPEAKER_13]: tracing slash redlining

[00:41:18] [SPEAKER_13]: in the great gulf so Chandler

[00:41:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Brooke and what was some Suda

[00:41:22] [SPEAKER_05]: and all those other ones yeah

[00:41:25] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah Nabi and I had that on our

[00:41:27] [SPEAKER_05]: radar because those

[00:41:28] [SPEAKER_05]: are the ones that we need to

[00:41:30] [SPEAKER_05]: but yeah not this

[00:41:32] [SPEAKER_13]: weekend anyway poke around a little bit so

[00:41:35] [SPEAKER_13]: which would be good but

[00:41:36] [SPEAKER_13]: alright so

[00:41:39] [SPEAKER_13]: another sponsor here CS coffee

[00:41:40] [SPEAKER_05]: CS coffee our podcast is supported

[00:42:11] [SPEAKER_10]: it's time for

[00:42:13] [SPEAKER_10]: Slasher's notable hike of the week

[00:42:15] [SPEAKER_10]: if you want to be considered for the

[00:42:17] [SPEAKER_10]: Slasher's hike of the week simply tag

[00:42:19] [SPEAKER_10]: Slasher on your social media post

[00:42:25] [SPEAKER_13]: alright

[00:42:26] [SPEAKER_13]: so this is the part of the show where we do notable

[00:42:28] [SPEAKER_13]: listener hike of the week yeah

[00:42:30] [SPEAKER_05]: this is it let's see if

[00:42:32] [SPEAKER_05]: you want to tag Slasher on your adventure to be

[00:42:34] [SPEAKER_05]: considered for Slasher's hike of the week do so

[00:42:36] [SPEAKER_05]: and we'll do our best to get you on

[00:42:38] [SPEAKER_05]: the list so we have starting off

[00:42:40] [SPEAKER_05]: this week Northeast Discovery

[00:42:44] [SPEAKER_05]: Hiked Mount Rainier

[00:42:46] [SPEAKER_05]: that's a monster huh

[00:42:48] [SPEAKER_13]: yeah that's uh that's impressive

[00:42:51] [SPEAKER_13]: that's um is that Dave

[00:42:53] [SPEAKER_13]: David is that that

[00:42:55] [SPEAKER_13]: Northeast Discovery I'm not sure

[00:42:57] [SPEAKER_13]: I'm not really sure I think so yeah

[00:42:59] [SPEAKER_13]: Dave who yeah good to him

[00:43:02] [SPEAKER_13]: he's messaged us before so

[00:43:04] [SPEAKER_05]: I think I know who he is yeah these are

[00:43:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Instagram handles by the way

[00:43:08] [SPEAKER_05]: A Folsom

[00:43:10] [SPEAKER_05]: Hiked Owl's Head

[00:43:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Rhonda Willett 68

[00:43:14] [SPEAKER_05]: finished her New Hampshire 48

[00:43:16] [SPEAKER_05]: her summer

[00:43:18] [SPEAKER_05]: New Hampshire 48

[00:43:20] [SPEAKER_05]: and that's pretty awesome

[00:43:21] [SPEAKER_13]: I got to do this next one still yeah sure

[00:43:25] [SPEAKER_13]: so um

[00:43:27] [SPEAKER_13]: Courtney and Chris Severance

[00:43:28] [SPEAKER_13]: finished up the 52 with a

[00:43:30] [SPEAKER_13]: view on Mount Success

[00:43:31] [SPEAKER_13]: and Courtney had sent over a note letting

[00:43:34] [SPEAKER_13]: us know that Chris listens every week

[00:43:36] [SPEAKER_13]: so we wanted to give Chris a

[00:43:38] [SPEAKER_13]: huge shout out

[00:43:40] [SPEAKER_13]: say congratulations and keep on

[00:43:42] [SPEAKER_13]: hiking and also a shout out to

[00:43:44] [SPEAKER_13]: Courtney who apparently

[00:43:45] [SPEAKER_13]: when they started the 52 with a view

[00:43:48] [SPEAKER_13]: and stop I want you to get the shame drop

[00:43:50] [SPEAKER_13]: going in a minute here

[00:43:51] [SPEAKER_13]: when they started their 52 with a view

[00:43:54] [SPEAKER_13]: journey

[00:43:56] [SPEAKER_13]: Chris took Courtney

[00:43:58] [SPEAKER_13]: up to Mount Willard

[00:43:59] [SPEAKER_13]: and they had to turn around halfway

[00:44:02] [SPEAKER_13]: what happened?

[00:44:05] [SPEAKER_13]: She apparently

[00:44:06] [SPEAKER_13]: found her hiking bug

[00:44:07] [SPEAKER_13]: she said in the note she said to me she's like I didn't always

[00:44:09] [SPEAKER_13]: love it but I know that he loved it

[00:44:11] [SPEAKER_13]: um so so I did it so

[00:44:13] [SPEAKER_13]: I just want to give not only a shout out

[00:44:16] [SPEAKER_13]: to Chris but

[00:44:17] [SPEAKER_13]: also to Courtney for sucking it up

[00:44:19] [SPEAKER_13]: and hiking even though she didn't

[00:44:21] [SPEAKER_13]: always love it yeah no kidding congratulations

[00:44:24] [SPEAKER_13]: that's fantastic

[00:44:26] [SPEAKER_13]: yeah yeah and she said that um

[00:44:27] [SPEAKER_13]: you know Chris has been sober um

[00:44:30] [SPEAKER_13]: since he started the journey on the 52 with

[00:44:31] [SPEAKER_13]: a view so he's basically turned in one

[00:44:34] [SPEAKER_13]: one thing to focus on another thing

[00:44:35] [SPEAKER_13]: and it's worked out good for him so shout out

[00:44:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Congrats

[00:44:39] [SPEAKER_05]: um but you didn't win yet

[00:44:41] [SPEAKER_05]: so hold on

[00:44:43] [SPEAKER_13]: didn't win yet but you know that

[00:44:45] [SPEAKER_13]: she definitely like put a leg up with that nice

[00:44:47] [SPEAKER_13]: email so we'll see

[00:44:49] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah alright so moving on we have

[00:44:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Jamie May

[00:44:53] [SPEAKER_05]: hiked number 43 out of the

[00:44:55] [SPEAKER_05]: 48 and that's Cabot

[00:44:57] [SPEAKER_05]: and also hit

[00:44:59] [SPEAKER_05]: the Horn in Rogers Ledge

[00:45:01] [SPEAKER_05]: of the

[00:45:04] [SPEAKER_05]: 52 with a view correct?

[00:45:06] [SPEAKER_05]: and then for the T25

[00:45:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Devil's Hopyard which is a little

[00:45:09] [SPEAKER_05]: further north if I remember correctly

[00:45:11] [SPEAKER_05]: and then 44 up

[00:45:13] [SPEAKER_05]: Ammo but I'm not sure what

[00:45:15] [SPEAKER_05]: 44 was it could have been Washington

[00:45:17] [SPEAKER_05]: or Monroe but nice

[00:45:19] [SPEAKER_05]: work there Steve Summits

[00:45:22] [SPEAKER_05]: climbed Avery Peak to

[00:45:23] [SPEAKER_05]: raise a homemade flagpole

[00:45:25] [SPEAKER_05]: to teamrunrun.com

[00:45:28] [SPEAKER_05]: those

[00:45:29] [SPEAKER_05]: lost on 9-11

[00:45:31] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah that's very cool

[00:45:34] [SPEAKER_05]: EC Banks

[00:45:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Hikes like the High

[00:45:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Point in Utah

[00:45:39] [SPEAKER_05]: Kings Peak

[00:45:41] [SPEAKER_05]: then finally finishing off the week we have Liz

[00:45:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Fay

[00:45:44] [SPEAKER_05]: and she finished tracing the Lakes Region

[00:45:47] [SPEAKER_05]: Conservation Trust that's a pretty

[00:45:49] [SPEAKER_05]: big effort there so congrats

[00:45:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Liz that's really cool it's a beautiful

[00:45:53] [SPEAKER_05]: area to hike to

[00:45:55] [SPEAKER_05]: ugh stop

[00:45:56] [SPEAKER_05]: whatcha gonna do when the list

[00:45:59] [SPEAKER_05]: comes for you?

[00:46:01] [SPEAKER_13]: North East of...

[00:46:02] [SPEAKER_13]: he did Mount Rainier

[00:46:04] [SPEAKER_13]: that's impressive and then Ronda

[00:46:06] [SPEAKER_13]: finished her summer 48 and then we

[00:46:08] [SPEAKER_13]: got Chris and Courtney doing the 52

[00:46:10] [SPEAKER_13]: alright I'm gonna give

[00:46:12] [SPEAKER_13]: everybody gets a prize

[00:46:16] [SPEAKER_13]: alright I give Chris and

[00:46:18] [SPEAKER_13]: Courtney number one the 52 with a view

[00:46:20] [SPEAKER_13]: because the 52 with a view is better than the

[00:46:22] [SPEAKER_13]: 4,000 footers in my opinion

[00:46:25] [SPEAKER_13]: then we

[00:46:26] [SPEAKER_13]: give it North East Discovery for Mount Rainier

[00:46:28] [SPEAKER_13]: because that's pretty impressive

[00:46:30] [SPEAKER_13]: then Ronda for the

[00:46:32] [SPEAKER_13]: 4,000 footers

[00:46:34] [SPEAKER_13]: and then like EC Banks

[00:46:36] [SPEAKER_13]: like Audible Mansion for Kings Peak

[00:46:38] [SPEAKER_13]: and Liz Audible Mansion for Lakes Region

[00:46:40] [SPEAKER_13]: tracing and

[00:46:42] [SPEAKER_13]: everybody's great everyone's a winner

[00:46:45] [SPEAKER_05]: everybody gets

[00:46:46] [SPEAKER_05]: a prize thanks for coming

[00:47:27] [SPEAKER_13]: so we're gonna move on to our guest

[00:47:30] [SPEAKER_13]: of the week here so Will are you ready?

[00:47:32] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm ready

[00:47:33] [SPEAKER_13]: very good so welcome to

[00:47:36] [SPEAKER_13]: you so just a little bit of background for the listeners

[00:47:37] [SPEAKER_13]: so we had I think I had caught

[00:47:40] [SPEAKER_13]: you or like you had posted on social media Will

[00:47:42] [SPEAKER_13]: and I've seen a couple of your projects in the past

[00:47:44] [SPEAKER_13]: so I knew who you were

[00:47:46] [SPEAKER_13]: and I'm always like the first thing I

[00:47:48] [SPEAKER_13]: go to was like the FKT because I'm interested

[00:47:49] [SPEAKER_13]: in the logistics cause like and we'll talk about

[00:47:52] [SPEAKER_13]: it a little bit more but I always find it

[00:47:54] [SPEAKER_13]: interesting

[00:47:55] [SPEAKER_13]: how to optimize like these difficult

[00:47:58] [SPEAKER_13]: routes and you know figure out the strategy

[00:48:00] [SPEAKER_13]: for how you're gonna do that so

[00:48:02] [SPEAKER_13]: that was what I was most interested in but anyway

[00:48:03] [SPEAKER_13]: I knew you did this project and then

[00:48:06] [SPEAKER_13]: we had talked about it on

[00:48:08] [SPEAKER_13]: an episode and then Joe Hamel

[00:48:10] [SPEAKER_13]: had reached out to us and said she was friends with

[00:48:12] [SPEAKER_13]: you and had recommended that we

[00:48:14] [SPEAKER_13]: reach out and I think that's how we got connected

[00:48:16] [SPEAKER_13]: so thank you for coming on appreciate it

[00:48:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Joe Bisco but yes oh Joe Bisco

[00:48:19] [SPEAKER_13]: that's it so Joe I know another person named

[00:48:22] [SPEAKER_13]: Joe Hamel so Joe Bisco right

[00:48:25] [SPEAKER_13]: but why don't you

[00:48:26] [SPEAKER_13]: start off by introducing yourself

[00:48:28] [SPEAKER_13]: and talk a little bit about your early life

[00:48:30] [SPEAKER_13]: and then how you got into outdoor sports

[00:48:32] [SPEAKER_03]: and hiking yeah so

[00:48:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I grew up in a little town

[00:48:36] [SPEAKER_03]: in Vermont called Warren Vermont

[00:48:39] [SPEAKER_03]: didn't have any

[00:48:40] [SPEAKER_03]: like stop lights or gas

[00:48:42] [SPEAKER_03]: stations very small town grew up on

[00:48:44] [SPEAKER_03]: a dead end dirt road with

[00:48:46] [SPEAKER_03]: lots of woods around me to

[00:48:48] [SPEAKER_03]: me I spent a lot of time

[00:48:50] [SPEAKER_03]: outside but not really

[00:48:52] [SPEAKER_03]: hiking like I would explore in the woods

[00:48:54] [SPEAKER_03]: with my cousins a lot but when I came to hiking

[00:48:56] [SPEAKER_03]: with family it was really we might do

[00:48:58] [SPEAKER_03]: like a two mile hike now and again

[00:49:00] [SPEAKER_03]: but not much experience

[00:49:02] [SPEAKER_03]: or exposure to that kind of life

[00:49:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I had one failed camel

[00:49:06] [SPEAKER_03]: hump experience when I was

[00:49:08] [SPEAKER_03]: maybe seven or eight years old

[00:49:10] [SPEAKER_03]: my mom my

[00:49:12] [SPEAKER_03]: my brother

[00:49:14] [SPEAKER_03]: but I really didn't get into

[00:49:16] [SPEAKER_03]: actual hiking until after

[00:49:18] [SPEAKER_03]: college but I was very much

[00:49:20] [SPEAKER_03]: grew up in the outdoors in that

[00:49:22] [SPEAKER_13]: environment did you do sports in high school

[00:49:24] [SPEAKER_03]: and in college yeah so in high

[00:49:26] [SPEAKER_03]: school I ran cross country

[00:49:28] [SPEAKER_03]: in track and I also

[00:49:30] [SPEAKER_03]: skied cross country

[00:49:32] [SPEAKER_03]: athletic background but I was never

[00:49:35] [SPEAKER_03]: great at those sports

[00:49:36] [SPEAKER_13]: yeah but you were

[00:49:38] [SPEAKER_13]: you were not unfamiliar with the

[00:49:40] [SPEAKER_13]: world of cardio sports yes

[00:49:42] [SPEAKER_03]: and I think I'll be doing Joe a disservice

[00:49:44] [SPEAKER_03]: if I didn't tell one of her favorite stories

[00:49:47] [SPEAKER_03]: it's kind of my background

[00:49:48] [SPEAKER_03]: in endurance things is

[00:49:50] [SPEAKER_03]: when I was a kid my dad

[00:49:52] [SPEAKER_03]: and I would each year participate

[00:49:54] [SPEAKER_03]: in an event called moving mountains

[00:49:56] [SPEAKER_03]: for Parkinson's it was held at

[00:49:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Sugarbush ski resort and it was a vertical

[00:50:00] [SPEAKER_03]: challenge where you'd try

[00:50:02] [SPEAKER_03]: to ski as many vertical feet as you could

[00:50:04] [SPEAKER_03]: while also raising money for

[00:50:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Parkinson's research

[00:50:09] [SPEAKER_03]: and each year

[00:50:10] [SPEAKER_03]: for at least three years

[00:50:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I believe my dad raised the most

[00:50:14] [SPEAKER_03]: money and I skied the most vertical

[00:50:16] [SPEAKER_03]: feet each year because everyone else

[00:50:18] [SPEAKER_03]: was going in to get lunch and I just

[00:50:20] [SPEAKER_03]: carried that on my back and I never felt

[00:50:22] [SPEAKER_03]: the need to stop and

[00:50:24] [SPEAKER_03]: I feel like that kind of attribute a little bit that

[00:50:26] [SPEAKER_03]: where I am now

[00:50:28] [SPEAKER_13]: yeah yeah that's the

[00:50:31] [SPEAKER_13]: I'm definitely more

[00:50:32] [SPEAKER_13]: the like let's go inside and take a break person

[00:50:34] [SPEAKER_13]: but you know you got to have that mentality

[00:50:36] [SPEAKER_13]: I think to do some of the projects that you've done

[00:50:38] [SPEAKER_13]: over the course of the last few years

[00:50:40] [SPEAKER_13]: for sure so when did

[00:50:42] [SPEAKER_13]: you when did you really get the bug for hiking then

[00:50:44] [SPEAKER_03]: and how did that happen yes that was after

[00:50:46] [SPEAKER_03]: college I moved to where I am currently living

[00:50:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Middlebury and

[00:50:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Mount Abraham was pretty close

[00:50:52] [SPEAKER_03]: to me and I was climbing

[00:50:54] [SPEAKER_03]: some smaller things and just

[00:50:57] [SPEAKER_03]: happened to see that one was also

[00:50:58] [SPEAKER_03]: nearby I wasn't familiar

[00:51:00] [SPEAKER_03]: with any four thousand lists or anything

[00:51:03] [SPEAKER_03]: and so I hiked

[00:51:04] [SPEAKER_03]: it I thought it was amazing I thought it was

[00:51:06] [SPEAKER_03]: really cool that it was late fall but there was snow

[00:51:08] [SPEAKER_03]: at the summit when there wasn't snow at the trailhead

[00:51:10] [SPEAKER_03]: and I texted my

[00:51:12] [SPEAKER_03]: friend Ruben and I said

[00:51:14] [SPEAKER_03]: I just did this really cool thing

[00:51:16] [SPEAKER_03]: I hiked a mountain that was four thousand feet tall

[00:51:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I want to do more of these

[00:51:20] [SPEAKER_03]: let's do one together

[00:51:22] [SPEAKER_03]: I think it was the following weekend

[00:51:24] [SPEAKER_03]: we did Camel's Hump and he

[00:51:26] [SPEAKER_03]: told me that at the end he hated

[00:51:28] [SPEAKER_03]: it but he could tell that I

[00:51:30] [SPEAKER_03]: really enjoyed it and I should

[00:51:32] [SPEAKER_03]: try to make it a goal to hike

[00:51:34] [SPEAKER_03]: all of the four thousand footers in Vermont

[00:51:36] [SPEAKER_03]: and at the time I was

[00:51:38] [SPEAKER_03]: kind of intimidated by that even though there's only

[00:51:40] [SPEAKER_03]: five of them I

[00:51:43] [SPEAKER_03]: thought that was

[00:51:45] [SPEAKER_03]: going to be quite the challenge

[00:51:47] [SPEAKER_03]: but I got it done quite quickly

[00:51:50] [SPEAKER_03]: and moved on

[00:51:51] [SPEAKER_03]: to the Adirondacks

[00:51:53] [SPEAKER_03]: I remember debating do I do the Adirondacks

[00:51:55] [SPEAKER_03]: next or do I go to the White Mountains

[00:51:57] [SPEAKER_03]: and I went to the Adirondacks

[00:51:59] [SPEAKER_03]: because they were closer

[00:52:00] [SPEAKER_03]: and I ended up doing those

[00:52:03] [SPEAKER_03]: in just under a year

[00:52:05] [SPEAKER_03]: the Adirondack 46

[00:52:06] [SPEAKER_03]: and near the end I had been

[00:52:08] [SPEAKER_03]: pushing myself to finish

[00:52:10] [SPEAKER_03]: under that year and I remember

[00:52:13] [SPEAKER_03]: thinking I want to take it

[00:52:15] [SPEAKER_03]: slower when I go off to New

[00:52:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Hampshire I really want to

[00:52:19] [SPEAKER_03]: enjoy it all and not be in a rush

[00:52:20] [SPEAKER_03]: but my second hike

[00:52:22] [SPEAKER_03]: in New Hampshire ever I

[00:52:25] [SPEAKER_03]: met Joe Bisco

[00:52:26] [SPEAKER_03]: and she told me that

[00:52:28] [SPEAKER_03]: she was planning to do a single season

[00:52:30] [SPEAKER_03]: winter 48 round

[00:52:32] [SPEAKER_03]: and once I heard about that

[00:52:35] [SPEAKER_03]: that's when everything

[00:52:36] [SPEAKER_03]: kind of escalated

[00:52:39] [SPEAKER_13]: yeah then you started

[00:52:40] [SPEAKER_13]: getting into the more extreme stuff

[00:52:42] [SPEAKER_13]: when you were doing the Adirondacks were you doing

[00:52:44] [SPEAKER_13]: everything solo or did you start making

[00:52:46] [SPEAKER_13]: connections and hiking with those people

[00:52:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I made some connections in the Adirondacks

[00:52:50] [SPEAKER_03]: but honestly I found more community

[00:52:52] [SPEAKER_03]: in the White Mountains don't get me wrong

[00:52:54] [SPEAKER_03]: I love the Adirondacks but I've met more people in the Whites

[00:52:57] [SPEAKER_03]: that's where my community is

[00:52:59] [SPEAKER_13]: okay and then do you

[00:53:00] [SPEAKER_13]: with the single season

[00:53:02] [SPEAKER_13]: winter 4000 footer

[00:53:05] [SPEAKER_13]: were you still

[00:53:06] [SPEAKER_13]: learning a lot about winter hiking at that point

[00:53:08] [SPEAKER_03]: oh definitely

[00:53:10] [SPEAKER_03]: I had had

[00:53:14] [SPEAKER_03]: half of a season in the Adirondacks

[00:53:16] [SPEAKER_03]: I guess because I finished in the winter

[00:53:18] [SPEAKER_03]: and then I

[00:53:20] [SPEAKER_03]: finished in technical fall still

[00:53:22] [SPEAKER_03]: but it was late fall so there's still snow

[00:53:24] [SPEAKER_03]: on the ground so my first time

[00:53:26] [SPEAKER_03]: actually hiking in the winter was doing

[00:53:28] [SPEAKER_03]: my single season 48

[00:53:30] [SPEAKER_03]: and so I was very much a novice

[00:53:33] [SPEAKER_03]: still figuring out

[00:53:34] [SPEAKER_03]: traction and layering

[00:53:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I remember one of my

[00:53:39] [SPEAKER_03]: height or probably a few of them

[00:53:41] [SPEAKER_03]: summiting shirtless because I just

[00:53:43] [SPEAKER_03]: couldn't figure out my layering and

[00:53:45] [SPEAKER_03]: now I look back at that

[00:53:47] [SPEAKER_03]: just rolling my eyes a little bit

[00:53:49] [SPEAKER_13]: yeah do you

[00:53:50] [SPEAKER_13]: one of the things that I'm always curious about

[00:53:53] [SPEAKER_13]: is like you people that

[00:53:54] [SPEAKER_13]: take on hiking very quickly

[00:53:56] [SPEAKER_13]: and have some success or they

[00:53:58] [SPEAKER_13]: accomplish things in a fast

[00:54:01] [SPEAKER_13]: way like you've

[00:54:02] [SPEAKER_13]: done a lot

[00:54:05] [SPEAKER_13]: but you

[00:54:06] [SPEAKER_13]: like you said you're still

[00:54:08] [SPEAKER_13]: kind of a novice even though you've

[00:54:09] [SPEAKER_13]: done the 4000 footers in the Adirondacks

[00:54:12] [SPEAKER_13]: and even the White Mountains like regional

[00:54:13] [SPEAKER_13]: knowledge is important going

[00:54:15] [SPEAKER_13]: a couple of rounds in these mountains is critical

[00:54:17] [SPEAKER_13]: to really be what I think is experience

[00:54:19] [SPEAKER_13]: did you ever get in trouble or did you ever

[00:54:21] [SPEAKER_13]: stretch yourself too much in those early days where

[00:54:23] [SPEAKER_13]: you look back and you go wow I was really

[00:54:26] [SPEAKER_13]: putting myself at risk and I didn't even know it

[00:54:28] [SPEAKER_03]: no and I think part of that

[00:54:30] [SPEAKER_03]: is because I started out

[00:54:32] [SPEAKER_03]: pretty cautious I remember my

[00:54:34] [SPEAKER_03]: first time that I hiked

[00:54:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Mount Marcy

[00:54:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I was telling people what I was planning on

[00:54:40] [SPEAKER_03]: doing and it was in the winter

[00:54:41] [SPEAKER_03]: and they were like you need to have like a sleeping bag

[00:54:44] [SPEAKER_03]: and everything you need to be prepared

[00:54:46] [SPEAKER_03]: to spend the night out there it's a big hike

[00:54:48] [SPEAKER_03]: and so I had a really

[00:54:50] [SPEAKER_03]: heavy pack but I was prepared for

[00:54:52] [SPEAKER_03]: anything and so I feel like

[00:54:54] [SPEAKER_03]: with my inexperience

[00:54:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I still

[00:54:58] [SPEAKER_03]: with my inexperience I was carrying

[00:55:00] [SPEAKER_03]: what I needed to

[00:55:02] [SPEAKER_03]: they say they pack your

[00:55:04] [SPEAKER_03]: fears and I was packing

[00:55:06] [SPEAKER_03]: more than I am

[00:55:08] [SPEAKER_03]: now which is in some

[00:55:10] [SPEAKER_03]: ways unfortunate but I feel like with

[00:55:13] [SPEAKER_03]: experience sometimes

[00:55:14] [SPEAKER_03]: your fears

[00:55:16] [SPEAKER_03]: you feel a little more confident that

[00:55:18] [SPEAKER_03]: they're not going to come

[00:55:20] [SPEAKER_03]: true and so you might start packing

[00:55:22] [SPEAKER_03]: less which is unfortunate and it's something

[00:55:24] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm starting to become aware of that I need to

[00:55:26] [SPEAKER_03]: start feeling those fears again

[00:55:28] [SPEAKER_03]: and feeling that pack a bit more for safety

[00:55:31] [SPEAKER_13]: got it right so you went the opposite

[00:55:32] [SPEAKER_13]: direction you stayed pretty safe as you were

[00:55:34] [SPEAKER_13]: as you were still gaining experience now

[00:55:36] [SPEAKER_13]: at what point did you so you complete

[00:55:38] [SPEAKER_13]: the 4,000 footers in the winter I'm assuming

[00:55:40] [SPEAKER_13]: at that point then you're

[00:55:42] [SPEAKER_13]: pretty close to the 115 but you

[00:55:44] [SPEAKER_13]: got to set your sights in mean right?

[00:55:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Right so that winter

[00:55:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I actually thought about doing a single season

[00:55:51] [SPEAKER_03]: 67

[00:55:52] [SPEAKER_03]: after I finished the 48

[00:55:55] [SPEAKER_03]: but I sent in my application

[00:55:57] [SPEAKER_03]: to Baxter State Park and they never got back

[00:55:59] [SPEAKER_03]: to me and so I

[00:56:01] [SPEAKER_03]: figured it wasn't worth

[00:56:02] [SPEAKER_03]: wasting my time on the other peaks

[00:56:05] [SPEAKER_03]: up there that winter if I wasn't able to

[00:56:07] [SPEAKER_03]: complete the 67

[00:56:10] [SPEAKER_13]: got it but eventually you got to mean over

[00:56:13] [SPEAKER_13]: the course of summer and fall

[00:56:15] [SPEAKER_03]: yes I actually

[00:56:18] [SPEAKER_03]: never finished

[00:56:19] [SPEAKER_03]: my 115

[00:56:21] [SPEAKER_03]: until my single

[00:56:23] [SPEAKER_03]: season winter 115

[00:56:25] [SPEAKER_03]: okay that was my I believe that was my

[00:56:27] [SPEAKER_03]: first time ever making up to

[00:56:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Baxter State Park

[00:56:30] [SPEAKER_13]: do you know how many people have done a single season

[00:56:33] [SPEAKER_03]: winter 115? I believe there's four

[00:56:35] [SPEAKER_03]: of us there is

[00:56:37] [SPEAKER_03]: one person I don't recall their name

[00:56:39] [SPEAKER_03]: I believe they did it years ago

[00:56:41] [SPEAKER_03]: and then

[00:56:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Rebecca Schubert

[00:56:45] [SPEAKER_03]: and Matt

[00:56:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Janaron or something like that

[00:56:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I apologize to him if I'm

[00:56:51] [SPEAKER_03]: probably getting his last name wrong but

[00:56:52] [SPEAKER_03]: those two did it the same winter

[00:56:55] [SPEAKER_03]: that I did it

[00:56:56] [SPEAKER_13]: okay and

[00:56:58] [SPEAKER_13]: at what point did you come up with

[00:57:00] [SPEAKER_13]: the plan to do it?

[00:57:03] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah so that was kind of an accident

[00:57:07] [SPEAKER_03]: two winters after I did

[00:57:09] [SPEAKER_03]: my single season 48

[00:57:10] [SPEAKER_03]: I thought it would be cool to

[00:57:13] [SPEAKER_03]: pair that with a

[00:57:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Adirondack 46 single season

[00:57:17] [SPEAKER_03]: winter and so I

[00:57:19] [SPEAKER_03]: did that single season winter

[00:57:20] [SPEAKER_03]: in the Adirondacks finished in

[00:57:24] [SPEAKER_03]: maybe a month or so

[00:57:25] [SPEAKER_03]: and I was

[00:57:27] [SPEAKER_03]: talking with some friends

[00:57:28] [SPEAKER_03]: and they were all saying

[00:57:30] [SPEAKER_03]: I should go for the single season 48

[00:57:33] [SPEAKER_03]: as well just to have those done

[00:57:34] [SPEAKER_03]: the same single season

[00:57:36] [SPEAKER_03]: but I knew that Rebecca and Matt

[00:57:38] [SPEAKER_03]: were out there going for the 115

[00:57:40] [SPEAKER_03]: single season and I knew

[00:57:42] [SPEAKER_03]: I would be kind of

[00:57:45] [SPEAKER_03]: disappointed in myself if I was to

[00:57:46] [SPEAKER_03]: push for the 48 as well and

[00:57:48] [SPEAKER_03]: they didn't go all the way

[00:57:50] [SPEAKER_03]: it was kind of in my mind all or nothing

[00:57:53] [SPEAKER_03]: but I figured I would

[00:57:54] [SPEAKER_03]: start with the 48

[00:57:56] [SPEAKER_03]: and if everything went perfectly

[00:57:58] [SPEAKER_03]: I could have enough time to hit

[00:58:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Maine and I did Vermont

[00:58:02] [SPEAKER_03]: as some after work hikes

[00:58:04] [SPEAKER_03]: just to get those out of the way

[00:58:05] [SPEAKER_03]: and everything did go perfectly I got my

[00:58:09] [SPEAKER_03]: perfect weather days for

[00:58:10] [SPEAKER_03]: my presidential traverse and my extended

[00:58:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Pemi loop and those were really the key

[00:58:14] [SPEAKER_03]: things that I just needed to get good weather days

[00:58:16] [SPEAKER_03]: for those or else the whole thing wasn't possible

[00:58:19] [SPEAKER_13]: Did you

[00:58:20] [SPEAKER_13]: how much info did you have to get on

[00:58:22] [SPEAKER_13]: the winter Pemi loops because

[00:58:24] [SPEAKER_13]: you can't rely on especially the sections

[00:58:26] [SPEAKER_13]: between North Poffey yet going to Garfield

[00:58:28] [SPEAKER_13]: that's a dicey section

[00:58:30] [SPEAKER_13]: and then

[00:58:32] [SPEAKER_13]: really I mean that's the main section

[00:58:34] [SPEAKER_13]: those sections between Garfield and Galehead

[00:58:37] [SPEAKER_13]: and South Twin you never know

[00:58:38] [SPEAKER_13]: what you're going to get on the Twinway either

[00:58:40] [SPEAKER_13]: were you able to get info ahead of time that you knew

[00:58:42] [SPEAKER_13]: those were broken out or did you have to break them out?

[00:58:44] [SPEAKER_03]: I didn't mind having to

[00:58:46] [SPEAKER_03]: break trail necessarily so I wasn't

[00:58:48] [SPEAKER_03]: really looking for that I just wanted good

[00:58:50] [SPEAKER_03]: weather I had done

[00:58:52] [SPEAKER_03]: a winter condition extended Pemi loop

[00:58:54] [SPEAKER_03]: previously it was technical spring

[00:58:56] [SPEAKER_03]: but it was still in full winter conditions

[00:58:58] [SPEAKER_03]: and I had broken trail from

[00:59:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Lafayette to Garfield

[00:59:03] [SPEAKER_03]: and then again from

[00:59:05] [SPEAKER_03]: the Twins to

[00:59:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Geyu and so I knew I was

[00:59:10] [SPEAKER_03]: capable of doing it and I did end up

[00:59:12] [SPEAKER_03]: getting that section out again on the winter 115

[00:59:16] [SPEAKER_03]: and that wasn't really an issue

[00:59:19] [SPEAKER_13]: yeah wow what a beast

[00:59:22] [SPEAKER_13]: crazy I think you did that

[00:59:23] [SPEAKER_13]: so then

[00:59:24] [SPEAKER_13]: you get up to me and any problem getting into

[00:59:26] [SPEAKER_13]: back sure at that point?

[00:59:28] [SPEAKER_03]: I almost had issues actually

[00:59:30] [SPEAKER_03]: so to my knowledge

[00:59:32] [SPEAKER_03]: at that time they only accept

[00:59:34] [SPEAKER_03]: winter applications via snail mail

[00:59:37] [SPEAKER_03]: and so I sent

[00:59:38] [SPEAKER_03]: in my application and I

[00:59:41] [SPEAKER_03]: got in a little ways into the

[00:59:43] [SPEAKER_03]: hiking season

[00:59:44] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm getting peaks under my belt and

[00:59:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I still

[00:59:49] [SPEAKER_03]: have her back still on her back

[00:59:51] [SPEAKER_03]: and I end up calling them and like

[00:59:54] [SPEAKER_03]: finishing up this

[00:59:55] [SPEAKER_03]: big project and I really

[00:59:57] [SPEAKER_03]: need to get in

[00:59:58] [SPEAKER_03]: and they're like we can't find an

[01:00:01] [SPEAKER_03]: application for you anywhere

[01:00:02] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not sure if it got lost or what happened

[01:00:05] [SPEAKER_03]: but they were like we can take an application

[01:00:07] [SPEAKER_03]: for you over the phone right now

[01:00:08] [SPEAKER_03]: and we'll get you in

[01:00:10] [SPEAKER_03]: I really appreciated that

[01:00:11] [SPEAKER_03]: thank you to them

[01:00:12] [SPEAKER_13]: wow that's awesome

[01:00:15] [SPEAKER_13]: so you got about 90 days over the course of winter

[01:00:18] [SPEAKER_13]: how many of those days are actually hiking?

[01:00:20] [SPEAKER_13]: to get the 115 done

[01:00:21] [SPEAKER_03]: actual hiking was

[01:00:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't remember exactly

[01:00:25] [SPEAKER_03]: it was probably it was mostly weekends

[01:00:28] [SPEAKER_03]: and I took probably two weeks off

[01:00:30] [SPEAKER_03]: of work

[01:00:31] [SPEAKER_13]: so you're working during this?

[01:00:33] [SPEAKER_03]: yes I'm a preschool teacher

[01:00:36] [SPEAKER_03]: but my

[01:00:37] [SPEAKER_03]: lapse time was 86 days I believe

[01:00:39] [SPEAKER_03]: so I was cutting it really close

[01:00:42] [SPEAKER_13]: wow

[01:00:43] [SPEAKER_13]: and then so you completed that

[01:00:45] [SPEAKER_13]: and then you're one of like four people

[01:00:47] [SPEAKER_13]: that have done that did you coordinate

[01:00:49] [SPEAKER_13]: with the other two people or were you just sort

[01:00:51] [SPEAKER_13]: of like ships in the

[01:00:52] [SPEAKER_13]: with how it ended up going

[01:00:55] [SPEAKER_03]: what they had left

[01:00:57] [SPEAKER_03]: when they planned

[01:00:59] [SPEAKER_03]: it all from the beginning I did not

[01:01:01] [SPEAKER_03]: and I would have done this

[01:01:03] [SPEAKER_03]: very differently I probably would have done it a lot more

[01:01:05] [SPEAKER_03]: like they did but

[01:01:07] [SPEAKER_03]: what I had left was things that

[01:01:09] [SPEAKER_03]: they had started with

[01:01:11] [SPEAKER_03]: so we didn't have any overlap of peaks

[01:01:13] [SPEAKER_03]: that were needed near the end

[01:01:15] [SPEAKER_03]: so unfortunately there was no linking up

[01:01:17] [SPEAKER_13]: okay and then

[01:01:19] [SPEAKER_13]: so you completed this

[01:01:21] [SPEAKER_13]: and then you're trying to figure out

[01:01:23] [SPEAKER_13]: have you done any through hikes? have you done

[01:01:25] [SPEAKER_13]: the Appalachian Trail or anything like that?

[01:01:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I've not done the AT my only through hikes

[01:01:29] [SPEAKER_03]: have been I did

[01:01:31] [SPEAKER_03]: a diaritism with my friend Nicole

[01:01:33] [SPEAKER_03]: and then I did

[01:01:35] [SPEAKER_03]: the long trail and then my

[01:01:37] [SPEAKER_03]: 115 through hike

[01:01:39] [SPEAKER_13]: so this is crazy

[01:01:42] [SPEAKER_13]: so you through

[01:01:43] [SPEAKER_13]: hiked the entire 115 how many

[01:01:45] [SPEAKER_03]: total miles is that? that was an

[01:01:47] [SPEAKER_03]: estimated 1300 miles

[01:01:49] [SPEAKER_13]: 1300 miles that's incredible

[01:01:51] [SPEAKER_13]: that's like almost

[01:01:53] [SPEAKER_13]: half the distance a little more than

[01:01:55] [SPEAKER_13]: half the distance of the

[01:01:57] [SPEAKER_13]: Appalachian Trail so

[01:01:59] [SPEAKER_13]: weird when you get that idea

[01:02:01] [SPEAKER_13]: like no one else has done that I'm assuming right?

[01:02:04] [SPEAKER_03]: One person had multi-sported

[01:02:06] [SPEAKER_03]: the route

[01:02:07] [SPEAKER_03]: and they had biked

[01:02:09] [SPEAKER_03]: I think approximately 1300

[01:02:12] [SPEAKER_03]: miles I'm sorry

[01:02:13] [SPEAKER_03]: biked approximately 300

[01:02:15] [SPEAKER_03]: of the miles

[01:02:17] [SPEAKER_03]: and then they did the rest on foot

[01:02:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I believe her name was Taylor Radigan

[01:02:21] [SPEAKER_03]: so she was definitely

[01:02:23] [SPEAKER_03]: an inspiration

[01:02:26] [SPEAKER_03]: but I was

[01:02:27] [SPEAKER_03]: first person to do it all on foot though

[01:02:29] [SPEAKER_13]: you were okay

[01:02:32] [SPEAKER_13]: I'm trying to think how

[01:02:33] [SPEAKER_13]: you approach this so do you

[01:02:35] [SPEAKER_13]: do it southbound to north

[01:02:37] [SPEAKER_13]: do you do it southbound or northbound?

[01:02:39] [SPEAKER_13]: what's the planning when you're going to do a through hike

[01:02:41] [SPEAKER_13]: of the 150 so for the listeners

[01:02:43] [SPEAKER_13]: essentially what we're talking about is

[01:02:45] [SPEAKER_13]: there's 115 4000

[01:02:47] [SPEAKER_13]: footers that are spread out across

[01:02:49] [SPEAKER_13]: Maine with the northern most one in

[01:02:52] [SPEAKER_13]: Katahdin Baxter Peak

[01:02:53] [SPEAKER_13]: and then you come into

[01:02:56] [SPEAKER_13]: New Hampshire and then across to Vermont

[01:02:58] [SPEAKER_13]: and then it's almost kind of

[01:03:00] [SPEAKER_13]: due west to get out to the Adirondacks

[01:03:02] [SPEAKER_13]: from Vermont

[01:03:03] [SPEAKER_13]: but there's a lot of like road walking

[01:03:05] [SPEAKER_13]: and spacing between that so that's why

[01:03:08] [SPEAKER_13]: this is so crazy because it's not just all trails

[01:03:11] [SPEAKER_03]: so I

[01:03:12] [SPEAKER_03]: decided to start on the Cat Skills

[01:03:14] [SPEAKER_03]: because in my mind a through

[01:03:16] [SPEAKER_03]: hike ending the Cat Skills

[01:03:18] [SPEAKER_03]: would have been very

[01:03:20] [SPEAKER_03]: anti-climactic whereas

[01:03:21] [SPEAKER_03]: on Baxter Peak or Katahdin

[01:03:24] [SPEAKER_03]: that's where the through hike ends that's where the Appalachian Trail

[01:03:27] [SPEAKER_03]: ends

[01:03:29] [SPEAKER_03]: and so that

[01:03:30] [SPEAKER_03]: was my main deciding factor

[01:03:32] [SPEAKER_03]: but I am glad that I did it the way

[01:03:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I did. I

[01:03:36] [SPEAKER_03]: started out with 100

[01:03:38] [SPEAKER_03]: miles of road walking right off the bat

[01:03:40] [SPEAKER_03]: during day two

[01:03:42] [SPEAKER_03]: but I'd rather start with that

[01:03:44] [SPEAKER_03]: than end with that for sure

[01:03:46] [SPEAKER_13]: any day. Yeah and this is

[01:03:48] [SPEAKER_13]: supported or self-supported or how did you

[01:03:50] [SPEAKER_03]: manage it? It was supported it wasn't

[01:03:52] [SPEAKER_03]: fully supported by any like

[01:03:54] [SPEAKER_03]: so it was fully supported air quotes

[01:03:56] [SPEAKER_03]: but I feel like there's different levels of

[01:03:58] [SPEAKER_03]: fully supported there are some people being

[01:04:00] [SPEAKER_03]: followed by a van

[01:04:01] [SPEAKER_03]: at every trailhead and there's others

[01:04:04] [SPEAKER_03]: who just have people help them resupply here

[01:04:06] [SPEAKER_03]: and there and I was very lucky to

[01:04:08] [SPEAKER_03]: have family and friends that were willing

[01:04:10] [SPEAKER_03]: to come on out and bring me

[01:04:12] [SPEAKER_03]: into town or bring me a resupply bag

[01:04:14] [SPEAKER_03]: and help me out there so

[01:04:16] [SPEAKER_03]: it was technically supported.

[01:04:18] [SPEAKER_13]: You're a preschool teacher? Yes.

[01:04:20] [SPEAKER_13]: I had a whole thing of questions

[01:04:22] [SPEAKER_13]: about like how do you deal with loneliness

[01:04:24] [SPEAKER_13]: and like how do you keep it but like you

[01:04:26] [SPEAKER_13]: probably like look forward to nothing

[01:04:28] [SPEAKER_13]: else but like just being on your own after

[01:04:30] [SPEAKER_13]: being with little kids for like

[01:04:32] [SPEAKER_03]: five days right? Yeah so I

[01:04:34] [SPEAKER_03]: love my job and I love working with the

[01:04:36] [SPEAKER_03]: kids but when it comes to my summers

[01:04:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I definitely like getting up there having

[01:04:40] [SPEAKER_03]: that break having my adventures

[01:04:41] [SPEAKER_03]: but honestly some summers after

[01:04:44] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm done with what I've ended up doing

[01:04:46] [SPEAKER_03]: I've been like okay I get to go back to work

[01:04:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I especially felt that when I was

[01:04:50] [SPEAKER_03]: doing the winter 115

[01:04:52] [SPEAKER_03]: I would take a week off of work

[01:04:55] [SPEAKER_03]: and I would just

[01:04:57] [SPEAKER_03]: push my limits

[01:04:58] [SPEAKER_03]: hiking all day in the cold

[01:05:01] [SPEAKER_03]: and then I was like

[01:05:02] [SPEAKER_03]: I get to go back to work. I don't need

[01:05:04] [SPEAKER_03]: to hike for another week.

[01:05:06] [SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, yeah, that's great

[01:05:08] [SPEAKER_13]: so but I'll throw those questions

[01:05:10] [SPEAKER_13]: out because I think I understand what you're coming from

[01:05:12] [SPEAKER_13]: now but so you're doing this

[01:05:14] [SPEAKER_13]: so you start off on the CAT Scales as one four

[01:05:16] [SPEAKER_13]: thousand four hundred in the CAT Scales and then you get to get up

[01:05:18] [SPEAKER_13]: to two of them yep and then you

[01:05:20] [SPEAKER_13]: got to get up to the Adirondacks so that's

[01:05:22] [SPEAKER_13]: a hundred mile road walk and then the Adirondacks

[01:05:24] [SPEAKER_13]: are those easy to string together?

[01:05:26] [SPEAKER_13]: I don't know anything about the Adirondacks I mean

[01:05:28] [SPEAKER_03]: other than what I've read. Yeah so it was a hundred mile

[01:05:30] [SPEAKER_03]: road walk to get to Northville

[01:05:32] [SPEAKER_03]: which then I took the Northville Placid Trail

[01:05:34] [SPEAKER_03]: which is another smaller through hike took that

[01:05:36] [SPEAKER_03]: to Adirondacks and

[01:05:38] [SPEAKER_03]: people do through hike

[01:05:40] [SPEAKER_03]: those similarly to the Diretisma

[01:05:42] [SPEAKER_03]: in New Hampshire

[01:05:43] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if it's as commonly done

[01:05:46] [SPEAKER_03]: but I was able to

[01:05:48] [SPEAKER_03]: get some information from other people's

[01:05:50] [SPEAKER_03]: ship reports. I had to alter

[01:05:51] [SPEAKER_03]: it some just from where

[01:05:53] [SPEAKER_03]: I was entering up from

[01:05:55] [SPEAKER_03]: and where I wanted to exit out of

[01:05:57] [SPEAKER_03]: it was important to me that I

[01:06:00] [SPEAKER_03]: took the

[01:06:04] [SPEAKER_03]: took the Crown Point Bridge

[01:06:06] [SPEAKER_03]: across into Vermont

[01:06:08] [SPEAKER_03]: instead of taking the ferry I didn't want

[01:06:10] [SPEAKER_03]: to break my footsteps by

[01:06:11] [SPEAKER_03]: standing on a ferry for

[01:06:13] [SPEAKER_03]: two miles or whatever across the lake.

[01:06:16] [SPEAKER_13]: And how close is

[01:06:18] [SPEAKER_13]: the western

[01:06:19] [SPEAKER_13]: edge of the Adirondacks

[01:06:22] [SPEAKER_13]: to Vermont? Is it like brush right up against

[01:06:24] [SPEAKER_03]: it? It wasn't that far really

[01:06:25] [SPEAKER_03]: I think that I

[01:06:28] [SPEAKER_03]: am not a hundred percent sure on this but

[01:06:29] [SPEAKER_03]: I believe I finished

[01:06:32] [SPEAKER_03]: the forty-six part

[01:06:33] [SPEAKER_03]: and then it was

[01:06:37] [SPEAKER_03]: under

[01:06:38] [SPEAKER_03]: maybe a day or two until

[01:06:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I crossed over into Vermont

[01:06:43] [SPEAKER_03]: it's about thirty miles or so.

[01:06:45] [SPEAKER_13]: And then

[01:06:47] [SPEAKER_13]: in Vermont did you go

[01:06:48] [SPEAKER_13]: to the southern

[01:06:50] [SPEAKER_13]: peaks first or did you go north?

[01:06:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, I hiked up

[01:06:54] [SPEAKER_03]: on the roads up to Mount Mansfield

[01:06:57] [SPEAKER_03]: and I took the long trail

[01:06:58] [SPEAKER_03]: south down to Killington

[01:07:00] [SPEAKER_03]: and then backtrack briefly

[01:07:01] [SPEAKER_03]: back to the Appalachian Trail and then took that up

[01:07:04] [SPEAKER_03]: to Moosilake.

[01:07:05] [SPEAKER_13]: And then from there you're basically

[01:07:07] [SPEAKER_13]: going to the Derritsima and then moving on

[01:07:09] [SPEAKER_13]: to Moosilake Notch and up to

[01:07:11] [SPEAKER_03]: backtrack. Yeah, so once I got into Maine it was the Appalachian Trail

[01:07:13] [SPEAKER_03]: the rest of the way with a few side trails

[01:07:15] [SPEAKER_03]: and that was the best part of the thru-hike

[01:07:17] [SPEAKER_03]: and it felt like summer camp compared to the rest of it

[01:07:19] [SPEAKER_03]: you would mention the

[01:07:21] [SPEAKER_03]: possible loneliness and all that

[01:07:22] [SPEAKER_03]: and that was a genuine struggle for that

[01:07:25] [SPEAKER_03]: effort. It was, I was very

[01:07:27] [SPEAKER_03]: lonely on most thru-hikes

[01:07:29] [SPEAKER_03]: from what I can tell

[01:07:31] [SPEAKER_03]: you build community

[01:07:33] [SPEAKER_03]: on trail but I would see

[01:07:36] [SPEAKER_03]: no other thru-hikers

[01:07:37] [SPEAKER_03]: it's something that no one else

[01:07:39] [SPEAKER_03]: really thru-hikes even on the Northfield

[01:07:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Placid Trail I didn't see another

[01:07:43] [SPEAKER_03]: thru-hiker on the long trail

[01:07:45] [SPEAKER_03]: you, I would have normally

[01:07:47] [SPEAKER_03]: seen people but it was during the

[01:07:49] [SPEAKER_03]: flooding in Vermont and

[01:07:51] [SPEAKER_03]: people were being suggested to get

[01:07:53] [SPEAKER_03]: off the trail because they weren't sure what the conditions

[01:07:55] [SPEAKER_03]: were like. They never technically closed

[01:07:57] [SPEAKER_03]: the trails but the trail

[01:07:59] [SPEAKER_03]: was very empty.

[01:08:01] [SPEAKER_13]: Wow, well that is impressive. I feel like

[01:08:03] [SPEAKER_13]: that's, so then the next project you do

[01:08:05] [SPEAKER_13]: is this most recent one where you actually

[01:08:08] [SPEAKER_13]: achieved the

[01:08:09] [SPEAKER_13]: fastest known time where you took

[01:08:11] [SPEAKER_13]: so you've done the winter version of it

[01:08:13] [SPEAKER_13]: you've then done the

[01:08:15] [SPEAKER_13]: thru-hike version of it which we would call this like

[01:08:17] [SPEAKER_13]: the giant derrotissima or the 115

[01:08:19] [SPEAKER_13]: and now you've decided

[01:08:22] [SPEAKER_13]: to do the fastest

[01:08:23] [SPEAKER_13]: known time to complete the 115

[01:08:25] [SPEAKER_13]: so this involves a

[01:08:27] [SPEAKER_13]: self-supported

[01:08:29] [SPEAKER_13]: approach where you're going to hike every

[01:08:31] [SPEAKER_13]: summit of the 115

[01:08:33] [SPEAKER_13]: but you can use a car

[01:08:35] [SPEAKER_13]: in between so logistically

[01:08:37] [SPEAKER_13]: you basically have to figure out the fastest way to do that

[01:08:39] [SPEAKER_13]: so can you talk a little bit about

[01:08:41] [SPEAKER_13]: your approach and the

[01:08:43] [SPEAKER_13]: logistics around how you plan this one?

[01:08:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so originally I was planning on taking

[01:08:48] [SPEAKER_03]: that summer entirely off from

[01:08:49] [SPEAKER_03]: big efforts. I wanted a break

[01:08:51] [SPEAKER_03]: from, like I did the thru-hike

[01:08:54] [SPEAKER_03]: and I just wanted

[01:08:55] [SPEAKER_03]: a break. I wanted time for me, family, friends

[01:08:57] [SPEAKER_03]: wanted to change priorities a little bit

[01:08:59] [SPEAKER_03]: but the more people I talked to they would ask me

[01:09:02] [SPEAKER_03]: what are you doing next?

[01:09:04] [SPEAKER_03]: and I would tell them nothing

[01:09:05] [SPEAKER_03]: and they were like we don't believe you

[01:09:07] [SPEAKER_03]: and they ended up being right

[01:09:10] [SPEAKER_03]: because I ended up doing

[01:09:12] [SPEAKER_03]: the speed effort

[01:09:13] [SPEAKER_03]: but I think one thing that drew me to the speed effort

[01:09:15] [SPEAKER_03]: was that it wasn't going to take my entire

[01:09:17] [SPEAKER_03]: summer. In theory it would take

[01:09:19] [SPEAKER_03]: 20 days and it

[01:09:21] [SPEAKER_03]: did, I'm very happy with that I was able to

[01:09:23] [SPEAKER_03]: get in just under that timing

[01:09:26] [SPEAKER_03]: but I had some priorities there

[01:09:28] [SPEAKER_03]: I wanted to have some events

[01:09:30] [SPEAKER_03]: before the speed effort

[01:09:32] [SPEAKER_03]: and afterwards. But once it came time

[01:09:34] [SPEAKER_03]: for me to be like okay I'm doing this

[01:09:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I had to sit down

[01:09:38] [SPEAKER_03]: figure out the

[01:09:40] [SPEAKER_03]: best groupings, the order to do them in

[01:09:43] [SPEAKER_03]: and

[01:09:44] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not the best with

[01:09:46] [SPEAKER_03]: logistics but I did my best to

[01:09:49] [SPEAKER_03]: figure out what mountains

[01:09:50] [SPEAKER_03]: can be connected together

[01:09:51] [SPEAKER_03]: and then figure out which mountains groups

[01:09:54] [SPEAKER_03]: are close enough that you can drive

[01:09:56] [SPEAKER_03]: to without too much time

[01:09:58] [SPEAKER_03]: waste and

[01:09:59] [SPEAKER_03]: I spent an evening with my good friend

[01:10:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Scott Beneroff who I know you guys have had

[01:10:04] [SPEAKER_13]: on before. Yeah Scott's a great guy.

[01:10:06] [SPEAKER_03]: He was able to help a lot with my

[01:10:08] [SPEAKER_03]: finalizing the logistics and just tweaking

[01:10:10] [SPEAKER_03]: things.

[01:10:11] [SPEAKER_03]: He was very helpful in that.

[01:10:14] [SPEAKER_13]: Yeah and I was looking at it so I'll post

[01:10:16] [SPEAKER_13]: this in the show notes and essentially like you have

[01:10:18] [SPEAKER_13]: some bigger days where you're doing like the extended

[01:10:20] [SPEAKER_13]: PEMI and stuff but for the most part

[01:10:22] [SPEAKER_13]: it was like 20-25 mile days

[01:10:25] [SPEAKER_13]: with like you know 7-8

[01:10:26] [SPEAKER_13]: thousand feet of gain and you'd go from

[01:10:28] [SPEAKER_13]: typical it seemed like you would grab

[01:10:30] [SPEAKER_13]: like a couple of peaks in the morning

[01:10:32] [SPEAKER_13]: and then a few peaks at night somewhere

[01:10:34] [SPEAKER_13]: else and then with the 4,000

[01:10:36] [SPEAKER_13]: footers like you didn't do them

[01:10:38] [SPEAKER_13]: in any sort of order like you do the

[01:10:40] [SPEAKER_13]: deritism and you kind of bouncing around a little bit

[01:10:42] [SPEAKER_13]: but it made sense how you were

[01:10:44] [SPEAKER_13]: plugging things in. So I thought

[01:10:46] [SPEAKER_13]: it was interesting you know. And did

[01:10:48] [SPEAKER_13]: when Scott was sort of mapping it out with you

[01:10:50] [SPEAKER_13]: did you just sort of say like

[01:10:53] [SPEAKER_13]: I'm going to trust you or did you

[01:10:54] [SPEAKER_13]: push back on anything?

[01:10:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I didn't push back too much. I did end up

[01:10:58] [SPEAKER_03]: making some changes. He's a

[01:11:01] [SPEAKER_03]: much stronger athlete than I am

[01:11:03] [SPEAKER_03]: and he had dreamed up

[01:11:04] [SPEAKER_03]: some pretty big days

[01:11:06] [SPEAKER_03]: and one of them that I ended up

[01:11:08] [SPEAKER_03]: not doing was we had talked

[01:11:10] [SPEAKER_03]: about making a loop

[01:11:13] [SPEAKER_03]: of the Northern Presidential's

[01:11:16] [SPEAKER_03]: and Wildcat

[01:11:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Carter's and we even

[01:11:18] [SPEAKER_03]: talked about adding in Mariah to that

[01:11:21] [SPEAKER_03]: and so that would have been

[01:11:22] [SPEAKER_03]: going up the Daniel Scott

[01:11:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Webster trail.

[01:11:26] [SPEAKER_12]: Don't do that.

[01:11:28] [SPEAKER_03]: And then going Northern Prezzy's

[01:11:31] [SPEAKER_03]: down to Wildcat

[01:11:32] [SPEAKER_03]: hiking up over that ridge and back

[01:11:34] [SPEAKER_03]: to my car but just the way

[01:11:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I was feeling at that point in the

[01:11:38] [SPEAKER_03]: effort I decided to

[01:11:40] [SPEAKER_03]: nix that and

[01:11:42] [SPEAKER_03]: change it up a little bit. So I definitely

[01:11:47] [SPEAKER_03]: took what he

[01:11:48] [SPEAKER_03]: suggested and

[01:11:50] [SPEAKER_03]: made it my own a little bit but

[01:11:52] [SPEAKER_03]: it was very collaborative during that evening of working

[01:11:54] [SPEAKER_13]: together. Yeah. Do you feel like

[01:11:56] [SPEAKER_13]: you left anything on the table? You feel like you could

[01:11:58] [SPEAKER_13]: beat the 19 days

[01:12:00] [SPEAKER_13]: if you did it again or are you

[01:12:02] [SPEAKER_13]: happier with how you did it? I don't think I

[01:12:04] [SPEAKER_03]: could beat it again. I do

[01:12:06] [SPEAKER_03]: think it's a soft time that

[01:12:08] [SPEAKER_03]: someone out there definitely could.

[01:12:10] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm very happy with my time. Logistically

[01:12:12] [SPEAKER_03]: it went exactly

[01:12:14] [SPEAKER_03]: how I wanted it to. There were times

[01:12:16] [SPEAKER_03]: that I thought I was going to fall behind

[01:12:19] [SPEAKER_03]: due to weather or

[01:12:22] [SPEAKER_03]: minor calf

[01:12:22] [SPEAKER_03]: pain.

[01:12:24] [SPEAKER_03]: I was like, what if I just push it to

[01:12:26] [SPEAKER_03]: 21 days and have a short day tomorrow?

[01:12:29] [SPEAKER_03]: But that

[01:12:30] [SPEAKER_03]: never happened to be the case but there are people

[01:12:32] [SPEAKER_03]: faster than I am for sure.

[01:12:34] [SPEAKER_03]: There are people that are willing to sleep less than I did.

[01:12:37] [SPEAKER_03]: But for me

[01:12:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I think that's the best that I could do.

[01:12:41] [SPEAKER_13]: Yeah. And I was looking at

[01:12:42] [SPEAKER_13]: the food here. I definitely

[01:12:44] [SPEAKER_13]: don't vibe on the food. I'd be going to the gas station

[01:12:47] [SPEAKER_13]: every morning to bagel sandwiches.

[01:12:50] [SPEAKER_13]: So let me

[01:12:50] [SPEAKER_13]: give a rundown. For breakfast

[01:12:52] [SPEAKER_13]: he had oats and

[01:12:55] [SPEAKER_13]: chia seeds.

[01:12:58] [SPEAKER_13]: He would soak

[01:12:58] [SPEAKER_13]: every night and add maple syrup in the morning.

[01:13:02] [SPEAKER_13]: And

[01:13:02] [SPEAKER_13]: craisins, walnuts, he would mix up

[01:13:05] [SPEAKER_13]: for breakfast.

[01:13:07] [SPEAKER_13]: He would cold soak

[01:13:09] [SPEAKER_13]: couscous and tuna for lunch.

[01:13:11] [SPEAKER_13]: And then it sounds like he didn't like

[01:13:12] [SPEAKER_13]: that much after a while.

[01:13:14] [SPEAKER_13]: And then he would mostly just

[01:13:17] [SPEAKER_13]: snack on like

[01:13:18] [SPEAKER_13]: Campbell's chunky soup and tortillas.

[01:13:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. I eat that most of the time.

[01:13:23] [SPEAKER_13]: What do you think Stomp?

[01:13:25] [SPEAKER_05]: I was going to say,

[01:13:26] [SPEAKER_05]: throw a little bark in there every now and then.

[01:13:31] [SPEAKER_13]: Well here we go though.

[01:13:32] [SPEAKER_13]: He redeems himself though because he got his snacks.

[01:13:34] [SPEAKER_13]: He's got the Welch's fruit snacks which

[01:13:36] [SPEAKER_13]: I see that a lot.

[01:13:38] [SPEAKER_13]: I used to love giving my kids fruit snacks.

[01:13:40] [SPEAKER_13]: Give me the dad

[01:13:42] [SPEAKER_13]: tax. Let's go.

[01:13:45] [SPEAKER_13]: And then you'd have the granola bars

[01:13:46] [SPEAKER_13]: which that's good. Beef jerky's, M&M's

[01:13:49] [SPEAKER_13]: and then tomato

[01:13:50] [SPEAKER_13]: basil wheat thins.

[01:13:52] [SPEAKER_13]: That's mine.

[01:13:53] [SPEAKER_13]: You like those? Yeah.

[01:13:56] [SPEAKER_13]: And then the applesauce which I've said

[01:13:57] [SPEAKER_13]: those aren't bad either. So okay.

[01:14:00] [SPEAKER_13]: He redeems himself a little bit Stomp.

[01:14:02] [SPEAKER_05]: What do you think? Yeah. Yeah. Not bad.

[01:14:04] [SPEAKER_05]: So you were carrying most of this.

[01:14:06] [SPEAKER_05]: How'd it work? I know you're heading this way right?

[01:14:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Like logistics and

[01:14:10] [SPEAKER_05]: caches.

[01:14:12] [SPEAKER_03]: This is where I had my speed effort

[01:14:14] [SPEAKER_03]: with the car. And so I was

[01:14:16] [SPEAKER_03]: before the trip I

[01:14:18] [SPEAKER_03]: bought a bulk amount of food of

[01:14:20] [SPEAKER_03]: what I thought I was going to need for the entire project

[01:14:22] [SPEAKER_03]: because I didn't want to be stopping at

[01:14:24] [SPEAKER_03]: grocery stores and resupplying.

[01:14:26] [SPEAKER_03]: So I had two big

[01:14:28] [SPEAKER_03]: totes in my car

[01:14:30] [SPEAKER_03]: that were full of food

[01:14:32] [SPEAKER_03]: and I would just dig into those and

[01:14:34] [SPEAKER_03]: eat as needed. I could eat as much as I

[01:14:36] [SPEAKER_03]: needed and I could resupply if I needed to.

[01:14:39] [SPEAKER_03]: I went to the grocery store a few times

[01:14:40] [SPEAKER_03]: just for like a brand

[01:14:42] [SPEAKER_03]: of maple syrup or brand out of Welch's

[01:14:44] [SPEAKER_03]: fruit snacks but never had to do a big shop.

[01:14:47] [SPEAKER_13]: Got it. Cool.

[01:14:48] [SPEAKER_13]: And then any issues with the car? Were you nervous about

[01:14:50] [SPEAKER_13]: somebody messing with the car and the trail heads

[01:14:52] [SPEAKER_13]: or any issues with you sleeping in the car at all?

[01:14:54] [SPEAKER_03]: So I had no issues with sleeping

[01:14:56] [SPEAKER_03]: in the car or being messed with at trail heads

[01:14:58] [SPEAKER_03]: but some of the roads up in Maine

[01:15:00] [SPEAKER_03]: they're a bit rough and

[01:15:02] [SPEAKER_03]: on one of them

[01:15:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I nearly ripped my exhaust off

[01:15:06] [SPEAKER_03]: so for the majority

[01:15:08] [SPEAKER_03]: of the speed effort

[01:15:09] [SPEAKER_03]: my car was real loud. You could hear me

[01:15:11] [SPEAKER_03]: coming from a ways away.

[01:15:14] [SPEAKER_03]: That was fun.

[01:15:16] [SPEAKER_13]: It is so crazy like

[01:15:17] [SPEAKER_13]: everything has to go perfectly.

[01:15:19] [SPEAKER_13]: You don't even factor that in but

[01:15:21] [SPEAKER_13]: you get a flat tire or something

[01:15:23] [SPEAKER_13]: how many days is that going to blow for you?

[01:15:26] [SPEAKER_03]: And then I always sleep well

[01:15:27] [SPEAKER_03]: in my car. So I have a small car

[01:15:29] [SPEAKER_03]: but I make it work. I have a Toyota Corolla

[01:15:31] [SPEAKER_03]: but I've taken the back seats out

[01:15:33] [SPEAKER_03]: and I have a twin bed back there

[01:15:35] [SPEAKER_03]: and I sleep like a baby every night.

[01:15:38] [SPEAKER_13]: Nice. Awesome.

[01:15:41] [SPEAKER_13]: What's your next crazy plan?

[01:15:44] [SPEAKER_03]: So I've kind of dreamed up this

[01:15:47] [SPEAKER_03]: big thing that I call

[01:15:49] [SPEAKER_03]: the 115 Grand Slam

[01:15:51] [SPEAKER_03]: and it consists of

[01:15:54] [SPEAKER_03]: a through hike of the 115

[01:15:55] [SPEAKER_03]: did that. A speed effort

[01:15:57] [SPEAKER_03]: of the 115 did that.

[01:15:59] [SPEAKER_03]: And then all four single seasons

[01:16:02] [SPEAKER_03]: and so I've done the

[01:16:03] [SPEAKER_03]: winter and then the summer. Next up

[01:16:05] [SPEAKER_03]: I am planning on attempting a fall

[01:16:07] [SPEAKER_03]: single season if I'm able to

[01:16:09] [SPEAKER_03]: get the time off from work

[01:16:12] [SPEAKER_03]: in the process of that

[01:16:13] [SPEAKER_03]: and it's looking pretty good. And then the

[01:16:15] [SPEAKER_03]: fourth part of the Grand Slam which is currently

[01:16:17] [SPEAKER_03]: impossible due to trail closures

[01:16:19] [SPEAKER_03]: in Baxter State Park for the month of November

[01:16:21] [SPEAKER_03]: every year but a grid of the

[01:16:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Northeast 115 does sound

[01:16:26] [SPEAKER_03]: interesting.

[01:16:27] [SPEAKER_03]: More of a lifelong goal there.

[01:16:29] [SPEAKER_13]: Yeah. Imagine if you got a job working

[01:16:30] [SPEAKER_13]: at Baxter State Park just to get that November

[01:16:35] [SPEAKER_13]: Well, so that's

[01:16:37] [SPEAKER_13]: impressive. So you love the

[01:16:39] [SPEAKER_13]: 115. Do you do anything? Do you travel

[01:16:40] [SPEAKER_13]: outside of the Northeast at all?

[01:16:42] [SPEAKER_03]: So I went out to Colo... let's see

[01:16:44] [SPEAKER_03]: a few summers ago I went on a road trip

[01:16:46] [SPEAKER_03]: with a friend and we went out west

[01:16:48] [SPEAKER_03]: we hit up Utah

[01:16:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Wyoming, Washington

[01:16:53] [SPEAKER_03]: and Colorado

[01:16:54] [SPEAKER_03]: and Colorado really

[01:16:56] [SPEAKER_03]: sparked joy for me. And so

[01:16:58] [SPEAKER_03]: I went out the following summer

[01:17:01] [SPEAKER_03]: and I ended up

[01:17:02] [SPEAKER_03]: hiking all of the 14ers because

[01:17:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm a very list based person. Once

[01:17:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I get a list in my mind I want to do them all

[01:17:09] [SPEAKER_03]: as fast as possible. So I did those

[01:17:10] [SPEAKER_03]: around 37 days I think it was.

[01:17:14] [SPEAKER_03]: But

[01:17:14] [SPEAKER_03]: primarily I stick to the Northeast. It's

[01:17:16] [SPEAKER_03]: where I grew up, born and raised

[01:17:19] [SPEAKER_03]: and I love the 115

[01:17:20] [SPEAKER_03]: it just feels like it is

[01:17:22] [SPEAKER_03]: to me the hiking list. It just

[01:17:25] [SPEAKER_03]: has everything in my opinion

[01:17:27] [SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, do you have a

[01:17:28] [SPEAKER_13]: favorite or some

[01:17:30] [SPEAKER_13]: favorite summits that you

[01:17:33] [SPEAKER_13]: place above others?

[01:17:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Winter Presidential Traverse is

[01:17:36] [SPEAKER_03]: hands down my favorite hike in the Northeast

[01:17:38] [SPEAKER_03]: it's on a good day. I

[01:17:40] [SPEAKER_03]: will seek out a Bluebird,

[01:17:42] [SPEAKER_03]: low wind, winter day to do a

[01:17:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Prezi and you can't beat it around here

[01:17:46] [SPEAKER_13]: in my opinion. Oh my god, there was a period

[01:17:49] [SPEAKER_13]: in the Prezis

[01:17:50] [SPEAKER_13]: winter I was up there and there was just

[01:17:52] [SPEAKER_13]: four or five days worth of amazing

[01:17:54] [SPEAKER_13]: undercast and if you can hit

[01:17:56] [SPEAKER_13]: it on one of those days it's just like there's nothing

[01:17:58] [SPEAKER_13]: else like it.

[01:18:01] [SPEAKER_13]: So, wow.

[01:18:02] [SPEAKER_13]: So Prezi Traverse, what about in the Adirondacks?

[01:18:05] [SPEAKER_03]: I honestly don't spend

[01:18:06] [SPEAKER_03]: as much time at the Adirondacks

[01:18:08] [SPEAKER_03]: on a regular basis when I'm doing my

[01:18:10] [SPEAKER_03]: efforts I have to.

[01:18:13] [SPEAKER_03]: It's closer but

[01:18:14] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't have as much community there

[01:18:17] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'll get some

[01:18:19] [SPEAKER_03]: feedback for this possibly but I just don't think

[01:18:21] [SPEAKER_03]: it's nearly as nice as the Whites.

[01:18:23] [SPEAKER_12]: No, that's the smart thing to say.

[01:18:26] [SPEAKER_12]: We focus on the Whites.

[01:18:29] [SPEAKER_03]: But I think kind of an underrated

[01:18:31] [SPEAKER_03]: mountain kind of is a giant

[01:18:33] [SPEAKER_03]: mountain in the Adirondacks.

[01:18:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I think it was my

[01:18:38] [SPEAKER_03]: first

[01:18:39] [SPEAKER_03]: 4,000 footer maybe in the Adirondacks

[01:18:41] [SPEAKER_03]: and it's just fabulous

[01:18:43] [SPEAKER_03]: views.

[01:18:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Most mountains have great views but some of that one

[01:18:47] [SPEAKER_03]: really sticks special to me.

[01:18:49] [SPEAKER_13]: What do you carry for

[01:18:51] [SPEAKER_13]: when you're doing your day hike stuff?

[01:18:53] [SPEAKER_13]: What do you carry for a backpack?

[01:18:54] [SPEAKER_03]: A day hike is usually an ultimate direction

[01:18:57] [SPEAKER_03]: vest. If it's

[01:18:59] [SPEAKER_03]: a longer day, hyperlight

[01:19:04] [SPEAKER_03]: and through hikers I was using

[01:19:05] [SPEAKER_03]: the hyperlight as well. I love those packs.

[01:19:07] [SPEAKER_03]: They're versatile. It can roll down to

[01:19:09] [SPEAKER_03]: a day pack or it can roll up to I've held

[01:19:11] [SPEAKER_03]: six days worth of food in one.

[01:19:13] [SPEAKER_13]: Yep, yeah I agree. That's the same

[01:19:15] [SPEAKER_13]: thing that I use. What about footwear?

[01:19:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Footwear I'm definitely

[01:19:19] [SPEAKER_03]: in the three seasons. I'm a speed goat

[01:19:21] [SPEAKER_03]: guy with Hoka.

[01:19:23] [SPEAKER_03]: But when it comes to the winter, I just

[01:19:25] [SPEAKER_03]: have, I don't even know the brand. It's some

[01:19:28] [SPEAKER_03]: cheap pair but

[01:19:29] [SPEAKER_03]: has good insulation and that's all I

[01:19:31] [SPEAKER_03]: care about really. I don't care

[01:19:33] [SPEAKER_03]: about the heavy feet. I want to keep

[01:19:35] [SPEAKER_03]: my feet warm in the winter.

[01:19:37] [SPEAKER_13]: What about hiking poles? You use them or no?

[01:19:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Definitely a hiking pole man.

[01:19:42] [SPEAKER_03]: I've been

[01:19:44] [SPEAKER_03]: considering trying to drop

[01:19:45] [SPEAKER_03]: them a little bit. I feel like

[01:19:47] [SPEAKER_03]: they're limiting when it comes to speed

[01:19:49] [SPEAKER_03]: when I go out with friends who

[01:19:51] [SPEAKER_03]: are not using poles

[01:19:54] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'm attempting

[01:19:55] [SPEAKER_03]: to trail run with them. It definitely

[01:19:57] [SPEAKER_03]: is a hindrance but so far

[01:19:59] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm a pole guy through and through

[01:20:01] [SPEAKER_03]: so we'll see if I ever give it up to try

[01:20:03] [SPEAKER_13]: to get faster. What do you do

[01:20:05] [SPEAKER_13]: for your water system? Do you

[01:20:08] [SPEAKER_13]: use a bladder

[01:20:09] [SPEAKER_13]: or do you just use like a smart

[01:20:11] [SPEAKER_13]: water bottle or what do you usually do?

[01:20:13] [SPEAKER_03]: On through hikes it's definitely a smart water bottles.

[01:20:16] [SPEAKER_03]: In the winter it is

[01:20:18] [SPEAKER_03]: something insulated in a

[01:20:20] [SPEAKER_03]: also in a wool sock

[01:20:21] [SPEAKER_03]: upside down in my pack and then

[01:20:23] [SPEAKER_13]: Stomp, he's speaking your language.

[01:20:26] [SPEAKER_13]: Stomp has like a wool sock

[01:20:27] [SPEAKER_13]: with duct tape.

[01:20:31] [SPEAKER_03]: And then on like in the summer day

[01:20:33] [SPEAKER_03]: it's just a camel back.

[01:20:36] [SPEAKER_13]: Alright well

[01:20:37] [SPEAKER_13]: I approve, I approve. It sounds like we got

[01:20:39] [SPEAKER_13]: similar rigs although I'm not doing anything crazy

[01:20:41] [SPEAKER_13]: anymore like you are.

[01:20:43] [SPEAKER_13]: But that's impressive so you'll be out there

[01:20:45] [SPEAKER_13]: in the fall

[01:20:47] [SPEAKER_13]: doing your projects for the 115

[01:20:49] [SPEAKER_13]: and then Stomp what did I miss?

[01:20:51] [SPEAKER_13]: Did I miss anything you want to cover with Will?

[01:20:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Let's find out what

[01:20:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Will thinks about how to make

[01:20:57] [SPEAKER_05]: the light and fast ethos a little

[01:20:59] [SPEAKER_05]: safer for people out there. What would you

[01:21:01] [SPEAKER_05]: suggest people pack in their

[01:21:04] [SPEAKER_05]: packs when they're out there solo

[01:21:05] [SPEAKER_05]: in the sub zero and everything

[01:21:07] [SPEAKER_05]: else?

[01:21:10] [SPEAKER_03]: I will do

[01:21:11] [SPEAKER_03]: my best here but I unfortunately

[01:21:13] [SPEAKER_03]: am probably not the best

[01:21:15] [SPEAKER_03]: to be giving advice on this because I'm not always the best

[01:21:17] [SPEAKER_03]: out of myself. But for myself I'll

[01:21:19] [SPEAKER_03]: watch the weather and

[01:21:21] [SPEAKER_03]: if it's supposed to be real cold I'm going to

[01:21:23] [SPEAKER_03]: double up on my base layers to start out

[01:21:27] [SPEAKER_03]: and

[01:21:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll always carry my garment in

[01:21:29] [SPEAKER_03]: reach for my mom.

[01:21:33] [SPEAKER_03]: And there will always be an emergency

[01:21:35] [SPEAKER_03]: blanket in my pack. They're so light

[01:21:38] [SPEAKER_03]: and I haven't had to use it but

[01:21:39] [SPEAKER_03]: I've heard that it can be a lifesaver

[01:21:43] [SPEAKER_03]: and there's usually almost always

[01:21:46] [SPEAKER_03]: a puffy jacket in my pack that will

[01:21:48] [SPEAKER_03]: stay there all winter long

[01:21:49] [SPEAKER_03]: never needing to come out but having

[01:21:51] [SPEAKER_03]: there when necessary.

[01:21:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Nice, how about a

[01:21:55] [SPEAKER_03]: stay moving

[01:21:57] [SPEAKER_05]: A bivy? You pack a bivy

[01:21:59] [SPEAKER_05]: like a little saw

[01:22:01] [SPEAKER_03]: handheld, it's like tiny.

[01:22:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't currently

[01:22:05] [SPEAKER_03]: but there was a time when I transitioned

[01:22:07] [SPEAKER_03]: from carrying the sleeping bag and all

[01:22:09] [SPEAKER_03]: that to carrying a bivy. Like I said, unfortunately

[01:22:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I've started carrying less and less

[01:22:13] [SPEAKER_03]: which is definitely unfortunate

[01:22:14] [SPEAKER_03]: with the podcast that I'm on right now.

[01:22:19] [SPEAKER_05]: That's all good. No, I think it's an important

[01:22:21] [SPEAKER_05]: topic because it can happen

[01:22:23] [SPEAKER_05]: quick and all of a sudden you're like, uh oh

[01:22:25] [SPEAKER_05]: but

[01:22:26] [SPEAKER_05]: just go back to your aches and pains. So

[01:22:29] [SPEAKER_05]: you had some calf issues? Was

[01:22:31] [SPEAKER_05]: that your? Just a little bit. Yeah, okay.

[01:22:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Nothing like I had on my

[01:22:35] [SPEAKER_03]: thru-hike. On my thru-hike I had

[01:22:36] [SPEAKER_03]: horrible quad pains that was just almost

[01:22:39] [SPEAKER_03]: debilitating. Had to take at one point

[01:22:41] [SPEAKER_03]: a day off, another time another like half

[01:22:43] [SPEAKER_03]: a day off.

[01:22:45] [SPEAKER_03]: But I just iced a little bit

[01:22:47] [SPEAKER_03]: near the beginning and I had a

[01:22:49] [SPEAKER_03]: massage gun that I was using

[01:22:51] [SPEAKER_03]: but I didn't train very

[01:22:53] [SPEAKER_03]: well for the speed effort.

[01:22:54] [SPEAKER_03]: I was prioritizing

[01:22:57] [SPEAKER_03]: friends and family

[01:22:59] [SPEAKER_03]: over training for better

[01:23:01] [SPEAKER_03]: or for worse.

[01:23:04] [SPEAKER_03]: So I was probably

[01:23:05] [SPEAKER_03]: under trained so that probably didn't help.

[01:23:07] [SPEAKER_05]: Interesting, what were you getting

[01:23:08] [SPEAKER_05]: for back pain? Or quad pain?

[01:23:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Because often times I'll get that but it's

[01:23:13] [SPEAKER_05]: more related to my back and I think

[01:23:14] [SPEAKER_05]: it's like pain but it's my lower back

[01:23:17] [SPEAKER_05]: that's throwing off my

[01:23:19] [SPEAKER_05]: quads and what not.

[01:23:21] [SPEAKER_03]: For my quad pain

[01:23:22] [SPEAKER_03]: it was, I believe

[01:23:24] [SPEAKER_03]: it was just an overuse thing with my VMOs.

[01:23:27] [SPEAKER_03]: It started out on one side and then

[01:23:30] [SPEAKER_03]: ended up on the other

[01:23:31] [SPEAKER_03]: after I overcompensated.

[01:23:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Were you getting cramps?

[01:23:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Whenever I was going up or downhill

[01:23:38] [SPEAKER_03]: just shooting

[01:23:39] [SPEAKER_03]: pains. Wow, interesting.

[01:23:42] [SPEAKER_13]: Wait till you get a little bit older.

[01:23:45] [SPEAKER_13]: That'll be like

[01:23:46] [SPEAKER_13]: in every hike occurrence.

[01:23:50] [SPEAKER_13]: Well, I'm

[01:23:51] [SPEAKER_13]: impressed. I don't know if I'll

[01:23:53] [SPEAKER_13]: ever get to the 115s because I don't

[01:23:55] [SPEAKER_13]: know if I'll ever get to the Adirondacks but I do need

[01:23:57] [SPEAKER_13]: to look you up when I go to Vermont.

[01:23:59] [SPEAKER_13]: I may need some advice because those are

[01:24:01] [SPEAKER_13]: on my list to get to eventually.

[01:24:04] [SPEAKER_13]: There's only five of them.

[01:24:05] [SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, I know. I just keep finding

[01:24:07] [SPEAKER_13]: new things to do. I'm a list guy too

[01:24:09] [SPEAKER_13]: but I do the 52 with the views, the terrifying

[01:24:11] [SPEAKER_13]: 25s. Trying to get my daughter to finish her

[01:24:13] [SPEAKER_13]: 4,000 footers so there's always something

[01:24:15] [SPEAKER_12]: coming. Wow.

[01:24:17] [SPEAKER_13]: I'm impressed.

[01:24:20] [SPEAKER_13]: Do the kids

[01:24:21] [SPEAKER_13]: ever ask you like, hey how come you have all those

[01:24:23] [SPEAKER_13]: patches all over your legs, Mr.

[01:24:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Robinson? What's going on?

[01:24:27] [SPEAKER_03]: No, but they do enjoy

[01:24:29] [SPEAKER_03]: when I

[01:24:31] [SPEAKER_03]: take time off of work, I will occasionally

[01:24:34] [SPEAKER_03]: FaceTime into the classroom

[01:24:35] [SPEAKER_03]: so they can see me on the top of the mountains

[01:24:38] [SPEAKER_03]: and they will

[01:24:39] [SPEAKER_03]: talk about that. They're like, I remember that time

[01:24:41] [SPEAKER_03]: you were on the mountain and you were on the phone.

[01:24:44] [SPEAKER_03]: They'll bring it up randomly

[01:24:45] [SPEAKER_13]: sometimes. Yeah, no, that's fun.

[01:24:48] [SPEAKER_13]: It's such a good role model

[01:24:49] [SPEAKER_13]: for the kids to see people getting outside

[01:24:51] [SPEAKER_13]: enjoying nature.

[01:24:53] [SPEAKER_13]: We need more of that.

[01:24:56] [SPEAKER_13]: Very impressed, Will. I'll include

[01:24:58] [SPEAKER_13]: in the show notes the link to the Fastest

[01:24:59] [SPEAKER_13]: Known Time page and your Instagram so people

[01:25:01] [SPEAKER_13]: can check out. You've got great photography on

[01:25:03] [SPEAKER_13]: your Instagram too so people can follow along

[01:25:06] [SPEAKER_13]: with your adventures.

[01:25:07] [SPEAKER_13]: We appreciate you coming in. Thank you very much.

[01:25:09] [SPEAKER_13]: Thanks, Will. Awesome.

[01:25:11] [SPEAKER_13]: You want to stick around and listen to Stomp try to give us a history

[01:25:13] [SPEAKER_13]: lesson about the conchamongous

[01:25:16] [SPEAKER_03]: highway? I'll stick around for a bit.

[01:25:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Alright, very good.

[01:25:19] [SPEAKER_13]: Alright, Stomp. So this is your moment.

[01:25:21] [SPEAKER_13]: You get to do a history segment. History light.

[01:25:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes, the

[01:25:25] [SPEAKER_05]: cank. History light. Yeah, I was

[01:25:27] [SPEAKER_05]: doing a little research on the

[01:25:29] [SPEAKER_05]: cangamongous and that's not how you say it.

[01:25:31] [SPEAKER_05]: So we all know the cangamongous is that

[01:25:33] [SPEAKER_05]: lovely stretch of

[01:25:35] [SPEAKER_05]: 34.5 miles

[01:25:36] [SPEAKER_05]: from Lincoln to

[01:25:39] [SPEAKER_05]: the eastern side of Albany or Conway

[01:25:41] [SPEAKER_05]: and we may take it

[01:25:43] [SPEAKER_05]: for granted driving over it but it has

[01:25:45] [SPEAKER_05]: a hell of a history. So I fell down

[01:25:47] [SPEAKER_05]: a rabbit hole looking it up.

[01:25:49] [SPEAKER_05]: First of all, the pronunciation

[01:25:53] [SPEAKER_05]: is

[01:25:55] [SPEAKER_05]: cank-ca-mogous

[01:25:57] [SPEAKER_05]: so the

[01:25:57] [SPEAKER_05]: the mog is mog, M-O-G.

[01:26:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Cancamongous. Just say

[01:26:01] [SPEAKER_05]: the cank. Yeah, that's what we all know it

[01:26:03] [SPEAKER_05]: now. So before the

[01:26:05] [SPEAKER_05]: cank existed, you know,

[01:26:07] [SPEAKER_05]: as you know people would have to go north

[01:26:10] [SPEAKER_05]: through all

[01:26:11] [SPEAKER_05]: the different notches, two notches.

[01:26:13] [SPEAKER_05]: You'd have to go up over

[01:26:15] [SPEAKER_05]: Crawford and through the notch

[01:26:17] [SPEAKER_05]: over here.

[01:26:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Not

[01:26:21] [SPEAKER_05]: the case anymore, thank God.

[01:26:23] [SPEAKER_05]: It's not within the scope of this

[01:26:25] [SPEAKER_05]: little history thing to cover

[01:26:27] [SPEAKER_05]: the name itself but it does

[01:26:29] [SPEAKER_05]: refer back to the last

[01:26:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Sagamore chief.

[01:26:33] [SPEAKER_05]: Sagamore meaning chief of the

[01:26:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Penacook tribes.

[01:26:37] [SPEAKER_05]: The Penacook tribes dominated

[01:26:39] [SPEAKER_05]: a confederation of tribes in New

[01:26:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Hampshire during the 17th

[01:26:43] [SPEAKER_05]: century.

[01:26:45] [SPEAKER_05]: Have we ever talked about that,

[01:26:47] [SPEAKER_05]: Mike? We may have at one

[01:26:49] [SPEAKER_13]: point. I think we've done a couple

[01:26:51] [SPEAKER_05]: of topics before. Yeah, but that wasn't

[01:26:53] [SPEAKER_05]: a pretty picture back then.

[01:26:55] [SPEAKER_05]: We'll save that for another story.

[01:26:57] [SPEAKER_05]: As I mentioned, it does span from Lincoln

[01:26:59] [SPEAKER_05]: to Albany which is

[01:27:01] [SPEAKER_05]: the town west of Conway

[01:27:03] [SPEAKER_05]: essentially. The last several

[01:27:05] [SPEAKER_05]: miles are in Albany.

[01:27:09] [SPEAKER_05]: The western side of the Cancamongous

[01:27:11] [SPEAKER_05]: isn't really talked about too much but that essentially

[01:27:13] [SPEAKER_05]: runs from North Woodstock over

[01:27:15] [SPEAKER_05]: to the Haverhill side on the

[01:27:17] [SPEAKER_05]: border of Vermont and that passes

[01:27:19] [SPEAKER_05]: up over Lost River. It goes through

[01:27:21] [SPEAKER_05]: Benton, has a couple of really nice views.

[01:27:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Beaverbrook Pond up at the top of

[01:27:25] [SPEAKER_05]: the high point. But we're talking

[01:27:27] [SPEAKER_05]: about the other stretch

[01:27:30] [SPEAKER_05]: from Lincoln over to Albany.

[01:27:32] [SPEAKER_05]: So it basically took

[01:27:33] [SPEAKER_05]: 25 years to build the road

[01:27:36] [SPEAKER_05]: and some of the early historical

[01:27:37] [SPEAKER_05]: accounts are quoted as saying

[01:27:39] [SPEAKER_05]: it was just a nice path through

[01:27:41] [SPEAKER_05]: fur shaded glens and over

[01:27:43] [SPEAKER_05]: boulder choked rivers.

[01:27:46] [SPEAKER_05]: So 25 years

[01:27:47] [SPEAKER_05]: for 34.5 miles. That was basically

[01:27:49] [SPEAKER_05]: 1.3 miles per

[01:27:51] [SPEAKER_05]: year. Which, I mean

[01:27:53] [SPEAKER_05]: that's pretty amazing when you think about

[01:27:55] [SPEAKER_05]: it. A supervisor at the

[01:27:57] [SPEAKER_05]: time from Washington DC reported back

[01:27:59] [SPEAKER_05]: once, the quality of work, excellent.

[01:28:02] [SPEAKER_05]: Morale of workers, high.

[01:28:04] [SPEAKER_05]: Progress of construction,

[01:28:06] [SPEAKER_05]: negligible.

[01:28:08] [SPEAKER_05]: It's so cool.

[01:28:11] [SPEAKER_05]: So it starts

[01:28:12] [SPEAKER_05]: in the 30s. So there was no official

[01:28:13] [SPEAKER_05]: road connecting Lincoln to Albany.

[01:28:15] [SPEAKER_05]: There were only two dead end forest roads

[01:28:17] [SPEAKER_05]: and they were basically used for forest management,

[01:28:19] [SPEAKER_05]: fire management and logging.

[01:28:22] [SPEAKER_05]: The White Mountain National Forest

[01:28:24] [SPEAKER_05]: had been established by this time

[01:28:26] [SPEAKER_05]: as you've covered before, Mike,

[01:28:28] [SPEAKER_05]: extensively. And they

[01:28:29] [SPEAKER_05]: had funds

[01:28:31] [SPEAKER_05]: to start building a connecting highway.

[01:28:33] [SPEAKER_05]: So it was at the height of the depression

[01:28:35] [SPEAKER_05]: but despite that, I guess there were funds.

[01:28:38] [SPEAKER_05]: Who knew?

[01:28:40] [SPEAKER_05]: So there were a lot of workers

[01:28:41] [SPEAKER_05]: that were available to help on the job

[01:28:43] [SPEAKER_05]: and they came from the Civilian Conservation

[01:28:46] [SPEAKER_05]: Corps or the CCC

[01:28:48] [SPEAKER_05]: as it was labeled back in the day.

[01:28:51] [SPEAKER_05]: So in

[01:28:52] [SPEAKER_05]: 1942, construction

[01:28:54] [SPEAKER_05]: out of the western Lincoln side was

[01:28:55] [SPEAKER_05]: mostly completed but the eastern approach was

[01:28:57] [SPEAKER_05]: halted because of World War II.

[01:29:00] [SPEAKER_05]: By 1955,

[01:29:01] [SPEAKER_05]: this is fascinating.

[01:29:03] [SPEAKER_05]: So you have construction

[01:29:05] [SPEAKER_05]: starting and then by 1955,

[01:29:07] [SPEAKER_05]: 13 years later, they basically

[01:29:09] [SPEAKER_05]: went to the high point of the

[01:29:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Canke which is just a few miles

[01:29:13] [SPEAKER_05]: past the hairpin turn.

[01:29:17] [SPEAKER_05]: By 1956,

[01:29:18] [SPEAKER_05]: there was only a one mile gap

[01:29:21] [SPEAKER_05]: between the two competing efforts

[01:29:23] [SPEAKER_05]: from Albany and Lincoln.

[01:29:25] [SPEAKER_05]: And when the two finally

[01:29:27] [SPEAKER_05]: connected, it really

[01:29:29] [SPEAKER_05]: went off without any attention whatsoever.

[01:29:31] [SPEAKER_05]: No hype, no news, nothing.

[01:29:33] [SPEAKER_05]: It was just like, oh yeah, we get a new road.

[01:29:35] [SPEAKER_05]: It connects both sides.

[01:29:37] [SPEAKER_05]: And by 1957,

[01:29:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Federal Forest Highway Number 8

[01:29:44] [SPEAKER_05]: as it's called

[01:29:45] [SPEAKER_05]: was turned over to the state of New Hampshire

[01:29:47] [SPEAKER_05]: and it became property of the state.

[01:29:50] [SPEAKER_05]: And the entire

[01:29:51] [SPEAKER_05]: road was at the time

[01:29:53] [SPEAKER_05]: and still is within the White Mountain National Forest.

[01:29:58] [SPEAKER_05]: The New Hampshire Highway Commissioner

[01:29:59] [SPEAKER_05]: John Morton wrote to Congress

[01:30:01] [SPEAKER_05]: urging them to approve funds

[01:30:03] [SPEAKER_05]: to complete the highway.

[01:30:04] [SPEAKER_05]: Because remember, at this point it's still just a dirt road.

[01:30:08] [SPEAKER_05]: So this man

[01:30:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Morton was able

[01:30:11] [SPEAKER_05]: to actually get the funding

[01:30:13] [SPEAKER_05]: required to pave it.

[01:30:15] [SPEAKER_05]: And they used different

[01:30:17] [SPEAKER_05]: concerns whether it be fire protection,

[01:30:19] [SPEAKER_05]: recreation and

[01:30:21] [SPEAKER_05]: also just local

[01:30:23] [SPEAKER_05]: timber and paper companies too

[01:30:24] [SPEAKER_05]: for access.

[01:30:26] [SPEAKER_05]: So let's see.

[01:30:29] [SPEAKER_05]: That was 1964.

[01:30:31] [SPEAKER_05]: That was the first paving, the official paving of the road.

[01:30:34] [SPEAKER_05]: And there was a second

[01:30:35] [SPEAKER_05]: a little later on in 1968.

[01:30:39] [SPEAKER_05]: In 1959

[01:30:40] [SPEAKER_05]: that was when it officially opened to the public.

[01:30:42] [SPEAKER_05]: So you could actually access

[01:30:44] [SPEAKER_05]: it in the late 50s.

[01:30:46] [SPEAKER_05]: Then

[01:30:47] [SPEAKER_05]: the 60s came rolling in, 1967.

[01:30:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Loon Mountain opened.

[01:30:52] [SPEAKER_05]: And then that brought in all the

[01:30:55] [SPEAKER_05]: things that you see there now.

[01:30:58] [SPEAKER_05]: So that's your brief little

[01:31:00] [SPEAKER_05]: history light from Stomp

[01:31:01] [SPEAKER_05]: on the history of the Kanga Mangas.

[01:31:03] [SPEAKER_05]: Very fascinating.

[01:31:05] [SPEAKER_05]: It's something we tend to not

[01:31:07] [SPEAKER_05]: think about, I don't think. But it's such a

[01:31:10] [SPEAKER_05]: key tool for us at gaining

[01:31:11] [SPEAKER_05]: access to so many areas

[01:31:13] [SPEAKER_05]: within the whites. Whether it be the Hancock's

[01:31:16] [SPEAKER_05]: or Paso Conaway,

[01:31:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Whiteface, the backside,

[01:31:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Chacora, you name it.

[01:31:22] [SPEAKER_05]: Pretty neat.

[01:31:23] [SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, and there's a couple

[01:31:25] [SPEAKER_13]: of things Stomp will fill in here. So

[01:31:27] [SPEAKER_13]: Kanga Mangas, he was the nephew

[01:31:30] [SPEAKER_13]: of Chief

[01:31:31] [SPEAKER_13]: Juana Lancet and the grandson of

[01:31:33] [SPEAKER_13]: Chief Paso Conway.

[01:31:35] [SPEAKER_13]: There's all those connections when you think about

[01:31:37] [SPEAKER_13]: sort of the names of the different

[01:31:39] [SPEAKER_13]: summits and areas within the White Mountains.

[01:31:43] [SPEAKER_13]: And then the other thing I'll call out is

[01:31:45] [SPEAKER_13]: I was reading that old

[01:31:47] [SPEAKER_13]: guidebook in 1876. There's almost no

[01:31:49] [SPEAKER_13]: mention of Lincoln as a

[01:31:51] [SPEAKER_13]: center for hiking back then.

[01:31:53] [SPEAKER_13]: So a lot of talk about like

[01:31:55] [SPEAKER_13]: Gorham and North Conway,

[01:31:57] [SPEAKER_13]: Jefferson,

[01:31:59] [SPEAKER_13]: Crawford Notch, but very little

[01:32:01] [SPEAKER_13]: about Lincoln. And

[01:32:03] [SPEAKER_13]: I think that like the

[01:32:06] [SPEAKER_13]: connection with the Kang coming

[01:32:07] [SPEAKER_13]: over probably

[01:32:09] [SPEAKER_13]: accelerated a lot of the growth in Lincoln.

[01:32:11] [SPEAKER_13]: I know Lincoln was always a hub for logging

[01:32:13] [SPEAKER_13]: and things like that. But I think that

[01:32:15] [SPEAKER_13]: it definitely helped establish

[01:32:17] [SPEAKER_13]: Lincoln as sort of the

[01:32:19] [SPEAKER_13]: main town on the western side.

[01:32:22] [SPEAKER_05]: With its connection

[01:32:23] [SPEAKER_05]: to the Pemi,

[01:32:25] [SPEAKER_05]: huge connection.

[01:32:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, absolutely.

[01:32:29] [SPEAKER_05]: How did I do Mike? Good?

[01:32:31] [SPEAKER_13]: You did very well. I'm proud of you.

[01:32:33] [SPEAKER_13]: You get your entry

[01:32:35] [SPEAKER_13]: level history professor badge.

[01:32:37] [SPEAKER_05]: I had to let your gums rest for a little while

[01:32:39] [SPEAKER_05]: so I figured I'd chip in.

[01:32:41] [SPEAKER_13]: Why don't you do these

[01:32:43] [SPEAKER_13]: next two because my mouth is

[01:32:45] [SPEAKER_13]: pretty much done at this point.

[01:32:47] [SPEAKER_13]: I spoke too soon.

[01:33:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Alright, so we are on to

[01:33:29] [SPEAKER_05]: the search and rescue section. We have

[01:33:32] [SPEAKER_05]: been fairly

[01:33:33] [SPEAKER_05]: keyword. I'm not going to say it

[01:33:35] [SPEAKER_05]: but it's true.

[01:33:37] [SPEAKER_05]: A little bit Q.

[01:33:39] [SPEAKER_05]: But again, the high season is approaching

[01:33:41] [SPEAKER_05]: with the leaves starting to fall.

[01:33:44] [SPEAKER_05]: And our first mission

[01:33:45] [SPEAKER_05]: here takes us to

[01:33:47] [SPEAKER_05]: Black Mountain.

[01:33:50] [SPEAKER_05]: One of my trails that I'm on

[01:33:51] [SPEAKER_05]: quite a bit, the Chippewa Trail.

[01:33:53] [SPEAKER_05]: So this is September 9th.

[01:33:55] [SPEAKER_05]: At approximately 726 PM

[01:33:57] [SPEAKER_05]: there was a call to New Hampshire fishing game.

[01:33:59] [SPEAKER_05]: There was a hiker who was having a medical

[01:34:01] [SPEAKER_05]: emergency on the Chippewa Trail

[01:34:04] [SPEAKER_05]: in Haverhill.

[01:34:05] [SPEAKER_05]: The hiker who was identified as Daniel

[01:34:07] [SPEAKER_05]: Bautschilder, 66 of

[01:34:09] [SPEAKER_05]: the Hillman to New Hampshire,

[01:34:11] [SPEAKER_05]: began having trouble and

[01:34:14] [SPEAKER_05]: pulled the trigger

[01:34:15] [SPEAKER_05]: to get help. Conservation

[01:34:17] [SPEAKER_05]: officers responded to the Chippewa

[01:34:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Trail along with volunteers from Pemi Search and Rescue

[01:34:21] [SPEAKER_05]: and members of the Haverhill Fire

[01:34:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Department. Rescues reached

[01:34:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Bautschilder at approximately

[01:34:27] [SPEAKER_05]: 830 PM and he was assisted down

[01:34:29] [SPEAKER_05]: to the trailhead where the

[01:34:31] [SPEAKER_05]: party arrived at 1034 PM.

[01:34:33] [SPEAKER_05]: And then he was transported to

[01:34:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for

[01:34:37] [SPEAKER_05]: further treatment.

[01:34:39] [SPEAKER_05]: We do not have an update on that.

[01:34:40] [SPEAKER_05]: Hopefully he's doing well.

[01:34:44] [SPEAKER_05]: Then we have a second

[01:34:45] [SPEAKER_05]: mission here

[01:34:47] [SPEAKER_05]: that just came in hot off the presses.

[01:34:51] [SPEAKER_05]: September 11th.

[01:34:52] [SPEAKER_05]: We are taken to

[01:34:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Sargent's Purchase

[01:34:55] [SPEAKER_05]: and this is the Mount Monroe

[01:34:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Loop Trail. At approximately

[01:34:59] [SPEAKER_05]: 8 AM on September 11th

[01:35:02] [SPEAKER_05]: a hiker was found

[01:35:03] [SPEAKER_05]: unconscious on the Mount Monroe Loop Trail

[01:35:05] [SPEAKER_05]: approximately 0.2 miles north of the summit

[01:35:07] [SPEAKER_05]: of Mount Monroe.

[01:35:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Personnel from AMC Lake of the Clouds Hut

[01:35:11] [SPEAKER_05]: as well as Good Samaritan hikers

[01:35:13] [SPEAKER_05]: to include a medical doctor and a group of

[01:35:15] [SPEAKER_05]: Baltimore City Fire Department personnel

[01:35:17] [SPEAKER_05]: who were all medically trained

[01:35:19] [SPEAKER_05]: came to the aid of this hiker.

[01:35:21] [SPEAKER_05]: An emergency call was made to state police

[01:35:23] [SPEAKER_05]: dispatch who forwarded it to Fish and Game

[01:35:25] [SPEAKER_05]: and due to the remote

[01:35:27] [SPEAKER_05]: location and seriousness of

[01:35:29] [SPEAKER_05]: the condition, Fish and Game contacted

[01:35:31] [SPEAKER_05]: the Army National Guard for possible

[01:35:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Black Hawk helicopter

[01:35:36] [SPEAKER_05]: response.

[01:35:37] [SPEAKER_05]: While awaiting the

[01:35:39] [SPEAKER_05]: response from the Black Hawk crew,

[01:35:41] [SPEAKER_05]: the group of hikers placed the strict command in a litter

[01:35:43] [SPEAKER_05]: and carried him approximately 0.1

[01:35:45] [SPEAKER_05]: to the Lake of the Clouds Hut

[01:35:47] [SPEAKER_05]: which is just below

[01:35:48] [SPEAKER_05]: Mount Monroe.

[01:35:50] [SPEAKER_05]: And of course the loop is the bypass so you don't have

[01:35:53] [SPEAKER_05]: to go to the summit. You can go around it if you

[01:35:55] [SPEAKER_05]: so choose.

[01:35:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Let's see the hiker. We don't have to identify

[01:35:59] [SPEAKER_05]: him on this one but they were solo hiking

[01:36:01] [SPEAKER_05]: spent the previous night at the hut

[01:36:03] [SPEAKER_05]: and had departed in the morning with the

[01:36:05] [SPEAKER_05]: intention of staying at Mitzvahut

[01:36:07] [SPEAKER_05]: which is a little further south

[01:36:10] [SPEAKER_05]: past Mount Pierce.

[01:36:12] [SPEAKER_05]: At this point it's unclear if

[01:36:13] [SPEAKER_05]: the person had fallen or suffered a head

[01:36:15] [SPEAKER_05]: injury or suffered some other

[01:36:17] [SPEAKER_05]: unknown medical emergency.

[01:36:19] [SPEAKER_05]: The person had regained consciousness prior

[01:36:21] [SPEAKER_05]: to the arrival of the helicopter

[01:36:23] [SPEAKER_05]: but was still showing signs and symptoms

[01:36:25] [SPEAKER_05]: of a potentially serious problem.

[01:36:28] [SPEAKER_05]: So at 9.50am

[01:36:29] [SPEAKER_05]: the Black Hawk arrived and was able to

[01:36:31] [SPEAKER_05]: land near the hut.

[01:36:34] [SPEAKER_05]: And then they departed with

[01:36:35] [SPEAKER_05]: the hiker at 10.02

[01:36:38] [SPEAKER_05]: en route to Dartmouth Hitchcock

[01:36:39] [SPEAKER_05]: Medical Center. Pretty interesting

[01:36:41] [SPEAKER_05]: two medicals in

[01:36:43] [SPEAKER_05]: one week. And that's interesting

[01:36:45] [SPEAKER_05]: they mentioned that the fire personnel were up there

[01:36:47] [SPEAKER_05]: because this is the...was it the flags on the

[01:36:49] [SPEAKER_05]: 48 day or no? When is that?

[01:36:51] [SPEAKER_13]: That was Saturday right? No, no I don't think that's happening.

[01:36:54] [SPEAKER_13]: Yeah. Got it. That's happening

[01:36:55] [SPEAKER_05]: this Saturday. Okay that's right. Okay.

[01:36:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Cool. Alright so interesting that those

[01:36:59] [SPEAKER_05]: were up there but again I wish them

[01:37:02] [SPEAKER_05]: the best and hopeful

[01:37:04] [SPEAKER_05]: recovery.

[01:37:05] [SPEAKER_05]: And that's all we have for search and rescue.

[01:37:08] [SPEAKER_13]: That's it. So we're happy that it's

[01:37:10] [SPEAKER_13]: quiet time and

[01:37:12] [SPEAKER_13]: thanks again Will for

[01:37:13] [SPEAKER_13]: joining us and then

[01:37:15] [SPEAKER_13]: yeah I'll be out in the Great Gulf this weekend

[01:37:17] [SPEAKER_13]: and are you going anywhere Stomp?

[01:37:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh I'm gonna go

[01:37:22] [SPEAKER_05]: somewhere probably Sunday

[01:37:23] [SPEAKER_05]: with Mr. Stomp but Saturday

[01:37:25] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm booked up and Friday night I'm booked up.

[01:37:27] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm gonna be going up to Greenleaf Hut with

[01:37:29] [SPEAKER_05]: doing some training.

[01:37:31] [SPEAKER_05]: So that'll be a little bit of a hike.

[01:37:34] [SPEAKER_13]: Enjoy. Yeah. Alright

[01:37:35] [SPEAKER_13]: well we will catch our

[01:37:37] [SPEAKER_13]: listeners next week

[01:38:53] [SPEAKER_07]: The snow was piled up to three feet

[01:38:55] [SPEAKER_07]: some spots and there was a wind chill

[01:38:57] [SPEAKER_07]: of minus one degree.

[01:39:00] [SPEAKER_00]: And there's three words to describe

[01:39:01] [SPEAKER_00]: this race. Do we all know what they are?

[01:39:09] [SPEAKER_09]: thanks for being with us today. Thanks for having

[01:39:11] [SPEAKER_09]: me. What are some of the most

[01:39:13] [SPEAKER_09]: common mistakes you see people make when

[01:39:15] [SPEAKER_09]: they're heading out on the trails to hike here in New Hampshire?

[01:39:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Seems to me the most common is being unprepared

[01:39:19] [SPEAKER_00]: I think if they just simply visited

[01:39:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Hikesafe dot com and got a list

[01:39:23] [SPEAKER_00]: of the ten essential items and had those in

[01:39:25] [SPEAKER_00]: their packs they probably would have no need

[01:39:27] [SPEAKER_00]: to ever call us at all.

Listener on Daily Walks

I am not a hiker but I do like to listen about the stories of those that do. I turn this on when I take my daily walks. It is starting to get me interested in getting in some hiking this summer.
